Time and time…read moreagain I have been disappointed with mediocre tacos and while these might not be the best tacos in the world, the guy running it does deserve some recognition. To start off, tacos a vapor, as the name states it are steamed tacos where the meat is cooked in a steamer versus any frying or grilling. There is still a lot of technique that goes into this, but the outcome is a delicious surprise of texture and flavor. Having said that, it is not every day where you find a place like this that does it right. El Mocho has proved to me on several occasions now, that he knows how to cook and present the steamed taco in a way that is enjoyable and tasty. He always offers his guests a simple but tasty appetizer that consists of some tortilla chips, beans, and a drop of his tasty salsa. Who does that anymore? I mean not even restaurants offer you a complimentary appetizer anymore. It's not much but the mere fact that this guy on a taco truck does, speaks volumes to his character and drive to succeed in such a competing market. The main reason I was there was for the cabeza (head) tacos. It is so hard to find decent cabeza anywhere these days, most people don't really know how to cook it let alone make it good. Tacos El Mocho does a great job at it, and it comes out tasting delicious, reminds me of home. The other good options are Lengua, Labio and surprisingly the Asada is also tasty. The truck is a cash only business and tacos run for 3 bucks a pop. A little steep in my opinion but the flavor makes up for the cost. Keep in mind, the tacos a vapor come out hot! So, unless you want a 1st-2nd degree burn in your mouth, give it a few seconds before shoving them in your mouth, I made that mistake once already :( The truck is hard to miss, he is parked on a side street parallel to Oxnard Blvd. right in front of Smart and Final and Burger King. If you like the more "exotic" meat options in your tacos, give Tacos El Mocho a try, you will not regret it.
