This T.J. Maxx is smaller than others in the area but still has an adequate number of items in each department. My friend and I had some time before a movie so we browsed the items here, which ranged from a lot of XXL size clothing to picked-through home decor and accessories/accents to random novelty gift items. Because a lot of the items they carry are unique and in a quantity of one, maybe two, the store has the feel of a thrift store, with shelves not logically arranged with like items, frames and glassware in disarray and poorly organized, and a messy feel overall. There was a Christmas clearance area toward the back of the store that caught my attention, particularly a lighted LED branch accent that was clearanced down but still overpriced for what it was. Overall, the store is decent and a good addition to Ellsworth Place.

TJ Maxx opened today with a special ribbon cutting ceremony at 7:30 am. I wasn't there that early, which is too bad, since I missed out on the gift card hint throughout the store. There were many bigwig company employees there, and everyone was really friendly. Where were the giveaways that were promoted? I think they had reusable bags, but I wasn't offered one with my purchases. However, they did make a sizable donation to Shepherd's Table. This store has the same stuff as the TJ Maxx in Hyattsville minus the free parking on the weekdays. I got stuff for me and my pooch. I hope folks can get pass this being part of City Place Mall. If you enter by Ben and Jerry's, you can take the escalator downstairs and walk straight to this store. I'll be back for Christmas gift, but most likely only on the weekends, when parking is free.

    Fathers day specials.

The reason I go to t.j max is that they sell good stuff for the fraction of the price. I like coming here and I spend some good amount of money here from time to time. This store has lot of orignal stuff and many brand and different things for a fraction of the orignal price. One thing I dont like about this place is that whenever I shop the security guard or lost prevention team guys are always following me around the store from a distance and somehow i feel unsafe and very uncomfortable. Also the fitting room lady, I think she is Ethiopians she is rude. Today when I wanted to try some pants she checked the tags and price before I went in and after I finished but she DID NOT do so to my friend I think because he was....I will let you guess why. After all it's a great place to go and shopping for good yet cheap stuff.

Oh boy, so here we are at the top of this complex. And if you were paying attention to the reviews…read moreprior, the further up we go, the messier it gets. If you walk into this store, you will definitely understand that. Actually, mess is an understatement for this place. You automatically feel tired when you walk in here. Maybe it is because you are overlooking what appears to be the whole store from a landing. Got bad knees? Take the ramp to the right. As you look out over the vast land...err, store, you then notice a set of escalators, that's right, there is two levels inside the location. And as you might have guessed, the second level is messier. If the mess doesn't bother you, trying to get a cart will. There are never any carts, or baskets for that matter, available to shop. So I hope you didn't come here with high hopes of filling up a cart of deals. Let's go back a bit here. While you're looking out on the store, don't let yourself get depressed by the dingy digs and bad fluorescent lighting. I mean this place can definitely change your mood when you come in here. Majority of the first floor of this place is clothing. Mostly women's with some men's and teens. Throw in a toy section (which is torn apart by the wild children let loose by the parents so they can shop) and some handbags and you get the jest of the first floor layout. If you happen to be looking for housewares, kitchen gadgets, infant and toddler clothing, head upstairs. While riding the escalators keep arms and legs inside the moving stairs at all times. No, for real, please do this. Last time I was there, and I pray that they cleaned this, there was what appeared to be a chocolate milkshake thrown against the walls going up the escalators. Yeah, please keep your hands in at all times. Upstairs was wild. Try to avoid the infant and toddler clothing and make your way to the hodgepodge that they call housewares and kitchen gadgets. If you want to think that you are in the 80s kids game show 'Finders Keepers' then by all means start tearing things up like everyone else did before you. Maybe, just maybe, you will find the one item still in the package and unbroken. May the odds be ever in your favor if you so choose to shop here. Because you never know what you may stumble across. I do mean stumble, be sure to watch where you are walking because there are items everywhere. Also be prepared to stand in line at the registers for a while as people are lining up there as if it is the best ride in the place.

I remember when Veteran's Plaza had the artifical grass back in the day. I have seen businesses like Pier 1 and different restaurants and shops come and go, but I have still found myself coming down here. One thing I have always loved about DTSS is the ethnic/cultural/national diversity in the area. I have observed different African, Asian, Latin, even Pacific Islander people down here. It's not just a White and Black town by any stretch of the imagination and is one of the most diverse places in all America! Now the parking garages might not be the best convenience wise, but at least they do not cost that much money on weekdays and are actually free on weekends. The events are what shape DTSS. I have been to place such as Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee, Bourbon Street in New Orleans Louisiana, Greektown in Detroit, Michigan, and E and 4th Street in Cleveland, but home is always where the heart is. Ellsworth Place always will be a street that is iconic in its own right and a gem in the DMV region. The best time to visit although crowded but for good reason is when free festivals especially music festivals such as the Annual Blues festival and the Annual Jazz festival are in town in DTSS. These are fun, free, and great for singles, families, couples, you name it! Sure, the crime has increased and there has been negative press and attention around that, but the place is still cool just to get out, people watch, maybe hit a restaurant like Copper Canyon and even go to the newer arcade/bar/restaurant the Eleanor that is cool encompassing miniature bowling (duck pin), basketball hoops, pinball machines, among other arcade games. It is just the simple things in life sitting outside on a nice spring, fall, or even summer evening/night and getting some fresh air and relaxing is key. The Veterans plaza portion further down Ellsworth place during the winter time has the popular ice skating rink. The fall time will showcase the legendary and free, yes I said free, annual Silver Spring Jazz festival that attracts thousands of people. The Ellsworth place is set up like a plaza, and an outdoor elevator and stairs can take people upstairs for more restaurants including a Japanese grill, although they have lost their spark and flame in recent years, if you get what I mean. Family lunch, dinner, singles, dates, couples, you name it there are restaurants and things to do here. Shopping is nice along the strip. DSW was outside next to the Wayne garage for centuries but has moved onto one of the upper levels of Ellsworth Place mall (at the intersection of Fenton Street and Ellsworth Place) and has been replaced by a Nike factory store outlet. Not too far from Ellworth place has the legendary AFI Silver Theater and Cultural Center for classic movies with popcorn, beverages even beer, and of course the Fillmore music concert for awesome live music, among small business/boutiques scattered around the area.

What should be a tip off here is the layout of the store, it is quite odd. The further back into the store you go, the worse it gets. From the mall area looking in, you are a bit deceived by this place. The front looks well stocked and organized and then as you go into the depths of this space, it is like everything went to hell. Especially the back back of this store. I assume that the mall overall use to be really busy as there was a rear entrance/exit, complete with registers and everything. Well that is closed off and the registers now appear to be a catch all for items that people didn't want and didn't get put back on the shelf. The registers also serve as a cutoff point for where this store just gave up on picking up items from the floor and cleaning. After I fought my way back to the front, and past several security people, I did find an item or two. Back to normal at the register, I paid and made my way out. Onto the next stop.

I will say they have a great selection of clothing and shoes. Everything else seemed kind of meh. The shoe section was annoying because I found boots that I absolutely loved. I thought they were my size, but because they were in my size's section. Nope! Just placed on the shelf, and this was the case with several pairs of shoes. The clothes were the same way. I don't know why I even continued to use the size markers. I will also say the staff was very friendly, but this store, like others have already mentioned, is a steaming hot mess.

I also find the uniqueness of the space appealing. My coworkers down here told me that this use to be a department store at one point and then it got redone into what is essentially an urban mall now. One that I personally think works. Parking is fairly easy here. You can do street (if you can find a spot) or the parking garage across the street. Depending on the floor you park on in the garage you have two options to enter Ellsworth. You can take the footbridge which will take you to the fourth floor of the mall, or you can go street level and cross the street. One inside it is a bit of a maze to find where you want to go. My tip here is to start on the bottom and make your way to the top. If you are a discount store shopper than this is the place for you. You can hop from TJ Maxx to Marshalls, than onto Ross's and Burlington. Throw in some Five Below and DSW and you probably just found an outfit for far less than going to a department store. I don't know what this was like before I moved down here, but it looks like it is in bit of a transition. The shoe store on the one level was on its way out and there appeared to be a storefront that was having work done on the inside. Food options inside aren't the best, but at least there are some.
