DAMN. Tacos are the jam here. The name, THE KING TACOS (translated for your convenience) really has merit. Had two fish tacos (which are larger and twice as expensive, $3, as the regular tacos) Two spicy pork tacos (my favorite) Two chicken tacos (2nd fav) Two carne asada (not that impressed) And a fish burrito (yes, I am a champion eater... guessing 2,000 calories for lunch?) .... So, the tacos are fantastic, and ranked as above. I heard good things about lengua (tongue), so i'll be returning to get that. However, the burrito was pretty average. Been here 3-4 times and I think this is a solid little operation. They are perfect if your schedule is jammed up and you don't have a lot of time to get your taco fix. The food is tasty and fresh, and served up quick. I see some others have complained about the price hike to $1.50 for a street taco, but when you order 3-4 they also give you chips, salsa on request, radishes, and pickled Jalapeno. A whole pickled Jalapeno which I love to munch as I eat my tacos. I had a nice plate of food for $5.50 (a super taco and a street taco). They now park just off Ashby by the Ironworks building so you have to pull into the lot to see them. The guy running the truck is very friendly as well. read more

I consider myself a taco truck connisseur. I'm always in search for the best and cheapest taco truck, and this truck is the absolute best I've had thus far. I realize that a burrito is pretty standard in it's ingredients; however, each taco truck has it's own unique flavor. So while I pretty much like all taco trucks, if I had to choose only one to go to, this would be the one. It is not the cheapest taco truck I've come across (although $12 for two burritos and a drink isn't exactly expensive... so I'm not complaining), but the sheer deliciousness of the burrito is worth the extra $1. I feel slightly guilty eating there after a tough evening of climbing or working out. But it's not often I find myself in Berkeley, so I'll live with it. read more

Pros - Really close to my work/home - Tacos! - Al Pastor meat was pretty amazing Cons - Relatively pricey - Tortillas This is a great local spot for tacos. I usually go to Tacos Sinaloa in Oakland but was short on time. The truck itself is located in between Ashby and Potter next to Iron Works. The place wasn't busy at 2pm on a weekday. I ordered an Al Pastor, Carne Asada, Carnitas taco and the meat in all 3 were good. They were a little on the small side and were more expensive than I'm used to (1.25/taco). The tortillas really let the whole thing down. I can't remember if it was corn/flour (I assume corn) but they didn't taste like they had been cooked/heated up, which was a real disappointment due to how great the rest of the taco tasted. read more

Mmmm, yeah. I'm going to have to go ahead and sorta . . . disagree with all these people who are 5-starring this truck for things that are either taco truck defaults or are in fact inaccurate. Some compliment the prices, while at $5 for the Super Burrito they're 50 cents more than Sinaloa, Mi Grullense, and other International Blvd standouts (maybe it's Berkeley property taxes causing the inflation). Others have complimented the food, but I found the carnitas (my standard of comparison from truck to truck) chunky and less stringy and flavorful than that of the above-mentioned competitors. Also, it was way more refried-bean heavy and not so much on the meat. My wife got the El Pastor, which was better, but still not as tangy and impressive as that from El Grullo (26th & Inter). read more

Very authentic small soft tacos. Its hard to imagine how they get such good ingredients but they somehow do and the tacos taste fresh and very, very tasty. $1.25 per taco. Three makes a decent sized lunch. You can ask for cheese and even avocado (I think avocado may be an extra .25) which makes it extra tasty. All, in all a great place to get lunch or dinner for less than $5. They also have tostadas and burritos which are also very cheap but I haven't tried them yet. The al pastor pork is amazing! For the hardcore they have lengua and cabeza... I may try the lengua one day, but no cabeza para mi! At lunch the truck is on Ashby just west of 7th behind Berkeley Ironworks. Cash Only! Tacos El Rey has amazing prices, delicious food, lots of space for parking nearby, and awesome customer service! I went to Tacos El Rey with just enough cash to grab a plateful of their $1.50 tacos and a steak torta ($14 to be exact + tip). The lady taking my order saw my son fussing for some fritos he saw in the window-she asked could he have them and offered them up, he was ecstatic! I finally made my way to this food truck. Order the taco with spicy pork and a burrito with chicken. Both were great, though I ate only half my burrito. The spicy pork taco wasn't really spicy at all, but with the added pepper, it did elevate the flavor. The burrito wasn't a large in size as other place would make it. I would say that it was a pretty good standard size...but very filling. The chicken was of white and dark meat. Add that to the additional radish (yum) and more peppers, this dish was very satisfying. I have left to consume the other half for lunch tomorrow. This is my favorite taco truck in the East Bay! Love their carne asada tacos and chicken tacos. Fish tacos are the best I've ever had. I don't like veggie burritos, but this one is the only one I like. Guy who takes orders is so nice. They stop at 8th and Parker St. usually on Wednesdays and Fridays, so watch out for the taco truck horn at around 11 AM. They stay there for around 30 minutes, depends if there are a lot or less people in line. read more

I get really excited when I see this Taco Truck in front of Ironworks when I go climb...even if I already ate and/or they're already closing. I just think taco trucks (or any food trucks) are neat. Their tacos are really delicious. I THINK I had the cabeza, which is the head, and that was amazing. My friends say their horchatas are good, but I wouldn't know...I hate horchatas. Make sure you get there before 9pm for dinner, because they usually close around then (if they are there at all). read more

I don't normally have cravings for Mexican food like so many other Californians, however, I've been meaning to give Tacos El Rey a try (since it backs up behind my climbing gym). The people here are definitely "buena gente"--the man did not even take a second look when I spoke to him and Spanish and did not switch to English (happens to me now and again), so I appreciate that. As for the food, the super burrito al pastor was excellent! Unlike some burritos that are so dry everything just falls out, this one had the right balance of rice, sauce and meat. Definitely a reasonable price at $5ish dollars. I don't think I'll ever understand why everyone raves about the Coca Cola de botella. Sure, they apparently use pure cane sugar, but I honestly can't taste the difference. Save yourself a buck and have the canned goodness of Coke. Been there twice in two weeks now. The carnitas in their burritos are a little different. It's not fried pork, but rather slow cooked pork with some type of sauce. It reminds of Asian style braised pork. Don't get me wrong it's still delicious. $5.50 for regular burrito with refried beans, rice, onions, salsa, cilantro and meat of choice. It's pretty good size for a yummy burrito. I'm taking a star away because I wish they would put hot sauce in their burritos. I've asked for extra hot sauce both times and both times they did not add it. The owner did offer picked jalapenos with sliced radishes with a slice of lime on the side. Legit tacos although it seems prices went up from $1.25 to $1.50 per taco. Now you're paying $6 for 4 tacos. The chicharron seemed a little over fried. It was kinda hard and all you taste is the burnage. All the other meats I had were very tasty. Also wish they have mild and hot salsa. Best chicken and veggie street tacos around!!! Flavorful, full of stuffing, juicy, fresh, and served always with a jalapeno, sliced carrots or radish. $1.25 for a taco? Good. $1.25 for a taco piled high with meats of your choice from tongue, tripe, cowhead, or the regular steak, carnitas? AWESOME!!! Tacos with bottled Mexican Coke? even better! This truck is a great place for a quick bite, before driving out onto the freeway on-ramp right next to it, or during a climbing session at the Berkeley IronWorks behind it. Their tacos are built on two flour tortillas, and on the plate you get some radish and lime and chile for sides. I eat here 2-3 times a week for lunch. Super cheap tacos - $1.25 each. They also have fish tacos which are considerably larger and are topped with cream and fresh avocado - I believe they are $2.50 each. I find that two normal tacos plus a fish ($5 even) is a great sized and tasting lunch. Some days when I'm feeling incredibly malnourished I'll opt for the spicy pork burrito. It's $5.50 and a huge amount of food. Inside it has an excellent blend of refried beans, melted cheese/sour cream, meat, rice, and chopped onions/cilantro/etc. These guys have definitely renewed my faith in the potential of Bay Area Mexican food. read more

The food is very good, maybe not quite like street Mexican tacos, but also way less risky. The tacos are on the small side but the flavor is right, they feel healthier than the real thing on Mexico's streets, but this is the US of A! Probably had to do with the customer after me also ordering a fish burrito (not blaming, actually felt friendly they mentioned they wanted the same). But that didn't bother me and the beans were delicious! Would go there more often if it were closer. The food here is great. I love that I can call ahead and by the time I drive down, my food is always ready. They are also great with large orders. I don't eat a lot of beef, so when I do, I'm often leery of stuff that costs less than a pack of gum (thanks to Michael Pollan). Still, I gave El Rey a shot and had their $1.25 taco. And then I had another. Tiny little soft corn tortillas bedecked with seasoned beef, chopped white onion and cilantro are served hot. You add as much sauce, jalapenos, and fresh radishes as you can pile on. Delish. The vegetarian tacos were also good, if a little unimaginative. Rice, beans, onions, cilantro, avocado queso and crema made a filling meal (like the world's smallest burrito). Service was quick and pleasant and I didn't get the feeling the owners of the truck were trying to cheap-out on the ingredients. Everything tasted fresh. Go EL REY. You can still get good food cheap.
