I had a great experience at Harumi Restaurant in Seaside! The sushi was good. One thing I really appreciated is that they offer lunch and dinner bento boxes even on weekends. Most places only have lunch specials Monday through Friday, so this was a huge plus. I ordered the bento box with salmon and sashimi (no rice), along with the Big Sur roll, also without rice. Everything was absolutely delicious and customized perfectly to my request. A special shoutout to Elaine, our server--she was amazing! We came right at opening (noon), and there were only two servers at the time, but Elaine was handling most of the tables with ease. Found this restaurant on yelp and decided to give it a try. We went on a weekday afternoon right at 4:50ish to find out the are closed until 5:00pm. No biggie so we walked around the plaza until they reopened at 5 PM and were promptly seated. They have a good selection of items on the menu with some specials. The hostess was very nice and attentive. The food however, was just OK. I did not particularly love my sushi roll as it had way too much cream cheese that overpowered the roll and everything else was just average. We ended up taking about half of the food to go because we didn't love how it tasted unfortunately. Normally, when the food is delicious, my husband will clean his plate. This time we found it to be a little bland and not flavorful. It was, however, fresh. The atmosphere of the place is nice however it gets pretty busy around 5:30pm. I think overall based on the yelp reviews, it was worth the try, but will continue to try out other sushi spots in the area. read more

visiting Monterey and craving for sushi. found this place that has a decent sushi bar. 3 sushi chefs, 1 asian chef who doesn't speak much English. most orders are run by the hispanic chef who spoke fluent english. they do have a combination of sushi rolls and other typical Japanese menu items. we don't usually order rolls as we felt it's too much rice to fill the tummy too fast. but we still ended up ordering 2 rolls, lana roll and protein roll. then we ordered a tonkatsu ramen to share at the end. the rolls were average, portion was similar to what we're used to from SoCal. price is higher but not by much. when the ramen came, hubby and I both thought it was good portion in a large bowl. lots of chashu pork belly (5 pieces). soup was very flavorful. we were surprise to see that we got charged additional $4 for extra chashu (which we didn't order but waitress's english had a strong accent so there might have been a misunderstanding?) but $4 for 5 pieces of chashu? we wondered how many pieces comes with the original order? read more

We were nearby playing pinball at Lynn's Arcade and got hungry. I asked and was told that Harumi was a solid choice, that many of their regular pinball players liked the restaurant. Often, when I'm going out to eat at a Japanese Restaurant, I'll either go all sashimi or get an American style Bento Box. Occasionally, I'll get Ramen or Udon. It's not unusual for me to get Kama, Tempura, Deep Fried Oysters, Agadashi Tofu or Karaage for appetizer. Today, we had a nice lunch at an Indian Buffet and just weren't "that" hungry. It also bugged me a bit that there was a sign in the window advertising for a Sushi Chef. It's not like there's a dearth of unemployed Sushi Chefs walking around the Central Coast looking for their next restaurant job. I ordered a three-item bento with Tonkatsu, Shrimp Tempura and Sashimi. The bento also came with Rice, Miso Soup and Salad. Instead of a more traditional partitioned bento box, it all came on a plate. I was right to be concerned about the sign looking for a Sushi Chef. I got three pieces each of Maguro and Salmon. The serving temperature was good and that's the only positive statement I can make. Presentation is always an important part of plating Japanese food. My fish had an odd appearance, was not properly blocked and simply cut in strange shapes. Short and chunky pieces rather than neat uniform slices. The Tempura batter was hard although the Shrimp themselves were good. The Tonkatsu had zero fat which made it dry. It too had a hard crust. I ate about 1/2 my meal and took the rest to go. She ordered Saba Shioyaki Dinner. It came with two pieces of mackerel on a sizzling platter. The presentation was good, but the fish stuck to the platter, was dry, and had way more bones than it should have. She also took leftovers. It was a passable dinner, but not one that we would want to repeat. read more

Looking for Sushi, this local restaurant can be an option. Not super special but the food is pretty good and the staff are friendly. Upon entering most Japanese restaurants you receive a greeting and we were not. In fact we were ignored for a good 5 minutes. Once we were acknowledged we got to choose the table we liked. The staff quickly took our drink order: black tea. And we were left to peruse the extensive menu. Careful to not order too much we opted for the Avocado appetizer and it came well before our main order of Sushi. The avocado was creamy with a nice charred crust that was quite tasty. We all ordered our own Sushi rolls: California (a stand-by), The Big Boy and mine was a combination of salmon and tuna, called The Volcano Roll comes fried. They arrived fresh and with generous slices. Our server Yvonne disappeared but was replaced by others. The bill came to $80.00 with tax and tip which seemed a bit pricey with no alcohol or dessert added. Likely going to look around for a more memorable experience but Harumi Sushi can be counted on to deliver when one is in the mood for some basically good food. We came here for lunch on a rainy day, this is a hidden gem! Prices are reasonable and their bento portion size is pretty big. We ordered the 3 entree bento box. They did not disappoint, the tempura variety is very good. The gyoza are plentiful. The katsu was not over cooked. Bento box also came with salad and miso soup which got me full. We also tried a few nigiri, tako wasabi was excellent, bay scallops was fresh, rainbow roll was average. To our surprise they have bluefin kama available which we ordered immediately since not all sushi restaurant has this item readily available. Service was very tentative. We had to pack our bento boxes for dinner. We are really happy to find this place. Restaurant do charge 18% for 5 of us. The black cod with miso marinade appetizer was delicious! I've had this at other restaurants and had to try it here. Great flavor throughout the dish, on the fish, the asparagus, and the mushrooms. I'm not a mushroom lover but these were delicious and cooked to where they were still with a "bite" . This appetizer isn't listed on the printed menu, but is listed on the specials board. It's been listed the last few months. The black cod was soft and flaky, tender from the marinade. Parts of the outer edges were a bit carmelized from the cooking. The food is great, VERY GREAT! My personal favorite is the chicken katsu and Hamachi Nigiri. those items are TO DIE FOR. I love harumi. The service is great - Very fast! We got a table in 1-3 minutes, only when it is not busy. When it is busy expect a wait of 5-10 minutes, and on very busy days 10-20-30 mins. The ambiance is peaceful and clean. We got our food in about 5-10 minutes, and VERY GOOD. I def recommend for people and families looking for a clean place with great food. Best sushi in monterey. I asked about what the upcharge for escolar might be on a roll and was told "shouldnt be more than $4", so decided not to even check. We really liked the Js Gone Wild roll the best! It had a great combination of flavors with the smoked salmon, torched scallop and sauces. Totally worth the price. The Big Sur #2, which comes with cucumber instead of rice, was pretty good but lacked flavor and for $18.50 was only 5 pieces. We enjoyed the Eternal Sunshine too and had was flavorful. Second time there, visits many years apart, thought we'd give it another chance, and still don't like it. We ordered lunch specials, two items. The food was just out-of-the-box, i.e. prepared by a food service and passed through a heating device before landing on the plate. The "shrimp tempura" was not puffy and light, it was heavily breaded, and the shrimp inside was a skinny sliver. The chicken katsu, ditto--very thin, dry, scanty piece of chicken inside heavily breaded coating. Chicken teryaki was the most obviously premade item, with faux grill marks on it! The gyoza were also from a bag, probably from Costco, and were dried out and tough. The sashimi was slimy and fishy tasting. We didn't try the sushi, but we also won't be going back to do so. read more
