Folks that grew up in Auburn, and attended Placer High School, straight across the street from this establishment, seem to love Taco Tree. My only explanation is that the open campus lunch hour afforded them the opportunity to become hooked on the stuff before their taste buds developed. There is authentic Mexican food, there is gringo Mexican food, there is school cafeteria Mexican food, and then there is the bland, tasteless meals that passed as Mexican food in your grandmother's home (amusing your grandmother was neither Mexican nor an interested cook.) Taco Tree is a mixture of the latter two. It makes Taco Bell seem spicy, and Del Taco appear appealing. It's only grace, well, it is cheap. So if you pine for that burrito the lunch lady served up in 2nd grade, or Grandma's Velveeta cheese, bean and tortilla enchilada, head over to Taco Tree. You certainly won't be alone. When I was in high school, my best friends and I used to eat here for lunch every day. Why? It's delicious, it's cheap, and it's right next to the school. Now that I'm all growed up and have left Auburn, I still think about Taco Tree. And every time I go back for a visit, I make sure to stop there. Why, just yesterday I went in with my boyfriend and one of my best buddies from high school, and I gorged myself on four (FOUR) tacos. I can't usually eat that much, but for a Taco Tree taco, I'll do it. And I'll groan in ecstasy the whole time. I'll be honest. I absolutely HATE cheese nacho sauce. I'll be honest again. I actually kind of enjoyed Taco Tree's nachos with that interesting flavor nacho cheese sauce. Dearest reader, Verily, you may hear that this is standard fare for the high school "chirrens" that come through on a lunch break or any V8 left-foot-of-voltron lifted monster truck who wishes to partake in Hill-person Calimex by going through their minuscule drive thru. There is definitely much more character to this small place much to Martin S's chagrin, to be sure! I have always passed this place on the way to get drubbed by Placer High's tennis team. On the way in to their veritable chopping block, I noticed this little place on the way in, and was always curious about their Tacos. 10 Years later, while attending a pleasant orchestra recital at their high school theater (Handel's Messiah sing along), I stopped in at this little blast from the past. The first thing you'll try to do is look for the menu. The second thing you'll notice is that the menu is insanely small by modern standards. But what is important is the flavor, which is what I am going to comment on next! Hold your horses! First a little caveat: I don't really like Mexican food of any persuasion to include Tex and Cali. It is never my first choice (like how I prefer powdered donut holes to mowing the lawn, or Road Dawg over Triple H in the Degeneration X stable) however I was drawn to it like a moth to a flame, a Gary Coleman to a Bus Lady. I was compelled to explore for sake of you, fair reader! I had two completely plain tacos and a water cup. Nothing on it but the beef. No joke. I must say that I enjoyed it! Ok.. I am born and raised in San Diego which if you have never looked at a map, is 5 mins away from Mexico. So good mexican food is something I know well. I know this isn't real mexican food, but its super bomb. Better than taco bell or del taco. The Super Buritto (no onion) and The Soft Taco Plus are the bomb (or as in nor cal, they say hella bomb). My girlfriend being from Auburn and eating Taco Tree religiously before moving to San Diego rants and raves about this place, and before I went I didn't know why. The staff is made up of a lot of young people and the drive thru is always 5 deep atleast. If I lived in Auburn, I would be here atleast three times a week. Last time I was there they had new (and better) corn tortillas. Food is cheap also. $20 could feed four people! Hot sauce is good too! They take debit, but not credit BTW!! read more

Just like Mother used to make - really basic but filling. I sometimes get a craving for a simple beef taco like I would make at home and that is exactly what you get here - if you get the soft corn tortilla with ground beef taco with just lettuce and tomato and cheese. I combine this with the beef burrito and a Pepsi and it is one of my favorite lunch on the run combos. I agree it is not "true Mexican" (very mild spices) but it is what I grew up on and so is comfort food. read more

When I was vegetarian I absolutely loved taco tree. I would stop by every time I was in or driving through Auburn to order the veggie burrito (at some ridiculously cheap price - maybe $1.75, I think) and the cheesey nachos. Yum! I have been back once since I've become vegan and it has definitely lost its coolness. I can now only order a veggie burrito with no cheese and no sour cream, which is just a tortilla with beans, olives and lettuce. Can we at least get some avocado, please? Taco tree is an affordable, family owned fast food (American-)Mexican restaurant. If you're driving through Auburn, give it a chance. It deserves good business, but they are not as vegan-friendly as I'd like. read more

Mmmm, Taco Tree. I miss this place like crazy when I'm living in Food Exile (aka Rexburg, Idaho). The people who work here are rather surly and the building is somewhat rundown, but in a weird way, that adds to its charm. I've been to the other Taco Tree up the highway, and it loses some of its splendor when the food is served to you in a non-dilapidated building by someone who looks like they don't entirely hate their life. It sounds like I'm kidding, and I kind of am, but not really. Their food is particularly perfect when you're having one of those weird late-night cravings where you want something to eat and the only thing you can think of that's open is Taco Bell or a 24-hour McDonalds. The next time one of those urges hits, go to Taco Tree and relish in its glory. Make sure to ask for "lots" of mild sauce and positively DROWN your meal in said sauce. It makes the culinary experience (and it will be an experience, trust me) that much better. read more

This place was one of my favorite places to eat in high school. It's good most of the time, and it's like taco bell but cheaper(you get way more food for the price) and i've eated their veggie burritos many times, and used to get their super nachos on my way to work in the morning(really healthy i know!) but i have to say i'm not a fan of their breakfast burritos. the atmosphere here sucks, and the tables are all mismatched(at least last time i went in there about a year ago) but the food is pretty good and very nicely priced. just don't go between 12-1, as it is bombarded by high schoolers. read more

I'm not a fan of fast food. In fact, if I am in Auburn, and I am grabbing a quick bite I choose In N Out or Taco Tree. I have long loved Taco Tree, as I was raised just down the street. I love their super nachos with no meat. If you order them Swamp Style, they will put the chips on the side so they don't get soggy! I also am a long time fan of their bean burritos with extra red sauce and extra cheese. They also have the best Pepsi in town.... strange, I know. I am glad I found the Taco Tree! I did not grow up in Auburn, so I do not have a "hometown bias" for it. That being said...it is always fresh and always affordable. I try to get by here at least once every other week to grab a couple of Super Tacos w/o tomatoes and a bean burrito with sour cream. Oh yeah, get the "hot" taco sauce...I normally do not like my food too spicy, but this stuff really makes the super tacos and the bean burritos tasty, not to say they are not tasty without it, this just makes it that much better. read more

Went here tonight with my family. My husband works near by and wanted me to try it. He said it reminded him of this place in Seattle called "taco time" that I love. Taco Tree is the McDonald's of Auburn. The tacos, burritos, nachos are made exactly the same way every time...excellent! The food definitely tastes waaaaaay better than the other mentioned fast food giant. If you go to a restaurant and a good portion of the employees have worked there for between 5-20+ years then you need to eat there. Owner Rob is friendly and so are all of his staff. The nachos reminded me of the kind you get at the movie theater with the neon orange "cheese" and the burrito had canned refried beans and too much shredded lettuce. Also.. did every parking spot need a sign to alert drivers that there was a pole behind them? You've got at least 15 feet to back up before hitting the pole. The line of cars for this place was down the street, so I (not knowing any food places is Auburn) thought they might be on to something. But no such luck, this place is possibly even less authentic than its more generic fast food brothers.
