The comfort food spot to end all comfort spots. This place is such an Austin classic and I'm so surprised at how often I go. It's not anything super fancy or elevated or with high-prestige, it's classic homecooked style cozy texmex and honestly, that's all I need sometimes. If I'm craving a taco or chilaquiles with a horchata to wash it down, I'm coming here. This place has seen me on many slow weekend mornings or before the commute to work. All their food is amazing. The tacos are underappreciated as I never see people talk about how big the portions are for a cheap price. I'm a big fan of the fish tacos especially. But my classic is always to get the chilaquiles plate. It comes with everything you would want and it's so much food for a good price. This is a great spot that will never lose my patronage.

The Taco Joint is an Austin classic for a reason! I recommend The 'Steak and Gouda' taco. The steak is tender and that smoky gouda creates a flavor profile you won't find at other spots. I also highly recommend the 'El 4/20' if you want something unique with the shoestring papitas.

I'm surprised this place is still as popular as it was when I was in college. I used to love this spot and hadn't been in so long. Gave it a try since I work nearby but I'm so disappointed. I ate my tacos only about 10 minutes after picking them up. They were completely greasy. Their tortillas are still good but the bacon in the taco is a bunch of chunky and fatty pieces. Needs to be cooked better. They do give you pretty large tacos. It's just a shame they are not as enjoyable to eat as they once were 10+ years ago.

Vegan torta

I came here with a group of friends during a trip to Austin, and it was great! The music was a great mix of old and new latinx hits! Think Marc Anthony, Celia Cruz, and Bad Bunny! The food was also really really good! I'm vegan and they had a few options for me! I tried their vegan torta, and it was delicious and filling! I'd definitely recommend to a vegan friend who is looking for a good deal and leaving full! Note: They have 'Just Egg' on the menu, but the cashier confirmed that this means it only contains egg from chicken, but is not the vegan brand Just Egg. My friends are not vegan, and they also really liked the food! They got the spicy torta, and they said it was SPICY!! like they were sweating! So beware!

I still think my original review, an ode to my friend Juan, is one of the most beautiful reviews I've written. This update is a chaotic one. After the wildest night of my life that culminated in me getting left on the side of the road at 4:30am and locked out of my friend's apartment, I decided to treat myself to breakfast tacos at Taco Joint. I got two potato, egg, and cheese tacos, and one chorizo and egg taco. The potato, egg, and cheese tacos were very loaded and soooo good. I thought the three tacos were somewhat pricey at $11.64 total, but I was full after two, so I think I will just get two in the future. It is so tragic this location near campus is not open on Sundays.

Came from a recommendation from a friend saying their sauces are amazing! Not too packed at lunch time on a Friday but people were constantly coming and going. You order at the counter and they call your number to come pick it up. Overall I thought the portions were well worth the price! And the sauce did live up to the hype. I got the chipotle and avocado. Fish Taco - cooked well. nice texture. one of the better fish tacos i had for sure. 8.2/10 Street taco - basically a steak taco. was really surprised how much i liked this. meat was seasoned well. the cheese complimented it well. avocado was fresh. 8.6/10 Breakfast taco - egg sausage and cheese. not much else to say. most breakfast taco leave me yearning for more but the portion like i said was more than i expected. 8.4/10 Marg- good. 10/10

El Vegan torta was delicious. The burrito had way too much cheese. It was ordered with beef and there was hardly any beef in it. My party also ordered a quesadilla with beef which also had hardly any beef.

Best breakfast tacos in the city . I wish they had more locations I live north but the breakfast is da bomb

Solid service and decent Mexican food & tacos. I got the fried fish taco ($4.75), the steak, egg, and cheese taco (4.50$), and the enchilada fires with chicken (9.50$). The fried fish taco was decent. The steak, egg, and cheese taco was very good and was easily my favorite item. The enchiladas fries with chicken was very underwhelming and not worth it at all. I paid 3$ for chicken and got a small side of chicken added and was told that there nothing that could be done to possibly give me more to make up for small amount.. The two sauces I got for my tacos were the chipotle and the honey habanero. The chipotle sauce was pretty good but the honey habanero was too hot and wasn't for me. All in all, it was a decent Mexican experience but nothing very memorable besides the breakfast steak n cheese taco.

good flavored tacos close to the engineering side of the ut campus. close place to walk when wanting a quick food spot. pretty cheap priced compared to most taco places. loved the el senior crockett, very cheesy and flavorful. service is friendly and fast, ordering process is very speedy. no ut student discount

My friends that went to UT Austin and also those that moved to Texas mention about this place, so I decided to check this place out. On a hot 90+ degree Fahrenheit day, I was so glad this place is a brick and mortar place, not another food truck, to soak in some AC. On Saturday, there was happy hour for the whole day - great surprise! We tried 4 tacos and each got a 12oz margarita (the small size) - which was only $4 (plus 50 cents for salt rim). Chorizo & egg - pretty standard. The tortilla is toasted and slightly crunchy. For the amount of topping they give, $3 is such an amazing price. One taco is good for a light meal. Migas - this one was more substantial - in addition to egg, there were diced tomatoes, tortilla crisps, etc. This is a classic Texas breakfast taco staple, and they did it right here! El 4/20 - beef carnitas with fried potato sticks - this was quite interesting. The meat is solid but the potato made this a bit too heavy for my liking Street taco - has avocado, sirloin, onion - this felt a bit overpriced but it was good. I love the freshness of the avocado, and that they give a lot of meat. However, for best value, definitely stick with the breakfast tacos. For each taco, you can choose a salsa of your choice, which enhances your experience quite a bit. We got red, green, avocado, and peanut salsas, and I really enjoyed the peanut salsa as it is primarily peanut sauce with light elements of salsa, and it was quite different. Happy hour is amazing - the margarita we ordered were very strong, that if I had 2, I would be sufficiently drunk. All for the price of $4.50 (if you get it with salt rim which I recommend). The pricing and quantity of food make this a college student's paradise - and this is why it is so popular amongst UT Austin students, and one of my friends actually goes here almost every lunch.

Great Austin spot! Highly recommend stopping by here! The food is spot-on and quite filling! Highly recommend. FOOD: street taco is a wonderful take on a steak and cotija cheese taco and the fried fish taco is a MUST! I ordered it alongside an avocado and chipotle sauce and I cannot recommend it enough! Not terrible in price and not too long of a wait! Cheers

I've driven by El Alma many times being in the Austin area, but I never went until last Thursday, and after surviving a brief monsoon, I was glad to get a few drinks and eat some good TexMex with my large party just before a wedding. The best way to describe El Alma is that it is TexMex that is Austinified. Everything feels a little more unique and special than your classic TexMex options. I started off with a Mezcal Margarita that put a little hair on my chest and got me going. My group ordered two of their Nachitos, which were these nice nachos. For my main entrée, I got 3 Al Pastor tacos on corn with a side of their rice and beans. Their pastor was served with pineapples, onions, and cilantro with limes on the side. They were great and I immediately crushed them all. I thought their rice and beans were pretty good as well and a step above the typical TexMex rice and beans. The server was pretty attentive throughout our whole visit, and I honestly have no complaints about what they had to offer. Pricing on the meal and drinks was pretty standard for Austin, and I didn't think anything really took me out of the experience. On top of that, for being in Barton Springs, there is quite a bit of parking. I would love to come back at some point in the future and hang out on their rooftop bar because that seems like a lot of fun. Shoutout to El Alma for being a TexMex oasis saving me from the MoPac traffic. RIYL: TexMex, but better than your average

So we were thinking of tacos or Mexican food and my daughter suggested this spot as she had come here with some friends and really enjoyed their sopecitos. I had never had a sopecito! What is that! So we had to try... We were lucky to arrive at the right time (9 pm!) where we got their last table!! Make reservations or something because this is another one of those places that fills up! Everything was delicious, the food arrived promptly, the portion size was perfect and bountiful and everything was super enjoyable. I really enjoyed trying some New Mexican favorites.
