Guess what color our (partial, thank GOD) carpet is? Liver brown walls. Beige carpeting. PUKE. Side note: I have fantasies of ripping up that hideous carpet in the bedrooms and finding decent real wood floors. But that's besides the point. When you've got a serious paint job pending, you can't trust Home Depot. Let's be real, the folks working in that department would just as soon sell you a half gallon of pure crap paint that isn't even going to color your walls (case in point: last year, we bought an inexpensive half gallon of dark red...five coats and tons of streaks later, we had to do a dark wash over it). When we walked into SW this weekend, after agonizing for a month over our color scheme (we are obsessive), we settled on a metallic gold for the dining room that comes right off of our living room, which we planned on making a metallic red. How does one do the metallic thing? You buy a special treatment. The guy working there knew his shit. He pointed us in the right direction of just what we needed and we walked out of there not too long after with just what we wanted. It was a breeze. Paint buying is never a breeze for me. I've gotta give credit where credit is due. The only caveat: I'd avoid buying your supplies here if you can. Blow your load on getting that high quality paint (SW is expensive especially for dark and metallic paints), and save money by buying brushes, rollers, tape, etc. at the hardware store.

Flash forward a bit and we're ready to get this thing painted, but first the never ending process of color swatches. This little store is easy to access next to Sunfresh (Unfresh?) in Westport. People are friendly and mix up color samples with the snap of a finger. Their paints are known for quality as well, so all good things. The only problem for me is that the little color card samples you get look almost NOTHING like the paint. It's probably about 75% accurate which isn't ideal when you're comparing ivory and bone and you feel like you should win something if you can find the difference in those versus eggshell and moonlight. Either way, my old man rant of color swatches is over because again the actual paint samples are what you need anyways and those are well-priced and easy to get.

Who doesn't love a good bucket of paint?…read more Seriously, I know almost nothing about the stuff, but the guy at Spectrum was just the best waiting on me and my daughter today. She brought in a Pantone color guide, he picked out paint that matched it exactly, advised us on what brands and what they'd deliver, helped us pick out some detail brushes and provided advice on getting the job done. Everything we could ask for. He even had a decent sense of humor--not what you might expect in a paint store chap. The store is well lit and clean, inventory is stocked well and things seem easy to find. Someone cares. I recommend them. Would I come back and buy more? In a heartbeat. I keep hearing they're the best in town and now I see why. Drumroll... as the first to review them after likely being on Yelp for years, "Ladies and Genteeeeelmennnn, Spectrum Paint!" "Hello, knock-knock, anyone there???" OK, so reviewing a paint store isn't exactly as exciting as reviewing a fine Charcuterie, Speakeasy or the martinis at your favorite watering hole. Well, these folks are really nice and they deserve 5-stars. That's my review and I'm sticking by it.

It is easy to access the paint samples and there is even a nice table/chairs where you can lay out your project. Another good thing to know is that they also carry wallpaper books The staff is kind of hands off, it is true, unless specifically addressed with a question. I think this comes from dealing with a lot of contractors and designers that already know their stuff. I LOVE being left alone with my own thoughts and I am not really into a baby sitting session. A few times I spotted a helpless customer trying to match some piece of fabric to paint and I helped them match it up real quick so they didn't have to wait for help. Another tip is that they sell large painted swatches and small paint testers. I am a fan.

I'm glad this isn't my neighborhood hardware store, and if it was, I'd take the extra few minutes to go down to Euston Hardware instead.

A few years ago, I purchased over 20 gallons of Ultra Spec paint from this location only to discover that it started peeling in less than 5 years. I shared this information with the store manager and he told me this paint should never be recommended for painting steel pipe. I was then given a contact name and number for a Benjamin Moore representative who could tell me why the coats of paint failed. But again, after numerous phone calls and messages, no one returned my calls. In fact, when I was in the store today another customer overheard my complaint and agreed that this representative was worthless. So it appears this particular paint store has no interest in standing behind their products, especially the ones they recommended for my use. Terri W. 9/23/24

The store is not large so we located the section we needed right away. However, we still couldn't find or determine if the item we were looking at was right for us (again, no one ever asked us if we needed help) and eventually landed on a garden flag stand. We had been to several stores previously for weeks and like to buy local instead of online when we can. This was the first store we found that had substantially stronger garden flag stakes. This whole time, there was a man working that kept his eyes on me and my partner but especially me, scowling. I just ignored it as RBF cause he was an older man, and I had done nothing but smile and greet him when we came in. I could feel him staring at me several times while we were shopping. Every time, I just smiled and he'd look away. We decided to look around the store after deliberating alone for about twenty minutes to see if maybe we could get other gifts for people and bought a few other items. Note, there were two older women working and the older man. When we got to the store, there may have been only 1 other person in there. A small family had also come in at one point but left before we did. Otherwise, the store was entirely empty. At checkout, there were two areas to check out of at the counter. We were still meandering when I came up to one side to look at the stickers. He alerted us that check out was on the other side. He checked us out and I realized he had bagged our items, but we had brought our own bag. When I mentioned this, my partner was like, "Oh yeah! We have our own, we don't need one but thank you." I added in, "Yes save it for another transaction." This man, scowled and stared me down for a solid 15-20 seconds--he literally kept his head facing me, locking his eyes on mine as he put the bag back in the rack behind him. It was so awkward and uncomfortable and honestly rude. I just smiled bigger at him politely, but widened by eyes to make it clear that I DID see him rudely staring at me for refusing a bag. He finally relented, greeted us goodbye. The other female worker had just come back up to the checkout platform as well as we walked out and thanked us with a goodbye as well. It was a very odd shopping experience. The store is very quaint and woodsy. Items are priced to match inflation. They have a variety of things not just for ornithology enthusiasts. The garden flag stand was the best we could find in the area and is very sturdy. I had contemplated coming back to get a bird bath, but I'll try elsewhere cause of the weird interaction.

Very pleasant shopping for what has become a highly enjoyable and colorful hobby for me!

However, the delivery company they use (I believe it is Door Dash) was VERY lacking. As in on the 3rd day I had still not received my "same-day delivery" and I had prepaid a nice tip for the driver. I was online shopping for some kitchen items I needed to replace. I was planning on either going to the store to pick it up or do curbside pickup. Once I had reached a certain amount an ad popped up for free same-day delivery. Why not, right? It's less than three miles, so I was not concerned about a delivery holdup. My order confirmation arrived at 10:31 am. I clicked tracking and the message read that I would have delivery by 9 PM Monday evening. No delivery on Monday. I messaged the automated system and they checked my order and eventually connected me to a customer service representative. He checked my order and told me it was released and was ready for the currier. I was not overly concerned once I heard that and assumed I would receive it on Tuesday. On Tuesday in the early afternoon, I had still not received my order. I called the store directly and they told me the entire order indeed had been processed and was still at the store. I asked if they had drivers delivering that day. I was told they did and it should definitely arrive in Tuesday. That evening I returned home about 10 PM. No package. I checked online to make sure I had not missed a delivery. Again I was connected to a customer service rep who looked up my order and said it should be ready and I could expect it the next day. On Wednesday I had some errands and stopped by the store and checked my order. The young lady at the return / customer service desk contacted someone who checked abs said the package was STILL at the store. He retrieved it for me. I mentioned that I had pre-tipped the delivery and would like to get my money returned as it had, in fact, not been delivered. I was put in touch with a store manager who was gracious and returned my tip. Everyone I dealt with at the store was very kind, patient, and understanding. One of the nearby cashiers said they had a woman just the day before with the same issue. I would NOT recommend trying the same-day delivery as the company they contract with (Door Dash) does not appear to be very reliable. Henceforth, I will either do curbside or in-store shopping. .

I came to the ugly conclusion the other day that I didn't know how to sharpen my tools correctly, so I set out to find someone to get me on the right track. A really young guy named Tyler at Woodcraft is their undisputed lathe expert, so I went to talk to him about my troubles. I expected his time to cost me 20 or 30 bucks, but he put a new edge on the 2 that needed them for free! I will now be able to sharpen correctly from watching him do it. If your in the Overland Park area and you like specialty wood working like lathe projects, go check this place out if you've never been!
