My son and I stopped by here for lunch, and we both really enjoyed our meals. We started with gyoza appetizer, which was a tasty start. I ordered the Katsu Donburi, and it was delicious. The katsu was flavorful, and the rice was so fluffy and perfectly cooked. My son ordered the Simba Roll and Golden California Roll. The Simba Roll was definitely my favorite, it was so good, full of flavor, and the presentation was very fun. Everything we had was fresh and tasty, and it made for a really nice lunch together. The service was great and fast. We will definitely be back to try more of the menu.

I stood in line at the food court in the mall. I started conversing with a couple of nurses who recommended this establishment as the best in town. Therefore, of course, I had to try it. ***DO NOT USE APPLE MAPS. USE GOOGLE MAPS!! Using Apple Maps resulted in me circling the area TWICE until I used Google Maps.*** FOOD: omg their meals are so reasonably priced especially their omakase. I don't think I've ever met a $30 omakase. The sushi rice was nicely blended. Strange how there wasn't wasabi instantly included in the nigiri. Fake wasabi provided on the side. Yellow ginger. Nice cuts of fish. Tonkatsu very dry. Completely disliked how the sauce was automatically included on top... I wished it was given on the side. Wished there was a lemon slice provided as well. Miso soup was not good at all. Salad dressing was very appetizing. SERVICE: Simple and straightforward. No trouble given. VIBEZ: Typical modern Japanese decor with the added touch of figures. Casual. Great for large groups. Located in downtown Salinas. Parking scattered but free 90 minutes parking (8am to 4pm). Would I come back? Yes! I'm excited to try their other offerings, particularly their rolls.

Right off the bat, the rice-to-fish ratio is amazing. The salmon really stood out to me. You can tell it's good quality when it doesn't smell or taste fishy. I'm usually not a fan of raw salmon and tend to get tuna, but this was actually really good. All the fish were soft and "creamy". This was my 3rd-4th time dining here, and I've had a good experience so far.

we are from LA and probably spoiled sushi snobs but this was almost inedible for me. the salad was good. the coconut shrimp tempura was so burnt we had to get a replacement because we could not even taste it. the second batch tasted good so i still had hope. the issue is the sushi is not fresh. it's all very fishy and wet and unappealing. the rice is too hard and you can feel each individual piece. the seaweed was chewy and fishy. the salmon sashimi was in a horrible and overly salty sauce, which was not great with the already fishy yet bland salmon. the scallop wasnt bad. the escolar was very watery and tasteless compared to the ones i have had. $110 later, i would say it was super disappointing if you have ever had good, quality sushi. i think the good reviews are from locals who dont know they can have better.

It was very busy when we went but the person serving us was nice. It's a cute place, a little on the small side, but the decorations are cute. The food was good. I don't see okonomiyaki on many menus so it's great to see that. If only they had onigiri it would be perfect.

Absolutely adore sushi Daruma. Always a hit and you can't go wrong with anything here. The rolls are decent size and priced. Appreciate small businesses like this. For no wait come right when they open because it gets busy quick! Their service is also great. Food comes out quickly and delicious

I had such a great experience here! The service was super fast and everyone was really friendly. My food came out quickly, fresh, and honestly the sushi was bomb. Everything tasted so good and the presentation was on point too. Definitely one of my new favorite sushi spots can't wait to come back!

Food was excellent. I got the hamachi kama and it was grilled to perfection. The sauce that came with it was great. It was a delivery and still arrived warm and was not overly dry or otherwise. Only issue was that there was not any soy sauce for my rolls. The alaska roll and futo maki were both great. The selection here is like no other in the area and i was thoroughly impressed with my meal. Please just read the notes on orders. Thank you

We were in Salinas for the day and we decided to check this new place out. We had tea and it was served in this cute kettle and wooden tea cups. We tried sushi, ramen, and their Bento Box and it was all delicious with large portions and very filling. The presentation was great too. The server was great except that towards the end we weren't checked on a lot and we needed more tea and water and boxes and wanted to order dessert and all that. It was good though.

Came in the Sunday night of the Light Parade, and ordered the dinner combo with Teriyaki salmon, gyoza and halibut (I believe). Everything was delicious. Considering how quickly the place filled upon opening at 5pm (due to the crowds outside), my meal arrived within a reasonable amount of time, and was complimented nicely by the miso soup & side salad. Would definitely come back to try the actual sushi next time. Inside is cute and cozy; make sure you arrive early or call in your order ahead of time, as it fills up quickly.

Been coming here since it opened. Always get an excellent meal with excellent service. My wife loves this place. One thing we always get is their appetizer shumai. Absolutely incredible. A real palate tease. My only issue is that there is an odd amount (5) and there is two of us. Place gets busy every evening of the week but the wait time is not bad and so worth it. read more

Totally worth the drive! This place is so good, Everyone is very nice. The owner Dennis is such an amazing person. Great with all his customer's makes everyone feel very welcome. The food is always so fresh. A couple of my favorites are. Spicy Edamame, Baby shrimp sticks, Nori-Taco, Tonkotsu Ramen , Miso ramen is also another good one. Lastly, I order Omakase Nige special! The food was disappointing. Three of us had a box. The salmon teriyaki was very thin and overcooked as was the beef teriyaki. The rice in each box was barely room temperature. The waitress brought more servings of rice, still not hot. Finally the third try my rice was steaming. The service was excellent. read more

We do takeout often from Daruma because the quality of raw fish was good. But this time, it was quite disappointing. Tuna was fishy and dry! Not sure about a name of this off-white fishy was also fishy and not fresh. Plus, tilapia sushi was not moist, very dry, apparently it had been exposed to air quite some time. Only salmon was fine. I once conversed with the owner/chef in the restaurant to let him know that we were satisfied with their food. I feel violated this time. The food was bad. read more

Me and my husband attempted to eat here two days in a row and they turned us away 30 minutes before closing both days and their doors were locked 5 minutes later by 9:35pm. They used the excuse that they were slow and have been turning people away for the last hour to close early. We are big sushi eaters and we're really excited to have our date night and make this our sushi spot. After being rejected twice I will never give this place my business and will encourage others to do the same. read more

Every time we come here, we have a group of AT LEAST 9 people. Never have a problem getting a table, even on a FRIDAY night! I mean, we waited about 10 mins, but it was worth the wait. Sushi is EXCELLENT, service was EXCELLENT. Will ALWAYS come here! read more

More like Sushi drama. Sushi chefs were arguing with each other, not worried about the customers sitting on tables next to them. Servers running around like they forgot to turn off the stove. The restaurant was only 30%full. The service was horrible, we waited for 20 minutes on the table with no menus, water, plates, or server. Even when we decided to leave, two servers passed by us without bothering to ask why we are leaving. The food looked bad and discolored, fish was clearly not fresh. Do yourself a favor, go to Patria three doors down for an amazing experience. read more

Was planning to celebrate a birthday with a party of 10 people here. This business outright refused to accommodate. NO EXCEPTIONS. We were even willing to divide our party into smaller groups. So fair warning if you have a large family. Very disappointed with the attitude of the people here. Replying back to Sushi Daruma: It was understood of your policy of first come first serve vs reservations. It was understood your need to turn tables. But your need to blame the customer for not knowing the size of their party is a bit of a joke. We were hosting people from other states and wanted them to experience your establishment. Your business failed but we went to a restaurant that was more than accommodating. Not to embarrass you but they too were busy, packed, and understaffed. Yet they were able to make it work. read more

Sushi Daruma dishes are hit or miss. You should stick with the sushi instead. Over the years the lunch or dinner options have gotten down in quality and taste. The fish dinner was not very appetizing and the rice was soapy. (Like they cooked in a soap filled rice cooker). Chicken was uncooked / raw for the teriyaki chicken dinner. I actually got sick afterwards. Service depends on who's working; not by how many customers they have. Can be slow at times and other times very prompt. Atmosphere is open and clean. read more

Very great ambience and friendly staff. The menu offered a wide variety of sushi dishes. My server, Thu, had a wide depth of knowledge of the menu. I had asked for recommendations and she recommended the Spicy Lover's roll. I had ordered the Spicy Lover's and Dragon roll. Both were delicious and I highly recommend it for those who enjoy unagi rolls. I will definitely be back! read more

Best sushi restaurant in town! Fresh rolled sushi, huge variety, and their combo dinners are so good and reasonably priced! Great food great service. Every time!!! Only place we go now!! Downfall is it's small, if you have a party of 7-8, there is only one big table available to seat you. Go early!!! read more

Service was good but the food was disappointing. The beef teriyaki was tough and chewy,and the chicken teriyaki was mid at best.They definitely need to improve their meat vendor. The tempura was ok. I can't speak for the sushi as I didn't order any.Overall I probably won't go here again. read more

Let's start with the good parts about this restaurant, service is good, the sushi rolls, and freshness of the fish is good. It's worth coming here to hang out with friends, grab some drinks and eat good sushi. Now for the bad: DO NOT GET THE RAMEN. This is not exaggerated, it's not ramen. The broth wasn't edible, it tasted and looked like heated up dish water. Unfortunately, it made me and my wife send BOTH of our bowls back to the kitchen. read more

Such a good new spot! Food is delicious. I haven't had the sushi but went in for the tonkotsu ramen and it was delicious. Also the gyozas were amazing! It's a great addition to old town salinas hope to see more cool restaurants like this open in the future. Aside from the amazing food the service was fast, even though it was dinner on a Friday night. Definitely a must try! read more

Went to dinner with my family and my teacher from Japan. Food was excellent, great flavors and portions were about right for the price. -1 star simply because it took almost an hour with hungry kiddos waiting for our food from the time we ordered it. It is possible the day we went they were short handed as it looked like there was only one chef working that day. read more

I took my son and daughter for their first sushi meal and it was absolutely wonderful! We were able to sit outside with the terrific view of downtown Salinas. The fish was absolutely fantastic. Super fresh. I think I had about the best dragon roll ever! Mina was our server and took great care of us. I will be back for sure and highly recommend this place. read more

The food was very "meh". Nothing terribly good or bad. It wasn't good enough for me to go back. I think many of the Japanese restaurants in Salinas are pretty sub standard because they don't have actually sushi chefs to take pride in what they put out. At this location, the fish wasn't even fresh! The color and smell of the fish was very off. They need to have a better quality fish to be a good sushi place. read more

The food here is amazing! I have had take our many times and also ate inside many times. This place is busy cause the food and the service is great! Ashley was our waitress. She was amazing! Very attentive, always checking on us to see if we needed anything. They were super busy but Ashley still took the time to check on us to make sure we were happy. I also noticed Ashly would check on all of her other customers too. I would highly recommend Sushi Daruma, Never disappoint's. Food is fresh and service is great!! read more

Great food, usually bustling with a good vibe. I love that a Bento Box (called dinner special) is available at all times, not just lunch like many shops. The donburi bowl is generous enough to fill a hungry teenager. Also the kid bento boxes are a reasonable price. Recently discovered the Maui Wowe special roll and will be back for more. Be sure to dress in layers, since it can get chilly if seated at the front of the shop by the door. read more

My wife and I were so pleased - We ordered to go for the first time and it was a great experience - The staff on the phone were so helpful with the ordering and took time to explain exactly what to expect - The food was ready on time as promised and the transaction was seamless and we felt very safe and appreciated The Poke Salad was exceptional - It was a good size and loaded with fish and fresh greens My wife particularly liked the Wakame Salad - She loves seaweed and it did not disappoint The Hamachi and Maguro were delicious and had a good balance of fish vs rice We particularly like the Big Daddy Roll All of the accompaniments were included as well as the extra ginger we requested This is seriously good Japanese food and we will definitely order again and look forward to dining inside their restaurant when rules ease up read more

I've visited Sushi Daruma three times in the past month, hoping each time would be better than the last. Unfortunately, my experiences have been consistently disappointing and this is coming from local within the area. On my first visit, despite it being a slow Tuesday night, it took a whopping 20 minutes just to get water on the table. My group and I waited patiently, only to find the same issue on a Thursday visit. Again, the restaurant wasn't busy, yet we waited another 20 minutes for drinks before leaving out of frustration. Thinking perhaps the third time would be the charm, we returned on a busy Saturday evening. Surprisingly, drinks were being served promptly to other tables. We placed our order, but only one drink arrived after 10 minutes for our group of four. We never got our other drinks and didn't even bother to inform the server since this was always an issue the previous times. The food took an additional 45 minutes to arrive, and when it did, the baked and deep-fried rolls were cold. When we politely informed our waitress about the issue, we were told nothing could be done, and we would still be charged for the food. This lack of accountability and poor customer service is unacceptable. Overall, I cannot recommend Sushi Daruma. There are plenty of other sushi spots in town that offer a welcoming atmosphere, exceptional customer service, and most importantly, better quality sushi. Save yourself the disappointment and dine elsewhere. read more

If I could, I'd indulge in their sushi daily it's simply that good! Their ramen is an absolute hidden gem, rich and flavorful, deserving way more recognition. My boyfriend and I love this place! We've been here at least 5 or 6 times because the price is great and the food is even better! It's definitely a new go-to for us! The staff is always friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. We usually stop by on Saturday afternoons and try the lunch special. The restaurant has a lot of tables (mostly 4 tops), but I've seen them push tables together for larger groups (probably best to call ahead in that case). The decorations are cute, tasteful, and fun, with a mix of studio ghilbli images and samurai themed art. They are usually playing early 2000/2010 music hits which are familiar to me.

We came right at opening (noon), and there were only two servers at the time, but Elaine was handling most of the tables with ease.
