The employees are nice whenever I visit and usually have hot pretzels when I go which is what I like with extra butter. So I was excited to see the pretzel-making kit that will allow me to make Ben's Soft Pretzels at home. I also grabbed a pretzel for the long drive north to head home since the normal route is now plagued with detours, road closures, or traffic due to the first two situations. The bar dining area had voluminously tall ceilings, oversized light fixtures, and an atrium atmosphere with enormous windows well above our heads. There were also taxidermied moose heads that seemed minimal in the large space. All waitstaff were welcoming and helpful. My server, Noemi, was fantastic and with answering questions about the menu and also provided a much appreciated warning regarding the spicy mustard! A complimentary warm pretzel was served along with cheese sauce and the aforementioned mustard. One dip made my sinuses scream, but was addictive in careful doses going forward. After a brief conversation about the different beers, I ordered a draft Ragged Company Hazy IPA from Big Lug Brewing. It was the perfect hoppy, citrusy mouth bomb I wanted on a beautiful, sunny, crisp fall day! I ended up taking a four-pack home as well. I loved it! Since I had never been to this restaurant before, and I always ask my server for recommendations, I asked Kristen to share some of her favorites from the menu. She was eager to help and very knowledgeable about the entire menu. I chose the brisket grilled cheese with a side of hot honey Brussels sprouts. Both were spot-on and delicious. The brisket was smoky, flavorful, and tender. The Texas toast on the sandwich was perfectly crunchy and golden. I even had some crispy pieces of toasted provolone around the edges of my sandwich, and they were heaven! The sandwich came with two dill pickle slices on the side. I asked for extra pickles to cut through the richness of the sandwich, and they were promptly brought to me. My table was already equipped with the restaurant's three barbecue sauces in a caddy, and I enjoyed sampling them as well. I don't usually like Carolina-style barbecue sauce, but the tanginess of the mustard-based sauce went really well with my sandwich. I also enjoyed the Cola BBQ sauce. The Texas-style sauce almost seemed as though it had been sitting in the sun too long. I think one possible improvement would be to place shaded caddies on the tables when people sit down instead of leaving them in full sun. I wonder whether the heat could alter the flavor of the barbecue sauces over time. When I finished eating, I ordered a side of chili to go after asking Kristen whether it contained beans--which it does. I'm a beans-in-my-chili girl! I ate the chili later that night and it was delicious so I would highly recommend it. I asked Kristen whether the toppings--shredded cheddar, diced white onion, sour cream, and fresh jalapeño slices--could be packed separately so I could heat the chili and add the toppings at home. I also asked for portion cups of each of the barbecue sauces to go. I could only finish half of my sandwich and wanted to enjoy it again at home with the variety of sauces. Kristen made sure everything was packed exactly as I requested, including the chili toppings and all three barbecue sauces. I also took home a 'Nilla Banana Pudding Cup. I'd asked Kristen to recommend either that or the Strawberry Cornbread Cup. She recommended the 'Nilla, and I went with her suggestion since she definitely hadn't steered me wrong on anything else! I did like the banana pudding cup, but I think it could be improved with homemade custard/pudding and homemade whipped cream. It was still tasty when I had it at home after refrigerating it for a couple of hours, but I would definitely say it's best eaten at the restaurant rather than ordered as takeout. The whipped cream quickly deflated since it isn't homemade. The flavors were still good, though! There wasn't a hint of artificial banana flavor in the dessert--which is something that bothers me a lot--so my mouth was happy. The texture of the layers was also good. This dessert could be elevated from good to great--and become something that "reminds me of Grandma's"--with homemade custard and whipped cream. Just sayin'. Half Liter Beer & BBQ Hall is a GREAT find, and I'm already excited to go again! I know it will be a favorite for years to come.
