We tried Swoon out again this week, to celebrate a friend's birthday. We had another bad experience, worse than the last time we ate here. Although the restaurant was only half full, it took the waitress a full hour to get our table menus and fill our water glasses. It wasn't her fault: one waitress was assigned to 24 people seated at a single long table. Whoever was in charge that evening couldn't be bothered to assign 3 or 4 waitresses to the birthday party? It took another 1/2 hour to get a couple of bottles of the house wine and some glasses on the table. The house wine was awful & vastly over-priced. Nobody asked if me or my husband if we wanted to place individual drink orders or cocktails. I would have loved a martini, but had a glass and a bottle of wine placed on the table w/o having the opportunity to order a cocktail or be asked if I wanted to order a drink. Again, this is the fault of management, not the harried single waitress who was doing her best to wait on our table plus some others. Ordinarily we would've walked out after not getting at least a glass of water and a menu after 15-20 minutes, but we were with friends and it would have been rude to leave (although some of the party did get up and go). We finally were able to place our orders after an hour & a half and were served about two hours after we sat down. A different waitress, not the one who took our orders, brought out the meals & had to march up and down the table asking "Who ordered the kale salad? Who ordered the risotto?" I ordered shoe string potatoes and a roasted beet salad w/ arugula & feta cheese. I was served about 10 minutes after everyone else: I had to ask for my salad three times. My shoe string potatoes were ice cold and stuck together. I asked for catsup, but was informed that "Swoon doesn't serve catsup". Four of us dived into the fries anyway, b/c by the time they arrived, we were starving. My salad was a disgrace: the arugula was not fresh, the crispy onions were cold, the beets were not fully roasted and cold, there was only a small crumble of feta cheese and no dressing. None. I tried to find the waitress, but gave up and ate, b/c I was so hungry. My husband ordered a medium rare hamburger w/ videlia onions, which came sans onion and was almost raw; he couldn't finish it. He said the tater tots accompanying the burger were greasy and also cold. He was also told that there was no catsup available for his burger. Never heard of that: no catsup for hamburgers? How pretentious can you get? We were just happy that due to previous experience, we didn't bother with the expensive entrees. All in all, a badly prepared, overpriced meal and a big waste of $$. Our share was almost $70, for cold french fries, an undercooked hamburger and a poorly prepared salad without the dressing, plus a glass of (rotten) house wine and a beer. As a big plus, we both got sick later that evening. I don't understand all the five star reviews. We've eaten here three times and have never had food that was even decently prepared, let alone worthy of the high prices that this establishment charges or it's reputation of being one of the better restaurants in the area. The service was sweet, but unprofessional. One would think the owners would train & supervise their staff and the chef would, at a minimum, remember to dress the salad and send out properly cooked food while it's still warm. Even a diner can handle a good burger & fries, served hot. With catsup. Next time a friend has a party at this place, we'll beg off. Three strikes and you're out. read more
