Friday morning at 8:30am - Early for the bus, I quickly searched for a cafe and found Black Brick. It was much closer than expected, and easily missed if you're not looking for it. Props for having a ramp, whether that was intentional or not. The place is rather dark, not exactly my vibe to stay and work but I'm here for the coffee. I did note the laptop free table I waited by. Ordered a blueberry crumb muffin and a croissant, and two lattes to go. The muffin texture was more like a corn muffin. This was the best coffee in new yoek in my opinion. Not only was it really flavorful but the prices were great and the atmosphere was as well. I have been going to this shop alot lately and I love the New Hampshire woodsy vibes here! The community tables are fun and the matcha is top notch along with all the other coffee drinks. I stopped in on a Friday afternoon to get some work done and was surprised when I realized where it was located because I walk on Bedford most days and never knew this place existed. Inside is old school dark vintage vibes. Definitely a coffee shop good for doing work at. I ordered a flat white and it was very good, my issue here is that I did not love the service. You can definitely miss this place from the outside, since it's exterior would not be presumed your typical coffee joint. Luckily, a friend pointed out "lavender latte" from a chalk board out front. You had me at lavender! Which brings me to the latte itself- it's freaking delicious with the perfect hint of sweetness that does not overpower the beautiful essence of lavender, topped with creamy foam of your dreams. For reference, this place is just across from Springbone, which is the reason we were parked out front to begin with. Parking is hit or miss. If you live closer, just bike or walk over. I recently went back to Black Brick to give them another chance. This time, I was way more impressed with taste and quality than the first time. I also got my drink in a glass this time which definitely helped. The Cortado tasted great and presented well. The only issue was I went there to do some work and all of the tables where you were allowed to use a laptop were taken. There were 2 communal tables where no laptops were allowed so I drank my coffee there. I totally get why they don't allow laptops at those 2 communal tables. I wanted to like this place. And in fact, I did, the one other time I visited prior. It is a quaint coffee shop with a decent (overpriced but typical for brooklyn) latte. But unfortunately it has arbitrary segregation of table usage that detracts from the entire point of a coffee shop. This time around, I bought another fine latte and some bread, and sat down at the front table with my laptop. I'd been working no more than 5 minutes, minding my own business and not bothering any other patrons, when the barista comes over and turns a table card holder pointedly in my direction without saying a word. The card said "weekends: laptop free." That felt pretty passive aggressive, and the patron across from me actually said so out loud to me. But, fine, I respected this "rule of the shop" -- I moved to the back table where laptops *are allowed*, and found a space. There was no chair, though, so I grabbed the stool from the first table -- which no one else was waiting to sit in. There were plenty of other seats in the shop. Yet as I was moving it over to the back table, this same barista yelled at me to return the stool back. I asked her where I could work with my laptop, if I could not sit at a free table because it was "laptop free" and could not sit at the back table because there weren't enough *specific* chairs apparently assigned to that table. She just shrugged and kept insisting like she was reading off a script that I could not move the "front table stool" to the back table. It is pretty asinine that patrons who purchase food and drink are not allowed to work on their laptops at a free table when they are not bothering anyone else, simply because the shop has some unfounded discrimination between tables. And baristas who don't show a modicum of humanity to others who are just trying to quietly get some work done. Will not be revisiting. read more

Extremely rude owner/manager. The coffee shop we were at before didn't have any seating. One of the three of us had a drink that was 1/4 left. As soon as we walked in the owner said "If you're gonna go in and sit, I need you to throw that away." I think this is fine. Came here for coffee one morning. No syrups only the couple they choose to carry, which were lavender and something else. We learnt while in NYC a lot of coffee stores choose not to carry syrups as it's about the coffee. They had honey on the condiment bar, so I went with that. No syrups but you can have your choice of milk. I like the sippy cups lids, so you don't have to use a straw. They were happy to fill our water bottle for us as well. read more

My friend R. and I visited Black Brick for a caffeinated pick-me-up to fight my post-Europe jet lag. I had a zingy cold brew that brought life back into my eyes while R. had a latté brewed with "adventure" single-origin beans. I had a few sips of her drink - true to the barista's description, it was fruitier, brighter, and more acidic than typical brew blends (such as their "safari" beans). I'd recommend it for espresso but would probably advise you to stick with the safari blend for anything containing milk. The patio in the back is ridiculously cute, and recently the owner removed the restriction on using laptops outside (tbh, surprised that was even a thing) so feel free to set up shop with the cacti when the weather is nice! Some other areas are still designated "no laptop" so make sure there's actually seating that you can use if you're trying to come here to work. Prices are what you'd expect for Williamsburg, but by no means outrageous. A definite recommend. read more

The barista was incredibly patient with us and made several suggestions. Everyone, all 7 of us, ordered different drinks and only one was a little off. However, the lighting is a tad bit too dim in my opinion; especially in the bathroom where you can barely see your face. The prices are fair but the card minimum can be a bit (and understandably) annoying for customers. Most things will be just under $5 so you'll have to purchase a pastry which there is a very limited quantity of. The drip coffee was good and bold in flavor. It had a smoky note to it. I also noticed the table I sat at was a laptop-free zone. I think this is a very interesting concept that surprisingly people here enforce. I love to stop at this coffee shop before I arrive at the office. The staff is always cheerful and welcoming and it makes you feel like you are being invited in by a friend. I usually order the matcha ginger latte or the matcha coconut latte and a pastry to help start a long day of listing appointments and market research. If you are walking down bedford and need a coffee shop that serves great coffee and will not have you waiting forever then this is your must try place. I visited Black Brick while trying to kill some time before a dinner I was attending in the area. The coffee shop is unassuming on the outside but when you step inside you'll definitely be surprised. I arrived around 5:30 on a Monday evening and was glad to see it wasn't too crowded. The space is more long than it is wide and has a lot of seating both in the front and in the back. It gives off a more recycled wood type of vibe so it feels authentic and genuine given how it's decorated. When I made my way to the bar to order I was warmly greeted by the barista and asked what I'd like to order. I decided to go with their standard cold brew and when I went to pay with a card they informed me that it was a $5 minimum. I opted to add an extra shot of espresso to bring the total up to $5. While I was here I also used the restroom and came to the realization that they definitely need to clean it more often. Their were paper towels littered on the floor and the trash can was completely stuffed. The lighting in there was also way too dim! Overall this is a pretty chill coffee spot on southern bedford. It's definitely quiet and the type of place you can comfortably read a book at and/or get some work done on a laptop. I'd recommend knowing what you'd like to order before coming and bring cash if it'll be less than $5. read more

Black Brick has been in the neighborhood for quite some time and has a lot of regulars and people who like to come and work for vast amount of hours. However, that is what makes this place so great! Once you've found a spot to sit and unwind, you've got yourself a co-working space! But I'm not promoting that. This hipster coffeeshop has great coffee and now accepts card!!! There is also a hidden backyard to hangout which is especially great for summer time. They sell some local baked goods and various drinks for the coffee fiend. The ambience is somewhat peaceful; they usually play somewhat loud music, so bring headphones if needed. Lots of seating. Can get packed! Accepts card. Charming little shop in Williamsburg that makes a good cup of coffee! Really adore the space itself - I'm a sucker for exposed brick, and love the dark grained wood that's used throughout the space and ceiling. The place is also furnished with vintage pieces, like the retro refrigerator and the old school typewriter. Decent amount of seating, and the free wifi makes the place conducive to reading or getting some work done. Baristas are friendly, and they accept CC which is always a plus. Oh, and they brew Stumptown here and make great drinks. The staff, space, and clientele just ooze a coolness and a Bohemian vibe that seems a bit more homey than the more sterile/newer coffee shops in the area (e.g. Blue Bottle, Toby's Estate, Devoción - not to say I don't love those places). There are some outrageous items on display. I choose a cookie and ask if American Express is ok. The counter person looks at me like I had 3 heads, I tell her I'm kidding.
