I tried the Dojo Dog food truck at the recent Berkeley Bay Festival. My friend and I were looking for a quick snack since we had dinner plans later, and Dojo Dog seemed like the best bet. Unfortunately, it was anything but quick, and the food was very meh. There weren't many folks in line when we joined, so we thought it'd be quick. But even for the 2-3 groups in front of us, it took quite a while to take their orders, so we ended up standing in line for what felt like forever. Some of the folks behind us left the line because it was taking so long. While their focus is on Asian inspired hot dogs, they also offer an eclectic mix of appetizers such as fries and potstickers along with other entrees like fish n chips and a hot pastrami sandwich. Gosh, the women running this truck were so industrious that I was rooting for their food to be great. On our way to Berkeley Aquatic Park, Jamie W. and I were strolling on Fourth Street and couldn't help but notice the bright blue food truck between Lululemon and the long-shuttered Spenger's. Now the concept of Asian-influenced hot dogs was not new to us. We had tried Japadog up in Vancouver a while ago, and there's the odd Seoul Hotdog coincidentally in Berkeley. Dojo Dog apparently changes their menu daily and have included non-dog options like fish n' chips, judo ramen, and hot wasabi pastrami. However, we were focused on the expansive hot dog selection and settled on the kinda pricey $9 Sumo Dog (photo: https://bit.ly/3zQ0hgu). It was what looked to be a foot-long frankfurter ladled with their special Japanese curry beef chili and grilled cabbage and topped with chopped scallions. My fav hot dog back in college (and I love hot dogs), so I was so happy to find it on Bay Street Emeryville! But quality has gone down since 5 years ago, and the price has gone up: $8 hot dog :\. The bun and ingredients aren't toasted or prepared as well as before. The original hot dog menu explaining each item is also missing from the truck, so it seems like the owners don't really care anymore. Thanks to Sierra Nevada Torpedo Room, I was introduced to Dojo Dog! After starting my flight from Torpedo Room, I wanted some munchies to go with my drinks. Luckily for me, Dojo Dog was right outside the brewery. My party and I placed our orders and the nice staff members from Dojo Dog delivered it to us inside. We kept it simple and ordered the Dojo Fries and the Chili Cheese Fries. The Dojo Fries were great. Although it's just "regular" fries, the seasoning on it was tasty. It reminded me of the seasoning packet that comes with the Nongshim Shin Ramyun (lol). The Chili Cheese Fries were also delicious! The seaweed flakes are a fantastic crispy addition, and the sauces are not as prominent in this combination. Yum! The sausage is very juicy--I bit into it and got squirted (HAHA sounds so wrong). Not the best, but not the worst. I think I expected Dojo Dog to taste just like Japa Dog, which is a famous Japanese hot dog joint in Vancouver that I used to frequent. Sadly this was not the case. The dogs were really salty and did not offer much in terms of flavor, which was surprising given the ingredients. We got both the WUSHU and KENDO dogs. If I had to choose, the wushu is much better. A lot more taste. $6 for each dog is not bad and we were definitely happy to have food to eat while we sipped beers in the Sierra Nevada Torpedo Taproom. I appreciated that the food truck worker brought them inside for us once they were ready so we didn't have to wait outside. If you're a fan of asian fusion and a sucka for puns then this place is perfect for you. Water-Mulan & Tranquilitea. WHAT? haha SO who wants those ol' boring hotdogs with just the sausage, buns, and mustards. Dojo Dog puts a lot of very interesting topings on their dogs and they're all freaking awesome! I had the Kendo dog with the bonito fish flakes. Interesting combination, a little bit salty but it's fine with me. ooo. the buns were also different, i prefer their buns over the regular hot dog buns. The tea was good and refreshing, not too sweet. My goals before I leave this city is to try all the dogs they have. read more

Got the kendo dog and the wasabi pastrami sub and both were under whelming. I do like the kendo flavors but the bun keep breaking apart. The pastrami on the other habd was an epic fail. Too much cheese (chedder that overpowered everything and was just a big mess in the end. I wish there was more of a pickle kick, and since they used cabbage kimchi would have been perfect if they had it Go for the dogs but the need better bread or maybe go without it and get letter and seaweed which I like more from my college days. read more

When Dojo Dog first opened on Bancroft, there was a huge buzz about how it would be the Asian Top Dog in Berkeley and how cool the design looked. After hearing that its dogs would be martial arts themed, I was more curious. When I saw one of the options was Wushu, I was hooked (because really, does anyone know what wushu is?) I have tried a majority of their menu, and I have to say that I really enjoy all their dogs. The buns are toasted just enough to add a crunch that contrasts the meaty hot dog. The condiments are added very generously and are paired very well. However, portion wise it is essentially just a hot dog, so I didn't get full from it, but I was pleasantly satiated. More recently I tried their Shaolin Monk and was not disappointed by the crunchy seaweed outside and the miso glaze on the inside. My friend got their new Sumo dog, which has Japanese chili curry on it, and she deemed it delicious. Their knockout deal of a dog + tea for $5 was a sweet steal, especially since both their Tranquiltea and Serenatea are delicious! The mango jasmine has a strong mango taste that is refreshing. The other tea is a winter melon jasmine tea, and as someone who grew up on home brewed winter melon tea, this was a pleasant surprise. Yay food trucks! Great service and tasty food. The guy let me try the 2 flavors of teas before picking one. Wintermelon was too sweet, tasted like syrupy grass jelly. Go try if if you haven't yet! To be sure, I was a skeptic at first. Seaweed on my hot dog? But for real, these guys pulled it off. Seaweed hotdogs are delicious, and just might be my new favorite thing. THE DOG: The Ninjitsu Snappy. Juicy. Beef. Nothing at fault here. The Toppings: Seaweed + japanese mayo! So surprised how well this went down. Please try it and become a convert. The Bread: An A+ in my book. Toasted, chewy, delicious sesame crunchiness. CUSTOM DOG: The Wushu Special A little something I made up. Basically I ask for a wushu with nori in addition to the normal wushu toppings. The guys in the truck were nice enough to accommodate without any extra charges! :) Sometimes I'll substitute the cabbage for lettuce, making it the Leafy Wushu Special. Good if you want a little more green to your dog. The price? $4.50 for a pretty sizable amount of deliciousness. The flavors are good, everything tastes fresh (as fresh as a hot dog can be at least). I heard a lot of hype with this food truck, so decided to check it out. The guy at the truck recommended the Wushu Dog (hot dog topped with dried pork, cabbage, and mayo) as that seems to be the most popular. I tried it and was not impressed. 1 star off: It seems like the ingredients do not really fit together. Sure, it sounds cool to do a fancy hot dog with Chinese dried pork, cabbage, and mayo, but the tastes don't really complement each other. Pretty solid food truck. I picked up a Wushu Dog on my way to the Cal football game and was pleasantly surprised. Not sure where they get their hot dogs, but they are pretty good. I wish they were grilled more, but they offer a little snap which is nice. All the hot dogs come on a nice toasted French roll (except the Shaolin Monk which comes wrapped in nori). The Wushu Dog comes with pork sung, flash-grilled cabbage, katsu sauce, and Japanese mayonnaise. Add some Sriracha, and you've got a pretty good tasting hot dog. They were fairly quick to take care of my order. Price-wise, it's alright and offers up enough food for the cost. read more

Dojo Dog is a true foodie gem. Only once in a while do you find a restaurant / albeit a food truck that serves something that you would have never thought would work. Cue Dojo Dog. Dojo's dogs are a twist on the All American hot dog with an Asian flair. This Asian flair ranges from Japanese nori and wasabi mayo to Chinese pork sugo. To be honest, these ingredients definitely caught me off guard when I bit into my first Dojo dog, but I was immediately a fan. To top it all off, Dojo dog is a steal! Especially with the tranquilitea deal, a dog and drink will only cost you $5. Pro tip: Add sriracha. tl; dr - Asian style hot dogs served on a french roll.
