This was my second time visiting The Phoenix. Very cute shop with a unique inventory. I was able to find a cute gift for my brother. I do agree with other reviews, the employees watch you as a hawk, but I just ignore them. The cashier was very nice and even offered to pack the gift, free of charge! I will the wrapping paper would have been Christmas colors instead of a bright yellow. Most items are on the expensive side. Still, I'll be returning... probably for Mother's Day. read more

Came to this shop twice in the past 6 months. Cute stuff but the trailing the employees do from room to room while you browse is insane. This is for 2 reasons. Number 1 the trailing is just weird. Number 2 while they are trailing you from room to room they never ask can i help you so its just hawk eyes which is awkward. I can only assume theft must be insane here. The 1st time this happened i just left cause clearly if you think i need to be trailed I'm not the customer for you. Today i gave it one more shot really hoping i can browse in peace but NOPE same thing. While I was in the store i read yelp reviews and im glad im not alone apparently this is their deal. I just cant shop with an employee following me from room to room watching my every move. I get theft in dc is crazy but it just makes for an unpleasant atmosphere. Also i was the ONLY one in the store lol so imagine how strange that was. Anyways do they have cute things? Yes. But for a in person browsing experience id say Pass. Super unfortunate none of the employees were rude by any means but the trailing is more than bizarre. Glad i wasn't alone in the feeling. Id actually rather them say we hold bags at the desk while our clients browse if they are that nervous rather than what the current model is. Let people browse in peace PLEASE!!! I let the girls know at the front desk how strange it was and they apologized but i mean i can only assume management asks them to do this which is truly unfortunate. Get yourself some cameras, take our bags if you must but please don't hover over me!! If you are ok with being followed absolutely check this shop out. Gorgeous shop, but my experience with the staff was so bizarre. They made almost no effort to hide the fact that they were trailing customers from room to room. Every time I wandered into a different section, there was another salesperson who would also happen to wander in right behind me and just lurk and stare from the corner. It wasn't just me, either: each time a customer picked something up, someone would swoop in from no further than 3 feet away and offer to hold it at the front counter for them. Not inherently inappropriate, and it felt helpful the first time it happened to me. However, the second time I picked up something and started moving around the store with it, I turned to see the same lady who "helped" me the first time barreling wordlessly towards me, with both arms already outstretched and a wide, unblinking grin. She didn't say a thing and hardly made eye contact before she took the cups I was holding and only then said, so cloyingly, "I see you found these gorgeous cups" and turned around and walked away with them. What happened to "hi"/"hello"/"would you like me to hold onto those for you," etc.? That interaction made it absolutely clear that it wasn't about helping me, but rather about keeping customers' hands empty of anything they could possibly steal, as if that's an appropriate assumption to make about anyone. (When I went to check out, she hadn't even kept my items together and didn't know which were mine -- again, it was never about holding my items for me.) I don't blame them for being cautious, but caution with (much) more tact and consideration, which 90% of business owners on the same street seem to be able to exercise with no problem, would be so appreciated. read more

I love The Phoenix and make sure to visit it whenever I am in the DC area. I've found the selection to be beautiful and excellent in quality, and I particularly appreciate the choice of the owner to support artisans and such incredible craftsmanship. Seeing it in person has also made me confident to buy online when I'm not able to be in the area as the attention to detail is incredible and I know that what I'll be receiving is exactly what I'm expecting when making the purchase. read more

I try to stop by The Phoenix every time I'm in Georgetown, typically to see if they have any home goods/accessories within my budget, as the prices of the clothes, even when half off, are beyond my budget. In the past I've purchased a Christmas ornament, notebook, mini bowl, etc, so the stuff I'm purchasing is quite small, but it has unique designs, so I continually visit to see if I will find any cool items for myself, or gifts for others. During my most recent visit a younger staff member was very friendly, sharing info about different items I was looking at. Because there's lots of comments about this from other reviewers, I thought I should share that I never felt like I was being followed in a bad way, but maybe that's because when I worked in retail I would do the same thing. If I enter a section of the store you can't see from the cash register, I don't mind if someone follows me to that section. Since there's usually not high traffic in the store I can't tell if they do this with some people and not others, but assuming they do it with everyone, I have no problem with it. read more

It is tough to find a store in Gtown that has been in that hood for longer than ten years, but somehow-- Phoenix has been here for a little over fifty years. The initial focus was on items that the original owners would bring in from Mexico. Over the years, the inventory has expanded globally to include jewelry from Germany and Israel. My favorite items here are the sterling silver serving pieces. The prices on these run a range of fifty bucks for a knife to seven hundred dollars for a pitcher. As far as their clothing offering, Phoenix carries Eileen Fisher of all things. There is a small amount of clothes made of alpaca wool as well as beautiful scarves and wraps. read more

I have been to this shop 4 times. I made purchases during the previous 3 visits. Today was my 4th visit and I will not be returning. The blatant hawk eyes and following that occurs in this store is shameful. Literally following you from area to area. Though it has happened each time I've been in the store, today was the worst. I thought maybe because I was a man in a predominantly woman geared store was the reason I drew more than normal eye gaze. But from reading other reviews from over the years... it isn't just men who are followed and gawked at. Today, I heard the employee say she was rather new to another customer, so maybe she hasn't fine-tuned her customer stalking... Staff turnover seems to be high; I've never seen the same employees more than once. I fully understand that theft occurs, but there is a line between surveying customers and literally following them. They even have someone in the office sitting there watching people. The store is extremely small and it becomes quite obvious you're being followed. I come here before or after my haircuts at the salon across the street. So you are driving a once a month buyer out of the store. Behavior is gross and sad. I never leave reviews but felt compelled to do so in this case. Clearly other have as well about this topic at this boutique. Hopefully the owner(s) read these comments and reflect on the disgusting way the store is being ran. read more

This place is gorgeous and I loved the selection here, but the staff did not even try to hide that they were following me around the store and watching me to make sure I didn't pocket anything. I came here to see if anyone else had a similar experience, and sure enough, they did. This was not "being near to make sure no one needs anything," as was said in an earlier response from the business. I've done enough shopping as a brown woman to know the difference. What a great on-line find! I purchased several tops at a GREAT price (difficult to find Frank & Eileen on sale) so I was super excited about that. There was a very slight mix up on the order and Sam's communication was stellar in letting me know as well as offering me a replacement suggestion...which I loved once I received. Thank you for going the extra mile and sending my tops with cute bright orange ribbon tied around them. It's the little added details that make shopping at a store like this really special. Great store. The buyer is exceptional - the house and garden items and the jewelry are lovely and make great gifts (and presents for yourself). The clothing items are also great. The staff is so friendly and helpful. They are doing a great job making it a very safe place during COVID. I'm visiting DC from Minnesota. I went to this shop this morning with my husband to buy a hostess gift to bring to dinner at a friend's house tonight. My plan was to spend about $100, so not a huge purchase, but the shop was completely empty, so my $100 may have been all they were going to take in this morning. However, the two ancient bats behind the counter refused to greet us at all, and then, after my husband left the shop, they decided I needed to be "supervised"--not once asking if I needed help, but following me from room to room. Had they made even the slightest effort, I would have told them what I was looking for and my budget. Here's the thing people tend to forget. You're WORKING in this shop and I'm here as a CUSTOMER. You're overhead. I'm profit. Which part of this confuses you? I walked just down the street to Shop Made in DC. The woman working there was delightful and I ended up spending $200. Granted, still not a huge purchase by Gtown standards, and clearly one the old gals at the Phoenix couldn't possibly have been bothered with. Washington attracts visitors from all over the world. Word to the wise: NEVER judge a book by its cover. You have no idea who's in your shop and what she's willing to spend. So try to show a little grace and class. I wish I had never set foot in this store. Genuinely upsetting experience. I was followed around like a hawk and clearly profiled as a thief. At first I thought it was random but the more I wandered the more I realized that they don't even try to treat select customers with basic respect. Wow! Was I just shut down AND turned off by this store. Went in during the sale last week, (which ended yesterday) and revisited a cardigan I saw there. Found it on the sale rack and was told NO! Not on sale anymore - we made a mistake! Now I've made many purchases here, owner/manager didn't bother coming out to discuss with me - just sent me packing. What a HUGE mistake they made - very short-sighted. One day past sale and now I have to go to NM to purchase -- who ever heard of taking something off sale and putting it back on a "new for fall" rack? Really? In this economy, really? This is my "go to" store for gifts for self and others. The jewelry is quite wonderful and handcrafted. Many silver items are from Mexico. Prices range from inexpensive to expensive. There is something for everyone and different budgets. The clothes are stylish and sophisticated. The folk art is quite wonderful. The staff is friendly and helpful without being intrusive or pushy. I rarely walk into this store and walk out empty handed. It's a store for people who have discerning taste and want to purchase items you don't see elsewhere. read more

If there is an option of giving 0 star I will give them. This is a shop treating customer with unbelievable arrogance and disrespect. I loved an art piece and they told me I could put it on hold and came back on the "Shop small day" when they will offer me 15% discount. I checked with them and they were like 100% sure about it. I was very happy and then came back as promised in this day. It rained hardly the whole day but I still came all the way for the art piece. However when I arrived shop, they told me the discount didn't apply to my art piece and I need to pay full price! They had more than a week to notice me if they realized that it was a mistake. However they did nothing. The store owner was super indifferent. She even DIDN'T SAY SORRY to me and even DIDN'T LOOK AT ME! Even there was no one in the shop shopping, she still walked away from us pretending organizing some clothes. They tried to lie to me that it is a new collection. However I saw it half years ago. It was there for almost a year... This shop is very overpriced and the attitude of the shop owner is very snobbish and indifferent. I fell sorry for the artists who give their art pieces for them to sell. The shop totally destroy everything. The vibe in this store makes you feel that money, not love for the art, is the most important thing, which is disgusting. Even I can afford the full price, I won't buy with them. read more

Unfortunately I'll be taking my business elsewhere from now on as well. It's a cute store that I've frequented for several years since my my salon moved next door. Found a great pair of pants I wanted in a different color several weeks ago. Took them about a week to get them ordered and then several weeks to get them in. Apparently I had two days to pick them up but they never told me that so when I schlepped over to get them they had already sold them to someone else. Apparently two day hold is the policy-they just don't tell the customers. Now I'm out weeks of wait time and still don't have white pants to show for it. That's my last time shopping there! read more
