I pray my kids never go work here and ever have a manager that treats them the way I saw one of their staff members treated. This man used foul language yelling at one of his own employees. My husband and I have been craving sushi since not having it for a hot minute. Sushi gem happened to be the closest to us! It's located in a big plaza so of course there's always space for parking. Staff was super friendly and seated us quick. It didn't seem too busy at the time either. The menu is HUGE. There's pho, thai curry, various Chinese dishes and a wide range of sushi rolls from speciality rolls to regular rolls. We started off with spring rolls (2rolls) which came with well made peanut sauce (sweet and not watery at all! Just how I love it) but the rolls themselves for the size seemed very loosely wrapped and ingredients inside just spilled out. Almost all places that serve spring rolls normally give out 4 or 6 stuffed so this was a little disheartening but other than that sushi was great size/presentation wise and , duck was great, our server was awesome too. Came here for dinner, and got a dinner and a half! My boyfriend and I were hungry, but not super hungry by any means. So we sat down, and ordered crab rangoons, he got 4 sushi rolls, and I got bento box C. The portions are MASSIVE. 8 california roll pieces in my box, this included two pieces of tempura shrimp and veggies, with fried rice and chicken teriyaki, 3 pieces of fried dumplings, and a hot and sour soup. I could barely put a dent in what I ordered. My bf's sushi rolls came out to the size of specialty rolls. They were huge and he even had a hard time completely finishing his meal. My son and I both got very sick after eating here. We've eaten here several times with no issue so maybe they are going through some growing pains. That doesn't mean you can cut food quality or for the cooks to be lazy. One of those had to happen for us to get so sick from the food. read more

Yosake is decent but way too loud and always crowded and Bento box is delicious but way over priced with terrible service. Anyway our friends apparently go here a lot because all the staff knew them by name. The sushi here is always buy one get one free. What the actual fuck? Not complaining just surprised. My SO and I started with the pork gyoza and shared the Gem Roll and the Unforgettable roll.  We chose the gyoza steamed instead of fried. It was cooked perfectly and well seasoned. Both rolls were amazing. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and price. The rest of the menu looked delicious and I can't wait to go back to try the soups and pad thai. Family and I had dinner here the other evening. Same atmosphere as previous ownership. Not a bad thing. The food and service was good. Overall we decided we would continue to eat here. The sushi was well prepared and tasted good. My son ordered the sesame chicken which was very tasty. We also ordered the bang bang shrimp as an appetizer which was also good. This is the only Japanese Thai eatery within 10 - 15 miles of our home. Moving from Hawaii, there's no doubt we are a little spoiled and used to have lots of options with this kind of food. As such, we are really happy to have a great spot nearby to enjoy some Thai or Japanese favorites. I generally get the Vegetarian Panang Curry and my husband loves a couple rolls - the American Dream is his favorite. We've also enjoyed the Edamame, salad and appetizers. Everything is fresh and the service - super friendly. I've even been able to get the Fresh Spring Rolls with tofu instead of shrimp ! A great cocktail menu, nice selection of beer and wine add to the draw for this place, as well as the amazing hot Sake. My only reason for only giving it 4 stars is that there's only 2 special vegetarian sushi roll options, and then the usual. (which is strange because the menu has so many vegetable dishes.) But if we want that, we just go to Surf City or Wilmington where some places have a lot more variety for that special need. read more

Warm, welcoming atmosphere. Big bar area as well as cozy, comfortable booths. I chose a 2 person booth and it was quiet and felt semi-private. I was greeted very quickly by a pleasant waitress, and had drinks on the table with the same promptness. I ordered edamame as an appetizer. It arrived within 5 minutes and was cooked to perfection, and not overly salted. For the main entree I ordered the drunken noodles. The meal came with choice of salad or soup. I picked miso soup. It arrived appropriately, a few minutes after the edamame and before the entree, it was warm and savory. The main meal arrived with perfect timing, the noodles and veggies were simultaneously firm yet tender, not at all mushy! The waitress was busy but observant and prompt. My brother, my father, and I made a late-night trip to satisfy a (slightly inebriated) craving for some good sushi. Don't worry, we had a designated driver. We called ahead a rather large order about 45minutes before their closing time. We got there a little early so we sat at the bar to have a quick drink before taking our sushi home and devouring it. The bar was nice. It was quiet for a holiday weekend but I enjoy that. The drinks were mixed well and the bartender was very kind, even though I can tell we came in as she was trying to get ahead on her closing side-work. She was still extremely accommodating and very friendly. I liked her. Our sushi was ready so we paid our tab, collected our food and chatted with the 2 men who were manning the counter to ring us up. They too ere extremely friendly and I wished we were able to stay and chat longer but they were closing very soon. Being from a larger city that has SO many amazing sushi places, I was honestly skeptical of how I would like the quality of the sushi. I was very pleasantly surprised that it was every bit as good a some of the best sushi I have had. The rice was well seasoned, not too sweet and fluffy, not mushy. The fish was excellent, tasted clean and fresh with no hints of "fishy-ness". All in all, it was just as good as most places I have tried, and I am extremely picky about my sushi. I come to topsail a couple times a year to vacation and I'm super excited to now have a fantastic sushi option that I didn't know about before. If you're on the fence, give them a try. That is not the case for Sushi Gem, this place is right down the street, thank god, and the sushi rolls are awesome, our favorite is the "woman in love". Enjoyed this "Sushi Gem" today! Well, I'm not the sushi eater, my husband is, he really liked his sushi picks. The choices for non-sushi eaters were awesome as well. I had some veggie tempura as an appetizer, and the Chicken Lo Mein as my main course, so good with big servings! Our waitress (Tracy) was very nice and attentive. Lovely, clean, kid friendly restaurant. I even liked the music they had playing, some Bee Gee's and Blondie!
