I can't rightly comment on the food at Sarita's Mexican Restaurant as I didn't have any. Let me explain. I arrived at the restaurant about 6:30 pm on Thursday. I was the only diner there. (Odd, I thought.) I ordered two soft-shell tacos and a Long Island Iced Tea from the well-stocked bar. When it arrived it was iced tea only. I took it to the dour bartender to explain the mistake. He asked me for age identification -- I am 77 years old. When I produced it, the bartender said it didn't matter because he wouldn't serve me any alcohol. Why? Because I am in a wheelchair! I am an amputee and paralyzed from the waist down. I had driven about 2.5 miles from home alone in my power wheelchair. When the bartender refused to serve me I immediately departed so I didn't taste the tacos that I had ordered. I've never been told before that a wheelchair disqualifies me from enjoying a cocktail before dinner. Somehow I am disgruntled by being treated like this. read more

Lady wrote the tip on the receipt, and I didn't give her a tip since the menu was high priced as it is and I go to the bathroom and the waitress waited until I left the bathroom to say "you forgot the tip". The service was attentive but the language barrier was a problem. Pointing helped :) The food came quickly, so it was served hot. But for flavor, eh... Not impressed. I had the pasta with shrimp. I guess it was my fault for ordering that kind of entree in an el salvadorian/Mexican restaurant. The noodles were over- cooked and had way more sauce than could accommodate noodles. So it was rather soupy. My husband ordered the chicken breast which was a safe order. He was satisfied with it but didn't know what to make of the tortillas that came with his meal. Just ordered from here for cinco de Mayo OMG soooooo good. I usually order from el tio but bc it was busy I tried Sarita's instead. I ordered the enchiladas, tamales, and tacos and literally tasted home made not like el tio where it tastes like it's from a box. I also got the horchata, tamarindo, fruits de ensalada drink sooo good and my kids actually ate all the dinner. This will be my new spot! Wife, daughter and I stopped in last Saturday night. All of our meals were good and the service was attentive and pleasant. It was not very busy, but that's okay. There were two other tables and some folks at the bar. Honestly, we were happy to find a place that didn't have a wait. I have read some reviews about them adding tips and being expensive. I will say that our meal was slightly higher in price than I thought it would be. I did not check the receipt to see if a tip was added, but I did add a tip of my own. Sometimes, lately, I've noticed restaurants are automatically adding a tip and then having a line for additional gratuity. I feel like that's a sneaky way to operate. I have gotten trapped giving a proper tip after restaurants have already tipped themselves. I don't return to those places. I'm not sure if they did that here, but like I said, our bill was a bit higher than expected so they may have. Since I can't be sure, I'll leave this review at 4 stars since the food was good and service was also nice and attentive. Their wine and beer options are limited. Typical American style and Mexican beers. Nothing special. They have a generic red and white wine. Don't know what they are. The menu just says red and white. Also, we felt they were bit pricy per glass. For all we knew we were being served Francia at $9.95/glass. read more

Not sure why Sarita's is listed as a Mexican restaurant when the owner is Salvadorian, the food is Salvadorian and the customers are Salvadorian. We've had Salvadorian food before and while we know it is not as spicy as some other Latin food, like Mexican, but can still be quite good. Unfortunately, the overall experience at Sarita's was disappointing and we will not go back. The plastic tablecloths and the dingy furniture, walls and floors were an immediate turnoff. The service was pleasant, but clearly serving English-speaking clientele is not the restaurant's priority. Our waitress was sweet, but clueless and definitely inattentive. Food was mediocre both in taste and presentation. The bottomless chips and the salsa were tasteless. We had to mix it with the tobasco sauce on the table to give it some flavor. The nacho plate we ordered was a slopyy, soggy mess (check photos on our blog). The chicken tortillas were also blah to say the least. Mushy meat and soft tortillas (plain pupusas) left a lot to be desired. The chicken stew was barely at all a stew (check photo on our blog). Again, tobasco sauce to the rescue. If Sarita's offered a better dining experience the prices, which are rather average to an ethnic dive, would not have been so insulting. This is another place that I really want to like, but our experiences have been too bad. We had been to the original Sarita's in Falls Church way back when, and back then the place was hopping with Spanish-speaking clientele to such an extent that it was hard to get seated. In fact, my wife and I, as the only Anglos in the place, drew stares. So we figured the food must be good, but the atmosphere wasn't (because of the crowds, nothing against the clientele). Anyway, fast forward to the Sarita's that has relocated to Graham Rd, and you get an upscale version that is just WAY too expensive for what they're serving. I don't fault them for not having a kid's menu, but there wasn't much that was kid-friendly (you know, in which the food is distinct and isolated, not touching anything else, and ideally is served with ketchup). We went early to avoid the stares of the Spanish-speaking clientele, but it turned out that we had lunch and departed before anyone else entered the restaurant. Does ANYONE eat here? The prices are crazy expensive. Cokes come in a can, so you know you're not going to get a free refill. If memory serves, the cans were at least $2 and maybe $2.50. Entrees were also way, way expensive, and this was at lunch. For two adults and two kids, we ended up spending nearly $45, and we certainly weren't full when we left. A word on the wait staff. As J. W. mentioned, they don't seem to speak English, nor do they have a designated English-speaker to handle the few Anglos that venture in. No problem, I switched to Spanish (having spent two years in a Spanish-speaking country and ordered in Spanish in restaurants scores of times). Even that wasn't very successful. I might be a little generous giving two stars, but I'm new to Yelp and I guess I'm not yet ready to lose my one star virginity. Let's call it 1.5 stars. In fairness, what we got did taste pretty good, but I could not believe how tiny the portions were. My ex and I both got burritos and they were literally about the size of the palm of my hand and came with a small side of rice and refried beans. As someone else mentioned, they only have cans of soda and they're $2.50 each. To add insult to injury, they only had caffeine free diet coke. I didn't think anyone other than my parents drank that stuff. We ended up spending $30 (including tip) for two miniscule burritos and two cans of diet coke. In the middle of running Sunday errands, I stopped in for lunch. The restaurant was mostly empty, but featured a large stage and was packed to the gills with chairs/tables, so I think it must have a pretty popular live music scene. I wanted steak nachos, but the waitress helpfully informed me they weren't on the menu. So I ordered chicken nachos, which also weren't on the menu except for a picture. The food at Sarita's is thoroughly mediocre and overpriced for what you get. The Cornish hen was dry and tough, yet probably not the best choice at a Mexican/Salvadorian restaurant. The accompanying rice and salad were both quite good. The carne guisada came with a few huge chunks of beef and potatoes, but neither were tender as you'd expect from a slow-cooked stew; the gravy wasn't very thick either. Fried plantains were excellent, though I wasn't sure what to do with the sour cream and refried beans that were served with it. Luckily, one of the two waitresses spoke English very well. They charge for water, so stick with the Corona or Modelo. Popular tropical music videos were projected on the wall, keeping the dining area loud even though the place was empty. The single rose in a tall vase and white table cloth seemed over the top. You'd be better off eating at Chili's. read more

I wish I would have checked the Yelp reviews before I stepped in this restaurant. For a party of two at the prime dinner time of 7pm, we are the only two diners in the restaurant. It looked like it is a 'self-served' service when in fact the waitress did not even bother staring at the TV. She absolutely had no idea what to do when I said 'a table for two' three times. The other two bartenders did not bother to greet the customers at all. The whole atmosphere was just 'not right' for us. To be fair- The quality of food here was fairly decent; however I've dined at many other Mexican/Salvadorian restaurants in the neighborhood, and I think it can hardly compete with its competitors for their good food and, more importantly, the top-notched customer service. As we were curious about the daily dynamic of the restaurant, I asked the waitress (who, again, would rather spend time on her phone or watching TV while at work) about why it was so quiet. She appeared a bit defensive and said 'we are mostly doing business on the weekends'. I pondered, 'then why bothered to keep the restaurant open on the weekdays if you just care about the customers on the weekends?'. It really showed how little did they know about running a restaurant nor did they care about the current status of the business. Going to an empty restaurant during the prime dinner time tells customers a troubling fact -- either they do not know how goes wrong; or they do not care even if it goes wrong. Despite its long history in the neighborhood, I expect that if they do not improve their customer service and are resistant to changes for feedback, it is not going to be here any longer soon. read more

Disappointing. Overpriced food honestly. $16 for 3 tacos..over $23 for 3 tacos and 2 sodas. If they were good I probably wouldn't be complaining as much but I can go to a taco truck and for 10 bucks I can get that and better. And when asked to get the bill they bring us one for a table of 3. When asked if they can charge us separate they made it seem like they couldn't. When they finally did they added tip to it as well. This restaurant is a total disappointment. Not being familiar with Salvadorian food, we decided to go there for the Mexican dishes. What Sarita's offered under the heading of Mexican was marginal (and that is being kind). The soft tacos had the consistency of Wonder Bread and fell apart. The burrito platter was pedestrian at best. On the plus side the pupusa with pork was excellent. The wait staff had a difficult time understanding our orders and when I asked for a slice of lemon for my water, I got a Miller Lite. Add vendors strolling through the restaurant hawking their wares, and it made for a less than enjoyable dining experience. You can get a better Mexican meal at Tippy's Taco House or Taco Bell. read more

This place is terrible and very disappointing. It's expensive and has very few redeeming qualities. If you're in the mood for Mexican food, find a different place. The food was bland and expensive. While the complimentary chips were decent, the salsa was watery and had little flavor. I had the chicken fajita lunch special. The tortillas were too small and too thick. They had the consistency of naan rather than a real tortilla. The chicken was poorly seasoned. The rice was greasy and flavorless. The re-fried beans were unmemorable. Sarita's is Salvadorean not Mexican but good. They have the best pupusas in the Falls Church area. You have to go to Arlington to get better. The atmosphere is typical of a Salvadorean restaurant. My husband and I go to Sarita's on a very regular basis, almost every week. Their food is great, their staff understands english, and is very well dressed, unlike some other restaurants we've been to... I think it says a lot about the restaurant and owners if the flowers on the tables are real, and fresh every day!!!!! I love Sarita's and will keep going there for as long as they are open... Now they're starting to do an event every night of the week, my husband and I have been out there to go dance... Just an FYI for those who are confused: tortillas are made differently in most Latin American countries (not all Latin Americans eat tortillas as a staple). Salvadoran tortillas are generally made from corn flour and are smaller and thicker than Mexican tortillas. Also, in general, Salvadoran food is not spicy, so you should expect it to be blander than Mexican. Sarita's has great Salvadoran food. read more
