This is a no frills taco spot. Small and simple menu but flavors not lacking. Service is pretty quick too if that's something you're looking for. The drinks were tasty, could probably use a little bit more alcohol but overall decent.
Tacos Chiwas is always amazing. Not much else to say they are awesome, kind and service is always quick. The food is consistent, delicious and authentic considering we are in downtown Mesa! We will always come to Tacos Chiwas when we are nearby.
If you know, you know--Tacos Chiwas is one of those Arizona staples that quietly builds a cult following... and once you try it, you understand why. I first came across this spot when it was featured on the Food Network and immediately saved it to my foodie list--mostly because I knew my husband would be obsessed. And sure enough... he loved everything. The roots trace back to Chihuahua, Mexico, and you can feel that authenticity in every bite. The tacos are the star for a reason--simple, flavorful, and done right. For my fellow veg heads --don't skip this place. The calabacitas taco and Mexican salad were surprisingly standout options and so satisfying. And the salsa bar? Not playing around. It brings the heat, especially with those grilled serranos (proceed with respect ). This place stays busy--and for good reason. There's a constant flow of people, but service was quick, efficient, and friendly. Seating is a mix of indoor and outdoor, keeping it casual and easy. From the outside, it's honestly a bit of an unsuspecting spot--blink and you might miss it--but that's part of the charm. No frills, just really solid food that keeps people coming back. 4 stars--absolutely worth the stop, especially if you're chasing authentic tacos with a little kick.
Everything you hear about this place too. The tacos are excellent. The service was fine although you order at the front when it gets delivered and it was super fast. Ambulance is typical Mexican place lots of Mexican music. I would come again for sure!
If I come back, I'd definitely just get the mulitas. The tacos were okay but the mulita more delicious. their tripas was fried and soo crispy, pastor, asada, lengua all solid. service is order at the counter and normal wait. Ambiance is also standard. Overall solid but I think LA tacos are better
Tacos Chiwas is a casual dining Mexican restaurant on East Indian School Road in Phoenix. We came here for lunch with my daughter and granddaughter. It's one of our daughter's favorite restaurants. We ordered at the counter and got our number so someone could deliver our food. My wife and I both had Chicken burritos and our daughter had a carne asada quesadilla. We also ordered the Tres Leches Carrot cake. The Tres Leches cake cakes first and our entrees came out shortly after. The chicken burrito had some sort of mild seasoning and was delicious! I added some toppings from the toppings bar. Outstanding! Our daughter and her husband often come here, come in the back door, sit at the bar and order food there (might be useful if it's busy :) ). I look forward to eating here again.
Some of the best tacos ive had in years. I frequent a lot of restaurants and trucks locally and try to find spots wherever I travel and Tacos Chiwas is extremely memorable. Highlights for me was the flavorful and tender lengua, what I think is the best barbacoa I've ever had, and fantastic salsas (best avocado salsa I've had). The pastor IS very good but I wanted to call out the others more. Food arrived very quickly after ordering up front, finding a table was easy I think due to some events taking place nearby. The overall vibe is very fun and relaxed - take your time and order seconds- you're worth it.
First time here and nice surprise! Ordered two barbacoa tacos and a Mexican Salad. The tacos were served with soft corn tortillas, the barbocoa had cilantro and white onions, very tasty. The Mexican Salad was the surprise. Contained corn, radish, lettuce with a zesty dressing. Service at front where you order was excellent. Place was family friendly.all good here'
First night in Phoenix we were starving after the long flight so stopped by Tacos Chiwas, about 30 minutes before closing. (Sorry again ). Interior was way nicer than I expected, definitely don't judge a book by its cover. Lots of seating, full service bar, and fridge full of Jarritos in flavors I've never seen before. Staff were friendly and service was speedy. The food was delicious and affordable! Crowd favorite was the barbacoa! Also they have a house draft beer if you're into that. Honestly we'll probably stop by again before we leave.
The best spot to get authentic Chihuahua style gorditas and street tacos. The chile rojo or picadillo gorditas are always a hit. Salsa bar for your toppings and even a bar area for those looking to have a house made marg or draft. The tortillas taste freshly made and cannot wait to be back again soon!
What a great casual taco place! Great vibe. Excellent tacos. Only one I didn't like was the taco Chiwa - too cheesy for even me. All the other tacos were great. Great drinks, and the hidden gem is the salad - so good!
Our friends always rave about this spot and I'm so glad we finally got to try it!! The al pastor and asada tacos were fire!!! And the elote en vaso tasted just like the ones in Mexico! The cocktails were also very tasty! Overall the best part were the green salsas and the bombbb roasted seranos!
Extra triple double triple extra YUM . I treied the Elote and the calabacitas tacos . Their horchata is good too . It's a small hole in the wall but cute decor and fun for a casual date night or friend night out :) wait staff is nice and the SALSA .... Omg gooooooood.

I made it!! It's been a long time coming!! Thanks to Triple D's recent airing of this restaurant, I told my friends that, "I NEED to go! Back me up!" Lol Thankfully, they all agreed, and we came after a difficult hike. We were starving and ordered all the meats we can get. My tacos with el pastor, el pollo, and carne were soooo satisfying. Honestly, it was nice to have the salsa bar, but the meal would have tasted lovely without any add-ons. I also for the first time in a long while ordered a horchata. Fair warning: Super cinnamon-y. Best tacos I've had in a while! I tried the barbacoa, taco chiwas and carnitas tacos. All three were incredible!! Some of the people I dined with ordered the elote which looked amazing, I definitely want to try that next time. Food came out fast and they have a few salsas to choose from. Everyone working was nice and helpful. There is parking around back. Indoor and outdoor seating. I cannot wait to come back. read more

Tacos Chiwas personally did not live up to the hype for me at all. First my tacos where served to me cold - not even mildly warm. I bit into one taco and it was cold (I finished said taco waiting for the server to come back) and told her my tacos where cold. She then proceeded to take 10mins to correct the problem, and brought me 2 piping hot tacos. That aside, I've had plenty of better tacos. The asada tasted too gamey for my liking and I can get down with some tripas and barbacoa - but the asada was just not good in my opinion. The tortillas have an interesting after taste. The chicken quesadilla was pretty flavorless, which is hard to believe considering they use asadero cheese. Salsa's have no flavor just spice. The agua is clearly made from packets, horchata didn't have that creamy flavor a good horchata has. Sadly I won't recommend Tacos Chiwas to anyone or go back. read more
Really great restaurant. I found it when I went to the VA and have been back multiple times even though it is pretty far from me. The tacos are small and pricy but very very good and I would say worth the premium price. Honestly you can't really find a taco under $3 anymore. 10/10 would recommend! read more

Visited during a quick PHX layover. Order at Kiosk, Counter, or Bar depending on where you want to wait. Clean, cafeteria style seating or bar service available. I didn't try the margaritas but they had several flavors available. I ordered the Quesadilla with Asada. Portion seemed small at first for the price but it was plenty filling. Asada was tender with good flavor and served with an amazing spicy salsa that took the flavor to the next level. read more
Delicious variety and nice interior! Glad I got to go to a taquería that specializes in Chihuahua style food. The service was quick and the staff were kind. The only thing I messed up was eating the tacos (I thought they'd provide salsa when serving) and then realizing after that there was a pour yourself salsa bar all the way across from where I was sitting! Don't make that mistake! I tried 4 tacos- camarón/shrimp, al pastor, barbacoa, and pollo. I remember enjoying the pastor and barbacoa- those were good. Also, DO get their Horchata- it's so delicious! I can see why this place is so popular for authentic eats! read more
Airport restaurant, Terminal 4 by Gate 5 The good: margarita bar Not-so-good: Pollo tacos (come in 3s). Chewy cubed chicken, red pickled onions and barely any cilantro. Corn tortillas all tore and cilantro crema was spicy but not flavored well. Friendly service and quick enough for airport. Bathrooms and Admirals Lounge are close. read more
A solid taco place. I like their shrimp option, which sets them apart in a good way. Their vegetarian taco option isn't my favorite because texturally, the squash can get a little soggy with the thicker, softer corn tortilla they use. You gotta go with a Gordita (but you won't regret it!) If I'm looking for the cheapest tacos in town, I go elsewhere, but the prices are still better than a lot of competitors. This is the best place for a nice margarita with your tacos without breaking the bank. Easy parking, easy ordering, good service, salsa options, chill atmosphere. I saw this place on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Since it is in Phoenix area where I live I wanted to give it a shot. Nice open spot with a lovely covered parking area if you can grab a space. The ordering is normally counter, but we sat at the bar to circumvent. The service was very attentive and friendly. We tried to order what we like and some of what Guy tried. We ordered tacos barbacoa 4.5/5, asada 3.5/5, pastor 3/5. We tried gorditas rajas 3.5/5 and picadillo 3.5/5. We had elote 4/5. We were still hungry and had a quesadilla asada 4/5 (however way too expensive at $10 for what we received). The margaritas were very tasty. read more
In the Uptown Phoenix area you will find excellent tacos @ Tacos Chiwas. They are unique, as they are done with recipes from the Chihuahua region. The Al Pastor is some of the best I have ever had. Very well marinated. After one bite I was expecting Guy Fieri to burst throw the wall and congratulate me for becoming a resident of Flavortown. Salsa bar is on point, you must try the grilled hot peppers. The carna asada is good, slightly different from typical Sonoran style. This is not your average taco shop, more upscale with a high end tequila bar. I don't think you could go wrong with anything on the menu. They also have a cozy outside shaded patio. Perfect spot to bring guests from out of town. read more

Went there for lunchtime and idk why I hadn't been there before. Actually, I do know, the mixed reviews and omg am I glad that I went to check for myself. Delicious! The green chili gordita was bomb! Super delicious taco joint! You order at the counter here and then they bring it to you. It's a cute little place with a bar area and a patio. Love that they have a salsa bar. I ordered a calabacitas taco and a rajas quesadilla. Always a plus for me when there's a good vegetarian option on the menu! My husband got carne asada tacos and a plain cheese quesadilla to share with our son. They make their own corn tortillas for the tacos and you can tell because they taste so fresh! Veggies in my calabacitas taco were so fresh too. Quesadillas were nice and cheesy and cooked to perfection. I loved the green salsa the most, the red was not mine or my husbands fave though. The cream was really good. Food had a little kick without being overly spicy! Pricing was as expected, was about $40 for everything we got. Had wanted to try this spot for SO long and really glad we finally did! read more

Stopped in for some tacos & a margarita and realized my review needed an update!! I had the Al pastor, lengua & barbacoa tacos, all the meats were grilled perfectly, lots of flavor, added green salsa from the salsa bar and a roasted serrano. The margarita was a pretty sunset color with a Tajín rim. It paired perfectly with my tacos. We sat at the bar and saw a dessert pass by and after learning it was tres leches carrot cake .. wow.. yes please! I would come back just for this dessert. Definitely homemade carrot cake, thick cream cheese frosting and crunchy bits on top. Service was fast and friendly, there is plenty of bar and indoor seating. read more

Love the vibe of this place! Very relaxed and down to earth. Tried three different tacos and the barcoa and carnitas were my Favorite. I also loved the little salsa bar I could choose from! Tacos Chiwaś - A Flavorful Surprise at the Airport I wasn't expecting much from airport food, but Tacos Chiwaś totally changed my mind. I was tired and looking for a quick bite. The carne asada tacos and a side of chips with salsa was Muy bien and wow -- everything was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. The staff was quick and friendly, and despite the airport rush, my food came out fast. The tortillas tasted homemade, and the meat was juicy and well-marinated -- not the usual bland airport fare. Prices were reasonable for an airport location, and there were spots to sit and relax before boarding. If you're passing through PHX, Tacos Chiwas is definitely worth a stop -- especially if you're craving something authentic and satisfying before a flight. read more

Okayyyy scrumptious tacos for the first taco Tuesday in June. What a way to celebrate. Patio was bomb. Good was bomb. Literally was at the lil salsa station (haven't even sat down yet) and they handed me my tacos. Remarkable. Asada was the best out of the three I tried. BEWARE OF THAT RED SALSA I'm so good with spice but it bites back. Going to train my taste buds and I'll be back to try again. read more
