Usually this place was pretty good. They closed down for a while because of the virus and I was expecting their food to be their regular quality, but everything in my pad see ew was burnt this time. The noodles were burnt, the veggies were burnt, the egg was burnt. The chicken wasn't as burnt, but I definitely did not like the taste of charred food. Hopefully this was a fluke and it will be better next time. I'll post an update when I order it next. read more

Very good Thai food and overall dining experience. I ordered the coconut soup and a chicken pad thai; both were fresh and delicious. The coconut soup was a surprisingly balanced combination of sweet, savory, light and sour flavors. Pad Thai was missing a lime but noodles were juicy and chicken was of good quality. Prices were very fair and the waitress was sweet and attentive (as per the other yelp reviews). I was impressed and will be having it again for dinner tonight. read more

Pad see ew has a wonderful flavor, like it's right out of the wok! Drunken noodles have the same noodles, but it's spicy. Dancing noodles have the same noodles, but no spice, and sesame oil and seeds. The steamed mussels would simply make a wonderful soup on a cold day. There are many flavor layers to the broth and the mussels are HUGE! Chicken larb salad is my favorite, and if you drink coffee, then the Thai iced coffee is for you. Good place on a budget, good place for a date. You really can hit the trifecta eating on this block. Next door, the Indian restaurant is my favorite for Indian food, and there is a Mexican place next door to that. All great Woodside restaurants. read more

There are so many excellent Thai restaurants in the area, you wonder how they all stay in business! Sadly, Sweet Basil takes home the medal for the worst. Once, for a delivery order, they ignored a specific request I'd made to call a different phone number, AND then wrote MY number incorrectly. So we didn't get the order until everything was sorted out and our food had a thin layer of failure coagulated over it. I'm not going to judge them by our cold dinner that time, but I am disappointed I gave them another shot. This time, my tom yum was terribly balanced, came with sad, limp veggies (mostly discolored snowpeas and napa cabbage stems!), and tasted like a sour version of the watery tomato broth you'd get at a hospital following an operation. I get that tom yum is hard to make well, but if you're going to do it that badly, just leave it off the menu. (Note: Sripraphai's tom yum is quite good) The red curry noodle soup was too heavy on the coconut milk and will make you feel about 5 years closer to a cardiac event. An appetizer of nurr yang (sliced grilled beef with a fish sauce and garlic dipping sauce) was nothing special. Prices are the same as other Thai in the area, except getting anything other than vegetable or tofu in your entree costs extra. This rendition of Thai cuisine is maybe average for Wichita or something, but completely subpar for Queens. For great Thai close by, try Sripraphai. Or, Playground and Zabb Elee both deliver. If you're standing in front of Sweet Basil and just want your belly filled with something worthwhile, walk into Masala next door for great Indian food. Emphasis on worthwhile. read more

As many of my friends can attest to, I keep coming to Sweet Basil whenever I get a chance. There's something about here that stands out compared to the many Thai restaurants I have been to [which is A LOT by the way], from the warm, efficient, attentive service, to the consistency of the food quality, right down to the minute fact that they take American Express. My usual of crispy vegetable spring rolls, beef drunken noodles (has the right balance of chili seasoning), a side of rice, and a Thai iced tea to finish it off has yet to disappoint. Came across this place by accident, when my boyfriend and I were looking for a place for dinner. We ordered chicken satay and the Thai dumplings as appetizers. I got the drunken noodles as my entree and my boyfriend got the vegetable pineapple fried rice. I definitely got the better entree! But the fried rice wasn't bad, it just didn't have enough flavor or spice in my opinion. However, I would definitely recommend the drunken noodles! The portion was plentiful and my mouth was on fireeeee but in a good way...the chilis and spices were amazing. In addition to our great meal, our waitress was very attentive and friendly too. My co-worker recommended this place because I can handle Thai spicy and I was yearning for the sweet dishes of Chabaa Thai in SF. Luckily, on my first try, I found the perfect dish to satisfy me. I ordered the Roasted Duck with Panang curry with thai iced tea. You can have your dish with white rice or brown rice and I opted for brown rice. H-E-A-V-E-N!!!!!!! That first bite into my curry was AMAZING. It was kick in the mouth goodness! AND I was really surprised how generous they were with the roasted duck!!! The dish was nearly brimming with duck which I was suprised since most establishments stiff you on duck parts. The duck tasted fresh and was roasted to perfection and the sweet, spicy taste hit the spot. As I type this, I'm probaby going to get an order in half an hour! this place has great food. Unfortunately they have alienated us. My wife and I moved to woodside about 5 years ago and have been ordering delivery from them at least 4 times month (often times twice that) consistently. We called them tonight to order again and all of the sudden we are out of their delivery zone. The gentleman on the phone asked me how often we have ordered and I told him that we are regular and happy customers. To make along story short, he basically called me a liar on the phone. I told him that, as a VERY regular customer, if I was unable to get my food delivered tonight that I will NOT be calling them again. Unfortunately a loss on both of our parts. Of all the days..." I'm not familiar with Woodside and since she was from around the area, she asked a passerby who looked Thai as to where the closest Thai restaurant would be located. He told us to go to 61st Street and that we would find it near an Indian restaurant. It was around 5:30pm and we were one of the first to be there. The service was both splendid and attentive. The ambiance was simple and clean. Thai iced tea - good, but a little too sweet. Mix first. Thai chicken wings - crispy, but the only thing Thai about it seems to be the dipping sauce. I'd pick this over wings at any Chinese take-out though since they were meaty and tender. Green curry - bamboo shoots, basil, beef (our choice of meat), some type of potato, and spicy curry sauce. It didn't look appetizing, but it tasted much like a lot of other curries I've had. It's like a Honda Civic - good, but not great. Thai fried rice - we ordered it with chicken. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Thai fried rice is unique. It tasted like fresh-out-the-wok, homemade, fluffy...Chinese fried rice. This was a really good dish had it been advertised as Chinese food. I'm used to the slightly sweet, orange colored fried rice I've seen at a couple other Thai restaurants. Pad Thai - silky, delicate, delicious, well-balanced with sweetness and spiciness. In addition, the noodles don't stick together. The crushed peanuts and the bean sprouts were on the side so you can choose whether or not to mix them in. This was the second best Pad Thai I've had to date. My friend remarked that she's found a new winner and it's the best she's ever tasted. We went here last Wednesday (Oct 1) and I had to write a review. I'll try to be as unbiased as possible, which is difficult since I've been coming here for several years. Having sampled a multitude of pad thais at various thai restaurants in NYC, I can reliably rank this place's pad thai as among the most consistently well-made. It's also possible that since I'm a frequent customer the owners make a point of delivering excellent food whenever I make an appearance, but there's a reason why so many of my church friends come here as often as they do. I'm acquainted with people who collectively have had everything on the menu here, and so far no stand-out complaints. Many of us even prefer this joint over SriPraPhai a few blocks away, which is arguably the #1 thai restaurant in NYC. Part of it is due to the quality of the food, and another reason is because Sweet Basil provides spice/seasoning trays w/ choices of cayenne pepper, pickled peppers, etc... which my friends and I always use generously with our food (not because the food particularly needs it, but cuz our taste buds are whacked out like that). *Tip* Sometimes they don't automatically provide these spice trays, but just ask and they'll know what you're talking about ;D *Tip 2* They have a lunch special! Check both this and their yummy fried ice cream dessert out (once we just came in and pigged out on two fried ice creams in a row). One complaint I've recently had with this place is that whenever another table is eating something w/ fish sauce, the smell is so overpowering that I wanna run away, far away. A looong time ago my friends and I had lunch here and we set an entire napkin on fire by accident cuz we liked playing with the candle on our table. Do not repeat this incident. The interior is pretty dark and intimate, but large enough for groups to make a trek here for a festive thai dinner together. I admit I had high expectations for Sweet Basil. The past establishment, Khao Homm Thai, was regularly compared to Sripraphai, and I was hoping the name change didn't affect the food. We arrived shortly before 6 and already a couple was seated and waiting for their order towards the back of the restaurant. We seated ourselves near the front. Immediately in front of the restaurant was the opening down to the basement, and for one reason or another, someone kept entering and exiting from there; not that the post office was a better view. We ordered the hoi jor (minced ground crab meat and shrimp in bean curd wrapper, steam then fried) and fried calamari for the appetizers, and the pad thai and curry peanut sauce noodles for entrees. We each had a thai ice tea. The food was served timely, and were all steaming hot, but the taste was lacking. The calamari was fried with too much dough, leaving an oily aftertaste. The pad thai was too wet for my tastes, and consisted of some chicken pieces and egg with some bean sprouts and chopped peanuts on the side. After finishing the thai ice tea half way through the meal, we were not offered water or refills. Customers trickled in while we ate, but the restaurant was still 1/3 empty when the waitress asked if we were ready and packed the leftovers, delivering the check without being asked. As soon as we put the money down on the table, the waitress swooped in for it. It was overall a disappointing visit. read more

It's tough finding a good spot for take out or lunch in Woodside. It's pretty slim pickings out here. That said, desperate times call for desperate measures, and when lunchtime hunger calls and you realize your lunch has been thrown out by the cleaning staff, you get desperate. I had saved up this menu on my walks through the neighborhood and thought it was a good time to deploy the lunch special. It's about $7+change and has a pretty good selection, but oof, that portion is pretty small. Normally when you're getting take out you expect a big enough portion to last you through solidly one meal with a little bit left over for a bit of an afternoon snack. I can eat a pretty good deal and while this was really tasty, it was just not enough for me. If you like to eat, skip the lunch special and go for the full size. read more

I really enjoy this place. The service is nice and the ambiance is very quiet and calm. I've been coming here for about a year now and it's really become a regular go-to for my boyfriend and I. His favorite is the Beef Basil, which I really enjoy as well. I also like to get Chicken Basil, which is the same dish but made with chicken of course. Their Drunken Noodle is really great! Although, be sure to mention how spicy you want it. I know Drunken Noodle is supposed to be spicy but of all the Thai Restaurants where I've had this dish, this place by far has made it the spiciest! Cleared sinuses-spicy! A few other favorites: Thai Fried Rice, Pineapple Fried Rice, Papaya Salad, Fried Spring Rolls, Mango Salad, and their Thai Wings are really good as well! I also love their dessert menu. Although it's small, the few items they have are very tasteful. In particular the Mango Sorbet and the Fried Bananas served with vanilla ice cream, berry fruit sauce and drizzled honey!! Overall, I've really come to enjoy this gem. This local Thai place is tasty, inexpensive, and a strangely calming atmosphere. Stopped in for dinner with my sister this weekend and we picked a couple of appetizers and a main to share. Went with the steamed veggie dumplings, crispy spring rolls, and a chicken pad Thai. She doesn't have the most adventurous palate, so when I return I'll be trying dishes from all over the menu! They have a great selection of hot and cold appetizers, rice dishes, noodle dishes, and curries that all looked incredibly tasty. The crunchy spring rolls had a nice little kick to them thanks to a healthy dose of black pepper. They paired well with the provided dipping sauce, which was very similar to duck sauce, which I've always had a weakness for. The veggie dumplings were tasty, but a bit bland. The chicken pad Thai was plentiful and had a delectable sauce. I definitely could have and should have ordered one of my own. Even though it's located on Roosevelt Ave in Queens, it is quiet and calming inside. A nice urban oasis where you can eat and visit in a relaxed environment.
