I have driven past this restaurant so many times. Last night I was looking on yelp to see where we should venture out for dinner. Sushi Mo came up in my high rating, high review radar. The decision was made. Our first impression of Sushi Mo when walking in was hopeful and excited. The layout of the restaurant was great and inviting. It also looked exactly how a Sushi Bar should. I personally didn't find this place to be overpriced. Sushi in general isn't really cheap. Everything tastes fresh and it's well made. I love the presentation as well. We have been here twice so far, the staff is really nice, we haven't had to wait at all to be seated. This place will be one of our regular spots. read more

Let me start by saying that this place really needs some recognition!!! This restaurant is by far the BEST sushi in Vancouver and possibly Portland as well!!! I know people often mention sushi Bambu but this place is DA PLACE!! The sushi was delicious, we had a variety of plates and everything came perfectly executed and tasting fresh as sushi is expected to taste! I found this restaurant thru Yelp as well. We had a few different plates along with some great sake. The staff was super friendly!!! Prices are just fine, I'm sure some will complaint that's too expensive, perhaps cuz living off minimum wage is quite the hardship. I think the price is just fine for what you get. I started off with the Grand Mo Sashimi(go big or go home) lol then 2 orders of baked green mussels(delicious) a couple rolls I can't remember and then some Cali hand rolls too, some orders of seared salmon and seared tuna, also had some sake I think it was the pure dusk it was delish! Tasted very similar to a white wine of some sort. Dessert we had mochi ice cream. Everything was delicious. I'll be going back to this spot in a heart beat. If you are looking to spend $265 on sushi that's average at best this is the place for you. I took my family there a family of four was handed a menu with no prices and a marker. I marked off a few items, and the bill was $265. I mean sure if you were paying for presentation then this is the place for you. But to not say anything about the price that is about to take place and to have a what looks like a dishwasher bring me the bill just seems shady and ridiculous. We went here recently to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday. She has gone to a sushi restaurant for every single birthday, without exception, since she was a little girl, so this was approaching the 35th sushi birthday dinner. We looked at the menu on their website that google maps linked to. It listed her favorite roll in the world, available in many or most American sushi restaurants, the negihama roll, which is yellowtail and green onion. The menu at the restaurant didn't list it, and when she asked if she could swap the avocado in the yellowtail and avocado roll on their menu for green onion, some weird stuff happened. (She has a food allergy to avocado) It required several levels of authorization ending in the restaurant owner (or we assumed it was her, since after so much fuss, only the owner could have had that level of clearance to make such a heavy decision about a veggie substitution in a single sushi roll) coming to our table to tell us we were looking at a menu that was 2 years old and they no longer served the yellowtail and scallion roll. It seemed clear they wouldn't even serve my girlfriend a plain yellowtail roll. She was just intimidating. And she said no substitutions were allowed. Except they happily substituted the seaweed wrapping on my sushi for soy paper without having to check in with increasing tiers of authority. Also, update your website. I just think when someone I love goes to a restaurant on their birthday and doesn't want to eat an ingredient they're allergic to, and it's easy for the chef to swap it for something cheaper anyway, that should happen. My girlfriend is really, really shy and was flustered and unable to select enough food or speak up for herself and had to take a good ten minutes to get back to smiling. But my charm and wit saved the day as usual. The food itself was good, if overly focused on its presentation. My first time here, needed a place where I could read undisturbed and have some good fish. Perfect. Presentation of food was all very fine, elegant even, while still maintaining a Japanese understatement. Service was attentive but not overbearing. Yellow tail collar appetizer was ok and very fresh, though I've had better. It wasn't super flavorful, and sometimes that's just the fish. The tsukenomo pickled veg was also solid. The carrots and cucumber were house made. The burdock may have been but it really just tasted sweet. The daikon seemed like purchased, but ok. Roasted rice tea was pleasant. The owner (she had that vibe but I don't know for sure) offered me a free dish of edamame. When you enter, the sushi chefs both cry out a greeting. So there's something old school about this place. Even some of the house specials (in my case an albacore carpaccio) hewed to a traditional flavor profile, which I appreciated (I was tempted by a salmon carpaccio with truffle salt, but that will wait for next time). Though it was supposed to come with some diced ume plum, it did not. When the chef asked how I enjoyed it, I said q"uite, although I couldn't detect any umeboshi." He apologized that they were out, but included some puréed umeboshi on the side of my salmon skin hand roll to make up for the absence of diced ume on the albacore. This may well be the best sushi that Vancouver can support. It was better the most places in Portland, and I would definitely go again. But for some reason, it just didn't hit all the notes to move to that rarified place of a 5 star review. And it should have. Sometimes it's just how well you mesh with a place on a given day. They charge a lot of money for a plate covered in garnishes and dribbles of brightly-colored, but flavorless sauces I've never seen on most sushi plates. You'll wonder where the fish is, especially when you order one of the rolls that typically come with a healthy serving of fish. The rainbow roll we ordered had the most paper thin fish I'd ever seen along the top and it was clearly dominated by white fish. Salmon nigiri had barely enough fish to flavor the rice. Rice was dry and poorly seasoned. Some of the good reviews highlighting how there's no wait at this restaurant? There's a reason it's easy to get a table. At this price point, I expect to have full-sized slices of fresh fish on my order and better rice. You'll get a better deal by going to any number of conveyor-belt sushi places, but if you want high quality, cross the bridge and go to Bamboo Sushi in Portland. Once you've made that comparison, you'll never go to Sushi Mo again. The servers were good. No problems there. But I'd honestly take worse service if my meal were worth the price. read more

We asked the server for a replacement of the roll and they stated since it was made they will not sub out. I stopped in here fora quick ish I warm up while I waited for my table down the street. I ordered 3 Ebi and 3 of the Maguro (yellow fin tuna) . What. The teriyaki didn't even taste like teriyaki; more like burned soy sauce; how does one cut the chicken with a serrated knife? It would have been pre-cooked already. If you served me Panda's chicken on a separate plate, it would have been awarded a Michelin Star...We also tried 5 different sushi dishes, and they all failed. While ordering, we told the waitress that we were interested in the real crab meat and would pay the difference, however the orders came with the imitation crab. There was also a hair on my teriyaki. They didn't even care when I told them I was unhappy with the food and should have wondered why we only touched 15% of our food. What a waist of $200. I visited this restaurant 2 years ago and thought it was really good. I returned for dinner recently. We ordered a selection of rolls, sake, and beers. The sake was good, beers were good, service was really nice. But the sushi was just yucky. It tasted watery which is something I've never experienced. I don't know if they just messed up the rice on that particular day, but it was not good. We also ordered a couple spicy rolls and there was no spice to them at all.
