The food was good. Despite this tiny little town in Prundale, Ca this small tucked away corner restaurant, the flavor did not fall short, not to mention the portions were HUGE!!! I got a combination plate: Sweet & Sour & Kung Pao Chicken w/Bbq Pork Fried Rice Combination Plate (for one) Comes with: Complimentary Egg Roll, Fried Wontons & soup of the day. The food was piping hot and greasy... just how I love my Chinese food. I know for some this might not be a good thing, but you better believe that it was Good! The place is not elegant nor fancy at all. It's small so the restaurant lacks storage. Therefore making the front counter cluttered looking. I was there dining by myself and noticed that at all the orders coming in were from locals that placed orders over the phone and online. Obviously the locals know this place has good Chinese food. Jim's is an unassuming storefront in a strip mall just off 101. It seems like a family owned business and the service was home-like and great, I really felt welcome there. On top of that, the food was absolutely stupendous! Make no mistake, this is mostly Chinese-American food, but the execution is fantastic. Panda Express is like leftovers scrounged from a dumpster compared to Jim's. Owners are always there I'm sure why TOP notch! This time had the sweet & sour chicken and beef & broccoli so yummy! The won ton soup has a crunch in the won tons I had never had before! First time trying Jim's Restaurant upon this visit! I ordered garlic tofu and vegetables with a side of white rice and the meal was very savory and flavorful. I ordered takeout, but received my food fast and the woman who answered was very kind. In terms of vegetable options, there isn't many. With my dish, I did expect more tofu but it was still amazing nonetheless. Overall, I will likely return to this restaurant and give it another try to get the full experience. We came here last minute around 8 pm to eat with the family thanks to yelp. And let me tell you the food was delicious everything was so good and made fresh. I loved it and will definitely come back and recommend this place. The service was also great. Very nice and the atmosphere was relaxing and very family friendly. All the food was great we ordered 5 different plates and the portions were a good size. We were a total of 6 and still had food left. Really good and fresh American Chinese food that is affordable and huge portion sizes! We came in while we charged our car, and got the meal for two which includes some appetizers and entrees for $18 a person. It was so much food! My favorites were the beef and broccoli which was fresh and not soggy like some places, and the fried rice. The chicken chow mein was good too and the chicken was moist and perfectly cooked, not dry at all. I wish we lived closer! The inside is cutely decorated but nothing special, and it's very casual. New owners since Sept 2021 and far, far BETTER in terms of culinary execution that the previous one. If I were to review the last ownership, I'd probably say things that I would regret as to how pathetic it became. A Chinese place "serving" beef Wellington - 'nuff said. There is more in the cuisine that would easily mock this "refined" English dish. But somehow, I found myself here again recently and noticed a MAJOR difference in the flavors and the way the food was plated in my to-go orders. I remember sitting in my car driving back thinking that I only stopped by since it was convenient en route to satiate my demonic cravings again BUT something isn't the same. I actually pulled out the next exit and examined what I had and immediately noticed the shift in culinary execution. It's obvious in Chinese cuisine. Either you have it or you just don't. Whoever is cooking now DOES. DM if you need me to explain. True Chinese cooking has many steps to achieve the final dish. Ironically, as "unrefined" everyone says it is...there are more steps than even the French/Italian practices. That said, FAR smaller menu, a more traditional take (thank you for not having beef Wellington or carbonara on your menu - WTF) and proper execution of Chinese techniques and flavors that should be introduced to society to help understand the deep extent of refinement and history this cuisine actually is. I smile as I bite into wonton chips and his house made sauce to accompany it. Fried beef slices. Blanched broccoli. Sauce. Mix and stir. Velveted chicken. Sautéed veg. Sauce. Mix and stir. I'll continue. But I won't. Most cuisines don't even have separate steps. We were big fans of the previous owners of this restaurant for many many years, when it was a Chinese/American food restaurant. They moved to Marina and opened ANNIES HOUSE to great success. They sold it 2+ Years ago to this wonderful family who have created their own personal take on fine Chinese dining. The food is fresh, made from scratch, and delightfully delicious. Probably the best Chinese food in Prunedale. In my opinion, of course. The portions are generous and reasonably priced.
