Yamasaki is a great new addition to the Jax Beach dining scene. We stopped in for lunch just a few weeks after their opening and, to our surprise, found the restaurant completely empty. Service was prompt and friendly, but the quiet atmosphere felt a little flat, even some background music would have gone a long way in creating a more inviting vibe. The food, however, more than made up for it. I ordered the sushi omakase, which was beautifully presented and arranged in the order the chef intended it to be enjoyed. Each piece had a unique topping that elevated the freshness of the fish, and at such an affordable price, it felt like an incredible value. I'm excited to see how Yamasaki develops as more people discover it, and I'll definitely be back soon to try more of the menu. The place is tucked away in a shopping center and the ambience is low key and has an upscale look. I came in for lunch which ends at 3 and only had 4 minutes to order before the computer took away the specials. I got spicy tuna rolls and there was one mishap. As I was eating the first bite I noticed a hair. I told the waiting she quickly remedied the situation. The waitress very friendly and offered her recommendations. If you want to try this place out I suggest going during lunch time where you get 3 rolls for $18. The rolls are good. I am not a sushi connoisseur so I really only know good and bad but hopefully the pictures will tell the story for others who have a better sense of sushi. read more

I got the Ocean Rainbow roll (Crabmeat and avocado in soy nori, topped with blue fin tuna, king salmon, yellowtail, fuke, shrimp and tobiko, spicy kimchi dressing) and the Out of Control roll (Blue fin tuna, king salmon, yellowtail and asparagus inside, served with rice cracker, moliko eel sauce). Yamasaki is new and still experiencing growing pains. They definitely have potential for more stars. But this is based on my current experience. We spent over $200 on two people, and expected to get a bit more for it. We sat at the sushi bar because usually you get a more unique experience that way. But the sushi chefs were very busy and did not even look at anybody sitting there. The place was packed and service was very slow. After waiting a while, my husband went to find us menus. We started with edamame, which was pretty standard. Next we tried the Bird Nest, which was my favorite. It looks as good as it tastes! We love good cold sake and the only options available were either the house, or the $30 bottles. We tried the house sake and it was ok. (They serve it hot or cold) They were out of the midrange price bottles so we went for one of the $30 ones. It was a small bottle but delicious. I was looking forward to trying the omakase. We went for the sushi option. The waitress brought it while my husband was in the bathroom and ran through the fish names very fast. When my husband returned, I couldn't tell him half of what the items were. I was expecting a bit more from the omakase. The fish was very fresh, but there wasn't much to it to differentiate it from a chefs choice sushi platter besides a little blob of stuff on top of each piece. It would have been better if the pieces were explained more so we could appreciate it and I could describe it better than "a row of fish with different blobs on top." But I get that the waitress was slammed and trying to hurry. After that, we put our order in for sushi and sashimi and a roll. We got the sushi first and then the roll maybe 20 minutes later. Usually your sushi dinner order comes all at the same time. Presentation was pretty plain. Nothing special about it. The cuts were small, but the toro and king salmon were delicious. The shrimp was skinny and sad and the eel was also small and a bit lacking in flavor. Nothing we ate was bad. It just didn't have the wow factor you expect for the prices. And you get nothing but what you order. No soup, welcome roll, extra pieces or fun surprises from the sushi chefs at the bar. Maybe we are a bit spoiled by our usual sushi spot where they have lots of extras and big fat cuts of fish. Yamasaki seems like a good date spot, but not the go-to for sushi dinner. After reading all about omakase it was a bit of a let down for everything (except the bird nest) to be kind of plain in presentation and just rushed through. I do want to go back and try again in a couple months after they've had more time to get in their groove. But I don't think I would order the omakase again. They did have several other fun sounding apps I want to try though! read more

I was so excited to try the new addition of Yamasaki to the beaches area. Upon arrival we were sat as requested at the sushi bar. Taking the last 2 seats. The bar was full but most were finishing their meals and left within 15 minutes. The bar was almost empty and the dining area had a few tables. We waited for about 7 minutes before being greeted by a server who asked if we wanted water. Off she went. Arriving with water and taking out drink orders. 2 draft beers fairly easy order for a restaurant that was not busy. We are now the only people at the sushi bar. Time passed before the beers arrived. We ordered 4 rolls and Miso Soup. Almost finishing our beer the soup arrived. We ordered another beer and the wait began. We waited and waited watching 4 sushi chefs preparing their craft. After 1hr and 12 minutes we inquired about our food. Being advised that they were working on it we requested our bill. It was late and we were hungry. Who I suspect was the manager began arguing with me about the time we had been waiting. He was not nice and argumentative. We paid the bill and left to find food. After arriving home I was looking at receipts which confirmed my argument. Time stamped receipts from time 1st beer order entered until time of payment transaction90 minutes total for receiving 4 beers and 1 bowl of Miso Soup. Very disappointing. A friend told me about this sushi restuarant and I became even more excited to visit after I saw they order some of their fish directly from a well known fish market in Japan! I recommend ordering the handrolls, they come stuffed with fish and it's a good bang for your buck.I really enjoyed my salmon handroll but I wish they added something to the salmon like a light sauce or some lemon to really elevate the flavor. The specialty rolls they offer are very large and some are wrapped in a delicate cabbage instead of nori. But don't be worried there is not a cabbage flavor to the rolls. I wanted to order the hotate (Japanese scallop) but they only order them from Japan on Monday I believe, so I missed out on that. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the music. It really didn't fit the "vibe" in my opinion and weirdly it didn't make me want to hang out there for too long. Seems like music for much older crowd. I have been reading about this place since it opened and finally had an opportunity to visit. We were greeted and sat immediately. They have lunch specials till 3pm. There is a variety of wine, beer and cocktails, and o course variations of sake. The beer was cold and crisp. We ordered Gyosa and spring rolls for an appetizer. Wow, we knew we were in the right place. Started off with freshness and fabulous. Salina took such good care of our needs. She was an amazing server. We ordered for our entrees teriyaki steak and mine was the lunch special that was sushi and sashimi. My husband said the steak was cooked to perfection and tasted well seasoned. My sushi was so fresh and just obviously well picked out for perfection. I got a crispy salad with a wonderful ginger dressing. The ambiance was superb perfectly done with the lighting as well as the music. As our meal was coming to an end we met the owner who came and greeted us. He was truly interested in finding out the good and bad of our experience. This visit is one I will make again. I highly recommend for anyone to give it a shot. Beautiful decor and warm ambiance. Brussels was our server. He was very attentive and provided suggestions. Yamasaki offers fresh seafood selections - they were out of uni, but nice to know they actually had it. Husband had king salmon, yellowtail and o-toro. Started with the Choo Choo lobster which was beautiful and tasty. Shared the Surf & Turf - steak was perfectly cooked, lobstered tasted grilled and the sauce that's served with was delicious. This is a great restaurant. Maybe the best food in Jacksonville! It's a classy place. Nice staff. And it's still affordable. I go for lunch and have one of the box lunches. No, it doesn't come in a box! First you have miso soup and salad with ginger dressing. Then the food comes on a tray. There are multiple choices in four categories. You get all four. I like the ribs (meat falling off the bone), pork dumplings, steak with Oriental vegies like bok choy, mushroom caps, carrots, and broccoli, and rice. Too much food for me, so I take half of it home. The box lunches are on the back page of the extensive menu, way down in the bottom right corner. Box lunches are for lunch only during the week. Not available on weekends! This restaurant is on Atlantic Blvd in Neptune Beach, immediately east of the little Publix which is next to the big Publix in the old K-Mart shopping center. There is also a sizeable private room for parties or meetings or whatever. Enjoy! read more

Heard great reviews between food, and ambiance. Had dinner there last night: angry dragon; and fire dragon. The rice on the roll was like paste. Couldn't decipher any grain of rice as the whole thing was paste. The service and the front desk was absolutely accommodating and engaging. Very good service. It would have been better if the food was good. Either it was an off night; or they are still getting their rhythm going; or perhaps that's just the way they serve it and customers like it. We visited last night for my daughter's birthday. I was lucky enough to speak to Bennie, the owner, when I made reservations so they were prepared. As always, the service was superb. We are not quite regulars, but we go frequently enough to have our apps ready to order and go right to the saki order. Our server made a few recommendations on saki and she was spot on. Bennie also was kind enough to have the chef prepare a little gift for my daughter. We also took the advice of our server on three rolls, all of which were fabulous.
