It was another conversation with The Wife about trying something new for dinner. We agreed on sushi but did not feel like the usual conveyor place or the other popular local chain. Out came the Yelp App and she checked for something new. Then she muttered, "Joy Sushi?". It read great, and she told me where to drive to and I asked, "That mini mall where the Megabyte is?" (a place we took our son when he was younger) So I pointed the Yelpmobile toward a nondescript mini mall. Joy Sushi is close to the little gas station and next to a Pho place (not sure if they are related). When you walk in, the place has a clean feel to it. Workers moving about from table to table and at some tables sushi was being serving on wooden boats. Cool! After being seated we were given menus which were complete with all kinds of appetizers and different kinds of sushi. And it wasn't just the usual rolls and nigri, although some classics were there, newer reimagined rolls were available. Quite a few had jalapeno, which isn't really my Wife and my bag, but you can ask for it to be omitted. Our order was served on a cool little boat! The rolls were noticeably larger in diameter than what we were used to. They tasted very fresh; the flavors burst across our taste buds. We were very happy with our new discovery. Joy sushi is a mixed bag, and has been inconsistent in its quality over my few visits. The first visit was great! Very prompt service, and very good and fresh flavors. Prices are on the low side, especially in light of the presentation and quality of the dishes. Second visit wasn't so good. Service was much slower, and things didn't seem to be as fresh or tasty. I'd not recommend the custard dessert, it was served to me partially frozen, was pretty much flavorless, and seemed to have had far too much gelatin added when it was made. The interior is pretty dirty, too. Walls look like they've never been cleaned, and some booths' walls are far worse than others. This location is in a, "old", shall we say? strip mall, and the area can be a bit seedy. There's plenty of parking available, though, and ingress and egress is easy. read more

The restaurant itself isn't the biggest but we came in a bit early for dinner (around 5pm) and had no issues being seated right away. While all the rolls were decent they were kind of similar to each other in taste. 2. Each roll was just so huge it was not possible to eat in one bite. Biting into them was difficult because nori sheets don't break that easy creating a mess. I prefer more compact rolls.It was not easy to even grab a roll with chopsticks because they were way too big 3. Rolls were just excessively rich in taste. Too much sauce. Not very balanced 4. I was looking forward to this meal. It's in a weird collection of strip mall stores. But some of the best sushi I've had has been in a strip mall, so based on the reviews I was expecting this place to be good. I cannot understand the high scores. The quality of the fish is very low. The tuna, salmon, yellowtail were spongy and water-soaked, certainly frozen. The yellowtail was off, and it's my very favorite--I had to spit it into a napkin. TMI, I know. The picture is of the fish we couldn't eat because it was waterlogged and tasteless. I'm going to feed it to the crows. They'll think it's super. If you love sushi, and are used to quality fish, this is not the place for you. Also, it's not cheap, however the slices of fish are ginormous (too big). Maybe that's why people like it. It's definitely quantity over quality. One outstanding thing--the couple operating the restaurant are super nice--I wish I was able to write a good review. We were looking for a new experience and stumbled upon Joy Sushi while cruising down 4th Plain. We had a wonderful experience. A family operation, their mantra is upping the customer experience and bringing joy to each visitor who comes through the door. Jessica and her family have done an excellent job on that front, and the food complements their dedication perfectly. Fresh, tasty, and a great menu variety that isn't too bloated with an overpowering list of items. Sushi dishes were some of the best in Vancouver. They even have a dessert sushi roll called sweet angel. A must try! Lanzhou soup was some of the best we ever had. Broth was clear and tasty and meat was cooked perfectly. Lots of love and dedication going into their dishes and cannot recommend them enough...and they have great xia long bao! Will be going in again this week! Thank you, Joy Sushi! Was hoping for a good sushi experience given the ratings and lack of decent sushi spots in the area. Unfortunately I must have been on the worst end of their inconsistency mentioned in reviews. In all honesty, this is more of a 4.5/5. The pricing is tough to swallow but they made a great effort in customer service including getting the door for every single guest after they left. Joy Sushi seems to be a new place around town and with good reviews on Yelp and Google, we got in the car to go check it out. We ordered the ninja roll, shrimp tempura, Vegas roll, salmon roll, and rainbow rolls. The sushi here is pretty good but I feel like at the price point, they are competing with some heavy hitters including Mio Sushi. The fried stuff was really good. The Vegas was a nice touch of fresh with the tempura matter to ask some crispness. The shrimp tempura was small but also good. Thumbs down on not having tempura sauce; they served with sweet and sour instead. The salmon roll a bit of a miss for me. It was basically a California roll with a sliver of salmon. The rainbow roll and ninja rolls were good with no additional comments. All in all, the service is good here. I'm not sure if it is because they are new, but the staff is ambitious and willing to serve above and beyond. I do wish they would get the price a little more in the realistic ball park. I have eaten a LOT of sushi in my life. I'm originally from Los Angeles, and I've had everything from grocery store slices to famous eateries with hilltop city views. Imagine my surprise when Joy Sushi beats them all. I'm a salmon aficionado and the salmon nigiri here is nearly the size of a lobster tail, and so sweet and buttery. The slices of sashimi (which I didn't get a picture of because I was immediately eating it) were artfully arranged, and each slice was honestly the size of a full filet of fish in itself. The miso was hot, dark, and savory, with plenty of tofu and seaweed. The rolls were well constructed, especially the Rainbow Naruto roll was very refreshing and crisp. Our waitress mentioned the cucumber had just come in, and we could tell. Extremely fresh. We came on a Saturday at dinner and we were one of three couples in the restaurant, there are maybe 12 tables, half of which are booths. Service was incredibly prompt, kind, and conversational. Prices were MORE than reasonable for the portion sizes you get. We won't be going to any other sushi place than Joy Sushi. Five stars! read more

So...a few things to consider. One, I recommend taking your order to go. The "ambiance" is not exactly made for sushi eating. Lots of excess storage boxes within sight. Music is not very relaxing. Can't recall the lighting, but I felt I was eating under autopsy lights. Having said all this, I'm not sure who or where my sushi "chef" is. Whoever is preparing my raw fish is nowhere in sight. He or she or they or someone is prepping my nigiri behind a wall. Call me silly, but I like to be able to see the fish my chef is preparing, either at a counter or at least visible from my table. Not here! Doesn't really feel like a sushi restaurant when the "mystery sushi chef" is behind the curtain behind the wall behind a stack of paper towel boxes. So there's that. However, the fish is decent. And rather large pieces. So if this is your jam, you should be fine. Service is ok. Just enough to get by.
