When we went the sushi was fresh, with a lot to choose from. The regular food is good too.

This place is pretty solid. They have a nice variety of rolls to choose from, which is really great. The service is very quick also. Every time we go there, we always receive top tier service from the staff. They have a nice base that is located centrally in the restaurant. All of our rolls were delicious and the soups and amazing! Sometime I even get 2 soups, a miso and a hot and sour! Salads always have a sharp crunch and fresh ingredients. Met a friend for dinner. I'm not a fan of sushi, but the menu had plenty of items to choose from! I ordered the hot and spicy soup and the sweet and sour chicken. I did not love the soup, just not to my taste. Nothing wrong with it, I just didn't want a salad. For my main course I got the sweet and sour chicken which was delicious! It has been awhile since I stopped in here due to a really bad experience last time The physical menu was very strange and I had no idea that it even opened up until my server told me. They don't offer any lunch sushi specials and I thought the prices were kinda high so I opted for the chicken lettuce wraps which were pretty good. Im a little confused though because in the description on their menu it says spicy beef broth, and the broth is not spicy by any means? But either way it was great! The sushi is tasty but very small, and therefore, extremely overpriced. Paying $13 for what probably equals less than one whole shrimp, tempura flakes, and rice is bananas. I am so disappointed and disgusted at the owners behavior at Sushi Gem. There was a new system installed for ordering the food and the kind young hostess was trying to put the information in. The owner was belittling this young girl and making horrible faces causing her look nervous and scared. Watching this interaction was heart wrenching and the hostess just took the abuse. She was trying to explain what she did so it could be fixed and he just pushed her aside and was so rude. With no mind he had customers watching. My conscience could not sit by and not say something to him. I verbalized that I felt he was being rude and she was trying to learn and he needed to do a better job and quit with the ridicule. He looked at me with rage and argued with me not acknowledging his behavior at all and ending with a loud voice "he was doing his job". I told him to apologize to her and that young lady said "it's ok". How horrible for this kid trying to learn her job, taking the abuse and basically apologizing for his lack of character. Shame on you owner of Shushi Gem , after 10 years of supporting your restaurant I will not be back. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by this place. Our waitress was great and always kept our glasses full. I had the miso soup. It was good and flavorful. The sushi was excellent and they have lots to choose from. We had the California roll, tuna roll, bagel roll and the sweet Mac roll. They were all very flavorful and fresh tasting. It did seem they have some maintenance issues in the restaurant. The booth I sat in was ripped and the paint all the wall had some damage. The lady that was tending bar the last time needed a lot of improvement so I've not been seated at the bar again. Food is good/average and the people have been nice. We live very close to Sushi Gem and often get them when we just do not want to cook at home. Our normal meal includes a kids chicken lo mein (last for at least two meals), an order of chicken lettuce wraps, hot and sour soup, and a kung pao chicken. All of which are delicious. The sizes are pretty large, however, I will say the prices are a little high. Their sushi is also pretty tasty. We have had a large variety and never been disappointed. We have only ate inside once, we normally get it to go. The inside is pretty spacious with a nice bar and they a cute fish tank that my daughter always loves to gawk at. read more

Take out from Sushi Gem was wonderful! Some of the best House LoMein that I've had although at $17.95 it is pricey(got 3 meals out of it). The sesame chicken and egg rolls were also very good. The food was great. Came with my family after my oldest daughter's track meet in the area. I got the Thai Basil chicken, husband got teriyaki shrimp stir fry, my mother in law got the general tso's chicken, my oldest got the Mongolian beef, my youngest got a sushi and sashimi platter, and our little niece got beef Lomein. My husband's only complaint was the portion size being a little small. The only other issue with this restaurant is the ladies bathroom. I understand it's a bathroom, but there was a terrible odor in there from the time we got there until we left. I think they have some kind if plumbing issues there, because I feel like this was the case when I was there 5 years ago, too, and it's still a similar odor in there. read more

Okay, wow!!! Can I give 10 stars? Get the Lemon Salmon sushi! I didn't expect to find such a delicious and friendly-staffed sushi and Asian cuisine place in a Hampstead strip mall. I drive by here ALL THE TIME and we finally went in for an early dinner. I was blown away by the attention to our table by our sweet server and the food was fresh and taste was on point. I would tag along with them for sushi but then I quickly realized that HARRIS TEETER sushi is SO much FRESHER and overall wayyy better tasting! When you walk in there's booths and a very nice bar area..on other side is sushi bar and tables with beautiful decor and a huge fish tank !! It's so much bigger inside than it looks from parking lot! I ordered pork dumplings fried they came out light and crispy and great taste!! My entree was the woman in love roll! It had such light and great flavor. Spicy tuna, avacado and cucumber inside with albacore and spicy Mayo with scallion on top.. pieces were really big and rice was perfect..sushi can be ruined by few things and one is the cooking of the rice!! I love this place!! I have heard about it for years and finally made a stop with my family. There were 9 of us and we were greeted with smiles and had great service throughout. We ordered the sushi boat with 8 different types of sushi rolls. Some one ordered the hibachi steak and it was so tender it fell apart in your mouth. This is a really good sushi place in the area! Visited here recently for lunch and tried the Dynamite roll and Salmon Lemon roll... both were very yummy. The Dynamite was a tempura roll and the salmon lemon tasted very fresh. Our server was so nice and helpful. They have a really good homemade spicy Mayo that is recommended with the rolls! We also tried the Pad Thai with chicken and a kids shrimp lo mein. The Pad Thai was really delicious! I came here with my daughter & her boyfriend & they have been here several times & say that this is always the case.
