A bit disappointing. The food was actually pretty good...it was the service that was the problem. No smiles...no welcomes. There were two hostesses at the front counter and not once did either of them greet us. Our server sat us. Taco Giro's food is comfortably okay, like most other middling Mexican restaurants in town. Their tacos, both meat and fish, are fine, and their chile rellenos are okay. The giant stone cauldrons of meat and seafood are a fabulous gimmick and taste pretty good, albeit too salty. The salsa bar is nothing to write home about. The service was polite and attentive but, as many other reviewers have observed, the prices are excessive for the quality and quantity of food. I had a Pork Carnitas plate. The beans were great, the rice was fluffy and not dry the pork, however, was not like any carnitas I've ever had before. Carnitas are usually fried but this was slow roasted whole, seasoned and the outside and sliced into medallions. It was OK But most importantly, it was not over salted! Yeah!! So many places hide (good and bad) flavor with too much salt. Maybe it was an anomaly, let's hope not. I'll go back again, though. Just to be fair/sure. Wheelchair access is flat and easy and an extra plus is that they have automatic doors! Just roll up and they part like the Red Sea. Only one blue zone, though, and it is not van accessible. The hashed off area is on the left, the driver's side, and as you know, lifts set out onto the right. If you are independent and drive a van, there's a spot in the far southeast corner of their lot. We have eaten here dozens of times and everytime is wonderful. We usually get their fajitas, or their 5.99 lunch special wet burrito. Many times we have simply gone in for their fish taco special at lunch time, and they too are fantastic. Their lunch beef or chicken wet burrito is enough to get full, and take the rest home for another lunch or dinner. Today I decided to try their lunch buffet. 5.99 all you can eat, and it had some of the best chicken wings I've ever had. It does not taste like buffet food at all. There was cheese enchiladas, chicken wings, carmelos, a beef burrito, a big wet burrito, & a couple of other choices besides rice and beans. The service is always very friendly, they are always quick, food is hot, everything is perfect. I really do not understand the complaints. I've given the Grande location three chances to meet the standard set by the 22nd street Taco Giro....sadly, it failed all three times. Neither food quality nor service are worth returning for. Yesterday I stopped in for dinner right after work: about 510 PM. When I arrived there were only 2 other patrons, and I counted four waitresses milling about. Yet it took another 10 minutes to get water and a menu! I ordered the Steak Ranchero with corn tortillas. Before it arrived, a waitress came and dropped off a plate of tostadas de ceviche that were meant for another table. When my order came, I got the tortillas first, then later the plate with the food. There were lettuce scraps on the lid of the tortilla holder. The steak ranchero came in a ramekin seated on a larger plate with refried beans, rice, and a tiny glob of guacamole. The sauce for the entree tasted like canned tomatoes, and was bland. The meat was tough and was cut into thin short strips instead of chunks, which is how it's usually prepared. The green and red peppers were also in strips, but the strips were four inches long, making it necessary to cut them up, hard to do while sloshing the sauce around in the ramekin. Only the onions were in bite sized chunks. The guacamole contained the stem of the lettuce--or some other hard inedible vegetable part. I got maybe a tablespoon of guacamole anyway. The rice was mostly underneath the ramekin and guacamole or drowned in beans, so I can't comment on its flavor. I did like the beans, so the review has two stars, not one. When it was time to go, I asked for a box to take leftovers home (I have a spouse who is less picky than I). I thought that was a clear sign that I was done and ready for my check. 10 minutes later, no box and no check, so I went to stand in front of the cash register. A woman was there smiling and shuffling papers, but she ignored me, then left. Another woman came and could not open the cash register. Finally a third woman came and rang me up. Keep in mind, there were still four servers and (by the time I left) only 7 tables of customers. My other two times there, it's been the same problem: disorganized, no timing, no basic service skills. I don't know what became of the leftovers. I hope they did not end up on someone else's plate. read more

Took 35 minutes just to receive our lunch specials, and when we saw at least three other tables receive their food before us, we asked if ours was almost ready, the waitress' exact words were, "I don't know!" The cooks sent me a raw fish then when I sent it back the sent it out burnt. It was late and I asked them to make a new one or I don't want to pay for this meal. The servers English was limited so she said she'll talk to the manager and came back and said "okay" and walked away. Not knowing what she was saying okay to I waited there for a whole hour with a baby. But I ask her if my new fish was coming cause it's been forever and she runs to the manager at the bar who doesn't bother to come over to clear things up but yells across its okay and wave gestures me away! I am giving this 4 stars but with a minus sign. Huevos Rancheros were very good except the eggs were not really done as I had ordered them. Carmelized onions in the sauce were a nice touch. And I enjoyed the rice and beans. Chorizo Con Huevos were at a medium spice which was good. There is a salsa bar with some nice selections. The tortillas and the chips were fresh even though we arrived at 9 am. And the service was quick. We sat on the patio because we had the dog with us; it was pretty dirty out there but there had been some wind the night before which could explain the trash. My father-in-laws favorite Mexican seafood place had just opened up a new location so we just had to go check it out while we were visiting Tucson. Being opening weekend, there were some glitches with the service but everyone enjoyed their food. In addition to cocteles and molcajetes they also have more traditional non-seafood Mexican food. We stopped here after walking out of St Mary's Tacos around the corner (my wife didn't like the seating arrangement there). It was lunchtime on a weekday, so both places were hopping. The waiter we had was great, really helpful and pleasant. Wife had the caldo de pollo and I had a burrito de chile verde. She liked her soup a lot. I tasted the chicken, it was perfect. The chile verde was thick with pork and very good. I would have it again. We split a shrimp cocktail. I was less impressed with that, but what do you want for shrimp in the desert. It's a solid 4. Depending on what you're used to, the neighborhood may shake you a bit. It's pretty gritty. I don't know that it's a rough part of town or unsafe or anything, but it's not North Scottsdale either. read more

I'm a fan with one reservation..first the good stuff..... Good salsa bar with as much as you wanted....great choices, the bean type dip was delicious. Seafood tostados, the best, lots of good ingredients, plenty of fish, yummmm. A do-over warranted...except for below...still on the good stuff.... The chili rellanos, my Moms favorite, she liked.....good rice and beans on the dish my dad had and there was so much conversation going for this group of 6 adults and one child that my dads dish was gone and forgotten before I could ask him how it was. We came during happy hour that made us happy....$2.99 for margaritas, tasty but after two drinks we barely felt it, so not sure how much liquor was in it; or have I been drinking too much lately (no, I haven't really...and seldom tequila...) The waitress was engaging and helpful until..... Now the part we were very very disappointed in. My brother went to pay and told the waitress he was leaving the tip on the table. Turns out, it was already added in the bill. He did not notice this and it was not relayed when he mentioned to the waitress he was doing this. Hence, a 35% tip! Now, if he wanted to tip that much, no worries; but when you don't know, it is not explained or mentioned anywhere we saw, it is a little shady. He told her he was and she had every opportunity to mention this. I know waitresses don't make that much but it doesn't make the 'shadiness' right either. My brother says "buyer beware".....it soured the good time we had. We are from out of town and perhaps for seatings' of 6 and above this is routine but we had no way of knowing. Too bad this seems to be normal, we generally tip 20%, it has saved me $$ (bummer for them) before but when you don't know, it is an unsolicited hidden hefty tip. Buyer beware.... read more

Wanted to check out a new mexican food join over the weekend. I heard some good things about this so we gave it a shot. Gotta say I left disappointed.
