    California roll with REAL CRAB - this is so simple and perfect I want to go back for more, 2 hours later.

    This little place is cozy, comfortable, clean and the sushi was fantastic. Miso soup and prawn tempura starters. Everything was served by a wonderful chef who really knew her stuff. I would go back, in fact, I want to return for some of the bibimbap or Korean ramen. Do not pass up a chance to visit Sushi Coen :)

    Walking around Vancouver you'll see one million inexpensive sushi joints. Sushi Coen is just another among many, presenting no compelling reason for you to run across town for a visit. I popped in for a visit when they'd not been open long and found it satisfied, not as a destination restaurant, but as a neighborhood place. Vancouver-ites live right there in the heart of the city so lucky for Sushi Coen, they have a lot of neighbors. So, what comprises an "inexpensive" sushi joint? Think Sushi Combo for $9 Canadian ($7 US). Think a uniquely delicious Spicy Tuna Roll for $3 Canadian (about $2.25 US). With one exception (mackerel tasted not great) this meal was completely satisfying. Service was sweet, with my Japanese waiter asking if I'd like more miso soup after I'd finished off my bowlful, an offer not generally heard. He'd also never heard the phrase "hit the spot" which I used to describe to him my post-meal satisfaction level. So, it's possible that he's as new to town as Sushi Coen. This place isn't doing anything that half of Vancouver already has in practically every block but that doesn't mean that I don't wish it were in my town, doing just what they do and at those prices. I do. Sushi Coen hits the spot.

    This place is a little Gem just off the the Burrard Bridge. Location of the restaurant is a bit off the grid of downtown center. So for that reason many people would not know this place exist. If you write a yelp review or leave a comment you get a free gyoza with your meal. So I came here with my friend. We both pretty much got the samething. I got the Sashimi combo for $8 and a chopped scallop cone for $3. Prices are very reasonable and yes its a pretty good deal. Also on top the free gyoza. I don't like spicy food and the gyoza was spicy so I had 1.5 pieces. I should have told them in advance not to put siracha sauce on it. So at the end the owner thought their gyoza was yucky and asked if it tasted bad. I told them there were nothing wrong its just that its too spicy and I burn while eating it. She looked relief. I like the choped scallop cone. Its very fresh. Sashimi combo came with tempura and california roll and 5 pieces Sashimi. The Sashimi are not like giant pieces but are ok. The place is ran by Korean and I always thing Korean makes good Japanese food. This place worked out well because my friend rides a bike and she gets to park right outside the restaurant. Yes she works downtown as well. So this place is definitely a plus for her. I will come back one day.

    I ordered avocado roll, veggie roll, avocado kappa roll and edamame. Most of the edamame were not done and the rice was super sticky so the rolls broke all the time.

    Great quality food for good price! It's a small place for a sit down but nonetheless friendly service. we ordered some rolls, tapas and sashimi (pictured - one piece eaten) and everything was very delicious. An added bonus was them serving free spring rolls as appetizer! So nice. A very solid sushi location for what it stands for! I don't live too close but this may be my next go-to take out place.

    First time trying this place, ordered Roll Combo C (California , Spicy Tuna and Dynamite roll) I swear the chefs working there are slacking or something. California roll - came with the tiniest little piece of avocado inside each sushi, literally the size of a rice grain. Also, it didn't come with any cucumber!! Spicy tuna roll - tasted really mushy and it was warm, overall not fresh, stomach was feeling weird after. Dynamite roll - was ok, the only roll I finished and threw out the rest. honestly the worst sushi I've ever tasted and I've tried a lot of sushi restaurants around Vancouver.

    Came here with a group of friends. I ordered the sashimi bento and unagi roll. The sashimi was fresh. The accompanying tempura's batter tasted clean and not overly greasy. The unagi roll, in my opinion, had too much sauce, which overpowered the taste of the unagi itself. Aside from the food, the owners were friendly. They gave our table two plates of gyoza on the house. When they heard it was one of our friend's birthday, they also gave him a sundae!

    Hands down some amazing sushi I've ever had! We called ahead of time and made a reservation because we thought it would be busy on a Friday night, but when we got there it was completely empty. It was the cutest hole in the wall restaurant that I've ever been to. The service was great and the sushi was amazing! If you're ever in that area you should definitely try their sushi!

    Great food. Great service! Definitely coming back the next time I'm in Vancouver. This place is small and quaint and you honestly cannot go wrong with any of their sushi roll options. All six rolls of sushi that my cousins and I ordered were delicious. We ordered the Hawaiian roll (topped with fresh mango and mango sauce YUM!), dragon roll, dynamite roll, she's on fire roll, crazy girl roll, and honestly I forgot the last roll but I do remember it having jalapeño and cream cheese. The sweet lady who served us also provided us with miso soup before our meal and frozen grapes after our meal! Despite the fact that we ordered six rolls, which by the way is more than enough to satisfy three people, our bill was a little over $40. We were in disbelief. This place certainly gave us bang for our buck. Highly recommend!

    Solid choices for sushi. Affordable prices and friendly staff. Great specials and their pickled ginger is extra delicious. Biker friendly location: bike rack right outside and off of a bike path on Burrard. Combo sushi comes with free Miso Soup.

    I ordered a delivery dinner through Foodora from Sushi Coen and had a bad experience. - restaurant took over an hour to prepare the food - I ordered 7 salmon sashimi pieces and only received 4 - the salmon sashimi was literally partially FROZEN - rolls were poorly made and falling apart - rolls had very little fish Overall, this was not a restaurant quality meal but more like a grocery store.

    It was the midst of the lunch rush today, a Friday, and I wanted to go somewhere that wouldn't be too packed. Strolled down Burrard Street and noticed this place was open! It formerly was a sushi restaurant, a Korean restaurant, and a ramen shop. It is now Japanese again. Walk in, (it's always been a very small space inside) and the first thing I notice is how new and clean everything looks and smells. There is still the new wood smell. Was told by the server it's a soft opening right now. Anyway I ordered the "O Combo" which gets you 8 pieces of California roll, assorted tempura, and your choice of quinoa green salad, chicken teriyaki, nigiri sushi, or sashimi for $8. It was a no brainer I chose sashimi. Also had the takoyaki and tuna tataki (yes together in one dish) and the croquette. The food and taste of the O Combo is about what you would expect from you regular Japanese restaurant. The pieces are neither too small that you would still be hungry or too big where it is awkward to fit in your mouth. But definitely decent value for the price considering it is in downtown. I hope the soft opening doesn't mean the price will go up after they have a grand opening. The takoyaki and tuna tataki I just had to order because it is two items I love in one dish. Felt the tuna could have been bigger but the entire dish was still delicious. However, the winner here is definitely the croquette. I felt like I was eating a samosa but in croquette form. Probably one of the best croquettes I've had in a long time. Service is excellent and is genuinely nice and attentive. Only downside is that the food did take a little long considering we were the only table dining. Maybe they will have things ironed out after a couple of weeks. Anyways, I will definitely be back!

But in other parts of the world the meal is what's important and so is a quick turn around. Guu with Garlic reminded me a lot of the Izakaya restaurants I found under the train lines of Tokyo in many ways, including the amount of time it felt right to stay. The food came out quick, the servers took orders quicker, and the alcohol came out chilled and as nice contrast to the hot food. Looking around and you see the hand written menu on blackboard surfaces on the walls and this feeling of authenticity. The heat of the flames from the kitchen can be felt and seen if you sit at the bar. And the flavors just hit all the right notes. Starting with appetizers, a section izakayas shine at, the first dish we got was their scallop and mayo pizza. With a crispy crunch on the bottom and crust, this reminds you of the flavors of a baked volcano roll or scallop roll you can find in almost any North American sushi restaurant. Just like that dish, it's important to eat it while it's still hot so it doesn't get gross and 느끼 에. Then came the yellowtail tuna "tempura" pieces. Thick pieces of yellowtail tuna flash fried for just the right crisp on the outside with slight pink of the fish inside. It is meaty without being oily or fatty. Great bite. The beef tongue after was interesting. From the color of the sauce it accompanies it you would think it would be heavy in flavor but it is actually light and citrusy. A good cut into the richer tones of the beef tongue. The yaki udon was one of the best I ever had. It was smokey without being overpowering. The beef was thin and tender and balanced well with the mushrooms it also came with. The udon noodles stayed bouncy and chewy which I didn't expect from being grilled. Very tasty and highly recommend this dish. For our final bite we shared a hot stone bowl of their pork and cabbage rice. With the hot stone bowl constantly cooking even after this dish arrived it was imperative to stir the ingredients together constantly for the first two minutes. It allowed for the runny egg to meld with the rice and the crispy texture of some ingredients was a nice bonus. All in all, I loved eating here and if my appetite was bigger I would've tried more on their menu. A solid place to eat with a great atmosphere, if you're looking for delicious food that won't take too much of your time but still lingers in your memories you have to check out Guu with Garlic.

But since they serve it in a broth, it does get soggy really quick. Still good, but after a few minutes its just soggy. The broth is nice with rice; comforting kind of meal. The unlimited rice/soup/cabbage is just icing on the cake. My dining partner had the Kake udon (pretty good, noodles good texture and slightly smaller strands than most places) and Menchi Cheese side - basically a pork meatball with cheese and deep fried katsu-style, served with katsu sauce. This was excellent. My original review still stands. Excellent katsu, plus they have the consistency and reliability. $28-30/meal and its plenty of food for 1, especially with unlimited cabbage/rice/soup. Restaurant is nice and comfortable, good spacing and not cramped. Easy recommend. 5/5.

Okeya Kyujiro is a Michelin one-star theatrical omakase restaurant, and when they say theatrical, they mean it! From the moment you're welcomed by smiling ushers in kimono to the closing tea ceremony, every movement feels intentional, precise, and elevated. The ambiance is serene and anticipatory. At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. The finale is a matcha ceremony, whisked in front of you with the same quiet precision that defines the evening. When the final sip is taken, the bell chimes once more, the chefs and staff bow, and the screens close. It was a beautifully choreographed dining experience, perfect for marking a special moment, and one I'd gladly return to for the next celebration.

I prefer a more intimidate and interactive style of omakase where you can talk with the chefs. This lunch also felt a little fast in terms of progression of the meal. Some of the dishes were very tasty while others didn't wow us. With drinks, we were quite full despite some reviews saying portion is on the smaller size. Our total was around $500 with drinks for 2 people. A really good experience for omakase, especially if you are looking for a unique experience though not my favourite one I've tried.

I noted how small this place was, and crowded, with the tables close together and a long bar with a counter and barstools there (also close together). Our reserved table was right by the front door - literally, - so every time the door opened, we got a gust of cold air (and it was a cold February night when we were there). I kept my coat on. Truth be known, I was not very comfortable. Also, it was loud. Very loud. I like how the staff shout Japanese greetings to diners whenever they enter but between the frequent shouts and the sheer volume of chatter from all the diners, all sitting close together in close proximity, it was kinda hard to hear what my friends were saying during our dinner. That said, the environment was super vibrant and, again, my friends said this was very typical of an Izakaya in Japan. Food-wise, I have no idea what my friends ordered. The menu was primarily available by way of a QR code and I had no idea what the dishes were, so I deferred to my friends' knowledge. But I can attest that all the dishes were DELICIOUS. We had some sort of Japanese street food "pancakes" (they were wonderful). We had some sort of stirfry beef with noodles (amazing). We had two types of sashimi (omg both were so fresh and so so good!). We had a few other dishes that I can't recall, but I remember I loved them. So.... the food here was GREAT. Service was also attentive which I hadn't expected, being as busy as the restaurant was. I really liked this place but I'll probably go back in the summertime when the weather is nicer as I was cold there, and I'd dine at an off-time, when the volume wasn't so loud. We picked up the 16-piece Premium Cut Rolls (toro, yellowtail, scallop, and truffle lobster), and the quality really showed in the taste. Everything was clean, fresh, and well-balanced -- no heavy sauces, no distractions, just really good fish. The toro was rich and smooth, the scallop was buttery, and the truffle lobster added a nice depth without overpowering the roll. Pickup was quick and seamless, and the food was packaged well for eating on the go before a flight. Portions are standard, but the flavor and quality are absolutely the highlight here. If you care more about how sushi tastes than flashy extras, Hello Nori is a great choice. Would happily come back next time.
