I hope this place does well. I really do. The previous place was not bad but it was definitely one of those lower quality but higher quantity places. Since Sushi Kashiwa took over the decor inside is so much nicer. The overall feel of a sushi bar and restaurant seems authentic - not 100% but it's there. When the food came out, my first impression and thought was that we finally have a legit Japanese restaurant near our house and it's within a 5 minute drive. The presentation is the best I've ever seen in the South City/Pacifica/Daly City area however the taste didn't match it completely. It's still better than the former restaurant but for how it's presented you'd think it was full of flavor but it was actually lacking. The teriyaki sauce did not taste like teriyaki. There was no sweetness to it. It just seemed like a goop of cornstarch or flour mixed with some kind of soy sauce and something else. Definitely not your typically teriyaki sauce. So both the beef and salmon teriyaki were a little disappointing. It lacked good seasoning on both as well. Just a little bland. The sushi rolls were good. Not incredible but still better than the average. I'd come back to get the rolls and not the plates although sometimes I do want a good plate and not eat sushi. Service is great. Staff is always attentive and will refill your water constantly. I want to give them a few more tries and see if the seasoning and the teriyaki sauce will change. I really hope it does because they have a lot of potential. If you look at the photos, the food just looks incredible but in most cases it's lacking some outstanding flavor. read more

We went on a Saturday afternoon and we didn't have a reservation but they were still able to get us in even though it was a little packed. So if this place isn't owned by someone affiliated with the old Sushi 8 that was once here, I couldn't tell the difference. Thought I'd give this place a shot being as it's close to home and looked good from the Yelp pics. Looks are deceiving! Came in for lunch and ordered the Nigiri Lunch with a Salmon Skin Handroll and the Jalapeño Poppers. First, I was expecting 6 different pieces of Nigiri but what I got was two pieces each of three kinds of fish. Second the Handroll was way to crunchy for Salmon Skin. Now crunch is fine but this was cooked to the point that there was zero moisture in the skin. Thirdly, the jalapeño poppers felt like they had been pre-made and sitting in the fridge ready to be reheated. The meat felt over cooked and the tempura tasted stale, which is exactly what happens when you make tempura, put it in the fridge, and deep fry it again! At least the nigiri were a good size. Now If this place is trying to differentiate itself from what was here before, it has already lost. Ambience was nice, service was okay, but in the end it's another sushi place that fails to do Japanese cuisine well. In San Bruno the best we have is Amami on El Camino but alas they aren't open for lunch during the week. I won't be coming here again. read more

Although most of my reviews are extremely positive this one I had to let everyone know my experience. Two days ago before Thanksgiving ordered the sashimi tuna. It was off in color, not cold and had a fish smell however since I took it to go I felt obligated to eat it and only ate two pieces within 30 minutes of leaving the restaurant. I ended up with severe food poisoning for the last two days. If I ate other things after I would not have shared this. I just hope they really inspect there sashimi in the future. We had a couple of rolls which were okay, nothing great....I did have the Beef Teriyaki and I couldn't believe how tender the beef was...it was the best beef teriyaki I have had from a japanese restaurnt! I came here on a Sunday night with no reservation and this place was so packed compared to when it was 8 Sushi. It turns out that for their grand opening, they're offering 15% off your entire bill- what a steal! I ended up ordering the following dishes: * Rock roll sushi roll - $8 * Shrimp tempura roll - $8 * Udon with assorted tempura - $18 * Omakase Nigiri (11 pieces) - $46 First off, the fish was SO delicious and fresh. They don't put too much rice underneath the big slabs of fish, which is just the way I like it. The fish was bright and vibrant and totally worth the price for what you get. The udon noodle soup tasted different from the traditional versions I get; I just can't put my finger on it. Though, the tempura was fried well and had a nice crunch to it. Service was a bit slower trying to get extra napkins and tea but its because there were only two servers seating the entire restaurant. Food: I only had the unagi fried rice and chicken teriyaki. I honestly thought it was pretty good, but the temperature of the food (mainly the rice) wasn't as hot as I wanted it to be. This place just opened. I ordered the Omakase 11 pieces nigiri which is amazing! They have more types of white fish than some other sushi restaurants in peninsula. Kanpachi, Shima aji, kinmedai are the highlights! I'm not a big fan of salmon nigiri but this salmon is really good, perfect texture between the lean and belly. Also the soy sauce has been seasoned (slightly sweet) not that kinda of salty soy sauce directly out of the bottle. I'd suggest offering some gingers and fresh wasabi along with the plate.
