I am sure the only reason this place is still in business is because of its location across from the broadway theatre. When you are paying for a $35 meal, you at least expect warm rolls. I will say the staff was very nice. I ordered the duck breast for $35. The breast was four inches in length and mostly fat. The amount of meat was minimal. My mate ordered chicken Marsala, again $35 (different from online menu). The chicken was a tough chew. Who has tough chicken in restaurants. The mashed potatoes were tasteless. We ate at Lulas for the first time last night. The ambiance was nice, seats around 70 and the place was packed. The restaurant is across the street from the Pitman Broadway Theatre. They have a huge screen in back playing cartoons, old style Warner Bros, daffy duck, sylvester can etc, minus the sound. The Food was Excellent and Plenty. Our server as were the other 2 servers were extremely busy, probably could have used 2 more servers, in light of this fact we did get our food in a relatively good time, we did however wait some time to get our check, not complaining but I guess this would have prevented more seating of patrons. We dined at Sweet Lulas On a Saturday night. We arrived at 5:45 to have a leisurely dinner before a show. The charming owner, Anthony, greeted us and made us feel very welcome. The menu is so extensive for such a small restaurant that I found it difficult to choose. We had the incredible Brussels sprouts to start. I seriously think Anthony started the Brussels sprout trend as I had them for the first time at Sweet Lulas years ago at a private party. We ate here Saturday night before a show with a large group. The place was packed and I don't think they were prepared for the crowd. I arrived after my party was seated and waited quite a while before I could get my bottle of wine opened. The waitress was pleasant although frazzled and service was slow. We ordered our food and I was not impressed. My crab cakes were very bland and tasted as though they were straight out of a box. My friend got the crab crusted salmon which was very good. I was still enjoying my dinner until... When I returned from using the ladies room, my friends all yelled for me not to sit down. While I was gone the waitress accidentally spilled a glass of red wine all over my chair, my new jacket, the wall and it splashed onto the shirts of two other people seated. The waitress did not come over to me and explain or apologize. The wine was not cleaned up, there was a puddle on my chair with a napkin thrown on it. The waitress also left a wet napkin on the table for me to clean my jacket. I went up to a woman with blond hair & an accent, I'm assuming she was the owner or manager and I explained what happened. She said, well she gave you a wet towel and I said, yes she did and now I have a soak and wet jacket that smells like wine and she said, "Well what do you want me to do, I don't have a hair dryer." Not kidding, that is a quote. I don't care how busy you are, this is horrible customer service and not the way you handle ruining someone's clothing even if it is an accident. She then said something to the waitress but I couldn't hear it and the waitress threw her hand in the air and yelled she was not paying for it. I told the woman they should at least pay for me to get it dry cleaned and she said, yeah okay send me the bill and walked away without even giving me her name. We were not offered a discount, dessert, not even an apology. The WORST PART is that because we were a large party, gratuity was included which is why I think the waitress (with the lavender tinted hair) did not give a crap about us. I originally had dinner here years ago, but don't really remember what I had. I do remember it being busy though. It's pretty cool they show old black and white shows on a screen at the back of the restaurant while you eat. So my wife and I had dinner here last Friday night. I made reservations for 7 just in case it was busy. It was fairly busy when we arrived, but we were seated quickly. We checked out the menu and it seemed a bit pricey. We placed our order and it arrived hot and in a timely manner. We had Chicken Marsala Oscar and Crab Cakes. Both were very good although we felt the Crab Cakes were a little heavy on the filler and a little light on the Crab. Would we come back? We'll probably give lunch a shot. read more

Came here on a Saturday night with my boyfriend's family. They had all been here a few times before, but this was my first. We had reservations for 645 and were seated at 7. The place was packed, as there's a theater across the street and there was a show at 8. The place itself is very cool - one big dining room with an open kitchen and a projector screen showing old time cartoons. The whole place is theater themed (which makes sense - it is on Broadway!) and the ambiance is very cool. Our service throughout the night was slow, but to be honest I think our waitress was the only one serving the entire dining room with a few food runners. She did apologize for not checking in very often. So the slowness was not on her- she was great! The place seemed wildly understaffed for a busy Saturday night. Appetizers - THE BRUSSELS SPROUTS. Get them! Deliciously fried and flavored with paprika. The calamari was okay- would not order again. Mains - two of us ordered Basa Florentine and two ordered the duck. The basa was good and came with veggies and rice. Just what I expected and I was definitely satisfied. The duck eaters said it was delicious but slightly over cooked, which they attributed to how busy it was. Overall the food was delicious! My dinner companions even said that of all the times they had been to Sweet Lula's this particular time was not quite as good as the others- I can't imagine how great the food is on a "good" night! I'd recommend coming at a time that isn't quite as busy- during the week or on a weekend night when there isn't a show (or after the show already starts). Took my wife and my 2 youngest to Sweet Lula's last night for my wife's birthday. It was our first time there and I was anxious to go after hearing great things about it. We were seated pretty close to our reservation time. 20 minutes later, we had to ask one of the bus boys to send over a waitress.....not sure where they found this one but she was horrible. Over the next hour, we had to flag her down to take our order, bring us an ice bucket for our wine, remind her to bring the kids drinks, bring us some bread.....As all of this was going on, there were two separate couples that came in, sat in her area for 20 minutes with not even a "hello" and left, opened wine bottles in hand. About an hour into our experience, the bus boy came over again and asked if he could get us anything.....I thought it was a joke......yes, son, anything would be nice at this point....... After an hour and a half, our waitress excitedly informed us that she put a rush on our food with the chef because she knew the kids were hungry....do ya think? All we keep hearing from the kids is "I told you we should have gone to Olive Garden!" We finally got our food and I'll be completely honest here.....it was amazing! The pork tenderloin and mashed potatoes were out of this world. My wife had the crab cake and it was decent but didn't compare to the pork. Am I planning on going back? I think I'll give it another chance, only because the food was so awesome. However, if I'm seated in a certain waitress' section I'm walkin' out. BTW - as we're leaving over 2 hours after arriving, we notice that the table of 4 next to ours still didn't have their food.....maybe they should bring their kids next time!!! The atmosphere is from a bygone era as there is always a black & white film being projected onto one of the walls, and the white decor keeps the place simple and sterile. We were partly to blame since our total party did not arrive until then. Our menu selections were taken. After 50 minutes, my son had to get up, find our server and ask for a drink order ( sodas and teas) to be taken. Parties that were seated after us were served appetizers (the same that we hadv ordered- Brussels sprouts) before us. When questioned as to how long it was going to be before our food was served, the server could not give us an answer. It had now been well over an hour. When we attempted to speak to the owner/manager, she was unable to do so because she was busy singing. I've been to Sweet Lula's so many times over the years that I can't count. I used to love it when they were open for breakfast. It was a lovely atmosphere and usually quite crowded. The wait staff was very prompt and service was quite quick. Unfortunately, one day without notice.... Breakfast service was cancelled... And they forgot to tell the customers. I was sad but I moved on... The service here is spotty. The food is about what I can cook at home... No better no worse. The prices are too much for the quality of what one gets served. I'd rather go to TERRANOVA on Delsea Drive for the prices Sweet Lula charges. I'm not of fan of all the miss matched thrift shop furniture... Or for that matter sitting on old cushions. If you like to watch old black and white movies while you're eating this is you place. I had been a loyal customer for many years and came here frequently. Wasn't treated very nicely after I prepaid for an event - I paid for 4 and was rudely told by the older woman greeter that I had to sit in an quite uncomfortable area for 3 in the middle of dining area while there were empty tables that would have been much more comfortable for our party. Was told she was owner so nothing could be done. Paid for a table for 4 while and sat at a table for 3. No refund of course because that would be too much like polite. Funny, I sang the praises of this restaurant and came here often with friends and family. We looked forward to this event. Why don't people treat their customers well? Won't be back. I see some other reviews complaining about the service and I could not feel more differently! As we ate our food, the owner regaled us with tales of mystery and mayhem from the set of The Labyrinth. If you have never eaten pasta while a man tells you about shooting a scene with puppets while trying to discreetly hide the bulge in David Bowie's pants, you have not lived! My only complaint was that I couldn't find the bathroom and ended up upstairs being told a riddle by 2 weird guys, each claiming the other was a liar and that they were the correct door. read more

We dined here prior to seeing the current show at the Pittman Theater on November 3rd. The restaurant was crowded - noisy and poorly ventilated. Although the kitchen staff worked hard, food was slow in coming from kitchen to table. The food was acceptable at best. ( Crab cakes tasted like fish cakes.) The largest issue was with the cleanliness in and around the restroom area. Dirty linens, glassware, soda cans and general untidiness surrounded the area used for hot beverage preparation. We wondered about acceptable sanitary conditions. The unisex restroom was dirty, and the line waiting was as long as 4 people at one time. We have eaten here before and the conditions were better than this time. Not sure what changed, but we'll eat elsewhere next time we're in the area. read more

Well what can I say about this place.. the good, the bad, and the ugly.. that is this place. My review is based on at least 10 visits. Let me start by saying, excellent food. Never had a bad meal. On the other hand the worst service and customer experiences can happen here. The cook really needs to leave if he is not an owner because he is the only one who makes this place. My last visit was just that, my last! After bragging about the food to family, I bought them to this place after a play. I was absolutely embarrassed and mortified about bringing them! It was after a children's matinee and we walked over. We were the only ones in the restaurant and were sat way over to the one side of the restaurant. I couldn't imagine why we would be sat off to the side like that. Well after a few minutes it became clear. After order drinks, and food we got a whiff of a very strong oder, we had no idea what it was. When we were brought our drinks, soup, and salads, we asked the waitress what the smell was. She pretended not to know or smell anything. While eating, one of my party tells me to lean over and look. Look I did! You will not believe me, so I will post pictures! It was our waitress dying someone's hair! Yes, in the middle of the restaurant! That was the odor, hair dye! Not only was she dying some woman's hair, at one point with no gloves on going through her hair, she put down the brush, without washing her hands, picked up our plates and brought our food! I asked when they started a hair salon in there. Her response, it's an emergency dye! Like WTF! No apology at all! So if you ever need an emergency hair dye this is your place, and hey get some food too! Came in at the tail-end of the lunch shift on a Saturday and just had a fantastic meal and overall experience as a whole. The food was fantastic (the crab avocado appetizer was amazing), the service was spot on and not rushed. And we ended up spending 3 hours in the place and I usually get antsy around 2 so I was surprised how much time had gone by. Excellent pace, excellent service, excellent food. Seating was awful. Backs to an open kitchen that had to be at least 100 degrees. The cooks had to be on their last nerve, sweat pouring off their faces. Food was ok nothing special. Too high for a casual joint like this. $42 with tip for 3 of us. And my son had a grilled cheese sandwich with fries.... I'd expect to pay $6 or $7 bucks for that tops - not $10+. We had two wraps, $13+ each. And boy did they skimp on the fries. Jeezz, what's it cost to put a handful (not 10 fries) of fries on the plate???? I will give it one more try as others I know say its really good. But, when I go for dinner next time, the service better be faster, and the food better be more than just 'average', or it will be our last visit. read more

What a joke! My son & I Walked in for lunch at 12:30 with 2 other tables eating. Waited 10 minutes just to have order taken(place was empty) & then another 35 minutes to get food. Owners sat in back eating and even had a meeting with one of the cooks while we waited for our food. My son ordered the chicken tenders & fries. For $10 he received 3 tenders which actually were only a larger chicken nugget. The french fries were not cooked all the way through. I order fish tacos which was a fried piece of fish topped with a bed of wet red cabbage. I took two bites and it tasted like the frozen fish was completely cooked. Really disappointed! Never again if you can't get good service and food when slow I can't imagine what their like when it's busy. read more
