Don't let looks or location deceive you. I was next door getting a pedicure when the friends I was with decided they wanted lunch at the Sushi Cafe. I'm not from around here, so I had no opinion, other than the appearance. I was not optimistic. Service started the experience off right. Most everyone ordered something other than sushi (tempura mostly). I started with a seaweed salad. It was lacking in flavor (needed more marinade). I was thinking that my first impressions would be borne out. Regardless, I ordered most of my usuals to get a sample of what they do. I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality of all the fish. The preparation was very well done too. They provided ample ginger and wasabi, and offered low sodium soy. The Yellowtail was exceptional. The scallops were very good, and the tuna was good. The ikura and tobiko were also very fresh and delicious. They have quail egg on the menu, but, sadly, were out of them. Seating inside is a little sparse (it's a small place), but they have a nice outdoor seating area...no great scenery, but hey you're outside. The chairs and tables are cheap and mostly uncomfortable. They have a rather large selection of wine, and they get a little extra credit for having Asahi on the menu. I think that's the best beer with sushi. Unfortunately they were out of both Asahi and Kirin Ichiban, my second go-to beer. The others are the table enjoyed their cooked food. Overall, I fully recommend this place. The food quality and the preparation have not been Sushi Cafe the quality. I don't know if they have new people that are preparing the food the presentation is way off! My second to the last order was sashimi instead of sushi like I order. It did not contain the jalapenos that I requested to be on the roll But I chalked it up to them, just having a bad day. Recently, I just ordered basically the same order. They did get the order correct regarding sushi again I requested jalapenos on my rolls which were smoke salmon and spicy scallop rows(raw) this time they did have the jalapenos, but they were just set in the container. So that's a problem. I truly don't want to go anywhere else, but $30- $40 dollars on sushi, and it's not done right.I can't continue to do. Soooo does anyone know if they changed mgmt? read more

What a great sushi spot! I had my fingers crossed that this place would be good since it's so close to me. I placed a pick up order over the phone and it was ready in less than 15 minutes. I got the avocado roll, sweet potato roll, side of fried rice, and side of noodles. Everything was great! For the veggie rolls: the avocado in the avocado roll was perfectly ripe (sometimes places use underripe avocado which is yuck). The sweet potato roll had a good proportion of sweet potato to tempura. I might add eel sauce to it next time. The fried rice was just rice and egg, so if you're egg-free be sure to ask for no egg! The noodles were exactly what you'd expect and very flavorful. The portions were super generous for the price as well. I didn't dine in this time, but it looks like they have a great outdoor seating area for when the weather is nice. I used to order from here a lot during covid, but I've started coming here with my girlfriend quite a few times over the past couple months and every time it's an enjoyable experience. The sushi rolls are decently sized and the quality of the fish for the sushi and sashimi is very good. Everything is fairly priced as well, I never feel like I paid a lot for a little. The service is always polite and attentive. The inside of the restaurant is always nice and relaxing with the lights not being too bright and the music is at a tasteful volume. I've had an unpleasant experience with the last sushi restaurant I visited recently. Ready to throw in the towel, my girl told me that she knew a great spot, and I decided to give things one last shot. As for the sushi, we tried the rainbow roll first, and the fish quality was indeed fresh! The dancing eel roll possessed interesting contrast of flavor but mainly reminded us of bbq chicken (eel). Lastly, the kiwi roll was a real shocker as the slightly tart flavor went amazing with sweet chili sauce and crispy shrimp! Moreover, our server was very friendly and highly attentive. I can't believe I only have one picture. I will say it's not because I didn't like my food it's because I've been here so many times that I didn't realize I hadn't posted pictures of my favorite roll. The Monster Roll. You won't find this roll on the menu but if you ask for it the chef will have no problem preparing it. I'm also a fan of the pork dumplings. There nothing over the top, just simple well prepared dumplings, just like I like. I must say the last few visits I've made here I've been given what seems to be a stretched, watery version of shrimp sauce but it didn't take away from the flavor of the monster roll so I'm not going to ding them for that. If you decide to check the place out just know it's in one of the most busy parking lots in Riverside so prepare to maneuver and fight for a space. The restaurant itself isn't that big but it's a pretty quiet relaxed atmosphere. I like to sit in the outside patio and watch the people go by. Someone posted you will only like this if you don't know what good sushi is. I lived in Japan for three years and the spousal unit is Japanese so we know sushi. Only issue I had was the air conditioning was set very high easily over 80 degrees in the dining area (I find most places are too cold for me so this is saying something). So I would have given service zero stars if google would let me - let me explain. The food is great! The location is great. The atmosphere is casual and cozy, acceptable for being casual fare. However after watching one couple walk out after being ignored for 12 minutes after sitting and not even having water right to them, our food came out. The server was definitely not stellar to start with but as someone who waited tables through college and then was in F&B and event management for over 10 years, I try to always be patient. What I did note however were numerous hicky marks all over her neck which looked very unhygienic! Okay moving on - our main courses came out and she literally lost her grip and dropped my entire hibachi meal (rice, veggies, shrimp and sauce - lots of sauce) in my lap. She felt awful. I was of course pissed but unharmed. I was however angered bc my ivory linen pants were no doubt doomed to be ruined given the oils that are used n hibachi cooking. $120 pants, tags cut off just last week - ruined. I was not angered at the sever - she did not mean to do this and she felt awful! I felt sad for her, albeit mad about my new favorite summer pants. By the end of the meal we had moved tables, a new sever stepped in and the owner came by to say sorry. Okay. As we were finishing he - the owner - drops the check!!! A 30% discount of $18.15 was given but my meal was $18.50! And who in their right mind as an owner drops any sort of check at all after such a catastrophe? You comp the meal and allow any monies left go to the staff. No. This guy dropped a check for $47 to which we left $47. He undoubtedly kept it all and stiffed his staff. I felt bad but had to leave zero tip to make a point. This owner lost a paying couple who would have returned if he handled it right, and then had a disaster (mistake of course) occur and he still wanted his money? Absolutely disgraceful. Not even an offer to have the pants attempted at dry cleaning. So I paid near $50 to lose a $120 pair of pants and stiff two servers. Karma will come to this local business owner. read more

Though it's advertised as a cafe, with just a little improvement the cafe could be a bit more intimate and appealing. Hang some paintings, or better yet a mural, on the walls. The restaurant is always clean and the staff very courteous. The menu is typical for a sushi bar, but what is nice is that the sushi is always fresh. The prices are average and the chef does a really nice presentation with everything served. If your looking for a nice quaint sushi bar in Riverside area with good food, look no further. Pickup service was fast and efficient and they have a table set up outside for to-go orders. My food was ready within the quoted pickup time. My son treated me to dinner here this evening. Both of us had eaten here when it was located on the other side of the building but had not since it moved. Boy were we wowed when we came in. Yes, the place is a lot smaller but it is very attractive and upscale looking. Definitely an improvement over the old place. I think the food was even better than before. Just the right amount of waiting time between drinks and soup and then soup and rolls, then rolls and dessert. We both had the clear soup (delish) and then split the Jaguar, Monster (off the Chef Special menu), and Rock & Rolls. All were super fresh and scrumptious and we enjoyed every bite. Even the fried cheesecake for dessert was just right. Service was prompt, the waitress was attentive and helpful, but not overbearing. It appeared that the other customers around us were being taken care of promptly by their waitresses as well. The dining area outside looked adorable and I am looking forward to the cooler weather and dining out there. But there were so many sushi options in the area. It came down to 4 people wanting to go here, 1 wanted Sake House, and 2 people that were completely new to the area. Ordered two rolls and decided on the salad with ginger dressing. This is a staple everywhere but there seems to be something extra fresh about that ginger dressing. However, they do have a nice dining area as well as a covered outside seating area to enjoy a nice lunch if you choose to eat-in. They're usually pretty busy with people picking up orders so that's always a good sign. This last visit, I didn't call-in and just ordered a miso soup and a clear broth soup to-go. They serve the typical Jacksonville sushi of low grade fish, mostly fried options, all slathered in mayonnaise and sticky, sweet sauces. Barely a step above gas station sushi. Save your money and time since you'll have to shower and wash all clothing you wear here immediately after in hot water to try and get rid of the intense smells that attach to you after stepping into this place.
