Tried Taco Barn for the first time and it absolutely lived up to the hype worth the drive from Hartford to Newtown. Ambience & Service- Loved the barn-style decor and cozy vibe. Andrew was friendly, attentive, and accommodating especially with my vegetarian request and even making an off-menu espresso martini. Food: Ordered Salsa and guacamole were great, though some chips were overly salty. Tacos were the highlight cauliflower, mushroom, and fried avocado were perfectly balanced and packed with flavor. Others at the table loved the pork belly, jerk shrimp, and chicken options. My husband loved the coconut sauce on jerk chicken and mentioned he felt he was having something out of a Thai food menu. Glazed pork belly was cooked to the perfection and loved the flavor. Our friends in the table ordered chicken Chorizo and mentioned they will be visiting again to try more. I am looking forward to coming here during warmer weather and trying out more food. Dessert- Tres leches had a noticeable cinnamon flavor, not my favorite, but not a dealbreaker. First time visiting Tacobarn and have to say we enjoyed it, but there were some things that could use some help. First off, we sat at the bar and our bartender Sara was AMAZING. Very friendly and approachable, and on the money with her descriptions and opinions on food and drink. Where our visit fell short was mainly two things. 1. The Margaritas are weak. Not enough tequila or mezcal. I'm not I fan of the orange liqueur they use (too sour) and the Joven tequila just doesn't make for a flavorful drink. Give me a solid Reposado instead and use Cointreau for your liqueur and you'd have a banging Margarita. We were also not offered a salted rim. 2. The Chopped Salad. The ingredients are great. Unfortunately the bowl it's served in is far too small and it was absolutely soaked in dressing. There was a pool of it left at the bottom of the bowl. The tacos are street style, which I love. We had 5. Jerk Shrimp, Baja Fish, Hangar Steak, Duck and Peruvian Chicken. All were absolutely delicious, with the Duck and Hangar Steak being the standouts. Guacamole was good, though the portion is small. Large round chips were different z, bud good and flavorful. Those two minor issues and this place would be a 5. This place is gorgeous! Both inside and out. Love the esthetic, it's clean and bright. The downside of it, at least while dining upstairs is that the tables are VERY close together against the wall, which makes it awkward for people to get in/out of the bench side. It is also incredibly loud. It was difficult for my date and I to try and conversation without leaning over the table and talking louder than I'd like to. That aside, Shane, our waiter was friendly, attentive, and gave good recommendations. Checked in with us frequently, but not overbearing The quac was good, but an extremely small portion, even for a "small". The queso was bland, a bit runny, and only at room temperature. The chips being whole tortillas was a bit difference, but the crunch and salt were on point. Tacos: Hanger steak taco - excellent! Duck - a bit dry, could use a little more of the glaze, or possibly another pickled cucumber or 2. Shrimp - The heat was balanced well with the coconut sauce Drinks were good as well! Overall, a wonderful meal, but I'd probably only come back if I can sit outside on their wonderful patio so I don't risk losing my voice mid meal :) read more

If Bar Taco locations are the benchmark food wise in this particular category, Tacobarn comes close. Tacos are generally very good, as is the guacamole. Salsas are solid but the "hot" salsa could arguably use a little more kick. Wait times during peak hours can be lengthy, but service once seated is typically friendly, efficient and fairly expedient. Vibe is a little more white table cloth than most establishments in this category, certainly inviting overall; prices are fair. read more

I recently took a Sunday afternoon ride to tacobarn after hearing so many positive things about it, and also being a long time fan of Chef Adam. I was very happy with my experience overall. I was seated upstairs, where it is very bright and open. I would be weary at peak times as tables aren't super far apart and even on a relatively calm Sunday afternoon it was a bit loud, but that's my taste. Service was friendly. But as one might expect, the main draw was the food, and that delivered. I ordered the chips and habanero/corn salsa, the Mexican Caesar, 3 tacos (cauliflower, baja fish & mushroom), & the smoked sanguine to drink. The drink was tasty and the use of fresh juice was apparent. The chips were very crisp and well fried, but ran out of salsa with quite a few left. The salad was solid. The tacos were the highlight, with the mushroom standing out to me actually as the most flavorful. While I wouldn't say I was blown away, I would definitely go back. It was a very solid place. We tried the birria quesadilla (so rich in the best way), carnitas empanadas (the aji Amarillo aioli was incredible), and a selection of tacos including chicken, duck, fish, and pork belly, all wonderful. Met a few friends there for supper and was very pleasantly surprised. The "barn" is beautiful, with wonderful casual, yet elegant ambiance. Service excellent, and food delicious. Amazing food, great prices, beautiful restaurant. Was so excited to try and was not disappointed. The chips are unique large rounds that you can eat as is or break. My girlfriend really wanted to try this place since its menu seemed similar to bar taco. We ended up going on Saturday night so you can imagine how busy it was. The wait time was estimated to be about an hour but took a-lot less than that to get a table for 2 which was awesome. For starters the place looked amazing. Room was well decorated and designed. Nice dim lighting and the seats were very comfortable. We started off with some chips and guac (very good), beef and chicken empanadas, birria quesadillas(very good too), esquites and it was amazing. Chicken empanadas not much of a fan of but for starters, everything else was very good, especially the esquites (very delicious). Ordered some to go as well lol Ordered tacos as well with our starters/sides. They were good but it did take about an hour for them to come out, a little mix up with the order down in the kitchen but they apologize for it and gave us the tacos + dessert on the house which was very generous of them. This taco spot is a great addition to Sandy Hook! The ambiance alone makes it worth visiting -- it's set in a beautifully refurbished barn with two floors of seating, plenty of space, and lovely, trendy décor. Even though we waited about an hour to be seated (expected during prime-time weekend dinner hours), it didn't feel too bad since we were able to wait outside by the fire pit, which was a really nice touch. Be aware that they don't take reservations, so plan accordingly. Definitely recommend Tacobarn getting on OpenTable to avoid long wait times for customers. That would make such a difference. Also, review the parking instructions on Tacobarn's website or phone recording ahead of time -- very helpful, but you'll want to plan ahead. The wait staff was friendly and attentive, and service was impressively quick despite the restaurant being completely full. The food was fresh, tasty, and well prepared. The jerk/coconut shrimp was delicious, though I would've loved a bit more coconut flavor. Portions are on the smaller side, and the menu is very à la carte -- not like a traditional Mexican/taco restaurant where tacos or bowls come with rice and beans. Just something to keep in mind. The churros were hands down the best we've ever had -- absolutely outstanding! The guacamole (which was excellent in flavor) was a bit of a disappointment in terms of size and presentation. We ordered the "large" for four people and were surprised at how small it was. We also expected it to be served in a molcajete for a bit more presentation value. However, the homemade chips were divine! A few small details could use attention. The silverware and three sauces are kept in a caddy on the table, which felt a bit tacky given the otherwise elevated ambiance. Cocktails were tasty but lacked presentation -- especially compared to another taco restaurant we visited the night before where the portions and cocktail presentation were top notch. Overall, though, it was a great night out. The atmosphere, food quality, and service really shine. With a little more attention to detail on presentation and portions, this place would be next level. From all the good reviews, I so wanted to love this place but was a bit disappointed. It was not terribly busy for a Sunday nite; we went at about 6pm. The hostess was lovely and showed us to a ok table as it was right next to the dirty dishes and prep station of the waiters. I realize that space can be an issue so I understand why they needed to use this space. We were not horribly disturbed; it was just not ideal. Our waiter was nice enough but you can tell he was quite new and lacked some training. We waited 20 min for our first drink order so that was stike one. Our food came quickly but it was not warm and the waiter did not give us plates or napkins so luckily we were right next to the prep station so I could get my own. The flatware was in a bin on the table which I thought inappropriate as who knows how long it was there and who may have touched it. Strike two! Finally we ordered churros for dessert and they were overly crispy on the outside and not cooked well inside; the overly heavy sugar and cinnamon was unpleasant. I will acknowledge the lovely decor and the additional wait staff were also very good and it was appreciated. The location is ideal and the area around the restaurant was quite pleasant. Parking can be a challenge as the restaurant is very busy. They may consider a different plan for order pick up parking vs eat in parking to save spaces for the in house customers. We will go back again to give it another try as so many reviews are very positive.....we may have had an off nite. Mushroom and crema was tasty but the rice was tasteless and on the al dente side (meh). Guac was bland. Best thing was the duck taco which my sister got. I think if the kitchen does a few tweaks, use yellow or some other spiced rice and upscale the Marg's with fresh lime juice not sweet and sour mix this could go up to four stars. I had the carne asada rice bowl, chips (especially good-firm crunchy texture, much more satisfying than the average chip) and guac, and a red Sangria. All were excellent. The rice bowl was just the right amount of food and delicious, but... no leftovers. The service was good and the waiter was fun and friendly. The overall vibe was also good. My only complaint was that the portions were small. My friends who ordered tacos got ... one taco. They had assumed there would be at least 2 or 3. So if you are there for dinner and you order a taco, you should probably order more than one or something to go with it. Also, the tacos from everyone's order came on the same dish, which we thought was strange. In any case, my food was delicious, the vibe was great, and the people were nice. Amazing Food and Atmosphere at Tacobarn! I had such a fantastic experience at Tacobarn in Sandy Hook, CT! The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, and the food looked incredible--and it tasted even better. I went with friends, and we shared a bunch of appetizers that were outstanding. Highly recommend the Quesadilla, Brussels sprouts, and Street Corn! For drinks, my friends raved about the Margarita, but I tried the Spicy Garden, which was refreshing and delicious--definitely my new favorite! We also sampled several taco options, and they were all fantastic. My personal favorites were the Pork Belly and Carne Asada. Worth the wait! I took my daughter on a busy Friday night. Place was packed with mostly families. We were originally told there would be a 20 min wait but they managed to seat us right away. The service was outstanding. I tried 3 different tacos and they were delicious. Some might say they are small tacos (3 bites) but they are also priced accordingly. House margarita was served in a rocks glass which I usually don't like but again, they were delicious and not too expensive. It's all about quality over quantity at the Taco Barn. Me and my two daughters have been enjoying this restaurant for a couple of months now and for the most part the food is good. What I have a hard time with is not taking reservations, which I don't agree. There are many families that come to this restaurant with young kids who don't have the pleasure to wait 1 hr and 20 minutes to feed their child. This was our experience this past Saturday and my daughters were miserable and starving and we were very close in leaving and never returning. When we were finally called for our table our appetizers and one kids quesadilla came quick but no plates or napkins. I ordered a drink which took 25mins to arrive. The chips with the guacamole were good but for some reason the chips tasted extra salty and inedible even when we scraped it off. Overall I like the food, I do think portions are small, staff does take a long time and many times they brought the wrong food over/or our food was sent somewhere else. One more thing that I did notice on Saturday was staff was taking a very long time to bus the dirty tables, when you have us waiting over an hour those tables should be turned quick especially on a Saturday. If I do return it would never be during the weekend which is unfortunate. read more

We ate here last night for first time. My new best Taco place in town. The service was great, the location was very nice and interesting with ample parking, and the food was delicious. Has an outdoor seating area with a firepit that was going but too cold to sit outside at this time, will be nice later in the spring. We had Chips with Guac & Salsa to start and then the Chicken, Carne Asada, Duck, Pork Belly, Avocado & Tuna tacos between the 3 of us and everyone agreed they were all excellent.
