I passed by Sushi Yen often, especially if I take 6th Street. It is very close to the bus 106 stop, making it pretty convenient to get to. I hesitated to try the food as others told me it was ok but pricey and the reviews on Yelp were not that great. I think maybe the menu has changed or something. The place was quiet and nice when I was there for an early dinner. The feel was like a Japanese bar with jazz music. TV was also turned on without the sound which was nice. I was tempted by the huge salmon poke bowl right at the counter and so I ordered that instead of the other dishes. It was really good! It reminded me of the poke bowl at Oka-San Kitchen on Fraser (that is still better because of the ingredients in it). Fresh ingredients and nicely laid out in the bowl. They could have given more miso soup though or use a smaller bowl. Quite disconcerting to be served a half filled bowl of soup. I will be back again to try the fried chicken and curry. I like that this place offers more than just sushi rolls. read more

It's been quite a few years since I last ate at Sushi Yen so I figured it would be a good time to revisit this little eatery located in New West. I had my eye set on trying their Donkatsu Curry Pork Cutlet ($10.90). While it's far from the katsu curry that we've had in Japan, this basic dish is rather large and filling. The pork cutlet is thin and a bit dry but they've made up for this by providing a lot of curry sauce in the dish. I was a bit surprised that I actually wound up finishing all of the curry sauce here (so perhaps it was better than I initially thought). The sharp flavour of the ginger actually worked well in this dish given the mildness of the curry. On a subsequent visit, I tried their Aji Fri ($5.50) which they described as yellow stripe scad which is a type of horse mackerel. Served breaded and deep-fried on top of a spring mix salad with a mayo sauce, I found the crisp coating to be pleasant and this almost had me thinking about fish and chips (sans chips). The Salmon Tataki ($10.90) that i also ordered turned out really well. Served with a tart ponzu sauce, I really enjoyed how tender the salmon turned out in this dish. On their special board, I noticed that they had a Salmon Poke Bowl ($12.50) so I had to give that a go. This bowl includes the salmon sashimi, ginger, spring mix salad, paprika, cucumbers, green onions, sweet onions, seaweed salad, crab meat, and shoyu sauce. I wouldn't really say that I could detect the shoyu sauce as it was a bit overwhelmed by the overly sweet salad dressing but it was a nice try. On my last visit, I tried their Spicy Salmon Sashimi ($10.90) which included 10 pieces of salmon with cucumbers, spring mix, sesame, and coated with a sweet and spicy sauce. They have a small patio in front of the shop and I took advantage of the good summer weather we've been having to try out some of their sushi rolls: Unagi Roll ($5) and Alaska Roll ($6.50) with teriyaki sauce and wasabi mayo. The rolls were filling... mostly because they had a bit too much rice for my preferences. Not bad for the price. Overall, some good items on the somewhat limited menu. I would like to see more types of sashimi available. read more

Craving curry but not sure where to find it? I suggest coming in here! I didn't expect a sushi place to do it right, but here I am, coming back for another. My first time in, I ordered the curry with kara-age because the aji fry was sold out. I got it the next time I came in though. The included miso soup is a great balance of flavour and isn't too salty. The curry is so rich and delicious! It's probably the best I've had in a long time. And the aji fry is lightly battered and boneless. Service is friendly and the ambiance was fine. Never too busy so I always have a place to sit down. read more

We were going to try to eat here yesterday but that didn't happen. It was Saturday at 7:07pm and no customers were there..we asked for seating for a party of 8 (4 adults and 4 kids) and the young lady had a surprised look on her face like OMG! We ordered a japadog, miso soup, dragon roll, chicken karange and the potatoe croquette. I have to say I am impressed by the food here. Its really good and very fresh. The place is a small. The sushi next door to the place I get my hair cut. Also got rave reviews. Really yummy spot, clean, quick, and has busy foot traffic. Sake on site makes Tara a happy girl. We were quite thrilled that the sushi was in fact bite sized, the rolls were tasty, and the gyoza was fresh, hot and tender/crispy. As it should be. The miso was super tasty too. read more

So I took three attempts to finally eat here. The first two times we went during their posted opening hours and were politely told they were closing early. So I guess third time is a charm. They offer a nice simple and compact menu. There is a selection of starters, some sashimi, sushi and noodles. All pretty standard stuff. This is a little gem in new west! There are at least 6-8 Japanese restaurants in downtown new west, it's not easy to stand out among all the competitors. This place is not the cheapest in the area; but it definitely offers very fresh food and excellent service! The Korean Fried Chicken is a must-try if you like chicken karaage! Downtown New West is bizarrely saturated with sushi joints, and a couple new ones go up every year. When Sushi Yen popped up in place of what used to be my favourite coffee shop, I scoffed. Already an Okonomi devotee, I thought "there's no way this place can even compete, even if it is a literal stone's throw from my door". True, they don't deliver, so for those days when I'm truly being a huge, sweats-clad scumbag, I still call up the Big O. But the difference in quality and service is absolutely worth the switch. The chef/owner(?) is a really stellar guy who clearly cares a lot about the food he's serving. The fish is always extremely fresh and beautifully prepared. The menu has shifted a fair bit in the last six months, with a bunch of cooked dishes being added. Having recently tried the Korean fried chicken, can I just say.... WHOA. Yum. Beautifully flavoured, and really well-fried. Nice cuts of meat, too, so juicy. Their hot dogs absolutely give Japadog a run for their money, and are a perfect greasy treat when you need to eat some feelings, or just eat a more cultured dog. If I have any complaint at all, it's that I'm afraid they won't last long given a slightly odd (but still utterly convenient --it's 50m from Columbia Station) location. Those 6th St businesses often struggle, and I want to support them, it being my neighbourhood. Occasionally, the service can be slow (tiny resto, tiny staff) but it's always gracious and friendly. An alright place for cheap lunch. I had lunch special B, which consisted of California roll, chicken udon and a small serving of edamame. Cost about $10, filled me up. Point to sustain: our service was excellent (we arrived for a late lunch and were one of three tables). She brought us tea right away and the wait was minimal. Point to improve: not the most amazing sushi I've ever had, mine lack cohesion and fell apart. My dining partner had no complaints, however. They get points for trying. This sushi bar is actually Korean run, and serves up some real tasty Korean fried chicken. I've been there a few times, and the server tries her best, but the food can take over a half an hour even with only a handful of tables in the restaurant. And unfortunately, communicating in English seems to be a stumbling block. As usual, per my husband's strong dislike of onions, we tried to request "no onions" if at all possible. We found a Korean translation on the phone for green onions - fondly loved as a garnish by many chefs - which sparked some recognition, but of course, the ramen came swimming in the other kind of onions. So if you have allergies or dietary restrictions to communicate, you could experience problems here. The sushi is pretty good, it does the job, but I think of it more as a convenient local spot for quelling a Korean fried chicken craving than anything else. And I reckon I'll stick to ordering takeout. read more

My go to place at least 3-6 times a week. The owner is a genuine nice guy and the waitresses are always very kind. Usually not the most busy place so it should not be hard to get a seat and the food is likely to come in a short enough amount of time. If there is anything to enjoy it is the consistency. I there has never been a time where the food was any different or worse than before, just good tasting food all the time. I hope you enjoy this place as much as I enjoy it. read more

Went here on a Friday night to meet up with some friends. To my surprise, the place was not busy at all and their service really slow. We had the Teri & Mayo Japadog and a Roll Combo.
