I don't eat a lot of beef, so when I do, I'm often leery of stuff that costs less than a pack of gum (thanks to Michael Pollan). Still, I gave El Rey a shot and had their $1.25 taco. And then I had another. Tiny little soft corn tortillas bedecked with seasoned beef, chopped white onion and cilantro are served hot. You add as much sauce, jalapenos, and fresh radishes as you can pile on. Delish. The vegetarian tacos were also good, if a little unimaginative. Rice, beans, onions, cilantro, avocado queso and crema made a filling meal (like the world's smallest burrito). Service was quick and pleasant and I didn't get the feeling the owners of the truck were trying to cheap-out on the ingredients. Everything tasted fresh. Go EL REY. You can still get good food cheap. Just came here to say that this is hands down the best Mexican food I've had North of Los Angeles. Their burritos, tacos, tostadas, everything is amazing! The folks who work there are really nice too and very well organized. I've seen it really busy but somehow they still manage to crank out Michelin star quality Mexican food in 5-10 minutes. I've always been a loyal fan to the Oakland Taco Trucks. I everyoneee that there is no better place for a taco truck than in Oakland. I work in Berkeley and I was reallyyy craving for carne tacos, but with only having 30 minutes, there was no way I could have made it to Oakland and back. I yelped "tacos" and found this place. I told my friends that I was going to try it out and everyone was like "are you sureee.... a good taco truck in Berkeley?" I'm glad I took the chance though because I LOVE the taco's here! It is just as good as Oakland, maybe even a little better since I don't really like the sauce the Oakland one has anymore and the Oakland truck never give me radishes. The meat is tender, I love all the onion and cilantro they put on it, and the tortilla isn't soggy and oily like most places. They have not figured out rice and beans, which led me to their Quesadillas, which are THE BEST! The Carnitas Quesadilla and the Carne Asada Quesadilla are all I have needed to try, but they have many options. The meats are perfectly spiced, juicy and tender, the salsa and toppings are well-balanced, really, really well done. I could eat here for lunch everyday... oh, well, I practically do right now! Delish! I was worried about my lunch choices in this area--lots of $10 sandwiches to choose from, but that's rough on the wallet on a weekly basis. I don't have to feel guilty about eating out if I go to El Rey's taco truck, nor unsatisfied, like I'm sacrificing my taste buds for my wallet! $5 lunch: 3 tacos (al pastor, carnitas, and lengua) and a Jarritos soda. All the meats were moist and flavorful--the al pastor: well seasoned but not soupy; the carnitas--crunchy and salty but not dry; and the lengua: moist and tender but not bland. I liked this food truck. It has a good location, the food was decent. The item I selected was unavailable. The wait was reasonable for the "made-to-order." and there were several people (five) there before me, and I went off hours, so I would assume it is popular. They gave me a lot of food, so if you are eating with two people, even better! There is parking near by. I am not sure if I'd go out of my way to eat here again, but it is A-OK for a try. read more

Wow, shocked at how high the scores are. I had an utterly mediocre veggie burrito when I stopped by today (my first visit). I expected much lower scores. The nice-sized burrito was dominated by a slush of refried beans, and few other flavors could surface. It tasted like a tube of beany mush. I appreciated their including the radish slices, a lime slice, and a pepper, though. Service was decent too. Maybe their meat dishes are better? Given the ridiculously glowing reviews, I'll give them another shot if I'm ever hungry around there again. read more

Right outside the Berkeley Ironworks gym....I've been passing by this hidden treasure for months, thinking, too unhealthy, I could go to the grocery store and do better, yadda yadda..... but last night, I was food deprived, suffered from a bit of the Elvis-itis (you know, shaky legs), crappy climbing all night long.... I was feeling so depleted, and not looking forward to scrounging in my fridge for a lonesome meal.... so I asked the guys at the gym for their recommendation for the taco truck outside.... "Definitely the carne asada" - OK, so I order a steak and pork taco - everything on it. And a few minutes later... oh my goodness... oh my goodness... The most amazing, flavorful, tasty, delicious, yummy, incredible.... not enough words to describe these uber cheap carne asada or pork tacos. How could I have passed by such an experience all this time? Indeed, if I wasn't so cold (it was 9pm) and shaky, I'd have ordered another two (I recommend eating there... even if it is freezing cold outside, while the food is nice and hot).... *Sigh*.... If you follow my reviews (why would you,you weirdo), you'd know that I am on a quest to find the best bean/rice/cheese burrito in the bay area (compared to my favorites in SoCal). This place comes close! I've asked the guy on the truck, and he assures me that the beans are not made with lard and the rice is not cooked in chicken stock, so vegetarians can get down with this. The burrito itself is hefty (the way it should be!) with great proportions of beans/rice/cheese. Too often, places stuff this kind of burrito with all rice which is fucking stupid. El Rey does not - everything is balanced, and those nutritious, fiber 'n protein filled beans are all up in your mouth. The salsa is also very tasty, albeit not very spicy. It's an interesting mix of salsa verde & a tomato-based one. Tasty on a burrito. Service speed - eh. Horchata is good - nothing remarkable. Price for burrito + Horchata = $6. Sweet. read more

This place is the best, hands down the best. There's nothing to dislike, their al pastor is amazing, the asada? Amazing. Hell, I don't even eat seafood and their fish tacos are incredible. Ive worked near by and it's my go to spot whenever I'm undecided. The burritos are great, I mean how often do you get a burrito where the tortilla is crispy? Every spot toast their tortilla, but this truck does it to perfection. The meat doesn't feel dry and generic, the burrito isn't soggy half way through consumption and its not filled with filler items. It's not the most amount of food for the money, its just the right amount which is what makes this place so good because they don't try to give you a lot to compensate for mediocrity. It's clear the cook putsi in a lot of effort. I've gone to a fair share of taqueria in Berkeley and this truck is flat out better. Its the best in the Bay and its easily the best. read more

Oh my god. I just got back from this place and was blown away. I can safely say that this was the best burrito that I have ever had in my life, and I have had a lot of burritos. I am vegetarian, so the only thing that I could order on the menu was the veggie burrito. I was bummed that I would not be able to try any of their famous tacos until I took a bite of the burrito. It was crazy good. What made it even better was the radish, jalapeos, and limes that they served on the side.
