This is the "Fast & Furious" of Jacksonville sushi. It's really good, but not at the top, and that's because it's the perfect blend of reasonable price and surprisingly good quality and all you care to eat. I've been coming here for a solid 5 years now, and always kept it a secret. But now that more are discovering it (it's never empty, and there's usually always someone standing in the tiny lobby waiting for a table) it's time for me to spill the Edamame beans. Ambiance is average - and that's not saying it's bad. It's Japanese minimalist in all its glory without being sparse or vacuous. Service is always outstanding and exceeds expectations. Attentive servers come often to ensure your drinks are refilled and your tickets are picked up and delivered to the kitchen or sushi chefs. Empty plates are taken away as if it's automatically programmed into every person who walks past your table. This is always a nice approach when a restaurant pulls it off! Food is WAY ABOVE expectations for Jacksonville sushi, and surprisingly so for an all-you-care-to-eat place. We all know that Jacksonville has it's share of mediocre sushi plces. From the menu, my favorites are the huge hand rolls, the Edamame, gyozo, and specialty rolls. Also, the spicy krab soup and any of the krab salads. The only thing I consistently shy away from are any rolls with cream cheese inside. In my mind, cream cheese screams "I don't know what real Japanese is" and has no place in a sushi roll. But that's just me. Another recommendation for you -- order anything that has eel sauce in or on it unless it's served with cream cheese. Oh, you're a beef eater? Well, there's a good selection of all-you-can-eat beef to choose from along with a number of non-sushi items on the menu. Try the hibachi steak! But still, it's mostly Japanese, so don't expect typical restaurant fare. But if you're not into sushi, there still is a lot to offer here like steak, chicken, shrimp, and probably at least one soup or salad you will enjoy. Ask your server - they're always super helpful. We were absolutely confused when we sat down, had no clue how to order after sitting for a few minutes. So good! We went for the lunch AYCE and are still stuffed 8 hours later! Our orders came out super fast and the food was fresh and delicious. The kitchen orders (steak hibachi, chicken noodles and ginger salad) were a nice surprise - I didn't realize anything other than sushi would be an option. Beware that the portions are LARGE and they have a good waste fee, so only order a few things at a time. Servers were very polite and quick to grab our order tickets. They have a decent All You Can Eat lunch menu. It wasn't too busy but we went right when they opened at 11. When you are seated they tale your drink order and you have the menu on the table along with papers to write down your orders. The waiters walk around and collect the orders quickly. The food comes out quickly as well. Our son lpves their clear soup, noodles, and habachi steak. I really enjoyed all of the cooked rolls (being pregnant it gets my "sushi fix" out). My husband went hard on all the raw sushi and was impressed at the freshness and quality for an AYCE. Some of the other places we have been to that is AYCE seem to be rushed, and have small tables, but Rainbow was spacious with booth and table options. They have some pretty great quality food for being all-you-can-eat sushi. Also, you just have to pay slightly more, and you can include the premium stuff like eel and spider-rolls. It's definitely good value, especially with inflation the way it is. And yes, my black dragon roll and spider roll were both good lol. The hand rolls were maybe a little stingy on the amount of fish, but I get it. Anyways, what impressed me the most was actually the non-sushi stuff. The steamed gyoza was soft without being sticky. The meat and skin were both very consistent with a generic but nice flavor. I don't think they made this, but it can still be good. The agedashi tofu looked underwhelming, but was scalding hot and the texture was on-point. Finally, I ordered some veggie tempura on a whim, and it was such a nice surprise. A lot of American-Japanese joints make some truly awful tempura. It's not supposed to be a dry and bland piece of sadness. It's also not just a mediocre after-thought either. There are Japanese chains that specialize in tempura just like American fried seafood chains (except the Japanese ones are better), and they'll fry every seafood under the sky. /rant This tempura was actually juicy, and the batter was nicely light and flaky and fluffy. Rainbow is a fairly new AYCE sushi spot that was rebranded from what was previously Sake House. While we didn't have any major complaints, I would say that the rating is a little closer to 3.5 stars, but would rather round up than down in hopes that they'll improve a little with some more time under their belt. The menu options are very typical for an AYCE sushi/hibachi, and quality of food is on par with their competitors. I did find their hibachi options to be a little bland, but did like that the sashimi was cut nice and thin, as I have been to other places that give you more of a chunk rather than a slice. Price wise, I believe they might be just a tad cheaper, but their prices do vary depending on when you visit, with weekends being the most expensive. My biggest complaint, and the reason why I think 3.5 stars is a little more appropriate, was the service. Without it even been busy, It was just soooo slow, and took forever for food to come out. Even simple things like a ginger salad or cucumbers too quite a long time to finally arrive. Perhaps it's intentional to prevent you from eating more since your stomach tends to settle when waiting for more food to arrive, or perhaps it's just growing pains, but I do hope that aspect of the experience improves. All in all, it was a decent experience, but I just think that there isn't really anything that sets them apart from any of the other AYCE places around town. read more

Came here for the AYCE lunch. It was average at best. The gyoza were pretty bad and stuffed mostly with vegetables. The Shumai were these tiny deep fried bites which in no resemble the real thing. The shrimp tempura was surprisingly authentic however. When it came to the sushi nigiri, the tuna was watery and flavorless. The one bright spot was the tilapia which they called white fish. It was tender and flavorful. They also serve escolar which I don't see many sushi places do as it can cause stomach distress. The specialty rolls like the shrimp tempura roll were flavorful and a nice addition to the meal though. I'd say it's a good place to try if you like more americanized sushi. read more

If there was an option to give 3.5 stars I would have. Decided to give this place a try after seeing a few folks share their experiences. I will say, it is quite a drive for me. I typically frequent Fuji and Miya for AYCE sushi. Where as my experience wasn't bad at all, it wasn't that much different than Fuji other than it seems like majority of the servers live by the beach and there was no language barrier. The sushi was good. The menu covered a variety of familiar requests of rolls and appetizers. The food took a while to come out ..but hey. We went around lunch time...so we can say that's why ‍. If I'm being candid.. I feel like either the owner of this place is related to the owner of Fuji and they decided to share concepts.... OR... they went to Fuji and snuck a menu and recreated it. lol. One thing they should have copied is... identifying seats. They don't do this.... So, what happens is... (it happened to us yesterday) the server brings all this food, and has no idea who it goes to. So someone is bound to eat someone's food. All in all, the place is good. I'd come back, but I would have to be in the area already. I have never in my life written a negative review but today was too far even for me. We had a male server with glasses and he very wasn't just not nice, he was mean and incredibly dismissive. Halfway through our time I ordered a bowl of clear soup, this never arrived, after I failed to flag down our waiter for 15 minutes he comes over and tells me it's coming. It never came, I ask again and this time he doesn't even let me finish my sentence before he repeats that it is coming, again it never came. I received my last few rolls and we sat there for what felt like an eternity until someone else nearby managed to stop him and we asked for our check literally as he sped by us without stopping. Awful experience, the egg rolls tasted like dish water but outside of that the food was overall fine.
