I fall in love with Taco Deli's Mexican papas every.single.time.

We had the Mexican mashed potatoes and a couple of different tacos. The potatoes were the best. The tacos seem "high end" but they lack flavor. The salsa was great bc it added flavor too the tacos. Service is top notch! They are dog friendly as well. read more

Four taco joints within a mile of each other! Too many choices! My visit to Tacodeli was a while back, but I guess the fact that I forgot to share the experience shows a little about how underwhelming the visit was. I had attempted before to go to the far north location, near Parmer and Mopac, but the line out the door sent me elsewhere. So this was my first visit to any Tacodeli. I went for breakfast and had 3 tacos: chorizo, egg, and cheese; the Jess special; and, a sirloin, egg, and cheese. All of the tacos were somewhat bland and lacking any seasoning. The best-tasting of the three was the sirloin taco, and that would have been a last pick of mine because that's just not a real breakfast taco to me. i only ordered it on the recommendation of the counter clerk. The sauces offered were also, surprisingly, bland. They had no flavor, and their specialty sauce just tasted like liquid with some heat. I'll try again for lunch sometime, but the breakfast this time doesn't warrant a return trip for breakfast time. The restaurant itself is cool, living in the same building as the new home of the second incarnation of Uchi (now THAT's somewhere I want to go when it opens). There's plenty of indoor and outdoor eating space, too. Along with the new, soon-to-open Torchy's location on Burnet, this is the 4th taco place in the area, including the 2 Taco Shack locations nearby. This is probably why the Lamar Taco Shack is now open on Sundays. Otherwise, if people tried the other two places on Sundays they might not return to the Shack. Sadly, the new Torchy's location is directly (as in I could see it from my front porch) across the street from a rental house I just moved out of. :-( read more

Probably my most favorite taco place in Austin, the only downside is that it is always busy at lunchtime unless I get there before 11:30 am.

If the environment were more friendly it would be 5*. Tacos and salsas are world class. This is what Austin does well

I went on a "taco crawl" so that I could have a more educated opinion about the best tacos in Austin. First I went to Torchys, which I honestly think had the BEST shrimp tacos I've ever had. There were pickled onions, cojita cheese, smokey chipotle mayo. It was amazing. Then I went to Tacodeli. I was super excited about it because I'd heard such great things. I ordered the shrimp taco, wanting to have an apples to apples comparison, and to be honest, it was gross. It was super oily, with just onions and peppers. There was no salsa served with it, no cheese, nothing to make it special. It really had no flavor. Go to Torchys! read more

Taco Deli is the ( . )( . )'s. I like the N. Lamar location, good parking, clean, it's not cramped inside and they are very consistent with the quality of the food. The Cowboy Taco is one of the greatest things I have ever put in my mouth. The Breakfast Tacos are great too. I've actually never been dissatisfied with any of the tacos I've order here. I love Tacodeli not only because they taste great, but because they use local ingredients. Their breakfast tacos use ORGANIC egg! Knowing that I can eat organic eggs outside of my kitchen is very comforting and gratifying. Being a slight taco traditionalist, I'm not the biggest fan of mashed potatoes in my breakfast taco. It's still tasty, non-the-less. I also appreciate the vegetarian friendly menu. I always love getting to choose corn tortillas over gluten filled flour tortillas. The sauces are also to die for! We buy them in bulk on occasion. I only wished they served breakfast tacos later in the day for us nightowls. read more

Possibly the best tacos on earth. Top shelf quality beef, chicken pork. They have a lot of Yucatan mexican dishes, including the particularly good Cochinita Pibil. Their CP is as good as the very best I've had in family run restaurants in Quintana Roo state, Mexico. Not a single detail is overlooked or lost in the translation. Let me preface this, I LOVE Tacodeli's breakfast tacos. HOWEVER, the service at the N Lamar location was terrible. I called in to order a couple breakfast tacos and some queso and the guy asked me my name. I told him my name twice, and he had misheard me the first time as "Lisa." I politely told him my name was not Lisa, and he said he understood. When I got there, it took 10 minutes for the asshole counter guy to find my order, and was rude every step of the way. When they did find my order, by my phone number, the name under my order was "Lisa Kaitling".... nowhere near my name. The young man didn't even apologize for the mixup, threw me my food and said "Well...at least it's here." I won't be going back to this location, and it's obvious the dude working the counter wouldn't even care either. Maybe next time learn that your service needs to be a good as your food. read more

I've lived here for 3 years and today was my first time here! The staff was friendly, the menu extensive, the queso yummy and my tacos delicious. This location was jam packed on a Saturday afternoon, but we were lucky in getting a table inside in the air conditioning. Now I'll need to start rotating my taco places :) read more

Killer tacos!!! We stopped in on Sunday for an after sxsw meal and the line was out the door. This was my first Tacodeli experience, usually I stick to Torchy's, so I was doubtful that it would live up to my expectations. The line moved really fast and I ordered a picadillo and a tacoloco. The tacoloco was real good (Adobo braised brisket with caramelized onions and mushrooms topped with guacamole, cilantro and queso fresco). The other taco I had wasn't something I would order twice, it still was a good taco, it just was not quite right for my taste buds that morning. I finished it using their delicious jalapeno sauce. "They just kicked it up a notch" First off the owner and co-owner are great down to earth guys and all the people that work at this particular location are very friendly and helpful. Taco Turn Ons: Chips: They do it right!! My favorite chips ever, El Milagro (which is a local company downtown). I buy these chips at the grocery store and was soo happy when I found out TacoDeli uses them. Salsa/Sauces: The salsas are fantastic, ranging from mild to sauces that actually are hot (not just ones that say hot. I like my sauce to have a kick and when someone says hot and it doesn't make my nose run. Well, sorry you don't know how to mak a "hot" sauce, you know how to make a sauce. Doña sauce has a great kick to it along with a distinct flavor. The Habenero Sauce is a pure orange goddess, sweet and packs some heat. The Verde Sauce is a great mild sauce/salsa. Queso: Creamy goodness, even if you're not hungry, you can always eat more of this stuff. Seasoned just right, great cheese blend. Beans: Refried black beans, way better than just refried beans (which i'm not a fan of). Breakfast Tacos: First off, free range eggs, huge plus. Second the Otto is amazing, avocado in my breakfast taco. Um, yes please! Taco Turn Offs: Quacamole: Sad to say I really don't like their quacamole. And Avocado is my favorite thing in the world. Way, way too much lime! I know you don't want to make it turn brown, but the lime needs to be toned down. Also, a little over priced on the quacamole. You can get quac cheaper at most other taco place. Catering: I love the food and the meats are juicy, tender, and delicious. However, the catering prices are rather ridiculous. A friend of mine had tacodeli catered for a boat party. Good lord that was one hell of a bill!! Needless to say come for breakfast or lunch and check it out! Great local place that gets packed very quick. Wish they were open later than 3PM though. read more

BEST TACOS IN THE WORLD! I have lived in NYC, LA, Dallas, London, and traveled the world in search of tacos and these are still the best I have found. The only problem with this place is that their tacos are more addictive than crack. I go ATLEAST twice a week. They need to open a taco rehab center as a result of this place. Cowboy, Bison, Chicken Pasilla, Chili Relleno, Tuna, Scallop, and pretty much all the other specials are great. Breakfast tacos are amazing too. Wheat tortillas are a must. And lets not forget the DONA SALSA. So spicy, so good. One of the many highlights of fine establishment. AND the staff is incredibly friendly and the manger is very involved. GO TO THIS PLACE NOW. The eternal fight! torchys vs tacodeli. They are different. Torchys is better if drunk or hungover, taco deli better if feeling healthy or too guilty after eating. Torchys has beer and drinks at most establishments, tacodeli doesn't. None is really mexican style but tacodeli way closer. read more

I tried this place for the first time & was surprised by how much I liked it. When we walked in one of the employees came over to see if we needed any help deciding. He described all the tacos & recommended his favorites, making it much easier to decide. My mom chose the Mexico City Sirloin & I ended up getting the Frontera Fundido Chicken, along with an order of salsa & queso to share. We ordered at the counter, were handed our salsa, chips & queso, & by the time we got our water & sat down another employee was bringing us our food. The salsa & queso portions were smaller than I anticipated, but were so filling that after we'd finished we both agreed they were the perfect size. The tacos were fantastic, easily the best I've found in the area, and the salsa & queso were good as well. Against my will, I was raised on sloppy, greasy Texmex. I am lucky as an adult to have found a place that does Texmex right. Tacodeli cares about quality ingredients and preparation; the tacos are excellent. Other than the poblano one, which is underroasted, you can't go wrong with any of them. Delibelly, Lomo, Fish, Picadillo, etc are awesome. This is my favorite place to eat in Austin, and I often take visitors to here and East Side King to represent the city's flavors. It's our weekend routine for lunch. I actually introduced the Saturday and Weds special Delibelly to my British boyfriend when he first moved to Austin and he has been in love with it since. I love tacodeli. One of the many places I miss from my old neighborhood. My favorite at the moment is a cowboy taco with doña sauce. My experience today though made my week. It's been a hell of a week (food poisoning, cold or something, ear infection, missed an exam...). After going to the doctor I was just around the corner from tacodeli so I had to go, recovering GI tract be damned. But, it was still a quarter til 11 so I was perusing the menu trying to kill time when the guy working the register asked if I had any questions, then offered to see if the tacos I wanted could be made even though I was early, offered me a glass of water while I waited, and was just overall genuinely nice to me. That's what makes it 5* read more

I have only been here once and I absolutely loved it. The food was incredibly fresh. That includes the homemade salsas/sauces. The menu is very diverse and unique. Did I mention how fresh everything was? Just amazing. We ate here for breakfast on the way to the botanical gardens. It is small inside but there is plenty of seating outside. Just yum! read more

We had a catered lunch brought in from them last weekend. Very tasty and creative. We had a choice of the fundido chicken or steak, and a grilled portabella mushroom for the vegetarians. Rice and beans also came with it. Everything was spot on. I took one of their menus from a short stack at the end of the table. I noticed that al pastor is one of their offerings.
