Husband and I went on a weekend trip to Eureka and craved sushi. We found this hole in the wall sushi restaurant which has some of the best sushi I've ever had, and I eat lots from all over the world! The flavor of each roll we have is so distinct and well balanced. Service is standard, nothing overly friendly but courteous. We enjoyed their food so much we came back before leaving town.

I hate leaving bad reviews, and this one hurts because it's the only place I'll eat sushi from in Humboldt. Unfortunately this is the third or fourth bad experience with this place and i won't be back. First time I found a hair in my to go order, called and let them know, they asked me to come in to get a new one. I live 20 minutes away and I had a flight to catch so I didn't bother nor did I bother asking for a refund. Second time I get home with my to go order to find they forgot the 2 main toppings that go on my roll, eel sauce and caviar. In my opinion the eel sauce is what makes the dish. I let it go. And now for a third time, I pick up two rolls ($30 + tip), get home, just to find the same things forgotten. I specifically requested no wasabi, extra ginger like I do every single time and 9/10 times they fail to do it. It gets to a point where it's just ridiculous. The rolls have 4-5 ingredients, how can they mess it up over and over again. They refuse to refund, their solution is come back and get a remake. I don't want to get back in the car, drive 20 minutes to the next town over to get a remake of food I've been waiting for the past hour to eat. Really sad to see good restaurants in Humboldt go downhill in quality, especially while their prices continue to go up.

Checked out this place on the way to Oregon. The sushi tasted fresh and well-made. Ordered the Salmon, Shrimp, and Spicy Tuna Roll. The service was fast and attentive, and the ambiance was very casual.

On December 23rd, my sister and I were hoping to grab sushi for lunch, but many of the Arcata spots were closed for the holiday season. We were thrilled to learn that Sushi Tao was open! This small sushi spot had a delicious array of options, great service, and quality sushi rolls. We had a great lunch there, service was awesome, and I can't wait to go back! Many people were in and out picking up orders, so it seems to also be a popular pick for takeout.

The gyoza was fresh. Nothing exciting about the flavor. The spicy tuna roll was disappointing. The rice was a little stiff, tuna was only slightly better than what u get in a store bought sushi roll. I'm shocked people in the reviews have said this is the best sushi they've ever had. Should I have tried something else? Idk But I'm pretty bummed out that it cost $25

Super tasty off the beaten path sushi place in Arcata. It's a mom n pop shop atmosphere but the food is fine dining style. We both got a roll with salmon in it, can't remember the names but they were both delicious. The Miso soup, tempura veggies and edamame are all bomb too. Made a mistake of ordering three sakis, they came in a nice size bottle with more than enough for the three of us. Portions are generous and the food is fresh. Got the seaweed salad this trip and it was great, nice roasted sesame flavor. This is now our favorite place to get sushi in Arcata

This place was open Christmas Day this year, and I had just moved into a new house. I had few options since it was a holiday, but was blown away by how good this sushi was. I had the dragon roll, it looked beautiful and tasted amazing. Best sushi I've had possibly. I ordered online and it was ready in 45 mins. Updating my review for a full 5 stars. I've continued to eat here for years and have nothing but love for this place. Food is still amazing and arrives quickly despite how crowded this place can get, prices are worth it, the restaurant is always clean, and service has become some of the most consistent and friendly in Humboldt county in the past couple years. I have yet to have any more negative server experience since my previous comment. Love it here, and will continue to eat here for hopefully many more years! read more

The sushi itself is ok but the portions are super small. You need at least three rolls per person to have a moderate sized meal. Even the sushiritto which should be a lot of food is comically small. On the positive side everyone is nice and the food comes out really fast. read more

Just okay...hubby and I stepped in here for our anniversary dinner looking forward to some delicious sushi. Unfortunately, we came off underwhelmed. The roll selection was not great or unique and the rolls were EXTREMELY thin, I mean the thinnest I've ever seen I think. I gave them three stars because the raw pieces were actually really fresh and pretty good size. I would come back for the raw sushi forsure, but definitely not the rolls. LoVE LoVe LOVE this place! Its a small place in a corner of a "strip mall" on 18th & H Sts in North town Arcata. They have a great selection of fresh sushi rolls, soups, appetizers, sashimis and hot plates. Great for kids too...they have a kids menu. Start with entrance...always greeted in and sat immediately although its small and gets packed fast! Decor is great! Basic booths and tables but the wall art is amazing...its amazing 3D mosaics done by local Artisan Laurel Skye and her daughter, Marley. Art doesnt make it all good...its the service which is awesome, tables always cleaned, drinks refilled and the food! Portions are ample, rolls are niced sized. They come out on unique plates. You can get soda, sake, beer, tea beverages as well. Compared to other local places, I really like this place over the ok food and high prices of the other sushi joints in town! My first choice in sushi spots, I have brought numerous guests on numerous occasions who have also patronized without me. Theyre great for takeout too...approx 15 to 20 minute pickup time. This place is awesome. It's really close the the HSU campus, and it's just a small hope over the free way. I got the salmon rolls, my friend got the 49er rolls. Both were really good. The tempura veggies is also great. The cooks give you a lot so there more then enough to share. The workers are really nice, and made sure everything was perfect. If you like sushi I would definitely one here. read more

Called ahead for takeout during COVID-19 closures. This place surprised me!! I wasn't expecting much from sushi way out in Northern California but this was way better than most sushi I've had in San Francisco and the Bay Area. The salmon sashimi was especially delicious. Tasted so fresh! All the rolls we had were yummy (49er, eel crunch roll) and the chicken teriyaki meal was good. Food was prepared quickly too. read more

We have been getting sushi delivered from here for the last 6 months since we came to town. It's always scary finding a sushi spot when you move to a new place, you never know what you're going to get. But this place is AMAZING. No roll has disappointed us yet. Always fresh and delicious. The good flavor and prep has changed so much and I mean that in a negative way. It's not at all what it used to be. My husband and I will not be going back. My California rolls tasted so fishy and they shrunk to half the size they used to be. The salad dressing is not flavorful anymore and my salad had all the hard white part of the iceberg lettuce. My husband ordered chicken katsu and it was so crispy. He said that they probably had leftovers and refried the chicken. They also squirted the sauce all over the chicken instead of the side sauce that was given before. The prices are rediculous, they went up so much. I wouldn't mind paying more if it were delicious, but unfortunately it's not. I understand that there are new owners? read more

This is what passes for sushi in a coastal city? I ordered four rolls and two of them tasted of rot. So 50% were decent. The dragon roll was quite good, so hit that one up. The smoked salmon roll tasted like it might be leftover fish dug out of the dumpster from the nearby better sushi restaurant. The Klamath roll might as well just be called the Panko roll because that's all you can taste. The staff was rushed and seemed like it was an inconvenience to have customers. In the end, you're better off bypassing this place, because anyone can roll a turd up in some seaweed and rice read more

We have visited Arcata 3 times from Sacramento over the last year. Sushi Tao is somewhere we come every time. The sushi is tasty, fresh, consistent, and fast! I can't say enough good things about the service here. Always very accommodating and we have not had to wait long for anything. You can be in and out of here within 20 minutes if you want. We have had the salmon nigiri, many different roles, miso soup, and veggie tempura and all have been tasty. No complaints! Would definitely recommend to anyone. read more

Probably the worst sushi I've had, and I've had some pretty damn good sushi. Eel sauce tasted like bbq sauce..... had 10 different sushi items, I think the only tolerable one was the spicy tuna.... 5 stars cuz the service was really friendly and nice, we had a large table with a lota of random orders, and they got it all, we got there and they had a new menu, so the servers wasn't so prepared for it, but anyhow they did everything that they could to help and explain. Really fresh food and really fresh fish! Amaaaaizing price and awesome place to have some unfiltered sake and share some good rolls with your roomies. read more

They didn't tell us what was on it but I think it was albacore, salmon, salmon roe, mackerel, yellowtail, and tuna. He said it was some of the best tasting fish/nigiri he's had in a while. Their plum sake is very good, smooth and light. I also got a hot tea but that was only hot for a moment out there, the sake definitely did more to keep us warm. Their ramen bowls are now my favorite in downtown, the pork is DELICIOUS, the broth could be a drink on its own and the marinated egg has a perfectly soft yolk; it's a very pretty dish. Like they had somewhere else to be. Mind you this was 3pm on a Sunday afternoon. We saw them once again when they slapped down the check. Then they came to get it a few minutes later and we felt hurried out the door. The bus person was seen whisking food and debris off the tables instead of wiping them down. Several tables. The waiter's attitude was hurried, impatient, and not even a "how is your meal". Ambience: it was nice to be out on the deck. Otherwise nothing special. The host podium is crowded with stuff around it. It looks like they are storing things in the entrance. After hearing so much about how nice and it was, I was disappointed. I'd eat somewhere else and ride the elevator up to walk around the non-restaurant part of the rooftop to see the view. Honestly.

If I could give 0 stars I would. Sub-par food and EXTREMELY INFERIOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. I couldn't believe the way the woman here treated me she took my order. I used to be a regular here way back in the day, and decided to give this place another shot after they'd gone downhill after the pandemic... But now I regret giving this place another chance. They are worse than ever. Food has never been worse. Not only was the food NOT as ordered, but it was soggy to boot... I could have just taken the food slightly wrong - but the fact it was disgusting on top of being WRONG... Wow. How do you even make sushi soggy like that? Horrible place, and horrible service. Take your service somewhere it will be appreciated, because the woman who takes your orders here is absolute scum and makes you feel bad for having ordered here right from the get-go. By far my favorite sushi place in humboldt. Great service and always fresh fish. There were some reviews complaining about the size of the rolls. I don't mind it at all since this is how it's traditionally made. I can eat the golden dragon and tempura yam every day. Yum!! Definitely recommend! read more

The sushi here is really good. It's hard to find good spots in Arcata and the surroundings areas but this cute little spot is the best I've had so far. Prices are a little expensive but the sushi is good and fresh and the staff are helpful, attentive, and welcoming. Keep up the good work! read more
