I'm mad at myself. Why did it take me so long to visit Hiro Japanese Restaurant?! I stopped in for lunch last week & already returned today with my mom. Service was fabulous from the moment I walked in to the end of the meal when I chatted with the Hiro himself & snapped his pic. They have great lunch deals including the one I ordered at my first visit - the Taco Sushi Lunch Set \ spicy tuna, spicy salmon, & spicy krab. I'll admit that I removed the jalapeños (lol) but the ingredients were so fresh and delicious. The meal comes with the option of salad or soup. I went with the clear soup & miso is the other option. The broth was so good that I went back to finish it all after I ate my sushi tacos. Today, both my mom & I did the two roll lunch special with clear soup for 10.95. She said the clear soup was the best she's had in years and loved her eel roll. She said she definitely wants me to take her back soon. In addition to sushi, they have curry, hibachi, and ramen dishes to choose from. I'm looking forward to trying it all! read more

If I could give them more stars I would. We stopped at Hiro after a long drive and we just ordered take out. We decided to eat in four pieces of sashimi. We ordered two salmon nigiri and two yellowtail. To go, we ordered the Mexican roll and the dragon roll. The yellowtail nigiri was so flavorful and melted in my mouth, the salmon was also tasty but nothing compared to the yellowtail. 10/10. The rolls were also very good. We devoured them on our way back home. Great place. They have karaoke night on Wednesdays. They also offered us a complementary cheese cake bites that were yummy. read more

Still my favorite sushi bar in Jacksonville!!! Today I had the chawan mushi (Japanese egg pudding) and it was absolutely heavenly!!! The best item on the menu... so full of flavor and has hearty pieces of fish and mushrooms inside. The hamachi kama was delicious as well. It was deep fried when it's usually grilled but still juicy on the inside and the skin was divine! Love this place. The ambiance is super Japanese, feels like I'm in Tokyo! We decided on Hiro since it was my choice for my birthday. And since I love sushi, I chose Hiro after reading beforehand that the chef is from Tokyo! I ordered the Chirashi and was happy with the sushi's freshness. My mom, not being a sushi fan, ordered french fries lol. I've never had udon served in a pot before so that was a nice touch! The noodles were bouncy, the broth was slightly sweet, and the toppings felt very authentic. The salmon ikura don tasted fresh, and was nicely prepared. The restaurant is located in an unassuming strip mall, but don't sleep on this place! It's hard finding an authentic Japanese restaurant that serves more than sushi. We will definitely be back. read more

I called and wanted to place an order for pickup. they took my full order then stated since I couldn't put a card on file then I couldnt place my order. I stated that it was fine and that I would come by to place my order in person and pay. when I arrived they had locked the door 30 min before close and when I called they stated that they are closed. even though they let me know it was okay to come by and order and it was 30 min until close. since they had such low business at that time they decided my order was not worth staying open for. what a disappointment and disrespectful way to run a business. will never bring my business here again. I went to order my food and they said that they can only take it if I can give them a credit card over the phone. I was paying in cash so I said I can just order it when I get there, whenever I got to the store they wanted to say that they were closed at 9:30 when they close at 10:00 I told them over the phone that I would come up and order my food but yet they still lock the doors before they closed. Waitstaff is young and has some areas they could improve on like speed of order taking, bringing water, talking through specials/ happy hour, etc. but they get an A for effort and kindness! Sushi was some of the best I've had in Jax. Chef was very kind, checked on us periodically and wanted to make sure everything was to our liking. My husband had hibachi which he also said was some of the best he's had in Jax! Steak was seasoned and cooked so well, veggies were delicious and rice was yummy too. Upon paying, they gave us each a hot and fresh fried Oreo which was a nice touch. Restaurant is clean and beautiful! Would definitely recommend. Also, they had karaoke? I love this sushi spot! This is probably the most authentic in town as the sushi chef here is actually Japanese. He's very funny too and his service is spot on. It was quiet. I was surprised there wasn't more patrons while visiting. I started with tempura shrimp (6), a large bottle of hot sake, then salmon, eel, tuna sushi, 2 each, finished with a bowl of green tea ice cream. The place is quiet, with Japanese background music. Very clean, and the very polite waitress is the epitome of Japanese politeness. I spent 6 months in Japan ~25 years ago, and this place is as close to that as I've found. read more

We've been to Hiro Japanese Restaurant a few times and really should visit more often. I love their tonkatsudon and egg pudding. We've tried a few dishes/sushi/sashimi, but those two really stand out to me. I've always loved tonkatsudon (fried pork cutlet with egg omelets, onion, sauce over rice). I have to say, theirs is one of the most flavorful / balanced I've ever tried. The egg pudding was delicate and flavorful, just the way I like it. It is a fairly small restaurant tucked away in a shopping center. But the service was friendly. The owner/chef came to talk to us, asking how we enjoyed the meal, which is always appreciated. One table with two people. One table with one person and the third table were three as people our table the fourth table had seven people. There was one worker in the restaurant, and ordering was confusing the waiter at first didnt yet what we wanted but soon as properly fulfilled the request. The waiter was kind, and patient. The waiter gave us complementary onion rings, I did c not try one, but from my accompaniments I heard they were good. Miso soup and salad was served at 6:22pm.My meal was served at 6:26pm. The food was good, the chicken tastes amazing and that's a lot coming from a huge picky eater. The rice was fluffy and moist. The handrolls came out at 6:35pm Avocado salad, and sashimi came out at 6:40, a side of teriyaki chicken with rice was ordered at 6:40 the lobster roll came out at 6:48pm. The tuna avocado rolls, quantity two. Came out along with salmon avocado roll at 6:50pm. Instead of a tuna hand roll at 6:52pm we a got tuna roll, the waiter confused went back to the kitchen to fix it. The corrected item came out at 6:57pm. The side of teriyaki chicken and rice. When we were finished with O'Neill, the wiggles came and gave us seven complementary mini cheesecakes. Food was amazing Service was good. Would recommend for a family outing. read more

A friend and I had dinner here and shared the Love Boat for Two. It included 12 pieces of assorted sushi, 13 pieces assorted sashimi and one roll of chef's choice. The variety was pretty good, although I wish the chef chose a fish instead of the egg sushi and the California roll. The sashimi and sushi were pretty fresh. I really enjoyed the Unagi. We also shared cold sake, which was refreshing and tasty. The restaurant is fairly small so there's only one host that's also the server. It was also nice and quiet. read more

There was a japanese pancake with cabbage, shrimp, and something else, that was probably the tastiest out of everything that I ordered. I also tried their yakisoda, which is stir fry noodle with cabbage, and that was also good. Goes well with their white sauce, which I guess is spicy mayo? This place was great when it first opened, but it has gone downhill fast. The quality has dropped, and it feels like they keep getting cheaper. The clear soup used to come with a herb serving of crispy onions on the side and now it is just comes mushy onions in the soup. That's been sitting there for who knows how long. The sushi feels rushed, and the shrimp tempura is not what it used to be. I have given this place three chances and left disappointed every time. Chef and staff were so friendly and the chef provided us an amazing traditional Japanese omakase experience. Shoutout to our local community heroes here at Hiro. The venue is very calm and welcoming. The server was polite, patient, respectful, and attentive. The menu is quite nice with yummy appetizers, sushi, sashimi, rice dishes, ramen, salad, and even desserts. Drinks are also varied from hot tea, iced tea, soda, saki, beer, etc. The chef is so professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. I could that he has pride in his trade because everything was like an art masterpiece. The flavors, textures, and delicate details were all top rate! This is definitely what I am looking for in a sushi venue. I even got to order extra yummy spicy mayo and ginger. We liked everything! The chef was so kind to come by our table and personally asked us if we liked our food and if it was our 1st or 2nd visit. He was sincere and genuine. We were very happy to see the other happy patrons and we even met a returning customer at the door as we waited for the venue to open. This place is so cute and cozy. The food is so fresh and on point with flavor. We had great service and we 100% will be back. We went a little ham on our orders but there were too many options. I opted for the lunch teppanyaki salmon with veggies, sweet potato fries and clear soup. I also ordered the lunch sushi special with the salmon skin roll and eel cucumber roll.
