Highly recommend this spot for a quick bite or take out. This spot reminds me of Taco Stand back in California. The medium Carne Asada Fries was the perfect size for me for a meal. I got everything on it, but I think it was missing onions and cilantro. The salsa is on the spicier side, you can always omit it and grab salsa on the side from the self-serve station. I wanted to like this place so bad after all the hype. Let's start with the food. I ordered the carne asada and al pastor tacos. Let me just say. Food was cold. No heat whatsoever to them. The asada was beyond salty. Couldn't eat the food. The Al pastor was mid. Not much flavor to the meat. My favorite was the tortillas, hand made. The food lacked flavor. I am not sure why they are this packed. I also ordered a Jamaica which was all sugar no hibiscus. I'll have to try em again soon. But save your time and money. read more

Dare I say the BEST tacos in town!? I've tried many of the Phoenix area taco establishments and this place was jaw dropping. The staff welcome you in as you enter the door, the interior is sparkling clean, the food will knock your socks off!!! The homemade flour and corn tortillas are the perfect pairing to the freshly prepared in front of you meats, con todo style to get the full explosion of flavor is a must! The salsa bar is stocked with 4 flavorful salsas of varying heat to enjoy with chips or on your entrees, but I might argue you don't need any extras on the food. The chips and queso was also incredible, blanco style with chiles, I'm drooling! Once Taco Viva opened, I had about two friends recommend coming here within a two day span so I stopped by when I was nearby. Everyone was raving about their Al Pastor and I will say unequivocally. They have the best Pastor store in Phoenix. I would say that the other options are great, but if going for the first time, I wouldn't mess with anything other than that. The parking situation there is relatively similar to most restaurants in Phoenix where it's limited, but it might be good to plan in advance where you'll park. Inside there's enough seating for large or small groups. There's even room for standing up and eating at the countertop. Once your food is ordered, their crew will assemble all the toppings if you so choose. It's similar to chipotle but by no means is this place anything like chipotle. read more

It was a Sunday afternoon when my husband decided we should host a handful of friends at our house after a pickleball tournament in Mesa. I was driving home when I saw the text and decided we needed food in the house to feed our company. I quickly looked up Taco Viva's menu (as I'd been wanting to check TV out for awhile) and decided that their Paquete Familiar (Family Pack) option was the way to go. Each family pack includes "your choice of protein (1 lb), 15 housemade fresh tortillas and "con todo" toppings on the side." I went with one family pack with chicken (pollo) and one with steak (asada). They also offer a pork (pastor) option as well as mushroom (hongos). I'd be down to try those next time too... These worked out perfectly and I was pleased with how quickly they were ready as well. I was also impressed with the cleanliness of the restaurant, all of the fun signage, merch, etc... As others have said, it almost looks like a chain because of how professional everything looks, but it's a local business that has clearly put a ton of thought and effort into everything they do. From the moment I walked in, Taco Viva brought back memories of Tacos El Gordo. If you've been to Las Vegas or San Diego, you'll know what I mean. From the color scheme to the prep area, the two businesses seem quite similar. Thankfully, the line at Taco Viva moves much faster. The employees work quickly and there's plenty of seating available. When the weather's nice, step onto their patio. The food was amazing! While the Carne Asada was slightly dry, everything else made up for it. The Al Pastor is a "must try", so please don't pass up on it! With good food comes a price. I checked the menu (posted in pics here) before heading over, but the prices have increased. It's hard to pick a favorite, but as a big fan of pastor, that one was my top choice. The Especiales Gabacho was a bit too heavy on the cheese for my taste, but for cheese lovers, it would probably be a dream come true. The Tostada Pastor, however, was so good that I might even prefer it over the tacos. The guacamole had a bit too much garlic powder for my liking, but the Carlota de Limón was a real treat--like a cross between key lime pie and banana pudding.
