I've been going to sweetleaf since the day they opened. I'm a total coffee snob, and am VERY particular not only about the coffee beans that are used, but also how the beans are ground, measured, tampered, steamed. If you let espresso sit for longer than 30 seconds, it becomes acidic and disgusting. Therefore it needs to drank immediately or neutralized with milk, milk alternative (sweetleaf has soy and almond!), or water. They use Red Fox beans, which are roasted in house, which are so much better than silly Stumptown which is over saturating the market just like Starbucks.
So obviously, I'm SUPER PICKY about my baristas. I won't let just anyone make my coffee, but I trust every single barista at Sweetleaf to take the time to make the espresso properly. If it isn't up to my ridiculously high class standards, I'll ask them to remake it. It's happened twice. Both times with new employees. They were extremely accommodating, happy to learn, and had great attitudes about it. I respect those personality traits SO MUCH.
Recently, Sweetleaf had a huge employee turn over -- which I think was good, because there was definitely a really awful individual working there. That person is thankfully gone now and has been replaced with such wonderful, talented and kind people. I've had some conversations with the manager (he's so friendly and nice!!) and with the conversations we've had, it's obvious that he has worked so hard to make this place a warm, inviting community space in Greenpoint. And that's exactly what it has become. I appreciate all of the hard working people at Sweetleaf SO MUCH. They're really great, talented baristas and individuals. They aren't there for a "college job" they're there because the LOVE coffee and working with people. It shows in their craftsmanship and the way they interact with others. Did I mention they're really great?! They're really great. So great. The greatest.
All of their specialty drinks are AMAZING. Rocket Fuel is a must try for those who like to be well caffeinated. So is the strawberry iced tea (I like to put milk in mine, but I'm weird.) All of their teas are brewed perfectly on point. My English godmother would approve - which says a lot.
I love walking in there and seeing the owner and other employees working on new brew and concoctions. He'll have 16 or so cups of coffee sitting out on a big table - experimenting and perfecting every last drop. I have so much respect to people who are SO DEDICATED to their craft.
Thank you, Sweetleaf, for being such a shining, warm, loving, space. You've enriched my life and caffeine addiction entirely. I look forward to every drink to come!!!
The only thing I wish they'd do differently is have later hours. There is no where to go in Greenpoint past 8pm for coffee. It would be so amazing if they were open until 10pm or 12am or even later!! So many people have told me they wished that were the case. So hopefully sweetleaf will take that into consideration! It would also be cool to run an open mic there. So many possibilities! I think I'll go there now.
XO
