This place caught me off guard! I've tried many taco restaurants around town, especially all the popular ones that are "award winning" but they never lived up to the hype. Taco Chelo is actually pretty good. My fiancé and I ordered a variety of tacos: -Beef Barbacoa Taco: I'm not a barbacoa person but I really enjoyed this one! The beef was flavorful and tender. -Fish Taco: Fried fish with a cabbage slaw, pickled onions and crema. It was good, but not my favorite. -Costra Taco: If you love cheese, this taco is for you! The carne asada is delicious! Honestly the best carne asada that I've eaten in the valley. I liked that it was stuffed with grilled onions too. The cheese was a bit much for me. It would've been better with fresh cilantro and onions as well. Chicken Taco: Adobo marinated chicken with avocado salsa and coijta cheese. It was solid. Chips, Salsa & Guac: Crispy chips and decent sauces. I wish they were spicer. I would have preferred the guac to have more than just salt (add cilantro or something). The downside is that they don't offer chip refills, even if you still have leftover salsas. Coming from TX, the fact that the majority of Mexican restaurants in Phoenix don't offer complimentary chips and salsa was culture shock for me. And no refills even if we purchase the chips. They serve al pastor on Wednesdays only so I'm curious to try that! Next time, I would order the carne asada taco too. read more

Tried this place for the first time, and it was delicious and a very fun atmosphere, great service! I had the chips, salsa, and guacamole, chicken taco, and fish taco. The chips, salsa and guacamole was a nice starter, and the fish taco was amazing! It is really good with green salsa! I did not like the chicken taco, because the chicken was too firm and chewy for my liking. Furthermore, the flavors did not work for me. Overall, great place, very inviting and affordable! An unexpected experience! Tacos have been very hit or miss for me in Phoenix. Perhaps growing up in San Antonio has made me snobby. But I came with the expectation of a mediocre taco stop that focuses on cute aesthetics and drinks. Taco Chelo indeed has cute esthetics and good drinks. But their tacos are NOT mediocre! I was impressed by the quality and flavor! First and foremost, their corn tortillas are excellent. Tasty, firm, but still soft and delicious. From there, my fiance and I tried a variety of tacos: Barbacoa - i think the best I've had since San Antonio. Tender, not overly greasy, and savory. Don't skip! Fish Taco - crispy, tasty, very solid! Chicken Taco - nothing special, but chicken was moist and seasoned well Costra - very heavy taco with an impressive cheese skirt. The carne asada was delicious! If I were to order again, I would probably get the normal carne asada with onion + cilantro but if you are a cheese lover this ones for you! Unfortunately they only have Al Pastor on Wednesdays, but I guess that's an excuse to return! We also got some chips and salsa. Chips were nice and crispy, and salsas were quite tasty. The guacamole was really just mashed avocado, I wish it was dressed and seasoned like a true guacamole. The chips cost money (as most taco joints seem to do in Arizona) but I was a bit disappointed that with a paid chip and salsa, they did not provide chip refills. We had plenty of salsa remaining. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised and will be coming back to Taco Chelo a lot more in the future! read more

We couldn't wait to try Taco Chelo now that it was opened in Tempe. It was a collab between a great shaft and a great artist, and you can really tell. The building has a very tall ceilings with exposed ductwork and Florida ceiling glass on two sides. There's a gorgeous carved wooden bar, a hanging cactus garden over a long table, a counter with hanging pots and baskets, but the piece to resistance is the absolutely beautiful rotablo lined with neon lights hanging on the wall. Even the four is interesting - - I loved the tiles! I also really loved the corn cob stools. There are a couple of long tables for big parties or to be shared (one of them bar height), and several smaller tables. There is patio seating, which will be great in the evening after an ASU game when it's cooler outside. You order at the bar, and someone will bring out your food to your table - - very quickly! We had barely settled in before our food was delivered. The food was delicious! We had an order of chips with guacamole and salsa, and four tacos - - the Sonoran, the carne asada, the chicken, and the carnitas. All or fantastic! So glad that we now have this great taqueria a little closer to home. We will definitely be back - - next time we'll have to have a couple of drinks! read more

When my husband suggested we go check out this new Taco Chelo location in Tempe on a recent weeknight, I was definitely game... I love a fast casual concept and this one did not disappoint. This colorful location is clean, comfortable, and has a fun vibe to it. I like how you can see the kitchen and the tortillas cooking when you walk up to the register to order. Service is friendly but had a few kinks with the register and the system of keeping a tab open and then adding to the order and paying, but we figured it all out! We started with an order of chips with salsa and guac and some drinks while we waited for my brother to join us. When he arrived, we ordered a second chips / salsa / guac app and then our choice of entrees. I had a bean burrito and fish taco and this was more than enough food for me - both delicious! My husband and brother enjoyed three tacos each and seemed to be very happy with their orders too. We all enjoyed the salsa (both red and green)... While we were full, we couldn't NOT order the arroz con leche. It was the perfect sweet ending to our meal. The art and decor on the inside and outside was very pleasing to the eye, loved the ambience! First the horchata was very good. It doesn't take too milky like some places make it. It was a perfect amount of sweetness and very refreshing. The tacos were also chefs kiss. I finished them so quickly, def recommend ordering more than 2 like I did. The tortilla was soft but not chewy and the meat was salty which i love. The chicharrones were good but not my favorite. They did not have a lot of meat inside it more just tasted like fried chips. We came for happy hour. Margaritas are $6 and added $0.50 for flavoring which is a great deal! They also have $2 tacos and $4 chips for the table with a bit of guac and salsas. The staff was very present and did a great job of clearing the table. It's a walk up order, and they have indoor and outdoor seating available. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you. Bathrooms were very clean. The decor is beautiful. We loved watching the 'grandma' make fresh tortillas. We had a bunch of tacos, some quesadillas and the salad (which had the fruit on it). Omg that salad was something I could eat all day. The food was incredible- we are still talking about it. Very happy Taco Chelo has a second location in Tempe. I live in the East Valley, but I work in Tempe very close to this location. I've been following this restaurant on Instagram and have been wanting to go downtown to try it for awhile. Me and some friends popped in for lunch and loved how the restaurant is decorated. It is a vibe! Festive! The food is amazing. I had the Costra and Sonoran tacos and they were phenomenal. Another in our group had the chicken and Carne Asada taco and both were equally phenomenal. In addition to the fantastic food, they also have some craft cocktails, beer and house made agua frescas.
