Our family loved this place! We were looking for somewhere close to our hotel, affordable and good, and this for the bill. The service was fantastic and everyone raved about their food. We got chimichangas, menudo, grilled fish tacos, beef taco and cheese enchilada and kids chicken quesadillas. We also had horchatas and they gave us extra for free! Tucson has some great taco joints, and Mr. Baja Fish is one of those places. The service was friendly, and we received our food quickly. I tried the fish, lengua, and shrimp tacos. All the tacos were solid, and the portions were very respectable. Each fish taco had two fried fish pieces with a nice, flaky interior and slaw piled on top. This little "order at the counter" restaurant is very clean and service is friendly. There's a salsa bar with 3 types of salsa, 2 creamy sauces, limes and cucumbers. We were given a plate of chips that were fresh and perfectly salted. Baja fish tacos are served piping hot, on delicious corn or flour tortillas that are light and tasty, and hold up for the life of the taco. The fish is crunchy and peppery and plentiful. This was one of those (delightfully) unexpected surprises. I was searching for a non-commercial eatery in the near-north area last week and tripped across this fish taco place. I dropped in and saw that they also had Lengua and Cabeza?! These are not always on a taqueria's menu but when cooked properly, are outstanding. I ordered those two along with a fish taco. The fish was "good" but holy smokes were the Lengua and Cabeza delicious - tender, shredded, and so flavorful. I can't wait to return! FYI, taco Tuesday means $1.50 each, all day long (but not the Lengua or Cabeza tacos) AND each one arrives completely plain (no toppings). However, there is a small salsa and fixins bar where you can add green or red salsa; pico de gallo; and shredded cabbage. Maybe I should have tried the seafood here, because what I had was not good. I had hoped for some tasty, locally owned Mexican food in my Tucson hood, maybe something that might be elevated a half-step over the drive-thrus nearby. Instead it's worse. Mr. Baja is worse than all the drive thrus on this side of town. Here's what I tried: Tamales: These were ok Salsa: None of them were hot, but at least they were flavorful. Not bad. Al Pastor chimi: So dry, I thought the ingredients had to have been from the previous day, just heated up. Seriously, the rice was hard! The al pastor was too, and it had way too much sugar, not enough salt or spice (like annato/achiote). It was served naked too, not even topped with sour cream or pico. Definitely the sorriest rendition of AZ's official dish I've tried in quite some time. Maybe I'll be back some time for the admittedly alluring Taco Tuesday specials. I expected this place to replace Rubio's fish tacos. This place was far from it. I was charged $9.20 for two tacos. A fish taco and a shrimp taco. I gave the woman $20. I was expecting $10.80 in change. She reached into a designer bag and grabbed $10 and handed it to me and walked away. She totally kept the 80 cents. Not cool. So I stepped back wondering if she would give me the rest of my change. She ended up serving the next person. So that should tell you something about this place. As for the food, it was okay. The shrimp taco was loaded but strangely didn't have much flavor. No sauce or anything. The fish taco was barely loaded with fish. Very skimpy on the fish taco. They load it with bland veggies and pico to make you think it is a lot. Real Baja taco enthusiasts know this place is just another Filiberto's hiding behind the Baja Taco name. Great prices on Taco Tuesday for meat options only ($1.50/taco) makes for a good deal, but the tacos and flavor themselves were average. We ordered takeout and grabbed several meat tacos for the Tuesday special and the 3 taco platter with battered fish tacos so that we could try a variety. The platter comes with rice and beans which were on the saltier end for my taste but okay. My husband enjoyed the pollo tacos the most out of the bunch because of the char and flavor while the carne was a tad disappointing and needed a little more marinated flavor and the carnitas were average. I came here for lunch today and tried a variety of tacos: battered shrimp, battered fish, grilled shrimp, grilled fish, chicken and steak. The fish and shrimp tacos come with a sauce that is really good but overpowering if you eat more than one of them. My favorite was the battered shrimp followed by the grilled fish and steak tacos. Next time I will only get the battered shrimp and 2 steak tacos. The steak had more flavor than the chicken. I did not like the green salsa or pico de gallo from the condiment bar, just the onion & cilantro mix. It didn't take long for my order, service was friendly and the restaurant was clean. Okay, I'm going to need everyone to listen to me. Do we live in a desert? Yes. Are we a ridiculously long drive away from commercial game fish? Yes. Does Mr. Baja Fish make you forget the two former facts? Also YES! Mr. Baja Fish is the only (decent) dedicated fish taco venue I've come across in Tucson. I avoided it for far too long, snobbishly concluding that is Desert-Folk couldn't produce a decent fish taco. Finally, or especial Tuesday, I gave it a try. Have I mentioned their Taco Tuesdays? Hands down the best deal in the city. I got four tacos for under $10. And they were excellent. The fish tacos can come either battered or grilled (but why skip out on battered?). The battered is top notch. They also serve less popular fair like cabeza and lengua, both expertly prepared. And - honestly? - their carne asada leaves both Guero Canelo AND El Nene in the dust (yeah, I said it!). Came here looking for a decent fish taco. I placed an order for my tacos and my partner ordered beef. The place wasn't too busy; only one small family came in after us, yet somehow our order was forgotten. The owners were doing their best to work out of a confined area. The father and son were scrambling in a small kitchen cooking on a flattop to get the order(s?!?) out. I finally went up to politely ask where they were with our order. The owner apologized profusely and actually made me an extra taco. He proudly brought our food to our booth. They flavors were average and nothing to rave about. And while I waited I heading down a narrow hallway to use the bathroom. Someone had left a dirty mop and in a dirty bucket with dirty in the hall. The floors were definitely in need of some cleaning. The drink station was also stained and dirty. The salsa bar was inviting at first, but the green salsa was past its prime and there was crossover spills. They give generous portions, their carne is grilled to order, their fish (for the fish taco) is freshly hand dipped again, made to order. Took an out of town guest in to get some fish tacos. Got the battered fish taco platters with rice and beans, a cheese quesadilla, and large margaritas. According to our guest the battered fish tacos were awesome, and the sauce on them was phenomenal and they would've liked more sauce. The cheese quesadilla was good. Everything was served in either to-go containers or styrofoam plates. Our group of five ordered different items so I was able to see a variety of dishes. I ordered the chicken bowl which was served with pinto beans, rice, shredded lettuce, sour cream and some sort of pseudo guacamole. I skipped the pico de gallo. I enjoyed my bowl for the most part. The Chicken had a nice char and it was cooked well. I found the beans and rice to be salty- but I have a low tolerance for salt Others ordered bowls as well- carne asada and barbacoa. My review is based on a visit a couple of months ago... I've generally liked Mr. Baja Fish, but they did away with the $1 street tacos, which are now $1.50. That's quite a leap for some small tacos. So, that was a disappointment. However, as I was walking up to the door, I spotted a poster advertising a flautas dish. The flautas in the photo looked delicious, so I thought I'd try them. However, what I received was nothing like the poster photo. I recognized what was on my plate right away. They were just the super-cheap Deli-Mex taquitos from the frozen aisle of the grocery store. Now, I've enjoyed some decent frozen taquitos in my life. However, that Deli-Mex brand is absolute trash. If you microwave them just a bit too long, they turn bizarrely hard and dry. Seriously disgusting. These 4 Deli-Mex taquitos literally costed 95 cents at Fry's. Mr. Baja Fish charged me $8 for them. I could hardly believe what I had been served. I give them 1-star for that visit, and I'll grant another star because this place used to sell me some good tacos at a great price. Sorry for the bad review, but this has stuck in my mind, and I no longer feel any desire to visit. I felt genuinely cheated getting frozen taquitos when I was expecting authentic food prepared by a cook. Thumbs way down. :C read more
