Sutherlands is the home improvement store I want to love, but I'm not quite as into it as I'd hope to be. The good: The location is great, straddling that Brookside/Waldo line with easy parking and access. It's got that classic hardware store smell and vibe, and they will have more than a small hardware store (although no guarantees.) The rest: I've struggled to get real help when I come in here. I know that's almost a meme at this point for most people at Home Depot or Lowe's, but I find the same issue here. When I have tracked someone down, it's not always been the friendliest or most helpful. For the size, I'm just constantly surprised that they don't have quite what I'm looking for. I come away feeling like it's a wasted trip. I think it's a local store so I like that aspect, and will continue to pop in occasionally, but it's not quite as clutch as this kind of store should be in my opinion. read more

Sutherland's had a "big plant sale" about a week ago, and they were the most bedraggled, half-dead-to-dead, limp, wilted pile of semi-live "live" plants imaginable. None were even remotely worth the "sale" price. They were crammed together so tight on shelves too short for the plants they were crushing each other, and the shelves were too close together to navigate. When I asked the man watering the plants (and you, if you got in the way, which was easy to do cuz he was just shooting the hose around willy-nilly) "What happened?" he drolly replied "This wasn't the shipment we expected." He knew nothing about the plants and offered zero assistance. When I asked if the prices would be reduced further because the plants were so mangled, he replied "Don't think so." I had driven quite a ways to get there after calling and being told they still had a lot of plants left (on the last day of the weekend sale...my bad!), and after searching over an hour in the plant junkyard/obstacle course for anything even remotely good to salvage my trip, I felt as wilted as the sad little hanging basket I left with! read more

I needed some gloves for work that were in short supply due to Covid19. This location showed that there were two boxes in stock, so I called and gave them the SKU to make sure they were there. They physically checked and said that they were indeed in stock, so I finalized the order. A couple of hours later they called and said they did not have them. I told them that they were verified and paid for, but they again said they were not. That should never happen in retail. read more

I hate to only give Sutherland three stars because they are oh so close to home and have bailed me out of many home improvement crises with that one needed part. However, the service is slow, not particularly friendly, and prices are high. Sutherlands isn't somewhere I go and grab a cart and buy everything for a project. But it is great for something I need in a pinch. read more

Sad that a neighborhood brand has the worst service in town. I needed a few items and walked the entire store being passed by at least 3 employees that walked past me with no acknowledgment or "anything I can help you find". I finally found what I needed (key word need), otherwise I would have left. The cashier at the register barely spoke and then looked all of my items and said "do you need a bag" with multiple items it's obvious I would need one. I of course thanked her and got nothing in return. I guess my thank you was thanks for making my decision to never shop here again. Needless to say this won't be my neighborhood store which is sad, since moving down to this area I see signs not wanting big boxes and keep it small and local. Worst service ever!! Every time I come here I have to interrupt a group of workers chatting just to get help. The response this time, "Um 16 or 17 maybe." Then right back to their chatting. Everyone here should have been fired months ago. I have no idea how they are still in business. read more

0 stars rating. Advisory...do NOT purchase landscaping plants, shrubs, tree, shrubs, flowers, or garden plants from Sutherlands. They are NOT returnable if they go bad unless you pay the full retail price. If you want to return the plant if it by chance perishes, you'll need to deny the sale price at the register and pay full retail price. My experience.... this year I decided to try purchasing some azaleas from Sutherlands as I normally shop there, spending thousands of dollars. It is conveniently located about 1 mile from my home. Some of the azalea plants have done well, but a majority have died. Sutherlands advertises a 180-day return policy on their plants, flowers, trees, but today I went to return the azaleas and they denied the return, well within the 180-day return window. Keep in mind, this return was just $28+tax. They just lost another customer as they can't seem to do the right thing and support their loyal customer base. Will only shop there now if I'm desperate. Again, this advisory is to refrain from buying garden and landscaping plants from Sutherlands. read more

This place is hit or miss in terms of finding what you need and getting help from any of the employees. I've been here a few times and a couple of employees were helpful and few other times they wouldn't even look at us. In general it looks run down and not very well stocked. If you know what you need and can find it, this is a good store. They have all the hardware needs you would want. If you don't know what exactly you need or can't find it, good luck. All of the workers congregate at the customer service counter/register area at the front of the store instead of roaming around assisting people. After spending a good 30 minutes searching for a drill bit to remove my Jeep hardtop, it was apparent they didn't have it. They had a good selection of sizes, but stopped short of the size I needed. I stopped here instead of the local hardware store around the corner thinking a bigger store was more apt to have what I needed. read more

Sutherlands is a hardware store, much like Lowes or Home Depot, that has a bit of everything. Hardware, electrical, plumbing, gardening, etc. It's all here. I actually prefer Sutherlands to the larger chains. The staff here is helpful, and the merchandise is comprehensive. They do not have everything under the sun--there have been times when an item for which I was looking was simply not something kept in stock--but there is a bit of nearly everything. read more

Susan, you don't know what you are talking about. I have been going to Sutherland's in Waldo for years and it is one of my favorite "quick" places to go to get the basics. They do cut lumber and are happy to do so. Your analysis on the staff is a very limited one. Sutherland's does employ several inexperienced and young individuals who typically run the registers. Did it occur to you that you should seek help under that "Customer Service" sign before you threw your hands up and left, later to spread your bad attitude to anyone seeking real advice about a hardware store? Under that sign you will find a manager who is not only knowledgable but experienced. BTW, most people read a how-to book before getting into a project, it's a good practice. If you are looking for a huge hardware store with every little trinket and bolt ever manufactured, Sutherland's is not your hardware store. BUT, it does have a good selection of the basics as well as a fabulous rewards program. read more

We are in here all the time for stuff because we live nearby. Super friendly staff, I am always asked by at least 3-4 guys what they can help me with while I'm there. (Hopefully they are all employees?!) downside is, it's obviously going to be a little pricier than Home Depot or walmart. read more

Unlike my Yelping brother David A, I actually dig this treasure trove of hard to find gadgets and stuff. The place is not a big box. They don't have everything. But they do have some stuff they big box stores do not. Painting, tiling and drywall tools in particular are just awesome. Try to find a window saw anywhere else (for freeing windows that were painted shut). Help is good when you can find it... but spotty to find just like the big stores. read more

A young man answered the phone, said "what do yah want". I gave him the part number for a larger phillips outdoor lightbulb. We own a business down the street from the Kansas City, Waldo area Sutherlands and have lighting in our parking lot. The kid put me on hold for 15 minutes... then a girl picked up the phone said "who are you holding for"? I explained someone was to be looking up a light bulb for me "phillips 250W..." all she said was "We don't carry Phillips". I asked if someone could look for the same 250W bulb under a different brand and they put me back on hold. 10 minutes later I hung up. I called lowes, 2 minutes later an older gentleman got on the line and said "I'm holding it in my hand". I will from now on, drive to 135th and state line to go to lowes instead of three blocks north to the local Sutherlnads. How disappointing. read more

Here's another hardware store that has everything, yet you're expected to come with your own knowledge and knowing the store layout even upon first visit. I walked out not buying a single thing because: a - the girl by the store door pointed me in a general direction that couldn't have been more vague when I asked for shelving, b - I don't have the luxury of having a garage with my very own power saw, so when I go to a store like this and pay a markup for wood, the very least I'd expect is someone, anyone, to be around to help. Bueller? Forget about getting a suggestion on what was the best option for what I need. Forget about getting someone to cut the wood for me. It ain't happening. And it probably won't for you either. c - when you do find staff, you'd expect them to know the basics. Hardware staff don't have to know everything, even regarding the section they work in. But when I point to several different closet organizers and explain the area in detail, don't try to sell me the wrong thing. Listen Sutherlands... if I'm smarter than your employees regarding building out stuff (which really is pretty sad), then you should do a better job hiring people with knowledge or training people well. It really depresses me that I drove way out of my way for a serious lack of help. If you're in the Waldo area, I guess come here if you don't need any store help at all, otherwise just skip this place. read more

This place needs to re-read the Customer Service Handbook. I had read they carried a specific type of dog treat. Spent 30min wondering around looking. I passed the same 3 employees multiple times and no one bothered to ask if I needed any help finding anything. Finally left figuring they must not need my business. Old school hardware store. Feels much more locally owned than the Depot or Lowes. Everything you would need from a hardware store plus a little more, like clothing and candy. Good nursery department in spring and a more impressive building section than any other store in town. I don't build things but if I chose to, I would come to Sutherlands. The staff is friendly and more helpful than any chain store in town. read more

I went into Sutherland's on 72nd and Wornall to get a few items on 17 March, 2020, and noted that there were, in several bins, large elephant ears. I also noted the tag/bar coded label said $7.99. Thinking this was a good deal, I took one of the large ones of the several of assorted sizes in the bins and proceeded to check out. To my surprise, the elephant ear rang up at $16.99. I told the cashier that the price was in the bin marked $7.99. She hailed who I thought was a manager and we walked to those bins, and sure enough, as I pointed out to that man, the price was $7.99. But down on the bottom of several bins was another bin, and this had a price of $16.99. The manager pointed out that someone must have moved some of the bigger elephant ears to the bin where there are smaller ones for the $7.99 price. I pointed out to him that this was quite confusing and misleading. He rather shrugged and said that was not right. And I told him that it was right, I was a customer who felt screwed and he gave me a "right" or something like that and walked away. I have been doing business at this Sutherland's for many, many years and have never felt so insulted and put down by someone in authority. Sutherlands - Appears you need to do some talking to your folks about treatment of customers, and possibly arrange your merchandise that are the same basic thing where the price of that item is quite clear. Over the past 15 years I have shopped at Sutherlands in Waldo quite a bit, averaging around 3k to 4k spent per year at this location. No more, simply because on Sunday, March 31st 2012 I was turned away at 5:02pm ( I thought they closed at 6pm not 5pm). I would not of been upset but the fact that a guy right in front of me was let in through the "exit" door while I went to the store entrance and saw it was locked. I turned around and went back the exit where the manager who was on crutches had just watched me walk to the entrance and just 20 seconds ago he let the guy I was walking with in the exit. I tried to enter and the manager on crutches stopped me and said "I have to stop letting people in at some point and you happen to be that person it was 5:02pm. I pleaded with him saying I know where the part is I need and it won't take me 2 minutes to get it and get out, my water is off I have a leak and I need to get a right angle 1/2inch copper fitting please I won't take long. He said too bad we are closed. I was furious that he let a guy in after 5pm in the exit while I went to the correct entrance and was denied entry because of locked doors. I truly would of understood if I wasn't in emergency mode because of dealing with a leak at home. I get you have to shut the store down at some point but I was in need of a break and this manager wasn't in the mood to show some customer service at all. Flat out he didn't give a darn about me or my problem he just wanted to shut the store down. I did drive to Home Depot and they took care of me. Home Depot and True Value are a bit further away but I will not step foot in Sutherlands ever again. I have yet to discuss this with the management at Sutherlands and an apology goes a long way and we will see. Honestly my hopes are not high.
