    Sushi platter

I went in a little skeptical, but boy was I impressed! This is a family run restaurant of 18 years, they're so sweet and welcoming. And most importantly, the sushi is good, fresh, and full of flavors! If more people knew about how good the sushi was then they could afford to update the interior, come on guys let's get this sweet place some support!

    Nico B.

My husband and I frequented this sushi restaurant fifteen years ago when we lived nearby, but after moving from the area we haven't been back since. After visiting a family member in a hospital nearby, we did a quick Yelp search and found Sakanaya. What a trip down memory lane! Immediately after walking in the restaurant, the owner walked up to us and said, "It's been so long! Thank you for coming back to see us." Seriously, it's been fifteen years and this kind and generous woman remembered us! It's experiences like this that remind me how much I love supporting businesses that strive to make a difference in the lives of their customers. The warmth of the folks at Sakanaya is genuine; not only do they care about making delicious food, but they bring a level of compassion that is increasingly uncommon. I'm so happy we stumbled into this experience today. There are many Korean and Japanese dishes to choose from, but the sushi is where this restaurant really shines. They produce high quality and inventive dishes using fresh ingredients. They've discontinued their sushi conveyor, so everything must be ordered from the menu. Everything seems to be delivered at once, but the end product is worth the wait! Presentation is a high priority here, as dishes are served with veggie and floral garnishes. Orchids always earn an extra star in my reviews! They just brighten my day. You can bet I'll be coming back to Sakanaya again in the near future. Support the businesses you love, and do what you can to ensure they can continue serving the community for years to come.

Pretty good! Went in for lunch, there were no plates on the conveyor belt. But it was a quiet weekday lunch so probably not worth loading up the conveyor with sushi not knowing how long it will sit there. Instead they just give you a paper menu to check off what you want and how many, and a couple other menus that offer descriptions of what each roll has. Staff was friendly and fast. The sushi rolls looked beautiful when they came out.

Dined in for a quick craving satisfaction. Free parking lot, quiet crowd, 'bar' seating. I started with calamari and miso soup. Both were good. Had the pacific crunch roll (pictured) and it was perfect. I'd try this place again!

I love their sushi rolls! I moved from California and it was so hard to find a place with good sushi. Their rolls are so delicious.

Labor posters in high visibility location

Sakanaya Sushi is located in the spot once occupied by Sushi Tsunami. I used to be a frequent customer at Sushi Tsunami. It's been years, and the name/ownership has changed. I was interested to try out the current occupant of the location - - decide whether to start coming back again. Here's my review. As I approached the front door, I noticed that the letters on the door indicated that no outside food is permitted. That rubbed me the wrong way - made the place seem low class. (No - I did not intend to bring in my own food!) There was also a messy paper sign stuck on the door which announced to the world that the restaurant will be closed on a couple of upcoming Tuesdays. This prevailing messiness will be the subject of much of this review. I entered the restaurant well after opening time, but it appeared to be closed. These people need to understand something about restaurant atmosphere. The old Sushi Tsunami was well-lit and inviting. We were aware that the restaurant is open. The old Sushi Tsunami was one of those places with plates of sushi traveling around the room on a belt. The belt is still there, but the new tenants have decided not to use it. Having this disused piece of equipment sitting right in front of me just seemed sad and tacky. It's totally okay to deliver the food to the diner without a mechanized conveyance, but please get rid of the belt if you aren't going to use it. Make the place look nice, not tacky. They have a big screen TV propped up against the wall playing loud music videos. This is problematic in so many ways: (a) The big screen TV does not contribute to the dining experience. It would be if this were a sports bar; (b) The TV was propped up on some softcover books. Okay - if you're going to feature a television as part of your restaurant decor, then at least make a professional installation - not sitting on softcover books and leaning against the wall; and (c) This arrangement bombards diners with an unpleasant/undesirable cacophony. If a diner wants to listen to music, then we all have smartphones that can provide individualized musical entertainment for us. (Maybe this music is for the benefit of the employees. I was the only diner present, so the waitress turned of the noise when I asked. Then, another employee came out and turned it back on.) The menus have tape covering the prices. Okay, maybe the prices have changed. Yes, you can find the price on a separate printed piece. However, this is another example of tacky-tacky-tacky. (Bad atmosphere) There are a bunch of labor posters in a highly visible location. This is just another example of tackiness. These items should be in the back of the restaurant in a location not viewable by diners. My point is that the restaurant has a generally junky appearance and bad atmosphere. If you want to persuade diners that your food isn't worth very much, then junky appearance and bad atmosphere is a sure way to do it. The food: I had a salmon nigiri and spicy tataki. The food was decent. Not great, and not terrible. I would give it a four out of ten - just a hair below average. Pricing: The salmon nigiri was $5. I would expect to pay about $4 for this, so their pricing is a bit over what I would expect. I would not expect to pay a premium particularly in a place that has bad atmosphere. If they would up the classiness of the place, then I would be willing to pay their prices. Service: The service was unremarkable one way or the other. I have no complaints. Nice people. Cleanliness: My server was cleaning when she wasn't serving me, so I have no concerns about cleanliness. The verdict: Would I go there again? Not if they don't change things. Readers might think that this is hostile review, but that isn't my intention; this review is intended to be helpful to the restaurant's owner. I hate to see the junky appearance of the restaurant. Please get rid of the stuff on boxes. Fix things up. Make your restaurant a pleasant place to dine and I expect you'll have more customers. (And I think that you need to up your game on the food too.

$15 beef soup. Very small. Like a side of miso size and just a few pieces of meat

Overpriced and very small portion size. If the portions was bigger then the price would be okay, but for the restaurant you would expect more. Its not fancy, it's kinda old and dingy so I was expecting the portions to be bigger for the price. I guess they want fancy restaurant price AND portion. Can't do that when the place looks like it does.

Beautiful and delicious!! Those Hawaiian rolls

The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 stars, is that we've had better spider rolls and salmon at other local Japanese restaurants. What really stood out was the bento box selections. I should have selected teriyaki beef instead of the salmon. The salmon was overcooked. Hard, and not very tasty. The salad dressing had no taste either. I am accustomed to delicious ginger dressing for salads at Japanese restaurants. The tempura was delicious. My husband said that he's had better spider rolls elsewhere. To be fair, we've lived in areas that have superb Japanese food (Hawaii, Guam, and the Bay Area in California). And my husband has traveled to mainland Japan and Okinawa. He's a military veteran, and so is my dad, so we've lived in several states, and overseas. Sooooo... for Southwest Washington, Oishi Sushi is definitely worth trying, for lunch or dinner. CHEERS!
