Decided to try this place due to recommendations and I was definitely worried due to the location in a strip mall. Previous reviews compare Sushi Ya to Asian Island, and I would say that they are quite similar. Both are excellent. Similar quality food, similar presentation similar service, and similar atmosphere. Asian island has a slightly better setup with their decor and ability to accommodate larger amounts of guests. However, Sushi Ya more than exceeded my expectations. Excellent service, delicious and plentiful menu choices. Specials offered as well. I was definitely pleased. If you like sushi, definitely give it a try. I would not say it is"overpriced". My boyfriend ordered a soda and a few pieces of sushi, and I ordered the tuna dumpling appetizer. We both got a regular roll and a special roll each. Our total was approx $55. We left very full and satisfied. That isn't expensive for sushi, it's average. For those saying the service is over-attentive, I can see how that might be possible because I'm sure that when they are busy they are trying to keep service quick in order to accommodate more guests in a small dining area. Those upset about lunch specials not offered on weekends don't seem to understand the point of specials. Lunch specials are meant to draw in more guests during a period when business is normally slower. Since they are already busy on weekends, they don't need to offer specials those days. A lot of restaurants do it, and it's not really unfair. Overall, I would say Sushi Ya compares with Asian Island and Tokyo Sushi. All three are excellent Sparta sushi locations. The owners welcome me here like a friend, as I keep coming back regularly. Then I notice they do the same for others, as the other patrons cannot stay away for too long, either. If you are anywhere in the area and want the best meal in town, Sushi Ya is the place! Food is okay; however, the service has been bad on multiple occasions. Several times I have been turned away from a table and told to come back later to return to another family sitting at my designated table. There is a communication barrier between the waiters and they have made little effort to make this a pleasant dining experience. When I have gotten a table, I feel rushed to eat quickly and cannot maximize my dining pleasure. I recommend 100% Tokyo Sushi only 5 minutes from Sushi Ya. read more

Uhh...not for me! The special rolls had way too much "sauce" on them. The special rolls were pretty tasteless. The basic tuna hand roll didn't taste like tuna. I'm not sure what was going on. It was pretty busy for lunch so I'm sure some people enjoy it but again, it's just not for me. read more

We've been regular customers at Sushi Ya for years and were so disappointed on our last visit. Now we know we all miss the waitresses that used to work there ... they were amazing! Friendly, helpful, and attentive. The new waitresses are so rude. We came in at 7:45 ... our waitress took our order. She brought our miso soups and salads... then the entire restaurant with the exception of the girl at the cash register sat down to eat dinner. Our sushi rolls were sitting on top of the counter for 20 minutes... we were completely ignored while the staff, ate, played video games, joked and laughed loudly , and talked even louder. We couldn't believe we were in the same restaurant. Obviously, the owners were not there ... and by the looks of it , restaurant was completely empty except for us... I think others see the difference too! Sure hope the owners can get this restaurant back on track before it's too late! This is my favorite sushi place around. The food is excellent, the space is small, but charming. I have ordered a number of items off their menu over the last two years and have never been disappointed. The tuna tar-tar is the best I've had around. The owner is extremely sweet and is always there. The staff has always been very friendly and efficient. My only complaint, is that sometimes they are a little too responsive like they are watching and waiting for you to finish your plate. I haven't experienced this in my last few visits, but when they first opened it took a little getting used to. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a great sushi place in Sussex County. Fresh ingredients, good variety of specials and menu options. Different than the typical "let's put MORE spicy mayo and sugary sauce on it!" sushi places. Small place, manages to not feel like a take-out focused place. It's nice to eat there. Only reason it's not five stars is because nothing on the long menu or specials stood out as OMG amazing. Sushi Ya used to be my family's favorite restaurant in Sparta to get delivery from, but not anymore. We have experienced horrible costumer service from the manager of the restaurant. She would not allow my family to switch a California roll to a tuna roll with sushi dinner and demanded a two dollar charge for the switch. She also was extremely rude when my credit card would not swipe with her machine. I expressed to her that this has happened before and kindly asked her to punch the card number in. She did not acknowledge my request, but took my card and stated, "oh it swipes" in a somewhat stuck up voice. The manager should understand that she is in no way doing me a favor by me attending her restaurant, I am doing her the favor by giving her business. That favor will not be given anymore. I must also add the quality of the food has gone down with the service as well. read more

Sushi Ya is consistently excellent. The seafood is very fresh and exceptionally delicious. The sushi chefs are artists. Service is good. The restaurant is BYOB. And I have never had a screwed-up take-out order. We have eaten there since it opened and I am still thrilled with this place. read more

The food is usually pretty good consistently. The head sushi guy is really good and its a shame I would give it 3 maybe 4 stars honestly. I agree 100% the wait staff is a little on the scary side. Its more than being over attentive. After several visits this past year it is evident that it is the lady who runs the place that infects the staff and makes it an uncomfortable experience because she is uncomfortable. I have on several occasions overheard and noticed this lady seriously politically maneuvering on guests while they are trying to eat. Its obvious she is trying to gain influence in town with anyone who has connections. I am personally aware and witnessed her prying with a heavy hand on people with financial, personal and local political questions and I was appalled. I do not want to and cannot support this type of behavior. This lady should be removed or fired from this place. Furthermore I dont want to feel like they are doing me a favor allowing me to eat there and thats ultimately how it feels. Everytime I ate here I left feeling icky, and its not the fish! read more

Enjoyed the first time we went about a year ago. Not so much today. Went for lunch, but were told that lunch specials do not apply on Sundays. So ended up paying dinner prices for lunch. Food OK, nothing amazing. Salad dressing very watery, tomatoes mushy. Waitresses overly attentive. Stood close to table watching us eat, asked to take plates even before we were finished eating. My whole family LOVES this restaurant! Great service, great food, friendly, and super clean...what more could you ask for? Everything is delicious and very fresh. The restaurant is spotlessly clean. The owners and staff are extremely friendly and attentive, always removing plates the moment you are done and constantly refilling your teacup. My children are still picky eaters...the first time we went there the owner came over and asked my children what type of food they liked and had a special dish created for them! We go there often and the service and food is always consistently great. We have been to many sushi restaurants all over the country, and have been disappointed many times, but not here. We are absolutely thrilled to have Sushi Ya right here in our own town! read more

Really good sushu. They have been consistently good every time I've been here. Tonight I tried the sushi salad without much expectation. Wow, refreshing and delicious. Then I had the tuna dumpling. This had lobster inside. A "purse" of tuna with avocado and chopped lobster inside topped with black fish eggs (they would not tell me what type of fish the eggs were). You dip the dumpling into a sauce then dip it in the crunchy. Yum! Bring a nice bottle of cold sake with you and enjoy. read more

Tried it for the first time the other day. Food ranged from hot chicken teriyaki to sashimi and sushi. Everything was very good and I can't believe I haven't tried this place before. The salmon sashimi was cut so thick I had to cut it in half. For me that's a good thing because I've been to places where the sashimi is paper thin and barely enough for a bite. Good portion size, everything was fresh and very tasty. Will definitely go back for a second time. If it is this good again I'll give it 5 stars. This was a take out order. read more

This is by far the best Sushi in the area. I live in Manhattan and eat at the best Sushi restaurants outside of Japan regularly. And, I've spent a lot of time in Japan eating sushi. This place is great and certainly the best in Sussex County. BYOB doesn't hurt either. read more

The seaweed salad was good. The miso was a little watery, but had a good taste. The golden dragon roll for the main course was very good. I had to order a supplemental roll as they don't offer any courtesy rolls like Tokyo Sushi or, on seldom occasions, Asian Island. The sashimi was not the best, not spoiled or bad in taste, but not tender and lacked that typical, somewhat irony sashimi taste. Service was attentive and courteous, not overly attentive this time, and our orders were served very quickly. Prices are a little steep for what you get. Also, we came on a Sunday afternoon with no one else in the dining room and we were told we could not order from the lunch menu. I guess lunch on a Sunday = dinner. When you compare the quality here versus a place like Tokyo Sushi, Tokyo is superior. I wouldn't recommend against this place, but it wouldn't be a first choice.
