For within DC, this thrift store has a large selection and decent prices. They've fit a ton of items in a small space, especially shoes. I never really figured out the organization while I was here. They use size tags, but I think it's to split up section, not actual sizes? Or they do use them for sizes but items were very misplaced... The low lighting also made it difficult to look at the items sometimes. However, the prices were great, they have a wide variety of items, and I liked that there were changing rooms there. I had saved this place to checkout sometime and it was not what I expected. Maybe certain times of year or month they have better stuff. It's very small compared to places I have been in Montgomery County, MD. Nice to see a decent Men's section as this is often lacking. I've been spoiled by Atlanta area thrift stores that offer comparatively low prices. Washington, DC is a pricey place to thrift, but knowing that, Frugalista still feels outrageous. Don't get me wrong, the collection of items is pretty solid, with brand representation from places like Loft, Banana Republic, Zara, etc. But if you've ever bought clothes at the actual storefronts for these brands, you know the kinds of price points they sell at... and the markdowns for clearance items. I refuse to buy seasons old clothing at thrift stores that cost higher than the in store, final sale prices. I mean, why on earth would I buy used if it's more expensive than new? The only exception, I feel, is when you have cool vintage pieces. But I don't think Frugalista is necessarily catering to the vintage crowd, nor the frugal crowd. read more

Prices are a couple dollars more than I want to spend per item but there are so many good items, you won't be disappointed. This was the first time I went to a thrift store and had a positive experience. I wasn't even looking to buy anything and snagged a couple things. For a small store, they manage to pack a lot in. A great selection of clothes, accessories, and shoes for women and men - spans athletic wear, work wear and cocktail/formal wear. Everything is well priced - I don't think I've seen anything over $30 and most things are in the $5-20 range. The selection is curated so you'll find mostly current items, a little bit of true vintage, and items are generally in good condition. And a smattering of parenting stuff comes through, like good-as-new diaper bags or other such things. Often has good sales. Just found a great condition Donna Karan dress for work marked down to $5. Not impressed. Although this place is one of the VERY few places in DC that come close to a "thrift store" many of their items are way overpriced for the condition that they are in. Aside from that, I had a terrible experience on 11/10/2019. I found a great pair of boots in the shoe section that were perfect for winter, in my size, and in decent condition. (As a girl with a big foot, when I find something, I get it lol). There were two signs on the walls stating "$13" for men's & women's winter shoes (winter is the key word here, keep reading). As I check out, I notice that the shoes rang up as $23 dollars instead of $13. I ask why are they $10 more than originally listed and proceeded to walk over to show the cashier & sales associate the obvious pricing and that $23 is NOWHERE displayed, written, or visible. As someone who has worked in retail for a number of years and has been in this situation plenty times with customers, I know that a true professional and/or representative of an establishment that honors providing good customer service, would resolve this situation with the side of the customer. However, Frugalista represents none of the aforementioned and I was severely disappointed with what was explained to me next. The sales associate said, in spanish, that SHOES are $13 and BOOTS are $23... Again, there is NO SIGNAGE to distinguish these two price points but moreover, what is the difference between shoes & boots if the original sign states "winter shoes?? Going off that logic, and looking at their inventory, their "winter shoes" consisted of open toe sandals, heels, and flats. Have you ever worn flats in the winter? Your feet literally freeze & all of your life choices are questionable up to that point-trust me lol. So, again, boots, the boots that I wanted to buy are very much winter shoes. Needless to say, I had to digress in that moment because, unfortunately I stopped taking Spanish back in the 7th grade and couldn't begin to translate my frustrations with the employees. Shame on Frugalista's lack of customer service, professionalism, and inapparent desire to keep a clientele. As someone who represents the thrifting community via blogs, sponsorships, and business partnerships, I will NEVER recommend this establishment to participate in future community activities. read more

I read the reviews before coming here with my mom over Thanksgiving Break and was hopeful since she enjoys thrifting. The store was clean, and every piece of clothing was on a hanger, nothing on the floors and no noticeable dust. But there were multiple items I saw that I had no idea why someone would donate them for others' use or why they were accepted/placed out on the floor for shoppers. There were shoes with no traction left and blouses with obvious wear. A lot of the clothes I looked at were worn, loose in the arms/neck, and probably would not fit right if tried on. Any name brand clothes I saw were from (my guess) the late 90s - early 00s, and not in a good way. I agree with other Yelpers that the prices were too much for the condition of the clothes. My mom managed to find a simple gray t-shirt dress and that was $18. I feel like we could've found something brand new at Target for that same price. Lastly, I was not uncomfortable but it felt weird that there was an older man just walking around the store aimlessly, obviously not shopping the whole time we were there. The cashier lady said something to him but he kept walking around the aisles. I eventually got the the impression they were related, but if he worked there, I was unsure why he was out on the floor not organizing the racks or anything. A frugalista is a lady with great fashion sense who doesn't spend a lot of money to look fabulous, so I was definitely intrigued when I came across this store today. The interior of the store is small and plain with a slightly musty odor. Women's clothes and shoes are on the left side of the store, while men's clothing and shoes are on the right side. Most of the women's clothes were from JCrew, Banana Republic, and Ann Taylor and there wasn't much variety in styles. Frankly, the clothes and shoes (both men's and women's) looked worn and outdated. This store lives up to its "frugal" title, but falls short of the "ista" label. read more

Total thrift shop gem in Mount Pleasant. I've found that DC doesn't have a ton of great thrift options, and many of the best places aren't the most obvious from the street view. Frugalista is that perfect spot for those of us who enjoy places like Village Discount (where my Chicago folks at) or other authentic "thrift" shops (not boutiques, not "vintage"). Frugalista is cleaner and better organized than say, a Goodwill, but endlessly more affordable than a place like Buffalo Exchange. They have a great selection of both men and women's wear, and they have fun specials (ex., BOGO sales) through the week. Definitely check them out! read more

Frugalista is my favorite clothing shop in all of DC! It's a very warm and friendly place. The prices are good, and they curate the second-hand items very well. I don't think I've bought clothes anywhere else for several years now. I've gotten men's pants, jeans, workout clothes, sweaters, dress shirts, shoes, winter coats, spring/rain jackets, belts, and casual clothes there since first discovering it about 4-5 years ago. You can go there to find things you need, or just browse and definitely find something you like. The joke in our family is that we go in looking for something in particular for my wife, but then I'm the one that walks out with 5 things. The same folks have been running the shop for years. They recently moved a couple doors south on Mt. Pleasant Ave, but they are still in the first floor of the same big building. And they are open during Covid, with safety precautions. I want to add that although purchasing items at Frugalista is absolutely amazing, there process for selling items back is not. They allow you to sell back clothes for store credit. However, there's one person who works at the store who decides if the items will get purchased or not. If they take it, you get a credit to the store. If you don't, you have 2 days to pick up your clothes or they will donate them to charity for you. The first time I tried to sell back items, they decided to pass. Except that I was selling back clothes that I had bought from Frugalista! So it wasn't clear how they decide what to take or not. That was confusing and frustrating. But, the second time I dropped off a bag of clothes, they never got back to me about the store credit. I went over to ask them about it, and since it was improperly put in the system, I couldn't get a credit nor could they find my bag of clothes. I would have been happy to donate them directly to a charity--that's not my frustration. It's that they have a flawed system for buying clothes from people and in the process, I was left without my original clothes and without a store credit. They aren't rude, it's just that their procedures as a store are lacking. I will not be donating/selling my clothes here again, though I will continue to shop at Frugalista. read more

I've gotten nice name brand dress shirts in great condition, and recently purchased a nearly new pair of dress shoes for work. The service here is also fantastic. Both Frugalista and the neighborhood appeal to low-income Latinos AND young people who more-often-than-not likely work for a not-very-high-paying non-profit. (Many to most Mount Pleasant residents fit those two descriptions. There are other people who live there and many older people.) The name Frugalista connotes something hipper than the store is. They deliver a solid, consistent, wholely unglamorous experience. The space has seen better days and the staff puts their time into the merchandise not atmosphere. I wouldn't bring snooty friends there. I go for basics like pants/shirts and might spend a few minutes looking at other items. They consistently have brands like Brooks Brothers, Banana Republic, and Calvin Klein for $10 to $15 in nearly new condition. At that price, I feel I can take a chance that a piece may not work out. I'll buy 5 or 6 pieces for the price of one department store piece, maybe practice my Spanish, and feel great if 4 of the pieces end up working out as wardrobe staples. read more

I've had really good luck with this place although now that I've been checking it out occasionally, there isn't a lot of turn over in a lot of the clothes. Basically, the store reflects DC and everyone in DC dresses the same and the clothes are starting to look the same. That said, I've gotten J Crew shorts and t-shirts for $7-9 and a pair of Seychelles wedges for $17. I dropped off two garbage bags of my own clothes - Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, etc - and got about $60 in store credit. The things they couldn't use I could pick up or they'd donate. I let them donate. It was kind of musty when it first opened but isn't anymore. It IS basically in the basement of an apartment building so what do you expect? I have been buying clothes from many different consignment places and Frugalista is at the top of my list. When I first walked by this store, I was expecting it to be one of those small neighborhood shops selling new items that look like they come directly from the 80's but I was happily surprised. I get most of my work wear from this store and the shoe selection is also very nice. I got a pair of leather BR boots in almost-new condition for 30 dollars and practically all my dresses and skirts come from there. If you are shopping for casual clothes or a special occasion, you may need to dig a little bit more or even check what they have over a longer period of time but I am pretty sure you can still find great pieces. Since my closet has greatly expanded due to the many trips I make to this store,I tried to donate some of my clothes and they told me that they do not take donations. They apparently get their clothes from a supplier that selects and prices the items. The pricing does seem a bit subjective where you can get a BCBG top for 7 dollars or an old Burberry trench for 13 dollars but a 5 years old banana republic dress for 30.... They however give promotions all year long and you often end up paying a lot less than what you expect, especially when you get many items. read more

If you're looking for pristine condition, brand-name shirts for men, this little store is perhaps one of the best places to shop on the East Coast. In terms of selection, it's as good (or better) as the Goodwill stores in Manhattan. Though the prices are a little higher ($13-$17, but the merchandise is in perfect condition), they often have deals like getting a third shirt for free, so the prices even out. I bought two shirts at $9 each the first time I came, but unfortunately I did not find anything I liked in my size--which is not usually hard to do given that I am an XS or S. I do agree with Majick that some of the clothing seems to be geared towards older women, especially since some of the styles and patterns don't really look good on my petite frame. I definitely will be back when I'm in the neighborhood, knowing that my success of buying clothes depends on the availability of sizes/styles that day. read more

Very disappointed in my experience here. The clothing here definitely requires you to search carefully. I spent a good hour and half in here but came out with a decent blazer. Definitely will be getting it tailored and the coloring is a little faded. Usually I wouldn't have glanced twice at it but after putting so much effort into finding something, I know I'd feel better knowing I didn't completely waste my time. The clothing here was very "old" looking, not vintage old, ran through the washer and dryer 10 too many times type of old. Also, I would maybe recommend this store to older women as the majority of the clothing was more of what I would see them wearing. Two stars for the friendly staff. It's hard to find good customer service in this city. Unfortunately the poor clothing selection, lack of decor, and weird smell kind of make me not want to return. read more

I dropped off two full bags of clothes to sell. They emailed saying they didn't want any and to come pick them up. When I arrived and asked for the bag, they brought out one bag with the other one inside. I told them they were both full bags and theres no way both could fit in unless items were missing. After the "manager" become instantly nasty with me, I asked who her the owner was and she replied with "F..K YOU". They clearly DO NOT know customer service. What is more effective? Came here on a Saturday and I was highly impressed! Staff is extremely friendly and kind. I will say if you are a woman and in NEED of work pants. THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO!
