What's better than enjoying one of your favorite cuisines?  Having two favorites interpreted in a new fusion.  That's what we found at Taco Ssam when we stopped in to try and mix of tacos.  For this quick visit, we focused on several Korean specialty tacos, including the bulgogi, gal bi, pork belly and pastor.  The pork belly was the favorite. We would have ordered more but we have to admit that we happily munched on so many warm chips and salsa that we didn't have any more room.  The space is decorated with fun murals and odes to Dia de los Muertos themes.  It is colorful and bright. Starting with a confused theme: Mexican/Korean/Whiskey bar. The decor is all mexican inspired. The food is a mix of mexican and korean. I dont understand how whiskey ties in...... We got a pretty good spread of food across the menu and it was wall all horrible - even the rice and beans that came with the amazingly overly spicy enchiladas were probably the worst rice and refried beans I've had in my entire life. Taco Ssam is a fun fusion of a restaurant featuring Korean-Mexican food. It was taco tuesday and you know I just had to get my fix of tacos for the day so I went all in. The atmosphere here was very trendy and I'd say I'm sure it attracts a lot of people to come in for happy hour or at least for a taste of both worlds. It was also happy hour so with the server, they recommended me modelo to drink since it was half off drinks until 8 and I couldn't say no to that! I ended up getting Carne Asada, Al Pastor, Bulgogi, Porky Belly, and Pollo Asado for my tacos. I was so happy when they came out as I waited almost all day to dive into delicious tacos! Overall each tacos were made fresh, I don't really have much of a compliant because the food was just that good! I only wish I could get a Birria Taco to sample but you'd need to order three. I've been coming here for years and have never left disappointed. The staff are always friendly and take the time to speak with you, even when they're running around busy. Served with a side of rice, onion, cilantro and lime wedges and four tortillas, this is more than a meal and could easily be split between two people. So I dug in and savored every bite, plenty of refills on my drink from my friendly server, and listening to the music and watching the soccer games on the television with one eye. Yes, it took me longer to finish my dish than everyone else in my group who got tacos. Yes, my fingers were covered in seafood broth and there were bits of shells all over the place. But it was 100% worth it. The best way to enjoy the Sopa de Marisco is to fast beforehand so you have enough space in your belly for the whole thing! Definitely trying it again next time. I came here with a few people, and all of us were disappointed with our dishes. Tacos are just ok. I got the taco enchilada, and shared the carne asada fries and chicken quesadilla. The texture of the tortilla in the enchilada was not good. It felt steamed. It was also flavorless. The only thing that saved it was the hot sauce I poured all over it. The fries while sounded good on the menu could've been executed better. It needed more cheese, and perhaps some scallions and cilantro. The chicken quesadilla wasn't bad. Also ok. I strictly came to this place for their Birria tacos as I heard great thinks. I honestly enjoyed the taste of them and thought they were well cooked, seasoned, and flavorful. They were crunchy throughout. Much to my surprise, they offer goat Birria as their special, which is traditionally how this Mexican dish is made. However I was disappointed when my dish didn't come with consomé to dip my tacos in. Instead it comes with beans and rice. The menu also offers beef Birria that actually comes with a dipping consomé. I have visited the Taco Ssam location in the Culmore Shopping Center several times; so I was delighted to find this new location even closer to my house. The food and ambiance are awesome. They are becoming popular fast; so I am glad they have a much larger seating area than their other location. I enjoyed the classic margarita and the tacos I ordered. My husband always enjoys their burritos. We love the fusion of Asian and Mexican flavors. The dumplings are delicious. My favorite tacos are Carne Asada, Barbacoa and Al Pastor; but I also enjoy the Bulgogi and Gal-Bee tacos. The full bar has a large selection and the artwork on the walls makes from a great atmosphere. This location is another great addition to this ever expanding shopping complex. For fusion tacos, Taco Ssam is pretty decent. If you're looking for authentic street tacos though, skip this. My partner and I tried two Korean tacos, the bulgogi and kalbi, and were impressed with how flavorful and juicy they were. I definitely liked the bulgogi more, as the kalbi was harder to bite cleanly into and the toppings spilled out more. We also ordered the pastor, carne asada, and spicy shrimp tacos off the Mexican taco menu, which were fine but nothing outstanding. I typically prefer my corn tortillas doubled, but they only gave one tortilla per taco, which was too soft and not grilled enough for my taste. I also wish the pastor had more/larger pineapple bits. My partner also ordered a horchata, which was far too milky - if you're lactose intolerant, beware! While the Korean tacos were good, the Mexican tacos were a bit of a letdown, so I'll stick to my usual taco spot. I'm glad I tried it since I saw it on IG a while back, but since I don't typically crave fusion tacos, I'm not sure I'll be back anytime soon. read more
