Five stars if you want takeout sushi - this is definitely not a sit-down restaurant. But if you want some incredibly cheap, delicious takeout sushi, this is the place. The rolls and nigiri are HUGE, as lots of people have mentioned here. Everything I've had has been great. Last weekend we ordered sushi for what we thought would serve 6 people ($20/person, seems reasonable, right?). Except really, we ordered enough sushi for 12 people. Oops. Leftover sushi? When I say that I wanted to find a place that I could eat at and support a "small" business. I didn't realize it would be a SMALL hole in the wall sushi place. We walked in and that was about it. Cause there wasn't much room to take off my jacket. There's seating for about 4 people. Crammed, against a wall. It was my girlfriend and I, and 3 employees all jammed into this place we could have smelled what we had for breakfast on each other. Didn't realize this place was TINY. It only has stool seats available, for maybe about 4 people. Definitely a hole-in-wall. With that said, I was expecting this place to be good since I'm a fan of their Burien location...and it was! Although I think the Burien one has a much better menu with tastier roll options. I know the rolls here are huge. I've read the reviews and I've eaten here many many times, so why is that I keep ordering too much? I blame the other sushi joints. I've been trained by them to order at least two or three rolls, but here, three rolls could last for two meals. Unlike their rolls, this place is tiny. Sushi was good, the ratio of rice to fish was too high in the rolls so it tasted mainly of rice. Rolls were large and filling.

4.5 stars. The geisha and oishi rolls are the bomb! You can order a party plater and have very happy eaters that will scrounge down the variety of rolls. The place is freaking tiny but thats part of the charm. Eating there with 3 ppl is kinda pushing the limit but it's unpretentious and consistently good. If you travel oversees you know tiny hole in wall places are the hidden gems. I have confess I have definitely ordered from this place for my birthday and have gone to very expensive sushi places for my birthdays as well. An itsy bitsy tiny take out joint that has a few stools along the wall if you would like to eat your sushi there. I really wanted to like this place because it is nearby my flat and would be a great lazy night meal. I love sushi of all forms and I know it doesn't always have to be expensive or fancy to be delicious. With that being said, I felt the fish that was used for the rolls were not fresh and of poor quality. Most of the rolls even included lettuce when they weren't suppose to. I guess it was because it is a cheap filler for the rolls. The rolls were inexpertly rolled and the fish slices were uneven and very thin. I feel that this sushi was on par with you could get at a supermarket sushi cooler case and not a very nice supermarket to boot. Fills the stomach but leaves much to be desired. I was apprehensive at first - in Seattle on business, stumbled across Sushi Maki while taking a walk. they dont take credit, so I had to go to the ATM across the street. The store is so small that you really cant have more that 3 people inside comfortably, but the sushi they put out is BIG!!! And the best sushi that I have ever had - anywhere. I ordered the Mexican roll (4.95), Volcano roll (6.95) and Red Dragon (6.95) and brought it back to my hotel. There was no way that I could finish it all. I had to eat the salmon off of the top and pick apart the last 7 or 8 rolls to avoid the rice. It was too good to waste. The salmon and tuna were so fresh that I felt as though I could have been at one of Seattles top sea food restaurants. I am literally looking for any excuse to get back to Seattle fagain for business just to eat at Sushi Maki. This place rocks. read more

I live a block down from Sushi Maki, based on the Yelp reviews I thought I would check it out. I ordered two spicy rolls; one crab and one salmon, and the yellowtail sashimi. The rolls were ok, nothing spectacular but the sashimi was well below my expectations: not fresh, odd texture.. seemed closer to mackerel than tuna. The total with hot green tea was $27.00. As far as a cheap, easy sushi place this does not cut it. I will opt for the more formal Sushi places in the future and put this place in the "pass-on" column. Bette sushi can be had at the QFC up the street if your looking for cheap and quick sushi. This place made me sad. read more

The biggest surprise of all is that it literally is a hole-in-the-wall type of spot. I stand by this; the smallest sushi joint in all Seattle with marvelously tender sushi! 4 stools and two narrow counters make for the kitsch appeal of its niche in Capitol Hill. The chefs are right on hand to order and quickly get the meal going. There was a huge awkwardness of having them stand right there while trying to have a conversation without feeling them linger over you. (hint: keep the details at home). All the rolls were tasty and topped with fresh sashimi or roe. YUM! I also recommend splurging on any of the fresh sashimi, the yellowtail came in huge slices and so tender. If I am correct the word 'maki' means volume in English. I think this place is trying to warn you that your stomach better be able to expand to a large volume to hold the huge rolls this place is putting out. They also have a large volume of Sushi to choose from, and it tastes good too. Tried the Geisha roll; salmon, shrimp, masago, avocado, cucumber, scallion, topped with eel and avocado. Fantastic! Also had the Yellow Tail special, also good but the yellow tail was different than what I am used to. I love it when they give you some lemon slices with the yellow tail, nice touch. Only thing not voluminous is their eating area of course, best plan to take out. Oh, and BRING CASH, no cards. My GF has put up the challenge that she can eat 4 of these monster rolls in one sitting, will update the posting with the results, and possibly some pictures as evidence. Worst experience with a restaurant I have ever had. We ordered 3 rolls and 8 pieces of nigiri. Estimated time for the order was 40-60 minutes. Seemed like a long time for an order but we were willing to wait because we really wanted sushi. This order was done through yelp with Eat24 delivering btw. 70 minutes later I get a text from the Eat24 driver telling me that the food was not ready when they went to pick it up and the restaurant said it would be another 30 minutes. I call the restaurant and they assure me I would get a full refund. 2 minutes after I get off the phone with the restaurant I get a call from Eat24's customer support telling me that he restaurant had called them and cancelled the order. Poor management. Poor communication. Poor customer service. I wouldn't know if the food is any good. read more

Let me start by saying that this is a "Take-Out" Sushi place. I'm amazed at all the people complaining about the lack of seating. Are Americans really as lazy as I thought? Great value. Rolls are $12 each and easily 4 inches in diameter. Extremely filling, decent ingredients. We got 3 rolls (one with eel, one with spicy tuna, and a rainbow roll of sorts) and we could barely finish half of our food. They weren't the best rolls ever, but they were still pretty good. However, they are SO SLOW. We waited for 45 minutes in the extremely small place so we could get our order to go. It was kind of unacceptable considering that nothing needed to be cooked. It is with great sadness that I must give Sushi Maki a three. I almost gave them a two, but I couldn't do it. Its because their quality has gone way down. When I first moved here and found this place, it helped me get through my first Seattle winter. It was my favorite. I think I almost got mercury poisoning. They I stopped going for no reason for 6 months. Went back recently and the quality is not good. Their prices in the beginning were so ridiculously low, I could see how they needed to increase their prices. But two of us used to eat for about $25-30, and last few times its been over $40. Big jump, and with the coordinating drop in quality, its kind if hard to stomach. But now they take credit cards! Sadly, we've taken this out of the regular rotation. I'm going to keep tracking Yelp an see if they improve. Oh, and once we ordered edamame, and they pulled somethign out of a freezer and microwaved it. read more

This is my favorite sushi place in the world. I lived in Japan for a month and this is totemo oishi desu yo! How to do it: 1. Order via phone. 2. Show up 20 minutes after you order unless it's Sunday early afternoon. 3. Skip the line of people waiting to order with your cashi in hand. 4. They don't take debit/credit...really, cash in hand. 5. Get a cup of tea or water if there's still a wait. (shouldn't be more than 5 minutes if any at this point...we're talking Friday night at 8pm) 6. Only order one roll per person. 7. Tip. It's worth it. 8. Get a Kirin Ichiban or a bottle of wine at City Market on your way home. read more

When I lived in a far away town, every week I would go with my coworkers to a tiny stall in a nearby fish market to get lunch from Sushi Andy. For about $12, we walked out with hefty Styrofoam containers stuffed with generous portions of sushi. After much searching, I stumbled upon my very own Sushi Andy here in Seattle. Sushi Maki is essentially take-out only. Its location is so small, I'm surprised they haven't tried to turn it into a $150,000 condo. There is room for two people to sit in the back, but they may be jostled by incoming people. There isn't even a restroom for diners to use. Nevertheless, the ample kitchen area churns out "101" varieties of sushi, all described on the dizzyingly long menu. (Number 101 is "create your own roll.") After staring at this menu for an awkwardly long time, I decided on a combination of spicy tuna rolls and five pieces of nigiri sushi. For $10 plus tax, I got eight large rolls of tuna muddled with Sriracha and nigiri pieces of salmon, shrimp, tuna, whitefish, and yellowtail. It was the most satisfying $10 worth of sushi I've had in Seattle. The raw fish pieces were so big I couldn't eat them in one bite like I usually can. The quality was very good and the price is hard to beat. The place is cash only for now. The menu is perhaps the most frustrating thing about Sushi Maki. I don't mind when a sushi restaurant adds its own inventive rolls to the menu, but of the 100 items on the menu at least 50 are unique to Sushi Maki. What's more, sushi-ya staples like octopus and squid don't appear on their own. For sushi lovers who know what they want, it seems unusual to be asked to go "off-menu" to get what is listed on those colorful sushi cheat-sheets you see at many Japanese restaurants -- including Sushi Maki! The quality of the fish is good and the size of the rolls is excellent. (Next time I have to try the spider roll -- it's so huge I'd need a knife and fork.) I'm only docking them a star for their overcomplicated menu that seems to force all order of combinations on people looking for simple sushi fare. UPDATE: I tried the spider roll and I was not impressed The soft-shell crab was too small, leaving the regular crabmeat (possibly imitation crabmeat) to dominate the flavor. The salmon nigiri sushi I ordered more than made up for it, though. read more

I'm not a lover of rolls, more of a sashimi guy. However, if I really want sashimi, I'll end up paying for it, so I don't mind getting inexpensive rolls as an alternative. Since when is bigger better? I realize that sushi was originally created to be cheap street eats, but to truly experience sushi is to be able to eat a variety of your chef's offerings and at sushi maki they make it difficult to eat anything because of the GIGANTIC SIZE. Imagine if Claim Jumper all of a sudden put sushi on the menu, that's Sushi Maki. It's like those damned taco bell commercials where the guy is shouting "I'm FULLLL!!!!!" I don't like to be stuffed. I like to taste things and be satisfied. Food is not just fuel. Your roll/nigiri hybrids are an abomination, Sushi Maki. Really good sushi! The price is right and everything was fresh and tasty. I was really impressed! The lunch special was an amazing deal with 2 rolls, 2 gyoza and miso soup.all for $18. The shrimp tempura was warm and crispy the way it should be and the California roll was large with lots of crab and avocado. Know that two rolls are probably enough for three normal-sized humans and order accordingly. The rolls are massive, but the seating area isn't, which doesn't seem to be a problem, as most of Sushi Maki's clientele take their orders to go. Though it can get a little cozy, I take a lot of pleasure stopping in on a Thursday night, pulling up a stool and plowing through some inexpensive sushi while I catch a bit of the NBA game on TNT, which the fellas behind the counter can be trusted to have on the flat screen. It's one of the few places in Seattle that won't treat you like a leper if you're eating alone. Also of note: they don't have a liquor license, so if you're looking to swill some sake or beer with your meal, you're going to have to do that swilling at home. read more

ARGH! Misleading reviewers! Here is what people need to know: If you like sushi from the market, occasionally go to a lower-end restaurant (like sushi land), and like tons of rice, then Sushi Maki will not disappoint! BUT...I happen to like sushi a lot and I was not pleased with this. I live right by the place and will never go again. The rolls are made up of lower grade fish wrapped in FAR too much rice (like, enough on one cut of a roll to cover the entire thing). Eating it is painful and sad. The nigiri pieces are stringy and bland; they're basically on-par with QFC nigiri. It's sad because their menu is one of the best in the city (it looks like Crazy Tokyo Sushi in L.A., but so so so disappointing). Go if you don't really like sushi that much. Damn you all, I wish I had read all the reviews before I went here for the first time last week. I ordered too much food. Yeah yeah, you can all say it... "I told you so". So ill say it to. If you go here, start with one roll and access your appitite. The rolls are easly twice the size as any other sushi restaurant in the country. So far this is the best take out/no frills sushi ive had in Seattle. The place is cute, the menu is huge 100+ rolls and the place is no bigger than the size of a king size bed. The best table.... haha ok the only table, in the house is outside under the tree. The wooden board that the sushi is served on, the bamboo chopsticks, the ceramic tea cup and the shade of the tree all make you feel like you are perched on the hill side in Japan on a sunny day. But soon enough that all gets spoiled as the trash truck plows down the street that your sitting at the edge of and the bus full of joy riding homeless people pass you. None the less, this is a must place for sushi to go, or for a fast lunch if you work in the neighborhood. We ordered the albacore sushi and the albacore delight. It was affordable but defiantly not the best tasting sushi I've ever had. Just looking at it, the albacore didn't look very fresh. It look abnormally pink. After bitting into it, my predictions were correct, it was not fresh. We asked for a side of ponzu sauce and the waitress told us it already had ponzu in it. If this was true, I could barely taste it. It must have been some watered down ponzu sauce. The place is tiny and the staff is kind. I was visiting Seattle and we decided to catch a show at Theater Schmeater nearby. All day we talked about sushi and this was close. We had the Chef's special roll to share, salmon sashimi and miso soup. Certainly the largest roll I've ever had. It's like the burrito of sushi rolls. The sashimi was excellent. It's definitely a family owned business and makes no attempt to hide it. I think this is the first time I've ordered a green tea from a Japanese restaurant and given an empty cup, a Kirkland Signature foil of green tea and pointed to the hot water dispenser. I never knew what good green tea Costco sold. What little we ate prevents me from giving a higher rating, but I'd be really happy having a sushi place like this in my neighborhood. read more

Sushi Maki delivered above and beyond our expectations today! We ordered take-out for lunch. I ordered the Seared Salmon and LOVED IT! My co-worker asked for a special ordered on the Tempura Roll, she is picky but absolutely loved this roll. We also tried the vegetarian Sun Lover roll with sun-dried tomatoes and avocados. Thank goodness I found Sushi Maki! Thanks yelpers! 101 delicious rolls and a few pieces of nigiri make Sushi Maki a true find. Its a wee bit hard to find (mostly because it is so small) but worth the challenge! As others have said the space sits six (maybe) very petite people. There is also a small waiting area outside (with IKEA table and chairs) which will come in handy this summer! Perhaps what impressed me the most about Sushi Maki is the incredible use of space! They should be on Oprah or something - it really is out of this world. Such small spaced used so well. I think I spent the time waiting (about five minutes) staring at the walls being amazed by the creativity! My two rolls were about $11 - very reasonable for the quality and creativity of the rolls. Sushi Maki is my most favorite Sushi place to go if I don't want to dine in. Their Rainbow Roll and Geisha Roll are AMAZING! One roll will fill you up till your stomach hurts. Definitely worth the price and they give you Miso Soup to sip on while you wait because sometimes it takes a while to create your order. They are very kind and patient. When the weather is nice you can dine outside at some tables. This is a very small hole in the wall so don't expect to take a huge group of people unless you're all going to get the food to go. Cal Anderson Park is near by so you could grab your order and go have a picnic at the park or maybe just chill on the curb with your eats. FYI - Suhia Maki only takes cash!
