Can I give like 7 stars for this place please?! I had to go two days in a row because I was craving it the whole day. Their tacos are LEGIT. They recently combined with Sao Paolo next door so if you go into either entrance, you can get Taco Joint tacos. They have really fun hot sauces to try out as well. My favorite was avocado and habanero. Both are super spicy. They also have a full bar, where they sell coffee in the morning as well. I got a glass bottle coke and it was a bit expensive (about $3). I ordered a chorizo taco because that's the first thing I smelled coming through the door, and also a potato egg and cheese. The chick taking my order was super nice and speedy. Got my food so fast on a Thursday morning that I didn't have time to put sugar in my coffee. Tacos were stuffed with eggs. They will probably be a little dry if you don't add the red or green salsa (both really fresh), but then you've got to ask yourself why the heck aren't you adding salsa, freak? And you can tell their doing raw tortillas on the flat top, they're not thick like off-the-shelf crap, crisp without being dry. After waiting 20 minutes for a to-go order of tamales at 3pm and with nobody else waiting for food at this point, I asked how much longer until my food was out and was told by the condescending guy (grey shirt, blk hat, facial hair) taking orders that this isn't fast food and they're not a McDonald's. But honestly, if McDonald's had tamales, I'd go there over here any time bc their customer service is shockingly better. Total wait for 4 tamales: 35 minutes. I'd hate to know how long it takes during their peak hours. Tamales looked like they'd had a rough life. Oh and just a tip, they refuse to do easy ice in their ice coffee and when I asked why (bc I don't like tons of ice), he said "I don't make the rules..." Definitely a local favorite. Place was packed with students from UT. I was surprised they were still asking people to wear masks when masks aren't mandatory anymore. Found it odd. It's walking distance if you feel like walking a bit and it has a couple of parking spots in the front if you want to drive. There are usually a lot of people here during lunch - you will have to wait in line to order and it may be difficult to find a table - which is a testament to how good the food is. The signage outside is pretty unclear and it kinda looks like a different restaurant, but if there are a lot of hungry students there, you'll know you're at the right place. All of the tacos I've tried have been so good! I would highly recommend the Bacon & egg tacos, Fish tacos (both seared and fried), and Street tacos. The value is really good and the tacos are pretty big. The tortillas are really nice and soft and I would also recommend trying their sauces (but be careful if you can't handle spice like me). Everything always tastes fresh and is juicy! I have not been here since the pandemic started but here's how it works: you walk in and get in line to order at the front, then you get a number on your receipt and wait until they call your number from the kitchen near the left side. How it works: You place your order at the counter after entering through the Sao Paolos door. On your receipt, you'll be issued a number. In all my 3.5 years in college, I never knew about this place until now! So the way this place is set up is a bit odd since you order through the same entrance as Sao Paulo then you walk through this hallway to your right to the other side where the kitchen and seating are. The service is fairly fast and most of the tacos are decently priced ($3ish). I ordered the potato, egg and cheese taco on wheat. It's nice that you have the option of flour, corn or wheat tortillas. They definitely give you a fairly large taco for the price you pay so I think it's worth it. They do serve breakfast tacos all day as well. The seating area is a bit small and it can get crowded in the mornings but there is additional seating outdoors. They offer a variety of sauces to add to your meal as well. Best taco place near campus hands down. It took me awhile for this place to grow on me, but I'm a huge fan now. I highly recommend coming here for breakfast, grabbing some of their potato and egg tacos (their potatoes are amazing) and their bacon and egg tacos as well. Their tortillas are amazing, and their sauces are even better. Food: Outside of breakfast, I recommend getting the fish taco here and topping it off with some of their green taco sauce, it's one of my favorite tacos here. Make sure to grab some of their chipotle sauce as well-- it seriously takes the entire experience to whole other level. They're all priced fairly, so expect to pay about $7-10 here for 2-3 AMAZING tacos. Seriously one of my favorite Austin spots. Service: Nice staff, and they always are stocked up on sauces-- which is all self serve. Great restaurant! I have heard so many things about Taco Joint from graduate students and other engineers before I finally decided to try it. The entrance is confusing- they have multiple doors and it connects with its sister restaurant (which is a Brazilian restaurant), and the lighting is pretty dim, but the food is amazing. I ordered two potato, egg, and cheese tacos. They're relatively cheap and small, so I'd recommend getting more than one. I'll definitely be back here to try more of their tacos!! read more

A good spot for big ol' tacos! It was our daughter's birthday and she wanted tacos for lunch, so she found this joint herself on Yelp (I know, I know, we've raised her well!!). The family ordered a variety of things from the menu: El Porko tacos, Pastoritos, a bean and cheese taco, a Street Taco, La Ahogada torta, a side of rice and beans, and drinks-- add extra salsa please (.50 for each extra salsa). I thought the .50 charge for each salsa was a bit much, especially considering the size of them; but hey, the salsa [verde] is good. Most of the tacos we had were good. The Pastorito was a tad greasy, but good. El Porko was definitely the standout and my favorite-- great flavors and the pork was tender. I didn't finish my Street Taco however-- the meat was a bit chewy and the flavors were conflicting. The Ahogada torta was huge! The flavors were good and the tomato sauce it's literally "drowned" in, is spicy. The bean and cheese taco and refried beans and rice were standard. As far as tacos go in Austin, this place is hard to beat. I had to seared fish and the fried fish Tacos. While both were great, my preference was the fried fish. Tortillas were nicely done. Choice of Salsas if you want to get creative. I also had the queso which had some mild kick to it. The chips were phenomenal. This place is a counter-service establishment.
