The first thought that goes through your head is "When the fuck are we going to Taco J?" The second thought is "Where the fuck is my wallet?" Once that little internal monologue is over you begin to dream of flat tortillas submerged beneath pounds of eggs, cojita cheese and bacon. Then your tongue pricks at the thought of the habanero salsa taking over your tastebuds like Lucifer made his own little hell on your tongue. Ah, the best kind of spice. Lest we forget the atmosphere that calls to you like a taco Mecca? You walk into a restaurant that, quite honestly, I'm not sure if its related to Taco J or not. You pull a Topo Chico or a Mexican Coke from the fridge, order your 2-4 tacos with the lady at the front and then you enter the promised land. Its like a school cafeteria down-sized for a family 30 with 2 square feet per person. Cozy, you tell yourself as the claustrophobia sets in. The woman behind the counter is screaming number with a thick accent as hungover beasts drool from their chomps. The young girl fills the sauce bottles like her whole life depends on it because everybody knows the second the chipotle sauce is gone, the day is ruined right there. Boom. All the while, men in t-shirts scramble so many eggs that you start to believe the eggs must have come first at this point. Once your number is called, the heavens open above your head and your Friday is ready. In that little booth with glossy wood and no room, you melt into your taco. You almost ask it to marry you. Ring before spring type shit. When its over, you feel like you need the whole Austin Fire Department to tend to your mouth. You feel mournful of that taco. You feel almost...changed. This is my go to breakfast taco place! I've spent so many Saturdays here after our swim & weights practice with my team. The tortillas here are BOMB. Also love the sauces esp the avocado & chipotle ones. My fav is el gringo. The migas is also super tasty but the large amount of onions leaves a less than ideal after taste. I'm extremely confused as to why this place was so packed- must be a college student hot spot for the social scene. But we went for breakfast tacos and were so disappointed. My review has nothing to do with the staff or the service I just honestly thought the tacos were that bad. All I got was chorizo and egg- very simple. But it was pretty bad. No flavor, tortillas were hard, eggs were all chunky and separated from chorizo (which there wasn't much of) and the salsa didn't help much. The tacos I saw with cheese had what looked like cold hard shredded cheddar thrown on top, not melted a lick. Definitely wouldn't return here, there are way too many bomb taco spots. Taco Joint is a UT must, a great vegetarian friendly place to get your taco fix. I mainly recommend the breakfast tacos, specifically the Migas! My main problem usually with breakfast tacos are that the eggs are extremely boring and tasteless, but these were really yummy and added great flavor to the Migas. I also had the potato, bean, and cheese. The best part was definitely the flour tortilla, it had crispy edges and a soft inside holding the taco. For sauce, the avocado sauce was my favorite, it's basically a creamier salsa verde. Overall, good, fast, and relatively cheap brunch/lunch option. read more

Get yourself the Oaxacan style Tamales. I haven't found them in many places besides here but they do it well and for a very good price. I'm on good information though that sometimes they just don't want to heat them up even though they've been made. Had to argue with the girl and get the manager to tell them to make it. When I heard 5 years ago there this was a place which had homemade tortillas, and that too next to campus, I was over the moon. Usually a taqueria that makes its own tortillas does not screw up the taco. Now if you've never had good tacos, I can understand the appeal - it's freshly prepared, there is a certain something to like about the place, like their salsas which are fresh and cover up the mistakes of the tacos, and I really wouldn't fault anyone for coming here on a really busy day from campus. However, the number of times I've come here only to be disappointed, makes the case for not coming here at all, since I see no visible improvement. Starting with the tortillas, bonus points for making your own, but there are times wen the tortillas were dry, and they didn't have any flavor that would instantly tell you it's homemade, but they are well toasted and hot when they arrive, so bonus points for that. The 420 always was recommended to me, but it's inexplicable lack of flavor was disappointing. I've had had success, though inconsistent, with the steak and egg breakfast taco and the chicken mole, which is on-point with its sweet mole sauce. After multiple visits over 10 years, I really can't say I would come here unless it's on a busy day at UT, and if you are in Hyde Park, there is a much better option in Vaquero, further up on Duval. read more

BEST TACOS OF ALL TIME! Okay I have had their breakfast tacos, fish tacos, and their beef and chicken tacos, and I have not been disappointed by any of it. What I usually do is get the street taco and the 420, drench them both in the green and orange sauce (sorry for not knowing the names off the top of my head), and just stuff them down my throat. They are very filling, but sometimes when I'm with a friend, we share the chips and queso. The chips are deep fried and delicious, but if you're on a diet, it's not for you. The queso is okay, but I look to put the orange sauce in it (sorry again for no names) and it makes it kind of sweet and spicy. All-in-all, this place ruined tacos for me because now I can never appreciate any other tacos since these are the best. read more

Taco Joint is an institution. Their food is fresh and delicious, and the staff is always friendly. They've been a favorite for a long time (I even used to coordinate a large weekly organizational order, which was a perennial hit.) I'm giving them three stars because I've been really disappointed in their safety precautions during the COVID-19 shutdown. Even if you order online, there's no curbside pick-up option (as there used to be). They have a sign posted saying that masks are required for entry, but the last two times I've been, other customers have been waiting in the same (inside) line mask-free. And there's seating for those who are waiting right by the door, so you inevitably have to walk through a huddle of maskless folks to pick up your order. Finally, the super friendly person working the cash register today (who also hands out food) was wearing a mask that was so loose that it didn't even cover her nose. I'm really looking forward to either (1) Taco Joint getting a better handle on its procedures; or (2) us beating COVID-19 and leaving this whole thing in the dust. When that happens, Taco Joint will be back to 5+ stars in my book. But I really don't feel great going there right now. read more

Taco Joint is a good taco spot, overall I'd rate a 3.5 star, but I think the current Yelp rating of 4.5 is pretty generous. I'd say this place was about on par with many of the taco spots around Austin but with a little bit more of authenticity to the food. This location near the university was, not surprisingly, filled with UT students.The line wasn't too that long when we arrived but it seemed to move very slowly. Maybe it's just me but the Yelp pictures make the tacos look very large. We each got one taco and split a third, I was still a little hungry, wish we would have gotten two each. I got the seared fish and split the barbacoa. I tried a few of their different salsa options, which were all good. The seared fish taco was good but it felt like it was a little heavy on the cabbage slaw, it kind of "took over" the taco. Gary's Playbook to eating at Taco Joint. Don't stress if the line is out the door (the place is small and the line will move quickly). Expect to wait at least 20 minutes for your order. Remember, good quality food comes with a little patience. If you're wondering how many tacos to order, the magic number is two. Order one if you're not hungry, and anything past two is overkill since their tacos are filling. Fried Fish Taco and Street Taco all the way. If it's a Saturday, then it'll be the Fried Fish Taco and the Benedicto on Steak. Once your order number is called out, go get your tacos and some sauces. Do not immediately pour the sauces onto your tacos. I repeat, DO NOT immediately pour the sauces onto your tacos. First, look at the taco. Second, take a whiff of the taco. Once you've taken in the majestic view of the taco, then you have permission to take a bite or put some sauce on the taco. Don't over sauce the thing because you'll lose the flavor. Using your index/middle fingers, and thumb, lift up the taco at the tip and eat. Chew slowly to take in the delicious flavor one bite at a time. Occasionally take a bite and look away at a distance to ponder about life. Look at your surroundings: the people next to you, the staff working, the long list of receipts that are printed out next to the sauces. There is nothing wrong with alternating between tacos. Once you've finished your tacos, lean back in your chair, and take a deep breath. Stay in your chair for another 1-2 minutes. Pick up your trash, briefly clean the table, and get up. Place the trash in the trash can, and the plastic baskets on top. As you head out the door, take a quick glance back at the restaurant and then leave. After hearing my friend rave about Taco Join a-gajillion times, I finally tried Taco Joint after visiting Austin for the 10th time. Boy, do I regret trying it so late. I am officially hooked and will have to admit that Taco Joint is my favorite taco joint (see what I did there? haha). Because it is as good as everyone makes it out to be, expect a wait. And because it is conveniently located near campus, expect to drive around for a bit to find parking. Worth it? Yes. What really sets Taco Joint apart from other taquerias is that their tortilla is handmade, thin yet toasted to a minimally burnt crisp! Here are the tacos I tried, ranked from most delicious to still-delicious-but-not-as-delicious: 1. Street Taco -- so juicy and flavorful, and did I mention? There's avocado. 2. Fried Fish Taco -- The honey lime slaw that it comes with is the bomb! 3. Steak, egg & gouda cheese -- Love how fresh the gouda cheese tastes! 4. Whole Mole -- Comes with shredded chicken and as the name misleadingly suggests, there is no guacamole, but it does come with queso fresco! While all these tacos are good enough by themselves, do *not* forget to top it off with one or two or three or all of their salsas/sauces. I advise you to try them all, because they're all great. Remember that your eyes are always hungrier than your stomach, so resist the temptation to order everything off the menu. The tacos are stuffed to where 2-3 tacos should be enough! read more

In a town where Torchy's Tacos reign supreme, Taco Joint is a fantastic, more traditional taco purveyor. Operated by the neighboring Sao Paulo's restaurant, Taco Joint offers a killer menu and a fantastic breakfast/lunch option for UT students. Their Street Taco is an absolute must-have (make sure to get a lime). Combine with a mixture of the Green + Avocado sauces and you've got yourself a serious taco. I usually get a breakfast taco (potato + egg + cheese) and a Street Taco. The El 4/20 and El Senior Crockett are also fantastic choices. If you're a UT student, then you should be coming here at least once a week. You can get two extremely delicious and filling tacos for about $6. The only caveat is it gets really busy at lunch time and an order can take over 15min to be filled. So either come early (before 11:30am) or late (after 12:30pm) to avoid the craziness. Make sure you check the UMeTime app to see if there are any deals being offered.
