It was fine. Pricey! Went on a Sunday mid afternoon so it was t very busy and service was rather slow considering. They didn't have vegetarian options listed so I had to ask a lot of questions. The bean dip that arrived shortly after we sat down had pork fat and our server did know this when we asked so that was good. I'd like restaurants in CT to make an effort to show vegetarian on their menu. The enchiladas didn't even have a vegetarian option but they came back and gave me one. Anyway, green sauce was good, the entrees were fine but it was quite pricey for Mexican food. read more

The unassuming La Catrina surprised us with pretty decent takeout Mexican. Online menu covers all the bases & then some. Tacos are on fresh corn tortillas with the highlight being the generous protein portions that do not get lost under tons of lettuce sour creme & or cheese. In fact my pork carnitas taco, with onions & cilantro, was elevated by being stuffed with tender roasted pork loin instead of fried pork chunks. My partner's shrimp tacos were excellent as well. Daughter inhaled her steak burrito. The tame/bland red & green side sauces could be improved. As some reviewers noted, food is on the pricey side. Ala carte regular sized tacos are $5.00 each though. Can't comment on the service as we had take out but they packaged everything competently but no salsa & chips ???? read more

The food is excellent and the service is attentive. Had a lovely meal here with a friend on a Saturday night. When I saw all of the authentic dishes on the menu such as Pozole, Molé, and chipotle among others, I had to try it. It did not disappoint. Next time I visit my friend again, we will definitely come back. read more

This was our first time visiting La Catrina's West Haven location, and we have to say we were very impressed! We had loved their food in Milford, and we found it was even more delicious here. We visited during their breakfast hours (Saturday & Sunday 8:30am-3pm), and it's some of the most authentic and tastiest Mexican breakfast in the area. Stand out items were the lachera pancakes, ham and cheese omelette because of how flavorful it was, and the lamb Barbacoa. The drinks were fantastic, from the simple chocolate banana milkshake to cocktails lit on fire! Since we were there close to lunch, we also enjoyed their birria tacos and signature La Catrina meat and shrimp platter, both being delicious as well. Kind and attentive staff, and the murals were stunning on the wall. We will definitely be recommending this spot! read more

I just had lunch at La Catrina at 240 Captain Thomas Blvd. What a wonderful addition to the West Haven dining scene! The servers in this new restaurant were attentive and friendly. What a wonderful experience! You are greeted with a delicious bowl of warm black bean dip and chips. Large menu with plenty of Mexican favorites along with burgers, steaks, chicken and pork chops. Service was impeccable! I had the carnitas taco and it honestly was the best taco I ever tasted and a side of refried beans. My dad and hubs had the el pastor taco dinner and they were very happy. My son had the quesadillas and he was satisfied as well. The staff surprised me with a piece of tres leches cake with a candle and a song. My family swore they did not tell them it was my birthday but they must have overheard us. So nice! I really appreciated that. The cake was amazing! Thank you La Catrina for making my birthday special! read more

La Catrina is a hidden gem nestled in an obscure shopping center located in West Haven beach area. Do not let the appearance of this shopping center deter you!! This place will offer you authentic Mexican cuisine and specials with delicious food, amazing drinks, friendly service, and a festive atmosphere. The menu at La Catrina features a wide variety of traditional Mexican dishes, including tacos, burritos, tostadas and delicious drinks! The food is made with fresh, high-quality ingredients, and the flavors are bold and authentic with generous portions! The service at La Catrina although friendly was a little slow- but we did go on Cinco de mayo and it happen to be the Friday night dinner rush time. However, our server was really sweet and happy to make recommendations but immediately told us that she didn't speak English well. We had no issues in communicating with her although we had to be very attentive in how we ordered- for example we ordered 2 shots of Parton and she misunderstood that as double 2 shots for an order of 4 shots- it was a hilarious mishap avoided. We did try their amazing $6.50 margaritas special - the passion fruit and guava were generous in portion and STRONG the way I like it! We tried their Corn Elote for appetizer, the Camarones Tostadas, and the Pork carnitas tacos (all pictured here) and it was amazing!! This is a great place to enjoy a delicious meal with friends or family if you're looking for a great authentic Mexican restaurant. La Catrina is a great option. The food is delicious, the service is friendly, and the atmosphere is festive. I highly recommend La Catrina. You won't be disappointed!! read more

Fantastic Service Fantastic Food I thought I had great Mexican food until my experience with La Catrina in West Haven I couldn't imagine going anywhere else. The staff are VERY friendly and welcoming. The ambience is truly beautiful with music and laughter filling the dining room. One bite of our Nacho appetizer and I immediately declared it the best nachos I've ever eaten in my life. My wife had a chicken burrito which was brilliant in color and flavor. My birria Tacos made me stop in my tracks and just acknowledge the fantastic galaxy of flavor swirling around my mouth. Sometimes there aren't enough words. words. Like now. Go visit. Although the music is a little loud, the decor, the music, the drinks, and the food are outstanding. But place was empty. I hope that's only because it's Wednesday. Don't let the decor fool you. This restaurant is far from authentic Mexican cuisine. There is nothing fresh served here. I went here on a Friday afternoon hoping for a nice cold Margarita & order of delicious nachos. The Margarita tasted like syrup sugar water & the salsa in the nachos didn't have "any" vegetables in it. Portions were on the small side & the food almost looked like something a child platted. The salsa looked just like Frank's hot sauce; it sure looks like no salsa I ever seen. Too bad. With a little authenticity this restaurant can really pick up business, but it appears the chef & the manager really just don't care. I will never return. read more

Authentic Mexican food at reasonable prices. The food was delicious and the service was great.

The food and service were both quite good. The place was empty although it was a cold and rainy weekday.

I have been here on multiple occasions and it's always a good experience! The food and drinks are consistently great and the service is always amazing. Food was great. I ordered takeout and it was ready right on time. Great service...!!!!!

We came for a to-go order and was pleasantly surprised that they did take home drinks! Our food was delicious and bagged nicely. Ate here last night for the first time and were very happy we did. The staff are very friendly and accommodating, and the ambiance is nice too. Excellent food (we had chicken nachos and a chicken Burrito) at a good price. I will be coming here again

La Catrina is a great addition to the West Haven shoreline. The service was attentive and even though our waiter seemed new, he was competent and friendly. The Mole chicken (pollo) was delicious and the chicken was perfectly cooked. Comfort food for a snowy night. Enchiladas were made with quality ingredients, authentic and all the ingredients seemed to be fresh and very competently prepared. My partner had the steak, and it was tender and flavorful. We appreciated that for the price, they did not cut corners! The prices are very fair for the portions and fresh, homemade quality. I recommend La Catrina for a nice, dinner date or family gathering in a clean, Covid safe environment. read more

I went here 2 times and thought the food was ok the drinks were ok. The price was ridiculously high. I put in an order to go for 4 people all of whom thought it was garbage. Great place!!!! The decor is amazing! The pork-rinds and bean app is not the best (why 4 stars), but they offer it as a good gesture so it comes off thoughtful. The drinks came out STRONG! The server Ana was more that helpful and friendly. Had each one of the tacos, loved every one except lengua. First time trying it and it was just not for me. My SO had the burrito and fries and he said it was good. The drinks were great here! Can't wait to come back for happy hour! Ana informed us it's everyday 3-5 pm :) read more

Great authentic Mexican food! I had some shrimp fajitas which came out sizzling and tasted great. Being from Southern California, I'm a bit spoiled with Mexican food but this was on par with much of what I'm use to back home. The guac and margs are also great! They give quite a large portion of guac. Lastly, the service amazing too! The waitress we had was very friendly and did a great job. I'm excited to go back! read more
