Gosh, the women running this truck were so industrious that I was rooting for their food to be great. On our way to Berkeley Aquatic Park, Jamie W. and I were strolling on Fourth Street and couldn't help but notice the bright blue food truck between Lululemon and the long-shuttered Spenger's. Now the concept of Asian-influenced hot dogs was not new to us. We had tried Japadog up in Vancouver a while ago, and there's the odd Seoul Hotdog coincidentally in Berkeley. Dojo Dog apparently changes their menu daily and have included non-dog options like fish n' chips, judo ramen, and hot wasabi pastrami. However, we were focused on the expansive hot dog selection and settled on the kinda pricey $9 Sumo Dog (photo: https://bit.ly/3zQ0hgu). It was what looked to be a foot-long frankfurter ladled with their special Japanese curry beef chili and grilled cabbage and topped with chopped scallions. It was quite a mouthful and a bit of a mess dealing with the spillage but not quite the culinary sensation we were hoping it would be. Oh well, the hot wasabi pastrami sounded like a tasty reason to look for their truck. FOOD - 4 stars...a chili dog with a Tokyo twist AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...it's a truck in front of a few outdoor benches and open tables SERVICE - 4 stars...hard-working in that tiny truck TOTAL - 4 stars...sometimes you just need a weenie RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? I stopped at the Great Notion brewery on the way back from the way back from the cal Berkeley football game. The brewery was modern and clean. I decided to try the food truck outside. I got the chili cheese fries. I'm not a chili cheese fries person but these were absolutely delicious. Even my wife that is a picky eater loved them. They said it was Japanese curry chili. I failed to mention that there was curry in it and she loved them. The lady that was running the food truck was very nice and courteous. I would definitely go back again.

Absolutely delicious! I got the sumo dog and tranquilitea. The sumo dog was tasty and flavorful, and the tranquilitea (mango green tea) was delicious and fresh! I really enjoyed both, and the service was great. Rebecca was super nice and friendly, and the Martin was too! The cart is very cute and I'm so glad I caught them while shopping!

My fav hot dog back in college (and I love hot dogs), so I was so happy to find it on Bay Street Emeryville! But quality has gone down since 5 years ago, and the price has gone up: $8 hot dog :\. The bun and ingredients aren't toasted or prepared as well as before. The original hot dog menu explaining each item is also missing from the truck, so it seems like the owners don't really care anymore. Check it out if you'd like to try a hot dog with an Asian kick though, like pork sung as a topping. My go-to was always the ninjitsu dog, which has Japanese mayo, seaweed and cabbage, and Tranquilitea. They also now have American items like fries and other things that you wouldn't think a truck named "Dojo Dog" would sell.

Thanks to Sierra Nevada Torpedo Room, I was introduced to Dojo Dog! After starting my flight from Torpedo Room, I wanted some munchies to go with my drinks. Luckily for me, Dojo Dog was right outside the brewery. My party and I placed our orders and the nice staff members from Dojo Dog delivered it to us inside. We kept it simple and ordered the Dojo Fries and the Chili Cheese Fries. The Dojo Fries were great. Although it's just "regular" fries, the seasoning on it was tasty. It reminded me of the seasoning packet that comes with the Nongshim Shin Ramyun (lol). The Chili Cheese Fries were also delicious! I actually HATE chili with a passion, but these fries were pretty good. Too bad I wasn't hungry enough to try out their Dojo Dogs. It definitely reminds me of Japadog, which I am a huge fan of. I'll have to find some time in the future to visit Dojo Dog and try out other items from their menu.

Wushu Dog - pork sung, flash-grilled cabbage, katsu sauce & kewpie mayo
    Andrew C.

Dojo Dog is the cutest little food trailer at Bancroft & Telegraph (across from Subway). They have 4 Asian / Martial Arts themed hotdogs with different sauces and grilled cabbage in each one, Ninjitsu (crisp nori & teriyaki sauce), Wushu (pork sung & katsu sauce), Kendo (bonito & wasabi mayo), and Shaolin Monk (lettuce & miso glaze. nori wrap / no bun). All are $4.60 + tax. Got the Wushu (Pork Sung (? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rousong), Flash-Grilled Cabbage, Katsu Sauce, Japanese Mayo http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/ya60yzziKMfgyFLAdUNdFQ?select=WKRwAslFl49_dJbGtn_fWQ). The cabbage is under the dog and the other topping and sauces are on top. I liked this arrangement because you could get a bite of the natural casing dog with each bite. The pork sung, katsu sauce, and mayo combo is a bit sweet which was balanced by the grilled cabbage. I liked this effort better than the Asian fusion dogs at Doggy-Style in Alameda (http://www.yelp.com/biz/doggy-style-hot-dogs-alameda#hrid:BWpnZp0LUlbz0oNJyQlx8w) I don't know if they were going for the crackly banh mi effect with the toasted hoagie roll, but it didn't quite work with it over-toasted and hard in spots.

Ambiance: It's a food truck, but a very CUTE food truck. I LOVE their design! :) Service: Mehhh...meh....mehhh......mehhh. ._. Food: - Tranquil tea: This is a the second time I'm having their tranquil tea and it is not as I remembered it a year ago. It is SOOOO watered down. No flavor at all..except for like a hint of mango. WHAT UP DOJO DOG? X_X Price: ~$2 Tip: - avoiding this place from now on Conclusion: Not coming back.

I've been here twice so far and I'm probably going to come here for lunch in between my breaks during class often. The prices are fair. You can get a combo (dojo dog + tranquilitea) for $5. The tea is so refreshing and it tastes like mango! I've tried 2 dogs so fair, the wushu and the ninjitsu. Both were good but I think I'll probably go back to the wushu the next time I go. Good eat, close to campus, cheap!

    Good luck dog!
    Kristina L.

After class, I was pretty hungry. And it was right there on telegraph and Bancroft in front of the Bookstore. Service: They were extremely friendly. I couldn't ask for better service. The guy even gave us a free drink cause apparently they were still in training and they were thanking us for baring with their sluggliness. Food: Ninjutsu - It was pretty good. It had seaweed and japanese mayo. I didn't think it was too special, but it was unique. The bread was a little too hard/crispy for my taste. Wushu - I thought this was a better choice. It had pork sung and japanese mayo. It was tastier than the other. Again, the bread was a little too hard/crispy to my liking. Grass Jelly Drink - I liked this alot. Not too different than the grass jelly you get at the stores though. Price: It was a little pricey. Hot dog - $4.30 + tax Grass Jelly Drink - $2.30 + tax Overall: I would recommend this place to try. Not sure if I could recommend it as a regular eatery.

Wonderful truck! Extremely friendly service. Incredible story behind the business. Got a groupon so I got to try all the hot dogs. I paid $10 for $20 Worth of Asian-Inspired Hot Dogs from Groupon. My personal favorite was the shaolin monk. This dog comes with no bun, and in its places is a seaweed wrap. Utterly delicious!!! My little boy boy devoured the toasted bun and veggie dog. As someone that used to own and operate my own hot dog truck, I can appreciate this student run small business. Two thumbs up!

I ordered a couple of their popular dishes, the KAOKAO Char Siu Set and the Chong Qing Noodles, and both were fantastic. The char siu was so tasty, nicely cooked with most of the fat rendered (a big plus since unrendered fat especially on BBQ is a pet peeve of mine). It had that satisfying chew, a subtle smoky char, and a sweet-savory black bean glaze that tied everything together. The rice and pickled cucumbers on the side were a great balance to the in your face flavors of the pork. The Chong Qing Noodles were another highlight. You can tell the noodles are handmade as they are springy, chewy, and full of texture. The staff actually recommended that I get them uncooked since I was ordering to go, so I could boil them at home for a few minutes to keep the perfect bite and they were totally right. The broth was rich and balanced, with nutty sesame paste, a gentle kick from chili oil, a bit of crunch from peanuts, and some fresh bok choy for contrast. Everything was packed thoughtfully for takeout and still tasted amazing even after a longer drive. Overall, a really pleasant experience with great food, great service, and a place I'll definitely return to next time I find myself around Berkeley!

Fortunately I was able to dodge her as I was reviewing the giant backlit menu. I didn't think anything about the emptiness of the space until my order was ready. I decided to try the $13.99 Samgyeopal Ssam-jang, which featured grilled pork belly mixed with veggie soybean paste topped with fried onion, roasted seaweed, and sesame oil, all over rice (Photo 7). The bowl was a strange contrast of textures. Flavor wise, there were more misses than hits. The pork belly was overcooked with the chewy meat rendered almost inedible. The rice was weirdly mushy like it was sitting in lukewarm water far too long. The rest of the ingredients were nondescript. Definitely a hard pass on this bowl in the future. The only reason I'm not leaving one star for this business is that I felt bad for the one soft-spoken server who had the temerity to deal with the unrelenting rantings of the homeless woman.
