Tacos Chiwas is a casual dining Mexican restaurant on East Indian School Road in Phoenix. We came here for lunch with my daughter and granddaughter. It's one of our daughter's favorite restaurants. We ordered at the counter and got our number so someone could deliver our food. My wife and I both had Chicken burritos and our daughter had a carne asada quesadilla. We also ordered the Tres Leches Carrot cake. The Tres Leches cake cakes first and our entrees came out shortly after. The chicken burrito had some sort of mild seasoning and was delicious! I added some toppings from the toppings bar. Outstanding! Our daughter and her husband often come here, come in the back door, sit at the bar and order food there (might be useful if it's busy :) ). Some of the best tacos ive had in years. I frequent a lot of restaurants and trucks locally and try to find spots wherever I travel and Tacos Chiwas is extremely memorable. Highlights for me was the flavorful and tender lengua, what I think is the best barbacoa I've ever had, and fantastic salsas (best avocado salsa I've had). First night in Phoenix we were starving after the long flight so stopped by Tacos Chiwas, about 30 minutes before closing. (Sorry again ). Interior was way nicer than I expected, definitely don't judge a book by its cover. Lots of seating, full service bar, and fridge full of Jarritos in flavors I've never seen before. Tacos Chiwas personally did not live up to the hype for me at all. First my tacos where served to me cold - not even mildly warm. I bit into one taco and it was cold (I finished said taco waiting for the server to come back) and told her my tacos where cold. She then proceeded to take 10mins to correct the problem, and brought me 2 piping hot tacos. That aside, I've had plenty of better tacos. The asada tasted too gamey for my liking and I can get down with some tripas and barbacoa - but the asada was just not good in my opinion. The tortillas have an interesting after taste. The chicken quesadilla was pretty flavorless, which is hard to believe considering they use asadero cheese. Salsa's have no flavor just spice. The agua is clearly made from packets, horchata didn't have that creamy flavor a good horchata has. Sadly I won't recommend Tacos Chiwas to anyone or go back. read more

Delicious variety and nice interior! Glad I got to go to a taquería that specializes in Chihuahua style food. The service was quick and the staff were kind. The only thing I messed up was eating the tacos (I thought they'd provide salsa when serving) and then realizing after that there was a pour yourself salsa bar all the way across from where I was sitting! Don't make that mistake! I tried 4 tacos- camarón/shrimp, al pastor, barbacoa, and pollo. I remember enjoying the pastor and barbacoa- those were good. Also, DO get their Horchata- it's so delicious! A solid taco place. I like their shrimp option, which sets them apart in a good way. Their vegetarian taco option isn't my favorite because texturally, the squash can get a little soggy with the thicker, softer corn tortilla they use. You gotta go with a Gordita (but you won't regret it!) If I'm looking for the cheapest tacos in town, I go elsewhere, but the prices are still better than a lot of competitors. This is the best place for a nice margarita with your tacos without breaking the bank. Easy parking, easy ordering, good service, salsa options, chill atmosphere. In the Uptown Phoenix area you will find excellent tacos @ Tacos Chiwas. They are unique, as they are done with recipes from the Chihuahua region. The Al Pastor is some of the best I have ever had. Very well marinated. After one bite I was expecting Guy Fieri to burst throw the wall and congratulate me for becoming a resident of Flavortown. Salsa bar is on point, you must try the grilled hot peppers. The carna asada is good, slightly different from typical Sonoran style. This is not your average taco shop, more upscale with a high end tequila bar. I don't think you could go wrong with anything on the menu. They also have a cozy outside shaded patio. They have a bar inside with tequila, on tap draft beer. They are short-staffed, so you order at the front, then pay, get your order number, and then find your table. Multiple tvs playing professional sports (MLB). A bit loud inside to be able to carry on a conversation. They have a patio area for outside dining and also mostly inside dining. The servers are friendly and welcoming! Gordita (Flour) - Deshebrada Roja: Red Chile Shredded Beef, Potatoes, Beans (3.5/5). The beef and potatoes were flavorful, spicy, and tender. Parts of the gordita were firm/dense/tough. I appreciated that it was house-made. Tacos (Handmade Corn Tortillas) Pastor: Marinated Pork, Cilantro, White Onions (4/5). It was very tasty, nicely marinated. I would get this again in a heartbeat. Tripas: Beef Tripe, Cilantro, White Onions (4/5). I liked that they deep-fried it, but some pieces were pretty dry. Otherwise, it was good. Both corn tortillas were cool, not warmed on the flat top. Horchata (4/5) - smooth, not chalky. You could enjoy the rice and cinnamon! We were, unfortunately, very disappointed with this restaurant as a whole. We came from out of state and made sure to drive 30 minutes out of our way because of all the buzz surrounding this place. The menu is very small/limited, not a big deal. The prices were on the high side, but could have been worthwhile if the taste or portions matched the price. We spent over $60 for: 2 burritos (one asada one pastor) $11 ea 1 bean and cheese burrito 1 carnitas taco 2 chicken tacos $3.50 ea 1 chicken quesadilla $11 When I ordered I asked if they had a kids bean and cheese burrito, the employee said they didn't but it wasn't a very big burrito anyways, and it's the size of the other burritos (I saw she caught herself, but that was my first clue). When the food arrived it was in fact TINY! I spent $11 on a burrito that was all tortilla and little to no filling. I was able to wrap my hand around the burrito and have my fingers touch. It was more like the size of a cheap fast food burrito. The menu said it had beans in it, which were practically nonexistent. I describe it as they buttered the tortilla with beans. Beans are sooo cheap, a larger portion of beans could have made a big difference. Everyone agreed their food tasted pretty bland. My pastor burrito was the most flavorful of the meats we tried, but was not my preference. It tasted as if it was not roasted on a trompo, and instead was mostly meat simmered in a lot of sauce. Everyone in my family said their tortillas were cold. The tacos were very small street tacos and were very disappointing for $3.50. They showed no sign of having been heated on a griddle and were cold. The best tasting item was a simple quesadilla, which was also $11 and was disappointingly small for the price, and came with very little other than the meat and cheese (no sour cream, no pico, no tiny scoop of guacamole, just a tiny pile of lettuce and one tomato slice, not what you expect for $11). Here are the positives: The place was very well kept and clean, the bathrooms were clean as well. The employees were friendly and helpful The salsas were good. However, all were VERY spicy, which was fine for me, but my husband could not eat any of them, which is unfortunate because his food needed a little something extra. I liked the caramelized onions at the salsa bar. I threw a ton in my burrito, which improved the size and taste a little bit. I don't usually like leaving low star reviews if speaking with staff or a manger would have been a better course. However, I don't think feedback would have made a difference in our experience , as none of the things I described were simply mistakes or a bad day. I saw this place on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Since it is in Phoenix area where I live I wanted to give it a shot. Nice open spot with a lovely covered parking area if you can grab a space. The ordering is normally counter, but we sat at the bar to circumvent. The service was very attentive and friendly. We tried to order what we like and some of what Guy tried. We ordered tacos barbacoa 4.5/5, asada 3.5/5, pastor 3/5. We tried gorditas rajas 3.5/5 and picadillo 3.5/5. We had elote 4/5. I ordered from this place to try something new. I should have stuck to my regular place. The food was greasy and tasted weird. I appreciate that the sauces were actually spicy so this is why 2 stars but still had strange flavors. My friend and I both ordered a carne asada taco & carnitas. She ordered a pastor and I ordered a chicken. We agree the carne asada was our least favorite. Carnitas came in 2nd place. She disliked the pastor the least. I disliked chicken the least.
