Several brands carried by The Phoenix, meanwhile, have reached out to me directly because they do not want their names associated with this kind of customer experience. What is most troubling is that reviews describing racial profiling and discriminatory treatment at this store go back to 2016. That is a decade. At that point, this cannot reasonably be treated as an isolated misunderstanding or simply a customer "feeling this way." If The Phoenix has been aware of complaints like mine for years, what action has actually been taken? Were those customers contacted? Was the conduct investigated? Were policies changed? Was anyone held accountable? A public Yelp response offering to speak "if I'd like" is not initiative. After ten years of similar complaints, the burden should not be on customers who felt profiled or humiliated to pursue the business for a conversation. If these concerns are genuinely being taken seriously, that should be visible in the behavior of the business, not just in the wording of its review responses. -------- At 44, I have never experienced treatment like this in a retail store and I've never written a review, but this warranted one. Following a conference in Washington, D.C., I stopped into The Phoenix and asked to try on a ring. An associate was helping me when the manager, Bonnie, followed us over. When I reached toward the open case to indicate the ring I wanted to see, she reprimanded the associate in front of me, instructed her to lock the case, and made the interaction feel as though I were being treated as a theft risk rather than a customer. Being Latina, the experience felt like racial profiling. I cannot speak to intent, only to the effect: feeling watched, suspect, and unwelcome. Founder to founder, I also found the judgment behind the interaction striking. Much of my own work centers on brand, customer experience, and how businesses earn trust. In a multi-brand store, where customers can easily buy directly from the designers or elsewhere, this kind of treatment is especially short-sighted. Even before that interaction, the atmosphere felt unusual. Bonnie was having staff stand by while she tried on clothing, creating an environment that seemed centered more on the manager than the customer. On Women's Equality Day, the irony was difficult to miss. Women are not exempt from treating other women badly. We should expect better.

To begin with, Expressions is a small store and very well managed. The employees are really great peoples and they are very honest. In my experience, Europeans have always been more helpful and honest than my country people in regards to sartorial matters. My cutest, most adorable and awesome clothes have all come from here. Namely, a reindeer dress. Also, a gorgeous cream boiled wool Mod style dress with bell sleeves. Additionally - oh - just a bunch of other clothes that serve dual capacities in both work and my social life. I try to quantify my wardrobe by certain categories. One of those categories is: Clothes to save to give to future daughter. All of my purchases from here fall under that category. It has kind of a cheesy name, but one that I really love telling people - simply for the pleasure of juxtapositions: "Hey, Gill - where did you get that dress/skirt/shirt? I LAAAVE IT." They have a certain aura and demeanor to them- super generous, content with life, and personable. I talked with the owner for several minutes about Turkey and making that connection is really such a hook for me to go back. Turkish people are incredibly smart, warm and are really business savvy. I went the "Expressions I" first, which is the one closest to Au bon pain which has jewelry, accessories, jeans and work attire and the "Expressions II" which is a few steps down underneath the ground floor has tons of formal dresses, dresses, and some shoes. I bought what I am pretty sure is my favorite top in a long time for $33. I love unique, but simple and this place has it. And I'm with Stef W. when she says it's contemporary and I feel like I could wear these things for several years. My compadre's browsed, but when Giovann noticed I wasn't delving into the clothing racks (i'm not much of a shopper), she came over to me and questioned me on what my 'style' was. Which left me speechless, b/c again, I'm not a shopper and am not the kind of girl who has any idea what "style" I prefer. So, she broke it down for me. "Tell me how you like to 'feel', not how you like to look". Thus began all of our journey into diva-hood. I found the sales reps in the store to be a little too...um...yuppy...for me. These girls just over do it. I've never really felt a part of the fashion world, and being around those girls for a good 30 minutes reiterated to me exactly why that is. I just don't appreciate people that think their better than you just because they spend their whole pay check on clothing and don't eat...ever. Yuck! Had it not been for the pushy and stuffy service, I would rate this store with 5 stars. The clothing is unique, high quality, and fits me pretty well. Of course everyone does. However, when you are trying to sell and convince me that a $100 cotton garment is worth buying, you've got to be on something. She was trying to convince me that this dress that was made in Indonesia in a sweat shop and where the worker made less than $3 for their efforts -- that I looked fabulous in this completely hideous dress. She kept saying 'you look fabulous'...'this dress is so stunning on you'... Girl please. My body was busting out of this thing in all directions. She was working hard... really hard. I respect the clothing they sale. Carly C. bought this amazing dress that suited her and will be great for a night out in the very near future. It was a steal in my opinion. They've got a very nice selection of shoes and clothing for those cute fashionistas who can afford to drop $100 or $200 on a single clothing item. Unfortunately I do not fit that genre. I am just another common folk trying to make ends meet. In the mean time though, I can gaze and enjoy the quality wear that Max Studio has. They do have several items under $100, just thought I should point that out. This place is good for business professional clothing, LBDs (little black dresses), and nights out on the town.
