Given the number of times that I go to taco deli, I think it deserves 5 stars. It is always solid, and have great breakfast and lunch tacos. We also get taco deli delivered to my work every once in a while, and those are always good days :) (so I can also vouch that their catering is good) I usually take out of town guests here for breakfast tacos one morning, and they seem to enjoy it. Tacodeli is great for those with Gluten Free diet needs. You can get the tacos on corn tortillas and if you tell them that you are gluten free they will make recommendations on what is ok to order. The Fundido tacos with chicken and the Cowboy tacos are incredible. The problem that I always have is every taco I've had there is great and I can never make up my mind. They have so many different types of tacos that you can spend two weeks of going there every day for lunch and still not try them all! They have a blue plate special which is tacos with beans and rice. My suggestion is DO NOT GET IT and just get another taco to try. Their blue plate special is like the salad bar at a brazilian steakhouse - it just fills you up so that you don't have room for the good stuff! The only reason that I've given TD four stars instead of five is that the location is always packed at lunch and I sometimes can't go there due to the lines. They have menus at the door when you walk in, on the wall as you stand in line, and at the front counter and people STILL wait until they get to the order taker and then take five minutes to figure out what they want (need a separate line for clueless people there - they could be nice and call it the 'first timer' line). Boy was I wrong. As soon as I walked into the restaurant, everything was so clean. Got in line and the manager came by, during peak hour and a packed room, to personally ask if we were new to the place so he could introduce the menu to us. After we ordered and sat down, I asked my friend, "Wouldn't it be crazy if he personally delivers ours?" I want to like Tacodeli, but I just can't get over that they're only open until 3 AND they stop serving breakfast at 11. Like, what's the point. If you're only gonna be open for an hour and a half without serving breakfast tacos, arguably the best kind of taco, for more than 10 minutes. Okay okay, I'm exaggerating, but it's incredibly irritating. They don't even serve bean and cheese tacos! What is that! Bean and cheese is THE simple staple of any taco place, not to mention it's incredibly easy to make. Alright, onto the quality of the food. I don't know what it is, but Tacodeli makes me sick. I literally get sick like clockwork, as does my girlfriend, every single time. Maybe it's the salsa? I'm most definitely not allergic to tacos, so. Who knows. Excellent value for the price, and excellent food on top of that. How can you lose? I had the Cowboy and the Pork Mole tacos. Those two will fill you up without stuffing you, and they're just downright delicious. I swear the ingredients must be fresh, and the flavor/taste combinations are spot on. Add your choice of Tacodeli house salsas to taste (anywhere from mild to very hot). Strangely enough, I find their tastiest salsa to be one of the mild ones, and kind of a spicy food fan. Whatever--it's all about the taste and not the Scoville unit count. I topped this off with a cherry cola Maine Root soda that Tacodeli had "on tap" from the soda fountain. Again, excellent. Word on the street is that these are the white man's tacos. I don't care, they're damn delicious! I had to go to Tacodeli twice while I was in Austin for the week. This is MY Taco Deli. I've been to a few others but this one is closer to my home, thus, the close personal relationship. I get the Cowboy tacos for lunch and the BEC for breakfast (if you don't know that BEC means "bacon, eqq, cheese" then there is not much I can say, but, now, you do). You have to drink the aqua fresca -- try watermelon with the lime. OMG, that is tasty. That is life expanding. That is pretty damn good. This is a good place to see people. Today, I had breakfast and I saw Melania Trump and Ivanka. Where was Donald? Supposedly playing golf. As others have mentioned, there does seem to be a cult following of Taco Deli, just like Torchy's. When we first moved and people were talking about tacos in Austin, it appeared people were either Team Taco Deli or Team Torchy's. After this visit, I think I'm leaning towards Team Torchy's for tacos and Team Taco Deli for chips & queso. Overall the experience was pretty good but being new and having never dined at Taco Deli, we (BF and I) weren't sure how big the tacos were. The nice gentleman who took our order assured us that they were generously stuffed in the middle. Great! So we get our yummy chips & queso and we snacked on those while we waited. The cheese didn't seem overly processed like melted velveta and had a really great cheddar, spiciness flavor. i think there must have been diced green chiles in it too. Maybe it was sautéed poblanos? Anyways, it was delicious. Definitely some of the better queso I've had since being in Austin. I notice a salsa bar, which is a nice touch, and we try them out. We really liked the medium and added it to the queso. The habanero sauce was not as hot as the spicy green sauce and seemed like it was nothing but pureed & strained pepper with vinegar. I didn't think the taste was good but we did like the spicy as it was deceptively the hottest sauce out of the trio. When the tacos came, I was disappointed at how small mine were. I got the Mexican City Chicken and the Carne Asada. I love authentic Mexican Street food but when there are more onions than anything else, that's all I tasted. The filling looked minimal and when there are more onions, it turned out not so good. The carne asada was better and I liked the avocado that came on top. Again, I thought my tacos were just mediocre. Based on this alone, I have to join Team Torchy's but if I wanted great chips & queso, I will visit Taco Deli in a heart beat. read more

I was pretty torn when trying to figure out what to rate Tacodeli. Overall I their tacos are pretty tasty but I was recently disappointed with a couple of tacos I order this past Tuesday (a chicken one and a bison one). The menu described both of the tacos as having "caramelized onions" on them, but the onions on the tacos were barely even translucent. If the menu had just said "onions" not a problem but I had higher expectations when I ordered my food. I really wouldn't have minded waiting an extra 5 or 10 minutes if it meant getting actual caramelized onions on my tacos. Delicious. I don't live in Austin anymore, but I insist on eating here each time I come back. The meat (regardless of what kind-- we've tried it all) is always perfectly marinated. The veggies are fresh. And while I know tacos are not really "healthy," theirs aren't drenched in grease like most places; I don't feel guilty at all after stuffing my face here. Tacodeli is fantastic. Their ingredients always taste fresh. The flavor combinations are terrific. The only thing that's remotely a negative is the long lines that sometimes stretch out the front door and indicate a lack of seating inside. But even when the line is insane, it doesn't take too long to get through it. I eat here one or two times a week. I'd eat here damn near every day if I could. One of favorite places in Austin. So good that I wanted to get more. I rarely rate 5 stars on a first visit, but this place more than earned it. I tried the Tikin Xic, Banh Mi, Mole Steak: all knocked it out of the park. Wow! I cannot wait to come back. Why do they close at 3pm? It's criminal! Update: tried 3 new ones. Cowboy, pulled pork (can't remember the name, it was the first pork option, and the new shimposito. Of these 3, none were bad, but not as impressive as my first batch. The pulled pork one was outstanding. Highly recommend. The cowboy wasn't for me, but I can see others loving it. Strong pepper, corn, and peppercorn taste. It just reminded me a bit too much of the flavors I find in microwave tex-Mexican, even if it is significantly better. The Shinposito wasn't at all bad, but lacked the amazing power of Tikin Xic. This time I actually got to use the salsas though, which really made each taco better. Last time the tacos were just too good to change any thing. I didn't add anything to the pulled pork, it was just right. They've gotten rid of the steak mole which is horrible and sad. When I yelped for a "breakfast taco" and saw tacodeli, I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did. A few things I noticed: Wow that line was long, and it was just hitting 12. It was Saturday, though. Menu was expansive, but up to $4 for a taco?! Clean. Had guys wiping down the tables constantly. Very friendly service. I got the popeye and the vaquero breakfast tacos, they tasted great and as I'm writing this at 4pm I'm still full. My galpal had some asada or pork tacos, can't remember, but they had huge slices of fresh avocado on them. Looked yummy. She had to take the third one home because she was so full. That's how many people are calling on their twenty billion line phone (oh, yeah - we are always call-in to-go. We ate in twice before realizing that listening to the conversations of self-congratulating yuppies was giving us indigestion). And then, if we get through and order, we need to park around the corner in the neighborhood and hike in (I bet the neighborhood just loves that). I know, it is stupid to hate on a business for being successful, but there is successful and then there is crazy ridiculous. WTF - it's a taco. Anyway, I like the bean, cheese and avocado on corn. When I can get through and brave the crush. As a vegetarian, I like that they offer many options for my kind or allow you to custom order. Keepin' it meat-free. One big downfall (food-wise): I don't how such a popular place cannot roll a taco since they do it 1,000/day. But somehow, the edge of foil is always in the center or the taco was rolled open and the foil has become one with filling. So, either: a) you tear in like the hungry maniac you are and hope that foil is digestible (I don't think it is, though), or b) try to remove all the foil and end up taking out all the filling in the process. I went to Austin about two weeks ago to float the river in New Braunsfel and to just visit the city where I spent the best 4 years of my college life. My friend that I was staying with told me I had to try this place out because it is the BEST tacos that I will ever eat. I was a little skeptical of that statement yet very intrigued as to what would prompt my friend to make such a bold statement. So on my very last day in Austin we all decided to come here for lunch. I ordered the fish taco, Cowboy Taco, and the Thunderheart Buffalo Taco. HOLY F'N SH*T I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW F'N UNBELIEVABLE THESE TACOS ARE! MY TASTE BUDS ARE IN OVERLOAD MODE! THESE TRULY ARE THE BEST TACOS I'VE EVER EATEN! The fish tacos are great but I could eat the Cowboy and Buffalo tacos all day! This location is always busy but at least it isn't as cramped as the Spyglass location. It was actually a bit refreshing to get my sauce and drink without bumping into someone. The service was good and they are fairly quick considering the size of the location. I tried the Otto for the first time and it was ok but it had a too much bean flavor, completely over powered the other flavors but it was good to try a Tacodeli classic. Managed to go twice this past weekend! I don't know if they've always had the Vaquero, but this is my new favorite. Eggs scrambled with roasted peppers and corn. Add a little Dona sauce and I am in heaven. I love that they offer wheat tortillas and their eggs are cage-free (happy eggs!) I also tried the Otto and my old favorite the Popeye (2 different visits--don't judge). The bacon on the Otto was a bit overcooked, but I still loved it so much I didn't even ask for better bacon as I probably should have. I just couldn't part with that lovely combination of beans and avocado and smokey bacon. Popeye, of course, is just as it sounds, awesome cheesy spinach with eggs. Jess' Special is also a favorite from the northside, migas with avocado and mashed potatoes. Try it! My boyfriend and I both noticed that this location seems to be less skimpy than the one up north where we had gone before. Which actually made him okay with going again, being that he didn't feel ripped off. The staff is great here, as the one up north. I freakin' love Tacodeli and wish I could take it with me back to NYC. Austin will always have a leg up on NYC when it comes to tacos, especially breakfast tacos! During my four years at UT, Tacodeli was a constant source of joy for me, in the form of breakfast and fish tacos. It's a growing franchise that will soon have 5 locations in Austin. This location is right by Houndstooth Coffee (perfect if you want some excellent coffee before tacos!) and has plenty of seating inside and a few tables outside too. It gets packed on weekends and during peak hours, and rightfully so. Their menu is separated by meats/seafood and also offers plenty of good vegetarian options, like the Space Cowboy and The Heather. Unfortunately, breakfast tacos are only served until 11am during the weekdays and until 3pm on the weekends -- really wish they were available all day! I love the Jess Special and Migas Taco. 2 tacos should be enough, 3 if you're hungry. My friends always order the queso to share, and it's consistently good. The chips are a little thinner than I prefer (and break easily), but that's a small complaint. Best of all, their selection of drinks is amazing: delicious aguas frescas, local kombucha, limeade, etc. Overall it's a delicious, cheap, and reliable joint in my home state. First time Austin visitor...in town for three days...had Tacodeli all three days for breakfast! It was THAT spectacular the first time I tried it, that I had to go back a second and third time after just to try out the other tacos. Best tacos in my opinion are the Mojo fish, cowboy, and Delibelly tacos. Each bite packs a powerful punch of flavor...probably the best tacos I've had the pleasure of ever scarfing down. The service is great, everyone's always very pleasant, and it's very dog friendly...well, all of Austin is! If you're a first time visitor, a must stop for breakfast and lunch tacos!!! I flew to Austin from San Diego (California's Mexican food hub) to visit my college roommate in his hometown. Back at school in Philadelphia, we would always argue about whether Austin or San Diego had better Mexican food. He was confident that a trip to Tacodeli would persuade me to see things his way. I ordered one Fundito Chicken taco (grilled chicken breast, Monterrey Jack cheese, sautéed poblanos, and onion rajas) and one Delibelly taco (braised pork belly, Goodflow honey tomatillo serrano salsa, avocado, cilantro, and onion). The Delibelly taco was honestly THE BEST thing I have ever eaten. So much so that on my Yelp profile you'll find, "My Last Meal On Earth: Delibelly tacos from Tacodeli in Austin." To this day, I have never had a taco with so much flavor. Tacodeli must fully realize the genius creation they have on their hands as the Delibelly taco is only offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday and Saturday. They also have a chile relleno taco special as well as a beef tongue taco special that I tack on to my standard pork belly order (2) sometimes. Their mole fish taco is also amazing! I know asking you to move in with me on yelp is a little out there, but please, Taco D.. move to Round Rock! The abundance of Tacos in Austin ranks high on my list of favorite things about this city, and Taco Deli is definitely #1 when it comes to my favorite Taco joint. Not only do they have several, delicious Vegetarian options, all of their tacos taste fresh and are prepared consistently every time. I know what to expect when I stop in and I get exactly what I ordered every single time. My favorite taco is the 'Heather' but I often grab the breakfast 'build your own' tacos because they are a little cheaper. Their Mexican mashed potatoes are out of this world (yes, it seems strange to get mashed potatoes on a taco, but try one with refried black beans and mashed potatoes on corn and you will be hooked!). Both the Queso and Guacamole are delicious and they give free refills on chips, which is great since many small Taco Joints charge for extra chips. The salsa bar is wonderful, I love being able to pick my own salsa and grab as much or as little as I would like. The Roja Salsa is so good you could drink it. The Dona salsa is arguably the most flavorful salsa in Austin, but for those with weak taste buds, it is a bit on the spicy side. You can also buy pints of Salsa to go, which I do frequently because it is so tasty! Stopping in around lunchtime at any location, you can expect a wait, but the cashiers move the line quickly and Taco D is on top of their game when it comes to getting orders out. A little trick is to call your order in ahead of time and they will prepare it as a to-go order. Then, just eat there and avoid the line! Pros: Everything except their hours!
