Got to visit my favorite pupusa truck at the LA After Dark Night Market. And the pupusas were crispier than ever. I had two revueltas. The refried black beans are a little on the salty side (which I like, but fair warning for sensitive palates) and are the perfect consistency. This was the first time I had the plantains and honestly the $19 combo plate was pretty filling for me, so I had to share them! My plate also came with three different dips/salsas: a sweet one for the plantains, a light cheesy sauce, and a mild salsa. Big Grandma's really knows how to slang a mean pupusa. The masa was moist, and there was no skimping on the lard - resulting in the most flavorful pupusa I've ever had. Grandma's is incontrovertibly the best pupusa in LA, that's for damn sure. I ordered the cheese pupusa (with the most hearty cheese-to-masa ratio - yum!), which contains zucchini and nopales. This was absolutely insane. It also came with the salsa roja (also very flavorful), plantain, and curtido (a pickled slaw). They currently have a link to their gofundme up on their instagram (@biggrandmaskitchen), because sadly the owner's cooking equipment and tools burnt down during the Eaton Fire. Despite having had tragedy strike them recently, this local small business is still selflessly giving back to the communities of Altadena and Pasadena by regularly donating food to residents and first responders at community food drives, so I strongly urge everybody to consider donating, or at least buy a pupusa or two - you will NOT regret it! So there we were, late on a weekday night blazing a trail east on the 134 and we simultaneously voiced the same thought: "I'm hungry. Where can we get something to eat?" Most restaurants are shuttered after 10 PM on weeknights. There's fast food, but even those places, with the exception of Del Taco, close pretty early. That's why you always see a super-long drive-through line at the Del Taco near Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena. People want their crunchtadas and shrimp tacos, yo. But I digress. I googled "taco trucks near me" and I was directed to one on Fair Oaks. Driving like a bat out of hell down Fair Oaks, I see out of the corner of my eye the bright yellow food truck of Big Grandma's Kitchen and, emblazoned in neon purple, "Pupuseria on Wheels." I forgot the taco truck and stopped hard, brake smoke billowing around me. I turned into the parking lot and looked at my watch. It was 10:50 PM -- 10 minutes before the food truck closed. My husband was dubious. "What's a pupusa?" he asked. "Watch and learn, grasshopper," I said. We ordered four pupusas (Salvadoran fried, stuffed, thick corn tortillas): Revueltas, chicken, spinach and jalapeno, and garlic. We waited less than 10 minutes. The pupusas we got were delicious -- slightly crispy on the outside and warm and filled with a mild mozzarella and other ingredients, like chicken, on the inside. The garlic pupusa was especially piquant and good. The only thing is that I wish the curtido (a relish made of cabbage), was more flavorful. It was crunchy (thumbs up) but bland. I was pretty hungry, but one pupusa was filling and my husband ate two and was sated. Note that when you order pupusas, you have to order at least two. Next time, I'll try some of the plantain dishes as well as the pupusas; I'm getting hungry just thinking about them. Food was so-so but what really killed it was the customer service. I asked for 2 extra forks and the guy questions if I already have one. Hi , i happen to go to a mini market , across the street , from where you were parked ( in Pasadena ) , so decided to try it. I will say , i have had better pupusas , at few Salvadorean restaurants in the area. Yours were ok , BUT hardly no cheese at all inside the pupusas , at least put more cheese , please !!! And i ordered only " cheese " ( garlic ones too ) but there was mostly garlic. And i guess i am use , to them being fried or grilled ( with some type of oil ) or even butter. They were very dry. But i loved the fried plantanos , those were yummie. And the jimica juice he gave me , to try. That was refreshing. Though the food was good. Cons wins over Pros. Tried them last night at SCV Food Truck Thursday. Since they have the longest line on the event... thinking it must be really good. I was wrong ... seems that they're not prepared for this event. Placing an order took about 30 minutes ... waiting for the order another 25 minutes. That's only for 2 highend priced meal. Event start at 5pm around 7pm they run out of 7 types of Pupusa, only 3 to choose from. Also, seems they don't like to give condiments... gave only 1 fork for 2 meals. I had to ask for it and seems hesitant to give it. No tissue to provide and no foil to cover left overs. It's made to order so you have to wait a long long long time. So this is two reviews in one and it's going to be about consistency. 1st time I went it was great had the yuccaritto which is excellent idea by the way. The chicharrón was crispy yucca was on point...the burrito was wrapped properly. Came with lime and was wrapped in foil like a burrito should be Today not so good chicharrón was soft and chewy yucca pieces were inconsistent some to chewy and soft some to crunchy burrito wasn't wrapped properly didn't come wrapped in foil no lime They were pretty busy but for me still not an excuse for the lack of effort put into my food. So something happened around the Spring of 2022 (fist visit) and end of September 2022 (latest visit). For being Salvadorean food, this place is EXPENSIVE, but I didn't mind that much first time around since it was great. The best pupusas I had outside of El Salvador, the chicharrón was on point and the plantains were perfect. Fast-forward end of September. The pupusas were just ok, and they are making them smaller. No review on the plantains since I didn't have any this time. I also got a yuca with chicharrón. It legit had only 3 pieces of chicharrón on a bed of mostly yuca. I complained about that and they did give me more chicharrón. Not a good idea considering the chicharrón had this foul taste to it. It was weird. Never tasted anything like it in pork. It felt... Wrong. Hopefully It won't make me sick. Hopefully they just had an off day because if they get consistently this bad, I would definitely not recommend this food truck. read more

Our favorite items were the garlic pupusas and the pastelitos. The ensalada drink was great too - not too sweet, made with fresh fruit ... super refreshing. Food was made to order and came out within about ten minutes, so it was fresh AF when we got it. This is with people in line ahead of us and behind us, so the prep time was very reasonable. Shout out to the amazing people running this place too by the way. You can tell Chef Lima is truly passionate about his product. His love for the food comes through in the quality of his product. I wanted some comfort food and immediately thought of Big Grandma's Kitchen Pupusaria. It had been a while since my last visit and I've been tormented by their drool-inducing social media posts. Every time I've visited, I was never disappointed. Tonight was no different. Tonight I ordered a combo of pupusas, a BGK cheeseburger (which has a pupusa in it!! ), plantain empanadas filled with beans served with a side of crema. I topped off my order with a refreshing ensalada drink. Tonight was a to-go order and my drive home smelled heavenly of sweet plantains. It was the first thing I took a bite of when I got settled home... SO BOMB! Just like every visit, Chef Lima's pupusas were fresh and made with love. Came by Altadena for the first time, figured I'd stop for some food since I was in the neighborhood and have had a long drive. This food truck was the first place I saw passing by, so I stopped, and was delighted by the friendly staff. I got a little bit of everything, I've been wanting to try pupusas for a very long time, so I guess I don't have much to compare to, but they were everything I could ever wish them to be; hot, well flavored, and very comforting, just as I imagine grandma would make them, with love. This is an updated review! Congratulations to Big Grandma's Kitchen and family for getting their food truck!!! Like what I said in my previous review, I have been their stalker since they first started their pop ups! Still going strong (as their stalker)! Hahaha! Anyway, they are now at their new location: 2283 N Fair Oaks Ave, Altadena 91001 right in front of the church. There is parking inside the lot of the church. The food truck is parked right next to their lot. They are open from Wednesday-Sunday and be sure to check their Instagram for any updates. You can call them to place an order before arriving or you can order with the cashier at the truck. They now have combos when you order and/or you can order sides. Since becoming vegan, I am always on the lookout for vegan friendly restaurants/food trucks/pop ups. This food truck is definitely vegan friendly! For their pupusas, you can order spinach, squash, jalapeño, garlic, and loroco with no cheese. The employees were all wearing masks and there is a sign asking for customers to wear their masks at all times when around the truck. I ordered the squash pupusa with no cheese. One of the owners told me that the pupusa is made out of corn flour and no dairy/animal products are added to it. The curtido and salsa are vegan friendly as well! Instead of the Yuca con Chicharron plate, I got the spinach instead of Chicharron. They had Ensalada and the Horchata drinks today. The Ensalada is mainly made up of fresh fruits (apples, mango, pineapple), however, the Horchata has milk in it. One of the owners verified to me that there is a designated pan for everything they cook including the French Fries, yuca, and Chicharron. All the fillings are also separated in their own container. As for my Yuca con Spinach plate, I love their yuca! Always at the right crisp level! Their yuca tastes even better with their curtido, salsa, and the spinach. This plate is bursting with flavor! They were very generous with the spinach and I even put some on my pupusa. Squash pupusa tasted great with the spinach, curtido and salsa as well. The Ensalada and Horchata drinks were perfect per usual. They had the right sweetness. Chef Lima gave me an order of their Garlic French Fries because he wanted me to try another vegan friendly dish. French Fries were made perfectly and loved garlic with it! My friend enjoyed eating her Salvi Fries and her Yuca con Chicharron plate. She also loved the yuca because it was so perfectly made. I stumbled across Big Grandma's Kitchen via social media then began following their feed (pun intended). Could the food taste as good as it looks in pictures? The answer is yes. The location was easy to find. It's located in the Mobile station parking lot under canopies. There is also a seating area consisting of two large tables and folding chairs. I walked up to a friendly worker at the register. She quickly announced that the food stemmed from El Salvador; I don't blame her. Please don't be that person trying to order tacos. I'm a long time fan of Salvadoran cuisine, and pupusas are among my favorites. I decided to order a loroco with cheese pupusa ($4), a small ensalada ($4 - the small was the size of a large), and an order of panes con pollo ($10). Every single item was delicious. How delicious? My order was to-go, I ate the pupusa while driving then had the immediate thought to turn right back around to order more. Regretfully, I didn't. However, I am consoled with the fact that I now know of a place where I can count on to deliver tasty Salvadoran food. The pupusas are not greasy and the panes was full of flavor. You can get the gravy on the side, but trust me, you'll want to smother it anyway. The gravy alone is worth a visit, but definitely call them beforehand to make sure panes is on the menu for the day. So I just was at a food truck event in Valencia I got 6 pupusas One order of garlic fries and a drink it was $80 And to top it off I asked for a bag to carry all my boxes in and he wanted to charge me another 50 cents for a plastic bag where did they come up with these prices you know damn well they don't charge this in other neighborhoods but I was in Valencia and they're trying to price gouges over here total rip off and waited for 30 minutes to get my food. First time at the What the Truck event in SCV and though the line was quite long (took about 40 minutes to order and maybe another 30 for the food) it was definitely worth it. The revuelta pupusas were delicious and the staff was super helpful, friendly and working their butts off. If you have the time to wait, I 100% recommended. Omg we literally went back three times! Found this gem at a food truck festival at Soboba casino over the weekend. Made our rounds trying to decide what to eat and I love pupusas. I rarely get good ones out here! So it was definite I would get some. They have a lot of combinations you could come up with. Selected a few options from their large variety. Tried chicken, carne asada, chorizo, I ordered a revueltas and asked to add garlic and jalapeños! OMG!!! I instantly regretted I only got one of these lol. So we had to go back!!! Went to West Covina Farmer's market with my son's insistence on me trying pupsas for the first time. Drove the15 miles from Pasadena and the Pupusa did not disappoint. They were not greasy. Considering it was 90 degrees outside I was glad we went. The food were very flavorful and on point. Very generous serving.. The staff are very engaging and took the time to explain the food. I had the Yuca with chicharron, and my son had the Spinach Pupusa and the Revuelta (pork, bean & cheese), Pupusa. After finding out I had never had Pupusas, Big Grandma's kindly included an extra beef Pupusa. The Pupusa came with a salsa and picked radish which complimented it very well. Hats off to the chef. I am honestly blown away that anyone would ever give a 5 star review unless they have never had a good Salvadoran meal or pupusa. By far the most expensive and worst pupusas I have ever had in my life (and I have had many in my time). The pupusa was pure masa.
