Betsy Fisher offers interesting takes on classic clothes as well as a team that gives superb, forthright advice. The result? You feel especially attractive, even as you are approaching 80. Two examples: The other day, mask on, I was walking down the street and a masked woman in medical scrubs turned around and said, "That's a great dress!" Last December, I spent two weeks in a surprisingly affordable hotel in the fanciest neighborhood in Buenos Aires. I had packed my tech stuff and clothes in two, 14x14 bags. When I checked out, the clerk said, "You are the most chic dresser." read more

I have this very stylish friend who lives in, of course, NYC. Last time she came to visit, she exclaimed "There is no good fashion in DC!" I brought her to Betsy Fisher and she changed her tune. I knew I had to bring out the big guns. During certain times of the day, they keep this place like a jewelry store -- you have to ring a doorbell to gain access. No, this isn't the Vera Wang Bridal store at Watergate. Thankfully, the staff is friendly not snobby. The clothes here are decidedly fanciful and femme. The designers here span the globe from France to Italy and back to the US. And names you'll recognize like Nicole Miller, Cynthia Rowley, and Easel. The price point here hovers around a hundred bucks and above so budget accordingly. read more

A real boutique experience--without the neiman marcus attitude. Yes, it is true this is not a place for $30 cardigans - that's what talbots and gap is for. This is a great place for investment pieces that you won't find in major department stores. There are fun trunk shows through the season that I look forward to. My betsy collection includes a great jacket, a timeless sweater, and some amazing shoes. I've always had great service, but when its busy, I just come back later or wait--they pay attention to your needs and know how to flatter your figure. There's also a great "gambler's sale" at the end of the season, so if you hold out, you can usually find some amazing deals - you'll find me diving in on the first day. If you want cookie cutter fashion, there's plenty of that around. If you want something special that stands out from a crowd-there's betsy fisher. I have no problem spending my hard earned money here. I know my clothes will look great for seasons to come :) read more

Whether I'm feeling like I want something practical with staying power or absolutely fabulous or the piece that makes everyone on this coast stop me and say, "WOW, where did you get that?" I know that the secret in my pocket is Betsy Fisher. Yes, I know the store is in Washington, DC and I know that I live in California. But guess what? There's a website. And not only that, they have personal shoppers. So you can call the store, tell them what you need, and magically a box of fabulous clothes arrives on your doorstep for you to peruse and try on in the comfort of your home! Keep what you want, send the rest back, and voila...you're the best dressed person in your neighborhood and you don't look like everyone else! I've been a huge fan of Betsy Fisher for nearly 20 years. The clothes at this store just get better and better. Betsy does a great job of scouring the markets for a mix of designers that you just don't find anywhere else so you look always look fresh, together and right on the mark! Of course a trip to the actual store can not be beat. There's nothing like standing in the dressing room and having outfit after outfit presented to you while you're sipping a cool beverage and being fawned over by their very knowledgeable and attentive staff. Trust me. If you're in Washington stop by and let them show you their latest fun collections. Or go to one of their fun evening store events. But if you're not in the DC Metro area, by all means take advantage of the shopping online. And did I mention the shoes? Oh yes, the shoes! There are shoes, too! Betsy Fisher has you stylishly covered from head to toe! read more

While visiting Washington DC, I wanted to purchase a few items for my girlfriend, and I wanted to get them from a local shop! I hit the jackpot. As a male who doesn't know much about women's fashion the assistance I received from the staff at Betsy Fisher was first rate!!! My sales person Emilie was top notch, patient, attentive, generous with her time and more than willing to show me multiple articles of clothing & shoes. After making my purchases, Betsy Fisher offered to wrap my purchases, working from the floor carefully boxing the what I had bought!!! I highly recommend this clothier, and visiting Betsy Fisher put a bow on my trip to DC! Thanks ladies read more

Don't be intimidated by the buzzer on the door. This boutique south of Dupont Circle has been around a quite a few years, and it's staying power is due to Betsy's great taste in selecting pieces for her namesake boutique. The other things going for this boutique 1) friendly staff, 2) selection of sizes above single digits. Many other boutiques have a snooty staff and nothing above a size 10. At Betsy's I find some cool (not matronly) clothes in my size. They also have gorgeous bags, shoes, and jewelry. Yes, it's pricey, but the clothes are designer pieces you won't see everywhere, and you get excellent service! read more

Although I haven't shopped the clothes extensively, I bought a pair of beautiful, elegant earrings at this location. However, more notably than the fashion offered there, is there customer service. The ladies were absolutely wonderful, over and beyond the most helpful people I've ever dealt with. I would recommend this place to EVERYONE AND ANYONE. Amazing! read more

Love Betsy Fisher. As someone who lives between Admo/ Dupont this is my one stop shop for the times when I need something to wear but don't have the requisite 2 hours to travel to/ wade through the racks at Georgetown. The prices are comparable to or even slightly lower than Georgetown stores like CUSP, Barneys co-op, Wink, etc. Jewelry and shoes are both very well curated. Clothing selection is deceptively limited as well, but the items are extremely versatile and easy to style as young/ older, formal/ fun. etc. My only complaint is that it's much more difficult to find clothing in my size (2-4) than at stores that cater to a younger audience. But I can't dock Betsy one star for selling out her styles. read more

I stopped here to browse on a recent trip to DC from Seattle, not at all expecting to actually buy anything -- I am a 12/14 on a good day and I honestly did not think they would have anything close to my size, as the norm in stores like this in Seattle is to cater to the 2/4/6 crowd. In any case, as soon as I entered the owner immediately came over to offer me a blood orange mimosa (!) and ask me some questions about my style and needs. After trying on a few items she immediately "got" me - my style, my likes, and most importantly, my body and what would work on it. From that point forward she brought me dozens of things to try on, including a few items that were obviously just for fun and not something she expected me to purchase (like a super over-the-top $600 dress that was just hilarious to put on). There were a few items she brought that I immediately said no to, and she did not pressure or question me at all. Not only did the store carry sizes that worked for my curvy body, but they even stocked cute shoes to fit my size 11 feet that normally resemble large loaves of bread! Big win. In the end, I walked out with two great dresses and a really cozy sweater. Two of the items were discounted by more than 70% so I also managed to get a really good deal. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in DC! read more

Sorry to report that this store has gone downhill in terms of service. I was very offended at the religious radio playing in the store last time I was there. Plus, could someone please get sales people to QUIT saying "no problem.' This store has a chronic case of that. read more

This is the most amazing store ever! Sound over the top? Read on! As a shopper who's had the fortune to shop here for over ten years, each piece that I've purchased remains timeless in my closet and savvy on my body. I wear Betsy Fisher's carefully selected clothes with confidence and pride. I hit this store about four times a year looking for THAT special item (or two or three) and know with certainty, I will find it. You won't regret stopping by if you are in the neighborhood (or even if you make a special trip ;-) ) read more

This store has great (but expensive) clothing that is well edited. The merchandise isn't at all overwhelming as the store has a lot of open space. Betsy was so nice and offered me a drink. Unfortunately, I had to decline since I was about to head out to an eye appointment. Apparently, they even drive to your home with several options which is convenient. I have my eye on a colorful maxi dress. Hopefully no one snags it before I get back. :) read more

Alright, this place is way too expensive, but you are paying for the service! The people there are amazing w/ fashion and knows exactly what is in the store and what looks good, even when you don't! read more

I live in NYC where there are plenty of stores (some say it is the fashion capital of the US) but I buy all my clothes at Betsy Fisher. There are a number of reasons. There are brands of clothing new to me that I would not be able to find in NYC. Everything is selected with the professional woman in mind. The sales staff is incredibly helpful. The entire experience is pleasant-how many other stores will make you a cup of tea or give you a bottle of water and let you use the ladies' room? True prices are not the lowest anywhere but nor are they crazy high. They are bridge line prices. Quality is crazy high. read more

Stopped in while on a business trip to DC in January, based on the yelp reviews. I was 6 months pregnant at the time, so not really expecting to find anything. The staff was extremely helpful but did not "hover", which I appreciated. I lucked out and it was one of their rare sale events, so I ended up with a shockingly comfortable pair of heels (that I am still wearing, and getting compliments on, at 8.5 months pregnant!) and a dress with enough stretch to wear with my bump. Very happy with their selection and their service. read more

You have to ring the doorbell to get in. Don't look like an idiot, like I did, by trying to open a very locked door while the entire staff watches you from inside. At first I thought, ugh, doorbell, so pretentious. BUT, the staff was really nice and they offered me champagne...so, yeah, check it out. read more

I passed this shop everyday on my way to and from work for the past year assuming that it would be too "upity" and pricey for me. I finally went in and was greated warmly by the staff. The selection is a little sparce, but the pieces were all winners! Their prices are a little steap, but their sales are out of this world if you can catch them! I would really recommend stopping by. read more

Eh, not impressed. I should probably say that I really hate when you have to buzz into a store. I don't know if it's safety thing or a way to know who's coming in, but at 5:30 on a Tuesday night on Connecticut Avenue, there's really no need for that. I entered the store, and a sales clerk just started at me. No "hi", no "can I help you," no "how are you", etc. It was weird. And I was in work clothes, carrying a very expensive purse - it wasn't like I rolled in there in my pjs and looked like I was going to make a scene or something. Strange. While they do have a wide range of sizes up to 14 (which is fantastic, because curvy girls love clothes and will spend the money too), the merchandise was way overpriced. I saw a few Donna Ricco dresses for over $400, when Macy's carries the same brand at about half that price. I'll pay more for good service and a fun shopping experience, but not that much. Consider me disappointed. read more

Love love love this store--so much that when the budget is tight, I can't even go near this place! There's a varied and well-picked array of designers and styles and trunk shows--do yourself a favor and check out just one of the trunk shows, so much fun (you may possibly want someone to safeguard your credit card, though, drinks plus shopping can be dangerous). And Betsy--cannot say enough wonderful things about Betsy--great eye, truly loves fashion, and just an all-around great human being! And don't even get me started on the shoes... read more

Just had to share how the clothes at Betsy Fisher are literally awed by those around the world. I bought a gorgeous Magaschoni cashmere scarf and recently took it on my travels to Doha, Qatar. It was the perfect travel companion and easy to throw over my shoulder while traveling on the plane or throughout the city. No matter where I went everyone wanted to know where I had gotten this gorgeous scarf. The staff and Betsy herself have been a huge part of all the amazing compliments I have received throughout my travels. The minute you walk through the door you're made to feel like you belong - no matter who you are. The store is collectively ran by the most warm welcoming and courteous girls in this city! I promise you won't regret the experience. read more

Betsy Fisher is AMAZING! If I had to pick just one place to shop, this would be it! As forty-ish working mom, I think Betsy has it all: beautiful looks for work and play (both the casual and formal kind) that are always fresh without making me look like I am trying too hard to be trendy. As if that wasn't enough, she and her staff are super friendly without being fake and have this uncanny ability to pick things out for me that I never would have considered (but once I have them on, are absolutely perfect!). It truly feels like shopping with a dear friend, but you don't have to spend hours trying to schedule it in advance! Over the years I have bought it all from her: clothes, shoes, jewelry. Her stuff lasts forever--you definitely get what you pay for! read more

Betsy worked with me for over 2 hours when I arrived unannounced. I tried on many things, but decided on a suit that needed small alterations. She not only directed me to an alterations shop in Georgetown, but personally drove myself and my husband. Betsy stayed and even payed for the alterations. I would highly recommend this shop to anyone seeking top notch service and great clothing!! read more

For years I walked by this store, impressed by the clothes in the window, but assuming it was too expensive for me. I finally walked in, and - wow - I haven't gone to another clothes store since. There are cute, moderately priced casual clothes, and elegant, unique work items that draw endless comments from impressed friends and strangers every thime I wear them! Worth every penny for the sheer joy I get wearing them - again and again (great values!!). I had been a very practical, no-nonsense, safe dresser, but Betsy and her team have transformed my wardrobe and my attitude towards dressing so that I now find it FUN! I LOVE my shoes & clothes from BF. I am confident in every outfit I have bought there. I will never shop anywhere else! Thank you Betsy and team!!! read more

My favorite boutique in DC. Fantastic customer service. Betsy and her team have a great eye -- I work in a conservative industry and they find things for me that are professional, but also creative and fun. Don't miss the Gambler's sales -- you can find some terrific bargains. read more

BF has a nice variety for such a small place. If you stumble upon one of their sales, consider yourself lucky. The discounts can be fantastic (70%). The staff is friendly and unimposing..definitely worth a visit. read more

Betsy Fisher is my go-to store for sharp and stylish clothing, and I have been shopping there for over 35 years. Couldn't agree more that most of that has to do with Betsy herself. She loves picking the best selection of designer clothes each season for her customers, and personally travels to where the designers have their studios to do so. I frequently use the store's shop-at-home service; the staff is very talented in rounding up possibilities for day or nighttime wear, and always find items that work. Betsy is passionate about getting a wonderful range of fabulous clothing for her customers, and she succeeds! read more

I regretfully have shopped here. As a small business advocate and resident of the Dupont area, I was excited to support a seemingly community oriented store. Unfortunately, this establishment contradicts everything a small business should represent. The owners lack integrity and consideration for customers. You can expect unwarranted bombardment from Betsy. She is clearly only looking to sell as opposed to actually pleasing a client and listening to their needs. I implore everyone I come in contact with to avoid this store, and I look forward to the day I can drive up Connecticut Avenue and no longer see Betsy Fisher signage. read more

I always love to stop by this store. I have bought some things here that have served me extremely well over years of wear. I don't tend to spend a lot on clothes, so I don't buy a lot of things here, but when I do, I'm very pleased. And as others have said, the sales staff is great. You're not going to buy your whole wardrobe here but you'll find some great, special things and enjoy the process. read more

I have shopped at Betsy Fisher over the years since it's across from my office. More notably than the fashion offered there, was the customer service. However, after the last couple visits, I feel that things have changed. The atmosphere was not welcoming and uncomfortable. read more

I created a yelp account just to be able to write this. I just got off the phone with Betsy. Her boutique is marvelous--creative, friendly and way, way beyond my usual budget. But I got a dress there for a family memorial service after looking many places. Her staff was empathetic and truly helpful, working within my budget. On the one hand, it doesn't matter what you wear to a funeral. On the other, wearing something I felt good in helped me hold on to the confidence to run the service. Great dress. The next day I discovered the dress had ripped--an obvious and hidden flaw in its construction and nothing Betsy could have known about. Two months passed while I dealt with the aftermath of the family tragedy. I finally called her today. No receipt. Two months later. "Oh I'm so sorry," she said. "That is unacceptable. Send it back and we will refund you. I don't want you to have any stress about this." I've found during recent hard times that small, compassionate, human encounters such as these make the days bearable. It's also just good business: I'll definitely return to the store because I was treated fairly and with respect. Thank you, Betsy Fisher. read more

I used to live Betsy Fisher. I used to go in often, talk to the sales staff who worked there (those ladies were fixtures, the three of them who were there for years, and they all exited within a year or two of each other, sadly). I never felt like I wasn't as special if I didn't buy something, either, since I wasn't looking to monopolize the salespersons' conversation or time with other customers. I was there on slow days, though, so we built up a friendship. Betsy was nice, would come out of the back, would call me by name. I visited a few times in recent years, after the staff turned over, but it's not the same vibe. Nobody tries to ask if I need help, nobody really makes conversation, and even Betsy looked at me as though she was seeing a ghost and said, "Oh, long time no see!" then walked away. Nobody wanted to know if this would be one of the times I buy something, since I own hats, belts, scarves, camis, sweaters, and yes, even skirts and tops from them! Wow. But, not everyone wants to make a purchase every single time. I just miss the people who used to work there, in that the replacement folks don't seem to know me at all or want to get to know me, on those same slower days. It does have some beautiful merchandise, but I just want it to have that same, personal feeling again! read more

I have been shopping at Betsy Fisher since they opened in the 1980's. They were amazing then and they have only gotten better and better. First, Betsy is a remarkable woman with the best fashion eye I have ever seen. She can read you and pick out the best ideas that will work on you and the items will last and last. Quality is tops here. Second, the shop is a showcase and has excellent lighting so you can really see what you're getting. Everything is well displayed and you never get that pressured feeling either. Third, they actually serve you drinks, sometimes food, and hold events, so you feel like you're being welcomed into a little community. And fourth, the sales staff is fantastic! They are all expert at helping you look your best. In fact, they won't let you buy something that doesn't look wonderful on you! I go there whenever I come back to D.C. for a visit and look forward to a warm greeting from everyone there. read more
